NATIONAL UPDATES
1. Meghalaya launches India’s first social audit law: Meghalaya state has become the first Indian state to operationalize ‘The Meghalaya Community Participation and Public Services Social Audit Act, 2017’, a law that makes a social audit of government programmes and schemes a part of government practice. It was launched by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma at a national convention in Shillong.

2. PM Modi dedicates Tuirial Hydropower project to the nation: PM Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 60-megawatt Tuirial hydroelectric power project from Aizawl, Mizoram.Now, the Mizoram had become the third power- surplus state in the north-east after Sikkim and Tripura. Prime Minister also inaugurated the Shillong - Nongstoin Rongjeng Tura road. The hydropower project would produce ‘251 million units’ of electrical energy every year.

3. Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurates eastern India’s First CNG Station for scooters: The Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan has inaugurated eastern India’s first compressed natural gas (CNG) stations for scooters in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He also inaugurated CNG-run scooters and CNG stations for three-wheelers at Chandrasekharpur and Patia area in Bhubaneswar. The CNG stations were part of GAIL’s Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga and City Gas Distribution (CGD) projects in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES
1. International Migrants Day 2017 observed globally: The UN’s (United Nation) International Migration Day(IMD) is being observed every year on 18th December to protect the rights of migration workers and members of their families. The theme of this year is Safe Migration in a World on the Move.

2. WHO Certifies Gabon as Polio-Free: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Gabon (central African country) "polio-free country", given the lack of new reported or suspected casesThe UN health agency nonetheless recommended taking the necessary steps to continue monitoring for possible signs of the disease. Since 1988, Cases of polio have decreased by 99%, when polio was endemic in 125 countries and 350,000 cases were recorded worldwide.

3. Sebastian Pinera wins Chile's presidential election: Former president Sebastian Pinera has won Chile's presidential election. With 98.44% of the ballots counted, Pinera had won 54.57% in the run-off vote, to 45.43% for senator Guillier. He has replaced Michelle Bachelet. Sebastian Pinera was President of Chile between 2010 and 2014 too.

1. World Inequality Report 2018:  India’s top 1% earners received 22% of national income in 2014. Since the beginning of deregulation policies in the 1980s, the top 0.1 per cent earners have captured more growth than all of those in the bottom 50 per cent combined.

SPORTS:
1. India wins 10 medals in Wushu Sanda Asian Cup: India has won 10 medals (5-Silver and 5 Bronze) in the first Wushu Sanda Asian Cup in Guangzhou, China. The Silver medal winners were: Praveen in 48kg, Mukesh Chaoudhary (70kg), Rajender Singh (90kg), Arunpama Devi (60kg) and Vishakhaptnam Malik (70kg).The bronze medals were won by Uchit Sharma (52kg), L Budhdhachandra Singh(56kg), Rajani Deori (75kg), Y Sanathoi Devi (52kg), and Pooja Kadian(65kg).

2. India beat Sri Lanka by 8 wickets; win series 2-1: The hosts India have clinched the One-Day International (ODI) series 2-1 against Sri Lanka and recorded their eighth successive win in a bilateral contest.Earlier, India defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third and final cricket ODI at Visakhapatnam.The victory target of 216 runs was overhauled by making 219 for 2 in 32.1 overs.Player of the Series: Shikhar Dhawan.

3. Sushil Kumar & Sakshi Malik win gold at Commonwealth Wrestling Championships: India’s Sushil Kumar clinched the gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, in South Africa. He defeated Akash Khullar (New Zealand) in the final of the 74kg freestyle category. India’s Parveen Rana won a bronze medal in the same category. Sakshi Malik won the gold medal in the women's freestyle category. She defeated Tayla Tuahine Ford (New Zealand) by a score of 13-2 in the final.

4. PV Sindhu settles for silver at Dubai World Badminton Superseries Finals: Indian shuttler P V Sindhu lost to Yamaguchi in the final in Dubai World Badminton Superseries. She went down fighting against Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in three games, 21-15 12-21 19-21.

5. Former Brazil midfielder Kaka announces retirement from football: The former Milan and Real Madrid midfielder, Kaka, announced his retirement from football. Kaka won 92 caps for Brazil, scoring 29 goals and featuring at three World Cups, forming part of the squad that lifted the trophy in 2002.

NATIONAL UPDATES
1. Bill to replace Medical Council of India: Union cabinet has approved a bill to replace the Medical Council of India with a new commission to ensure transparency and reform. The draft bill also proposes a common entrance exam and licentiate exam which all medical graduates will have to clear to get practicing licences. Bill proposes a govt-nominated chairman & members, who will be selected by a committee under the Cabinet Secretary.

2. Nod for mandatory e-Way Bill: GST council has decided to go for early implementation of e-Way Bill for inter-state movement of items from Feb 1 and uniform mandatory compliance from June 1 next year. The bill will bring uniformity across the states for seamless inter-state movement of goods. An e-Way Bill is required for movement of goods worth more than Rs 50,000.

3. UIDAI suspends Airtel eKYC licence: UIDAI has temporarily barred Airtel & Airtel Payment Bank from conducting Aadhaar-based SIM verification of mobile customers using eKYC process. The action follows allegations of Airtel using Aadhaar-eKYC to open payments bank accounts of its subscribers without their informed consent. UIDAI also objected to allegations about such accounts being linked to receive LPG subsidies.

4. Pension for APs transgenders: The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has approved a scheme to provide a pension of Rs 1500 to transgenders above 18 years of age in the state. Under this scheme the transgenders will be provided ration cards, plots and scholarships, also skill development for financial stability. After Kerala and Odisha, Andhra Pradesh becomes the next state to sanction pension scheme for the transgender community.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES
1. Women to drive trucks, bikes in Saudi: After allowing women to drive, Saudi Arabia has now permitted females to drive trucks and ride bikes. Women involved in road accidents or who commit traffic violations will be dealt with at special centres that will be established and run by women. Saudi Arabia was the only country in the world where women were barred from receiving a driver’s license.

1. Vodafone India appoints Dawar as its CFO: Vodafone India has appointed Manish Dawar as its Chief Financial Officer with effect from January 1, 2018. Dawar will replace Thomas Reiten, who after completing a 4 year stint with Vodafone India, will be moving to a new senior role within the Vodafone Group. He will report to Sunil Sood, MD and CEO, Vodafone India.

SPORTS:

1. International Wheelchair Cricket Tournament in Nepal: The first ever International Wheelchair Cricket Tournament has commenced in Nepal’s Kathmandu. The tournament has participation of teams from Nepal, India & Bangladesh which is supported by Sushil Koirala Memorial Foundation & technical assistance from Kathmandu Cricket Training Center. The first ever series of Wheel Chair competition will conclude with the final match between Nepal & Bangladesh.

1. Nation celebrates Vijay Diwas today: Vijay Diwas is commemorated every 16th December in India, as it marks its military victory over Pakistan in 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. On December 16, 1971, Lieutenant General AAK Niazi (chief of Pakistani forces), along with 93 thousand troops, surrendered to the allied forces, comprising the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini. Bangladesh is also celebrating its Victory Day.

2. Railway extends use of CCTV cameras for monitoring cleanliness: The Railways has extended the use of CCTV cameras for monitoring cleanliness activities at major railway stations. The national transporter has also intensified the enforcement of the Railways (Penalties for activities affecting cleanliness at railway premises) Rules, 2012.

3. R Hemalatha takes Charge as Director of National Institute of Nutrition: R Hemalatha has been appointed as the new Director of the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad. Hemalatha has served as secretary of the Nutrition Society of India, is a fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a fellow of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences.

4. Bengali poet ‘Joy Goswami’ to get Moortidevi Award 2017: Renowned Bengali poet Joy Goswami will be given the Moortidevi Award for the year 2017 for his poetry collection titled ‘Du Dondo Phowara Matro’. ‘Du Dondo Phowara Matro’ is an autobiographical account of the poet’s life featuring his close ones including a pet cat. The Moortidevi award consists of a Saraswati Statue, a Citation Plaque and cash award of Rupees 4 lakhs.

1.  Indo-Maldives joint military exercise Ekuverin in Karna: The two-week long Indo-Maldives joint military exercise, ‘Ekuverin’ has begun at Belagavi, Bengaluru. The bilateral annual exercise is a joint military training between the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).The annual exercise held alternatively in India and Maldives since 2009.'Ekuverin' means 'friends' in the Maldivian language.

1. SBI starts state bank Rewardz Scheme: The State Bank of India (SBI) has introduced a loyalty program “State Bank Rewardz” for its valued customers. The program gives the SBI customers several opportunities to earn reward points and earn many times faster at Max Get More partner outlets.

2. J&K bank launches ‘Sahafat Finance Scheme’: Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) bank’s chairman & CEO Parvez Ahmadhas launched a special financial scheme "J&K Bank Sahafat Finance Scheme" for journalists of the state. It will enable journalists to buy cameras, laptops, tablets, and books. The minimum loan amount for the purpose has been fixed at Rs 50,000 while as the maximum cap is Rs 3 lakhs.

SPORTS:
1. Roger Federer named BBC overseas sports personality of the year: Swiss tennis player Roger Federer has been voted BBC overseas sports personality of the year for a record fourth time. Federer will be honored during Sunday's BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony in Liverpool. Federer became the first man to win Wimbledon eight times and extended his record to 19 Grand Slam titles in 2017.

2. FIFA bans the head of Brazilian football federation: FIFA ethics committee has suspended the head of the Brazilian football federation Marco Polo Del Nero for 90 days over a breach of its rules. Del Nero was accused of accepting a 6.5 million Euro commission. The decision bans Del Nero from any football-related activities during this period.

1. Jitesh Singh Deo named Mr. India 2017: Jitesh Singh Deo bagged the title of ‘Peter England Mr. India 2017’ at a ceremony held at Bandra Fort in Mumbai. Indian footballer Prathamesh Maulingkar has won the title of Peter England Mr. India Supranational 2017, followed by Abhi Khajuria and Pavan Rao. Jitesh competed with 15 other contestants to grab the coveted title.

2. 3rd World Telugu Conference begins today in Hyderabad: the Vice- President ‘M Venkaiah Naidu’ has inaugurated the third World Telugu Conference in Hyderabad.The 5-day conference will promote Telugu and its literature besides helping the present generation learn more about the Telugu language. Around eight thousand Telugu speaking delegates from 40 countries all over the globe will be taking part. President Ram Nath Kovind will participate in the valedictory function on 19th Dec 2017.

3.  Supreme Court extends deadline for Aadhaar linkage up to 31st March next year: The Supreme Court has extended the deadline till 31st March, 2018 for mandatory linking of Aadhaar with various services and welfare schemes. A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also modified its earlier order with regard to linking of Aadhaar with mobile services.

4.  14th Inclusive Finance India summit begins in New Delhi: The 14th Inclusive Finance India Summit has begun in New Delhi to build consensus on strategies and a unified vision for achieving universal financial inclusion in India. The summit offers a platform for a plethora of information to all the thought leaders and industry veterans to debate the issues and challenges involving the Financial Inclusion in the country.

1. Norway becomes the first nation to shut national broadcasts on FM: Norway has become the world's first country to shut down national broadcasts of its FM network by completing its transition to digital radio. The transition will allow for better sound quality, a greater number of channels and more functions, at a cost eight times lower than FM radio.

BUSINESS/ECONOMY:
1. Govt. raises customs duty on electronic items: The union finance ministry has raised customs duty on some electronic items including television, mobile phone, projector and water heater in order to boost domestic manufacturing. Now, customs duty on television set has been increased to 15% from the existing 10% and the duty on monitors and projectors has been doubled to 20%.For the push button telephone or mobile, the duty has been raised to 15% from 0, while water heater and hairdressing instrument duty has been doubled to 20%.

SPORTS:

1. Sachin Siwach named ABC’s best youth boxer: The World youth champion Sachin Siwach has been named the Asian Boxing Confederation’s “Best Youth Boxer” of the year 2017. Sachin won after an online poll conducted by the continental body in his category and polled 36.2 % votes.

1India's submarine ‘INS Kalvari’ inducted in Indian Navy: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commissioned India's modern conventional submarine ‘INS Kalvari’ into Navy's fleet in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Kalvari is the first of the six Scorpene-class submarines handed over by shipbuilder Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) with assistance and technology transfer from France’s DCNS. Earlier, in July 2000, the Indian Navy had inducted a conventional diesel-electric submarine ‘INS Sindhushastra’ procured from Russia.

2.  President Ram Nath Kovind presents National Energy Conservation Awards: President Ram Nath Kovind has presented the National Energy Conservation Awards at the occasion of National Energy Conservation day in New Delhi.Industries that have demonstrated measurable reductions in their energy use has been awarded during the event.Mr. Kovind also presented the National Painting Competition Prizes.This year, over 1 crore 22 lakh children across India between 4th and 9th standards participated in the National Painting Competition.

3. Indian Railways introduces Online Bill tracking system for Vendors & Contractors: The Union Ministry of Railways has introduced an online bill tracking system “Indian Railways E-Procurement System (IREPS)” for vendors and contractors. The objective IREPS is to enhance transparency in the processing and settlement of bills by increasing use of information technology. The vendor or contractor need to register with online IT platform and all bills will be settled within 30 days of its receipt using this platform.

4. Rajasthan becomes the first state to offer e-mail IDs in Hindi: Rajasthan has become the first Indian state to launch free email addresses in Hindi to its residents. The objective of this initiative is to ensure maximum participation of people towards e-governance. Soon Rajasthan’s state personnel will have an email id in Hindi too. The project is being implemented by state IT department with private IT companies.

1. OBOPAY secures pre-paid instrument (PPI) license from RBI: The global mobile payment solutions company ‘OBOPAY’ has announced that the company has secured a license for Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) from the Reserve Bank of India to operate a semi-closed loop wallet in the country. OBOPAY will solve various payment-related problems for their partner clients, bringing efficiency and transparency to the payments process, improving reporting and reducing turnaround times for funds transfers.

2. Retail inflation rises to 4.88% in November: Retail inflation has risen to 4.88% in November this year due to costlier fuel, vegetables, and eggs.According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the inflation, based on Consumer Price Index (CPI), was at 3.58% in October. It was 3.63%  in November last year. Inflation in eggs shot to 7.95% in November on annual basis, as against 0.69% in the previous month. In the fuel and light segment, it was 7.92%, as against 6.36% in October.

3. India’s GDP growth forecast for 2018: According to ‘World Economic Situation and Prospects 2018’ report, India’s GDP growth is projected to accelerate from 6.7% in 2017 to 7.2% in 2018 and 7.4% in 2019 on the back of strong private consumption, public investment and the ongoing structural reforms. The report was unveiled by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).

1. BCCI lifts ban on Rajasthan Cricket Association: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to lift the ban on the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) in its Special General Meeting (SGM).In May 2014, the RCA was suspended by the Indian cricket board when ex-Indian Premier League (IPL) Commissioner Modi was re-elected its president.

OBITUARIES:

1. Actor and filmmaker Neeraj Vora passes away: Actor and filmmaker ‘Neeraj Vora’ passed away in Mumbai. Mr. Vora acted in films like 'Mann' and 'Badshah', and directed films like 'Khiladi 420' and 'Phir Hera Pheri'. He had also written dialogues for films such as 'Rangila', 'Akele Hum Akele Tum', 'Taal', 'Josh', 'Badmaash', 'Chori Chori Chupke Chupke', 'Awara Paagal Deewana'.

NATIONAL UPDATES
1. Govt to set up special courts to fast-track trial of over 1500 MPs, MLAs: The Law and Justice ministry told the Supreme Court in an affidavit that, at least 12 special courts will be set up to decide cases involving politicians as accused. Twelve such courts will be set up at a cost of 8 crore rupees for a period of one year. Earlier, the apex court had directed the union govt. to place before it the details regarding 1,581 cases involving MPs and MLAs, as declared by the politicians at the time of filing their nominations during the 2014 general elections.

2. Hotels, restaurants can sell bottled water above MRP, rules SC: According to Supreme court, Hotels and restaurants are not bound by maximum retail price (MRP) in selling bottled water. The Apex Court was hearing a petition filed by the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) against Delhi High Court ruling. Earlier, the union govt had submitted that selling bottled mineral water above the MRP will attract monetary penalty and jail term for the management of restaurants, hotels, multiplexes.

3. Rajasthan Govt. to recognize political prisoners as ‘Loktantra Sainani’: The Rajasthan state’s cabinet has decided to change the name of Rajasthan MISA and DIR Bandi Pension Rules 2008 to the Rajasthan Loktantra Sainani Samman Nidhi-2008. Now, the political prisoners held in jails during the emergency period as ‘Loktantra Sainani’. Earlier, only those people who were detained under MISA & DIR and kept in any of the Rajasthan jails were given the monthly pension of Rs. 12,000 and a monthly allowance of Rs. 1200.

4. CBSE to upload scanned images of OMR answer sheets with recorded response of candidates: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has uploaded the scanned images of OMR answer sheets with the recorded response of candidates who had appeared in UGC-NET test (held on 5th November).The OMR sheets with answer keys will be available on CBSE website "cbsenet.nic.in" till 18th of December. The candidate will have to submit a fee of one thousand rupees per recorded response challenged through credit or debit card.

5.  Nakul Chopra elected as BARC India Chairman: Nakul Chopra has been elected as the next Chairman of BARC India.He succeeds Sudhanshu Vats (Viacom18 Group CEO).The Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India is an industry body set up to design, commission, supervise and own an accurate, reliable and timely television audience measurement system for India.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES
1. Google launches artificial intelligence research center in China: Alphabet Inc's Google is opening an artificial intelligence (AI) research center in China to target the country's local talent. The research center is the first of its kind in Asia and will comprise a small team operating out of its existing office in Beijing

2. Bangladesh launches vaccination drive of Rohingya children against Diphtheria: Bangladesh has launched a massive drive to vaccinate Rohingya children against diphtheria after a suspected outbreak killed nine refugees and infected more than 700. More than six lakh Rohingya are based in these camps, having fled violence in Myanmar in recent months. The Bangladesh government & UN agencies are vaccinating around two lakhs fifty thousand children under the age of seven living in camps and temporary settlements near the border with Myanmar.

BUSINESS/ECONOMY:
1.  Industrial output growth hits to 3-months low of 2.2% in Oct: Growth in the country's industrial production hit a three-month lowof 2.2 % in October this year. Factory output, measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production, had increased 4.2% in October last year, and 4.14% in September 2017.According to the data released by the Central Statistics Office, growth in the manufacturing sector, which accounts for almost 78% of the index. Mining output rose 0.2%, and consumer durable goods output contracted 6.9%.Consumer non-durables output increased 7.7%, and capital goods output rose 6.8% in October.

SPORTS:

1. Union Govt. will soon launch Khelo India Programme: According to the Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Rajyavardhan Rathore, the ministry will launch Khelo India programme for period 2017-18 to 2019-20 at cost of Rs 1756 crore.Mr.  Rathore also announced that the year 2018 will be celebrated as the Year of Sports.The Khelo India programme will promote 150 select schools from different districts and 20 universities across the country, as hubs of sporting excellence. It will cover about 200 million children in age group of 10-18 under a massive physical fitness drive.

1. Vice President confers 'Yeraringan' award to M.S. Swaminathan: India’s Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu conferred 'Yeraringan’ award to Prof. M.S. Swaminathan (Father of Indian Green Revolution). M.S. Swaminathan has inspired many scientists to focus on the problem of Indian agriculture and develop progressive solutions for it.

2.  Rahul Gandhi elected Congress president unopposed: The Indian National Congress (INC) announced that Rahul Gandhi has been elected unopposed as new Congress President. Rahul Gandhi succeeds his mother Sonia Gandhi. The CEA (Central Election Authority) received a total of 89 nomination papers proposing Rahul Gandhi’s name for the top post. In January 2013, Mr. Gandhi became the vice-president of the party.

3.Union Minister J P Nadda launches new initiatives on Universal Health Coverage Day: The Union Health Minister JP Nadda has launched new initiatives including Laqshya-A Labour Room Quality Improvement Initiative and safe delivery application at a function in New Delhi. This will be implemented in Government Medical Colleges besides District Hospitals & high delivery load Sub-District Hospitals and Community Health Centres. The objective of this initiative is to reduce preventable maternal and newborn mortality, morbidity & stillbirths associated with the care around delivery in Labour room.

4. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad launches first NIC-CERT: The Union Minister of Law & Justice and Electronics & Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad has launched the “NIC-CERT” in New Delhi, a setup of National Informatics Centre, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.The objective of NIC-CERT to create a comprehensive framework that integrates world-class security components and inbuilt threat intelligence for detection, prevention & incident response.

1. Six diplomats felicitated with Diwali 'Power of One' award at UN: Six top diplomats have been felicitated with the inaugural Diwali "Power of One" award at the UN headquarters in New York for their contribution to help form a more "perfect, peaceful and secure world". The awards have been presented on the occasion of the first anniversary of the US Postal Service's issuing of a forever Diwali stamp last year. The awardees include Lakshmi Puri (Indian head of the UN Women), outgoing British Ambassador to the UN Matthew Rycroft and Nawaf Salam (Lebanese Ambassador to the UN), elected to the International Court of Justice.

2. Mount Hope named as UK's highest peak: Recently, Mount Hope was re-measured and found to tower above the previous title holder, Mt Jackson, by a good 50m (160ft). Mt Hope is now put at 3,239m (10,626ft) & Jackson is 3,184m (10,446ft).Mt Paget on South Georgia island is the highest mountain on a British Overseas Territory outside the Antarctic.

3. China starts world's biggest floating solar project: A unit of China (Three Gorges Corp.) is building a 1 billion yuan floating solar power plant, the world’s biggest, in the nation’s eastern province of Anhui. They started building the 150-megawatt project in July and part of the plant was connected to the grid. The project features panels fixed to floats on the surface of a lake that formed after a coal mine collapsed. The entire facility is expected to come online by May 2018.

1. Construction equipment industry expected to grow at 14 %: According to the Chairman of (ICECTT) International Construction Equipment and Construction Technology Trade Fair Vipin Sondhi, the construction equipment industry is expected to grow at 14% after Union Government’s decision to spend over 10 billion dollars over next few years in the infrastructure sector.

1. India bags 4 Youth Olympic Games quotas, 21 Medals at Asian Championship: India bagged 21medals (six gold, eight Silver & seven bronze) at the 10th Asian Championship 10m Rifle/Pistol at Wako City Japan and also booked 4 Youth Olympic Games quotas. Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker booked quota places for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) by winning a gold and a silver each. Chaudhary has won both the individual as well as the Team gold in the men's 10m Air Pistol Youth event, while Bhaker clinched a silver in the women's 10m Air Pistol Youth. India claimed another silver in junior women's 10m Air Pistol.
