Daily GK Update- 31st May, 2022

 

NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. North India’s first Industrial Biotech Park inaugurated at Kathua in J&K: Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha and Union minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated the north India’s first Industrial Biotech Park constructed at Ghatti near Kathua. The Industrial Biotech Park at Kathua will transform the economy and enable scientists to tackle the challenges of climate change. The enabling infrastructure will fuel a new wave of innovation and impact various sectors, from health and agriculture to cosmetics and materials.

About the Industrial Biotech Park:

a)      With new biotech capabilities and innovation, J&K, bestowed with more than 3500 medicinal plant species, will be able to harness market advantages in the most effective way and help the farmers to generate more income, asserted the Lt Governor.

b)      The new Industrial Development Scheme has enabled J&K to fetch investment of more than Rs 38,800 crore as of date, which also includes proposals of 338 industrial units associated with the biotech sector in some way or the other.

c)       The Biotech Park would act as the hub for the incubation of new ideas and will act as a robust platform to support the agri-entrepreneurs, startups, progressive farmers, scientists, scholars and students not only from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh but also from nearby states of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

 

2. Ease of living: Common platform called Jan Samarth to be launched soon: The government intends to launch Jan Samarth, a unified platform for the delivery of multiple initiatives administered by several ministries and departments, in order to make life easier for the average man. The new portal will initially enrol 15 credit-linked government initiatives, as part of the Narendra Modi government’s objective of minimum government maximal governance.

Key Points:

a)      They noted that because some of the Centrally Sponsored Schemes include various agencies, the services will be gradually increased based on compatibility.

b)      Different ministries, for example, run initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and the Credit Linked Capital Subsidy Scheme (CLCSS).

c)       The proposed portal aims to put various schemes together on a single platform so that beneficiaries can access them easily. State Bank of India and other lenders are doing pilot testing and tying up loose ends before the official launch, according to the statement.

d)      Because of the portal’s open architecture, state governments and other organisations will be able to add their plans to the platform in the future.

e)      To make it easier for borrowers, the government developed a platform in 2018 that offered a variety of credit products, including MSME, home, auto, and personal loans.

f)        Various state-owned banks can now approve loans for MSMEs and other borrowers in principle in 59 minutes, compared to the previous turnaround time of 20-25 days.

                               

3. Justice Mohanty gets additional charge of Lokpal chairperson: President Ram Nath Kovind has given justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty the additional charge of Lokpal chairperson after justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose completed his term as the Lokpal chief. At present, there are six members in the Lokpal. President Ram Nath Kovind had on March 23, 2019, administered the oath of office to justice Ghose as the Lokpal chairperson. Key Points:

a)      Two posts of judicial members have been lying vacant for over two years.

b)      The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, which envisages the appointment of a Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in states to look into cases of corruption against certain categories of public servants, was passed in 2013.

c)       A Lokpal chief and members are appointed for a term of five years or until attaining the age of 70 years.

d)      A Lokpal chief and its members are appointed by the President after obtaining the recommendations of a selection committee headed by the Prime Minister and comprising the speaker of the Lok Sabha, the Leader of Opposition in the lower house, the Chief Justice of India or a judge of the Supreme Court nominated by him, and an eminent jurist as recommended by the chairperson and members of the selection panel.

1. Fortune 500 list: Elon Musk, world’s richest man, was 2021’s highest paid CEO: Elon Musk, the multi-billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX highest-paid executive in the world. Musk has topped the Fortune’s new list of the most highly compensated CEOs on the Fortune 500. In 2021, Musk “realized” compensation worth almost USD 23.5 billion, from exercising some Tesla stock options awarded in a 2018 multiyear “moonshot” grant. After Musk, the 10 most highly compensated Fortune 500 CEOs of 2021 are all tech and biotech CEOs, including the heads of Apple, Netflix, and Microsoft.

2. World No Tobacco Day: 31st May: World No Tobacco Day is observed on 31st May globally. This yearly celebration aims to raise awareness amid the global citizens about not only the dangers of using tobacco but also the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations. The theme for 2022 is Tobacco: Threat to our environment. The Day is an annual celebration that informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight tobacco use, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living.

History of the day: In 1987, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38, calling for April 7, 1988, to be “a world no-smoking day” and in 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, calling for the celebration of World No-Tobacco Day, every year on May 31.

2. Women’s T20 Challenge: Supernovas Beat Velocity: Supernovas won the Women’s T20 Challenge 2022 with a four-run victory over Velocity in the title clash. West Indies T20 specialist Deandra Dottin shined with both bat and ball as she powered Supernovas to a record third Women’s T20 Challenge title triumph with a four-run victory over Velocity. The Women’s T20 Challenge is an Indian women’s cricket 20-20 tournament organised by BCCI.

Supernovas had won the first two editions of the Women’s T20 Challenge in 2018 and 2019 before losing to Trailblazers in the final in 2020. The tournament was not held last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. India Post Payments Bank introduced issuer charges for AePS: India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), Department of Post (DoP), and Ministry of Communication have introduced issuer charges for the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS). AePS Issuer transaction charges will be in effect from June 15, 2022. AePS is a bank-led model that enables online interoperable financial inclusion transactions at the Point of Sale (MicroATM) using Aadhaar verification through any bank’s business correspondent. AePS provides six different transaction types.

The monthly first 3 cumulative AePS Issuer transactions, such as cash withdrawal, cash deposit, and mini statement, will be provided free of charge. Over the free transaction limit, AePS issuer cash withdrawals and cash deposits will be charged Rs. 20 plus GST for each transaction and mini statement transactions will be charged Rs. 5 plus GST per transaction.

2. FIEO launches first-of-its-kind B2B digital marketplace for exporters, MSMEs and farmers: The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has launched the first-of-its-kind online marketplace for Indian exporters and foreign buyers. The marketplace – Indian Business Portal – will act as a B2B digital marketplace to help micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) exporters, artisans and farmers to identify new markets for their products and grow their sales globally. Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Anupriya Patel, was present at the launch.

The marketplace has been designed and developed in partnership with GlobalLinker, which already provides a business networking platform for SMEs and startups. The portal will digitize Indian exporters and help them become discoverable online, promote exports from all Indian states, and showcase a wider range of products and services. More than 2,000 small businesses have already joined, listing over 40,000 products and services. FIEO will promote the marketplace worldwide.

1. CCEA cleared sale of GoI’s 29.5% stake in Hindustan Zinc: Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the government’s 29.5% stake sale in Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL). The sale of a 29.58% stake represents more than 124.96 crore shares which would raise around Rs 38,000 crores at the current market price. This decision will strengthen the government’s disinvestment drive in the current fiscal year. The government has budgeted 65,000 crores from PSU disinvestment and strategic sale. Shares of HZL closed at ₹305.05, up 3.14% on the BSE. During the day, the scrip touched a high of ₹317.30 a share.

History of Hindustan Zinc Limited business: Till April 2002, the Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) was a government-owned company. In 2002, the government offloaded a 26% stake in HZL to Sterlite Opportunities and Ventures Ltd (SOVL). Vedanta group later bought 20% from the market and another 18.92% from the government in November 2003, raising its ownership in Hindustan Zinc to 64.92 per cent. Vedanta, led by mining magnate Anil Agarwal, recently said the company can buy just 5 per cent additional stake in the HZL considering the price of the shares on offer.

1. Shaunak Sen’s documentary ‘All That Breathes’ wins L’OEil d’Or award at Cannes Film Festival: Filmmaker Shaunak Sen’s documentary All That Breathes, India’s only entry at Cannes Film Festival 2022, has won the 2022 L’Oeil d’Or, the festival’s top prize for documentaries. “L’Oeil d’Or goes to a film that, in a world of destruction, reminds us that every life matters, and every small action matters. The award includes a cash prize of 5,000 euros (₹4.16 lakh approximately).

About the L’Oeil d’Or documentary award: The L’Oeil d’Or documentary award, also known as The Golden Eye award, was created in 2015 by the French-speaking authors’ society LaScam in collaboration with the Cannes Film Festival.

Other awards won by All That Breathes documentary: All That Breathes had also won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Recently, it was acquired by HBO, a US-based cable network. After its release in the US late this year, the documentary will debut on HBO and streaming service HBO Max in 2023.

1. Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala shot dead: 29-year old Punjabi singer, Sidhu Moose Wala was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Jawaharke village of Mansa district, Punjab. The incident happened a day after the Punjab Police ordered the withdrawal of security of his security along with more than 420 people, including former MLAs, Jathedars of two Takhts, heads of Deras, and police officers.

Sidhu Moose Wala: Born on June 17, 1993, Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu aka Sidhu Moose Wala belonged to the Moose Wala village in Mansa district. Moose Wala had a fan following running into millions and was popular for his rap. Moose Wala held a degree in electrical engineering. He had learned music during his college days and had later moved to Canada. Sidhu Moose Wala had contested this year’s Punjab assembly election on a Congress ticket from Mansa and was defeated by AAP candidate Vijay Singla by a huge margin of 63,000 votes.

NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Rajasthan adopts revised criteria for IG Shehri Rozgar Guarantee Yojana: New rules for the implementation of the Indira Gandhi Shahari Rozgar Yojana have been accepted by Rajasthan Chief Minister Shri Ashok Gehlot. The scheme, modelled after the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Jobs Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), was introduced by Gehlot in the 2022-23 budget to create employment in metropolitan areas. Key Points:

a)      Families living in urban areas will receive 100 days of employment each year under the new urban employment scheme. According to an official release, the state government will invest Rs 800 crore each year on this ambitious plan.

b)      According to the new instructions, everyone between the ages of 18 and 60 who live in the local body area would be enrolled under the system using their Jan Aadhaar cards.

c)       Under the proposal, the work will be approved and carried out by state and district committees.

 

2. 3rd Global Organic Expo 2022 starts in New Delhi: 3rd Global Organic Expo 2022 is poised to be a major platform for Organic Producers, Aggregators, Processors, Value Chain Integrators, and the Industry Partners by offering Global level conference, with an apt theme “Profitability for Humanity”. More than 200 organic products and service companies participated in the previous events. It offers a great opportunity for showcasing the work in the field of organics to the world. Objectives of Global Organic Expo:

a)      Reducing cost and achieving sustainable productivity through certified organic products and capacity development of organic production systems

b)      Organic products will focus on creating market linkages between producers and marketers with the ultimate objective of increasing income without any chemical inputs

c)       Sector and People: Organic Expo allows all organic customers, suppliers, partners, and potential new customers to meet in a very comfortable way in person.

3. Delhi Customs launches Project ‘NIGAH’ at ICD Garhi Harsaru, Gurugram: Chief Commissioner, Delhi Customs Zone, Surjit Bhujabal inaugurated project ‘NIGAH’ at ICD Garhi Harsaru, Gurugram. ICTM (ICD Container Tracking Module) has been developed in collaboration with the Custodian M/s. GRFL. A live demo of the project was given to all the participants.

About the Project NIGAH: Project NIGAH is an initiative to track container by using ICTM (ICD Container Tracking Module) which will help in better visibility of the container movement inside the ICD. It will help Customs to expedite long standing containers and monitor timely clearances, thereby enhancing Ease of Doing Business along with ensuring lead preventive checks. This innovative development at local level to provide granular level visibility supporting ease of monitoring and to synergise the technological platforms introduced by the government with other stakeholders’ platforms, which will lead India to high standards of EXIM trade. He encouraged other Custodians to replicate the project at ICDs for the benefit of trade.

 

4. New Arunachal monkey named after Sela pass: A new species of old world monkey, “The Sela Macaque” was geographically separated from the Arunachal Macaque by the Sela, an eastern Himalayan pass located at an altitude of 13,700 feet. Sela macaque ( Macaca selai), the new-to-science primate was identified and analysed by a team of experts from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the University of Calcutta. Their study has been published in the latest edition of Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution.

Phylogenetics relates to the evolutionary development and diversification of a species or group of organisms. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Sela macaque was geographically separated from the Arunachal macaque (Macaca munzala) of the Tawang district by Sela. This mountain pass acted as a barrier by restricting the migration of individuals of these two species for approximately two million years. Sela is situated between Dirang and Tawang towns in western Arunachal Pradesh.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. 2022 Global Food Policy Report: Climate Change & Food Systems: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations has issued a warning about an impending crisis: Climate change has triggered a code red for humanity, requiring immediate action. This dilemma is inextricably linked to food systems. Climate change has already begun to diminish agricultural output and disrupt supply chains in many countries, particularly in the poor world, placing strain on livelihoods and threatening to considerably increase hunger and malnutrition, making adaptation efforts critical. Key Points:

a)      Researchers from the International Food Policy Research Institute, Alliance of Bioversity and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, International Water Management Institute, and other partners identify six policy priorities that can and should be implemented now in the IFPRI’s 2022 Global Food Policy Report.

b)      Climate change has an impact on food systems, and food systems are also key contributors to climate change. According to recent estimates, food systems account for more than a third of the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change, making their reduction critical to any mitigation attempt.

c)       Through the establishment and maintenance of carbon sinks in forests, oceans, and soils, agriculture, forestry, and other land use is now the only sector with a substantial potential to become a net emissions sink—pulling more GHGs out of the atmosphere than it emits.

d)      Meeting the problems of climate change will necessitate a complete redesign of our food systems, which will necessitate massive legislative changes, significant investment, and an enabling environment that encourages and embraces innovation.

e)      The report’s six policy goals are centred on developing countries, many of which are likely to bear the brunt of climate change’s effects but lack the resources to support adaptation and long-term food system transformation.

 

2. World Vape Day: 30th May: World Vape Day is observed on 30th May across the globe to create awareness about the alternatives to harmful tobacco products and highlights the relative safety of e-cigarettes and their potential as harm reduction and smoking cessation tools. World Vape Day (May 30) is observed on the day before World No Tobacco Day (May 31), observed by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

E-Cigarette: Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik invented electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in 2003 as an alternative to conventional smoking. There are several types of e-cigarettes which are the most common form of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) and Electronic Non-Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENNDS). The system uses a liquid to create aerosols which are inhaled by the users. This liquid may contain additives, flavours and chemicals that can be toxic to health. E-Cigarettes are estimated to be 95% safer than smoking cigarettes.

1. Tokyo Bronze Medallist Lovlina Borgohain elected as IBA’s Athletes’ Committee Chair: Tokyo Bronze Medallist, Lovlina Borgohain was elected as IBA’s Athletes’ Committee Chair. International Boxing Association (IBA) announced that Indian boxer and Tokyo Olympics Bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain has received the highest number of votes during the election held at the 2022 Women’s World Championships and thus has been elected as the chair and a voting member on the Board of Directors for the IBA’s Athletes’ Committee.

Further, Indian boxer Shiva Thapa has also been elected as a member of the IBA Athletes Committee following the election held during the 2021 IBA Men’s World Championships. The duo, who are both under the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) have confirmed that they have accepted their roles and look forward to representing India and other boxers at the Board of Directors’ meeting.

1. Postal Department and India Post payments Bank (IPPB) Aarohan 4.0 begins in Shimla: Two days meeting of senior functionaries of the Postal Department and India Post payments Bank (IPPB), AAROHAN 4.0 started in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The agenda of the meeting is to discuss and deliberate ways to further deepen the Financial Inclusion drive in the country and to provide banking solutions to every citizen of India. Postal Department along with IPPB is working on the vision of the Prime Minister’s Digital India initiative to promote digital payments and bring digital banking services to every nook and corner of the country in a customer-friendly manner.

 

2. MUFG Bank of Japan receives approval to open a branch at GIFT City: MUFG Bank, a Japanese lender, will open a branch in Ahmedabad’s Gujarat International Financial Tec City (GIFT City) to conduct foreign currency lending. This will be the company’s sixth location in India. With a broader range of financial services, MUFG can better serve its domestic and international clients. It has offices in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Neemrana at the moment. Key Points:

a)      As of December 2021, India’s funds-based exposure was Rs 15,671.4 crore, while non-fund exposure was Rs 5,169.1 crore. According to filings on the lender’s website, the lender’s capital adequacy ratio was 21.13 percent in December 2021.

b)      Foreign currency-denominated loans are illegal in India in principle due to laws, however GIFT City allows you to book India-related offshore business on the Indian coasts.

c)       In March 2022, MUFG announced the creation of a $300 million investment fund for Indian start-ups. This fund aims to not only help India’s economy grow monetarily, but also to foster partnership between MUFG and promising tech and IT enterprises.

d)      This would enable the bank to satisfy their clients’ diversified finance needs in the Indian market, which is likely to continue to grow in the future.

 

BUSINESS AND ECONOMY

 

1. RBI issued guidelines for certified jewellers’ Gold import: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced new guidelines to permit qualified jewellers to import gold through the India International Bullion Exchange IFSC Ltd. (IIBX) or any other exchange. IFSCA and the DGFT, the Government of India, must sanction the other exchanges. All payments by authorised jewellers for gold imports through IIBX must be done using an exchange mechanism recognised by IFSCA in accordance with the IFSC Act and regulations, according to the RBI. Key Points:

a)      According to the new recommendations, approved dealers banks may allow Qualified Jewellers to make eleven-day advance payments for gold imports through IIBX in accordance with the existing Foreign Trade Policy and Regulations published under the IFSC Act.

b)      In accordance with the terms of the sale contract or other document in the nature of an irrevocable purchase order in terms of the IFSC Act and regulations made thereunder by IFSCA, AD banks shall ensure that advance remittance for such import through exchange/s authorised by IFSCA is in accordance with the terms of the sale contract or other document in the nature of an irrevocable purchase order in terms of the IFSC Act and regulations made thereunder by IFSCA.

c)       Furthermore, licenced dealers banks must perform all due diligence and guarantee that the remittances sent are only for bona fide import transactions through IFSCA-approved exchanges.

d)      The RBI further noted that advance remittances for gold imports should not be used in any way to import gold worth more than the advance remittance made.

e)      QJ shall send the Bill of Entry (or any other applicable document issued/approved by Customs Department for evidence of import) issued by Customs Authorities to the AD bank from which advance payment has been made if gold is imported through IIBX.

1. Cannes Film Festival 2022: The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival came to a glittering close with the nine-member jury giving out the big awards at the prestigious festival. The awards were selected by a nine-member jury headed by French actor Vincent Lindon and presented in a closing ceremony inside Cannes’ Grand Lumière Theater. The jury included an Indian face in actor Deepika Padukone. A separate section of two awards for documentary films was adjudged earlier on Saturday. Those awards were adjudged by a separate jury.
