1. Sudha Shivkumar becomes 40th President of FICCI Ladies Organisation: Chennai-based Sudha Shivkumar has assumed the charge as the 40th president of FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) at the 39th annual session. FLO is the oldest women-led and women-centric business chamber in Southeast Asia. She is a lawyer and investment banker by profession and presently serving as a director at auto ancillaries. She was the Chairperson of the FLO Chennai Chapter in 2016-17. FLO is the women's wing of the FICCI

 

2. India could become world's second-largest solar manufacturer by 2026: According to the new joint report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and JMK Research and Analytics, India could become the world’s second-largest solar photovoltaic manufacturer by 2026, after China. India’s cumulative module manufacturing nameplate capacity more than doubled from 18GW in March 2022 to 38GW in March 2023. In terms of upcoming PV manufacturing installations, Gujarat would be the leading state in India.

 

3. PM Modi flagged off Bhopal-New Delhi Vande Bharat Express: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flagged off the 11^th Vande Bharat Express train between Rani Kamlapati Railway Station in Madhya Pradesh and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station in Delhi. The train will cover a distance of 701 kilometres in 7 hours 30 minutes and will run on all days except Saturday. It will have stoppages at Veerangana Laxmibai Jhansi, Gwalior and Agra. Vande Bharat train has showcased the skill, potential and confidence of the nation.

 

4. Eravikulam National Park gets a fernarium: Eravikulam National Park (ENP) in Kerala, the natural habitat of Nilgiri tahr in Munnar, has a new attraction — a Fernarium set up inside the park. This is the first time such a fern collection has been established in the hill station. The Eravikulam National Park is known for its diverse range of flora and fauna, and the introduction of the fernarium is a step towards educating visitors about the park’s biodiversity. Ferns are part of the Epiphytic family. Fern grows naturally in a soilless condition. The plants obtain water and nutrients through leaching from trees. It has 52 varieties of ferns have already been planted in the new Fernarium.

 

5. PM Modi inaugurated CBI’s diamond jubilee celebrations: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The premier investigating police agency of India, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), completes its 60 years of service to the nation this year. About CBI The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was established by a resolution of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, dated April 1, 1963. It is not a statutory body but it is empowered to investigate under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946. The establishment of the CBI was recommended by the Santhanam Committee (1962–1964). It works under the Ministry of Personnel, Pension & Public Grievances, Government of India. 6. 1-7 April – Prevention of Blindness Week 2023: The Government of India organizes the Prevention of Blindness Week from April 1-7 every year to raise awareness about the causes and prevention of blindness. Objective – To support individuals with visual impairments, and to promote access to eye care services. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur, the first health minister of India, established the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness and along with it, the observance of the week was started in 1960. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 2.2 billion people globally have a near or distant vision problem while at least one billion cases could have been prevented with proper care. Also, half of these visual impairment cases are yet to be addressed.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. NASA astronaut Christina Koch becomes the first woman to go around the moon: The American Space Agency, NASA has selected the first woman astronaut, Christina Koch for its Artemis II mission. Other crew members: Victor Glover (First Black Astronaut) and Reid Wiseman of NASA, and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). It will involve a fly-by of the moon and a 10-day journey back to Earth. It is part of NASA's Artemis program, which aims to land the first woman and the next man on the moon by 2024.

 

2. Bahrain launches Golden Licence to attract large-scale investment projects: Bahrain's government has launched a new initiative called 'Golden Licence' to incentivize investments and the creation of jobs. It is designed to provide streamlined services and benefits to local and foreign businesses with large-scale investment projects in Bahrain. Eligibility for the Licence: Companies with significant strategic projects and investments exceeding US$50 million or those creating more than 500 jobs in Bahrain.

 

3. Bhutan king arrives in India for a two-day visit: Bhutan king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck arrived in India for a two-day visit and was received by EAM S Jaishankar in New Delhi. Both countries will discuss hydro-power cooperation, economic and trade partnership, space cooperation, scholarships, youth-centric and STEM-based initiatives, and establishing  digital infrastructure matters. The defense and security ties between the two countries have seen significant growth in the last few years.

 

4. International Day Of Mine Awareness And Action 2023: 4th April: International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is observed every year on April 4 to raise awareness against explosive mines and gather assistance towards their eradication. Theme 2023: Mine Action Cannot Wait The UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) leads the mine action community, which plays an important role in achieving the goals of mine action. On 8 December 2005, the General Assembly declared that 4 April to observe as this day.

 

5. India, US to begin major air combat exercise in Kalaikunda, West Bengal: The Indian Air Force and the US Air Force started the joint exercise ' Cope India' at Kalaikunda airbase in West Bengal from April 10 to 21, 2023. This exercise will enhance operational capability and interoperability between the two air forces. While Japan will also join as an “observer” in the exercise and witness “air combat and mobility elements” operating from multiple air bases like Kalaikunda, Panagarh, Agra, and Hindon.

 

6. France invited PM Modi for Bastille Day parade: France has invited PM Narendra Modi to visit Paris as a guest at the annual Bastille Day parade, which will be held in July 2023. The PM and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to discuss several major agreements including those on the Indo-Pacific region, nuclear power, and defense, as the two countries mark the 25th year of their strategic partnership. Earlier, Manmohan Singh was invited as the Bastille Day parade guest in 2009.

 

7. IOC signed deal with Russia’s Rosneft to raise oil imports: Russia’s largest oil producer Rosneft and India’s top refiner Indian Oil Corp have signed a term agreement to substantially increase oil supplies and diversify oil grades delivered to India. The parties also discussed ways of expanding cooperation between Rosneft Oil Company and Indian companies in the entire value chain of the energy sector, including possibilities of making payments in national currencies. India has been the biggest buyer of Russia’s benchmark Urals grade crude in March. Deliveries to India are set to account for more than 50% of all seaborne Urals exports this month, with China in second place. Russia for the first time has become one of the five largest trading partners of India as the volume of trade between the countries reached $38.4 billion in 2022.

 

8. Italian government seeks to ban English in official communication: Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party has introduced new legislation which proposes a fine of up to Euro 100,000 (Rs 82,46,550) for using any foreign language, especially English, in official communication. The bill was introduced by Fabio Rampelli, a member of the lower chamber of deputies and is supported by the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. It also prohibits the use of English in official documentation, including “acronyms and names” of job roles in companies operating in the country. Italian must be the primary language used in all offices, even those which communicate with non-Italian-speaking foreigners, according to the first article of the legislation.

 

9. Israel launches new Ofek-13 spy satellite into orbit: Israel has successfully launched the “Ofek-13″ spy satellite into space by the Shavit launch vehicle, from Palmachim Airbase spaceport. This satellite was manufactured by state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The ‘Ofek 13’ is the most advanced of its kind with unique radar observation capabilities and will enable intelligence collection in any weather and conditions of visibility. It is the latest in a series of domestically produced satellites that were first put into orbit in 1988. Israel joined the club of space powers in 1988 with the deployment of its first Ofek (Horizon in Hebrew) satellite.

Gregoria Tunjung won 2023 Spain Masters women's title: Gregoria Mariska Tunjung from Indonesia has clinched the Women's title in the 2023 Spain Masters, held in Madrid, Spain from 28 March-2 April 2023. She defeated Indian Badminton player, PV Sindhu. While Japanese badminton player, Kenta Nishimoto won the men's title. Other winners:

·       Men's doubles: He Jiting and Zhou Haodong (China)

·       Women's doubles: Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning (China)

·       Mixed doubles: Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje (Denmark)

 

2. Max Verstappen wins F1 Australian Grand Prix: Red Bull's driver, Max Verstappen, won his first Australian Grand Prix 2023, held at Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, Australia. While Seven-time world champion, L. Hamilton (Mercedes driver) finished second followed by F. Alonso (Aston Martin) and L. Stroll (Aston Martin). The Australian Grand Prix is a motor race held annually in Australia since 1928. The next F1 Azerbaijan GP will be held in Baku City Circuit, Azerbaijan on April 30, 2023.

 

3. Daniil Medvedev Wins Maiden Miami Opens Title 2023: Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev claimed his fourth title of the year by defeating Jannik Sinner in a closely-contested final match in Miami Opens 2023. Medvedev has now won 24 out of his last 25 matches, including his latest victory at the prestigious Miami Open. The win marked his first-ever title win at the Miami Open. Medvedev clinched his fifth Masters 1000 title and 19th title overall by beating Sinner, who has also been in impressive form this season, with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-3.

 

BANKING AND FINANCE

 

1. Public sector banks transfer ₹35,012 cr unclaimed deposits to RBI: The Public sector banks (PSBs) have transferred unclaimed deposits of ₹35,012 crore as of February 2023 to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). These deposits have not been operated for 10 years or more. SBI tops the list with an unclaimed amount of ₹8,086 crore, while PNB has ₹5,340 crore and Canara Bank has ₹4,558 crore. These unclaimed deposits belong to 10.24 crore accounts transferred to the RBI. MoS for Finance Bhagwat Karad shared this information in Lok Sabha.

 

2. Axis Bank launches business management solution for merchants: Axis Bank and VISA jointly launched a mobile application, 'Digital Dukaan' to empower merchants to accept payments through various digital modes. t is designed to address business requirements such as accepting digital payments, inventory management, and billing. This Android Smart POS application has an in-built camera with an LED flashlight to enable scanning of product barcodes and allow a tap-and-pay option for transactions up to Rs 5,000.

 

3. World Bank: India's economy to slow in FY24, GDP growth seen at 6.3%: World Bank has predicted India's economy to slow in the current fiscal (2023-24) to 6.3% on the back of shrinkage in consumption due to slower income growth. The report estimates India's inflation to moderate from 6.6% to 5.5% in the current fiscal. The Current Account Deficit (CAD) is expected to be 5.2% in FY24. The Economic Survey had projected a growth of 6.5% for the current fiscal while RBI's latest projection pegs growth for FY24 at 6.4%.

 

OBITUARIES

 

1. Oscar-winning Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto passes away: Veteran composer and green activist Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away at the age of 71 due to cancer. He was a Japanese composer, record producer, and actor who pursued a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). As a film-score composer, he won an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Grammy, and two Golden Globe Awards. He won an Academy Award with his score for the 1987 period epic “The Last Emperor".

 

2. Former Indian Cricketer Salim Durani passed away: Former India all-rounder Salim Durani passed away at the age of 88 in Jamnagar, Gujarat. He made a significant contribution in the series against England in 1961-62. In the last two Tests, Salim led India to victory. He played 29 Tests for India from 1960 to 1973, scoring 1,202 runs at an average of 25.04, with one century (104 against West Indies in 1962) and seven fifties. He was a left-arm spinner and claimed 75 wickets at 35.42 apiece. In first-class cricket, he played for Saurashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

1. Vice-Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh is new Vice-Chief of Navy: Vice Admiral, Sanjay Jasjit Singh assumed the charge of the vice chief of naval staff on April 2, 2023. He succeeded Vice Admiral SN Ghormade who retired after over 39 years of service. He is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, Pune, and was commissioned in 1986 in the executive branch of the Indian Navy. In his career, he has served on most classes of ships of the Indian Navy and has held a range of command, training, and staff appointments.

 

2. RBI appoints Neeraj Nigam as executive director: The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Neeraj Nigam as executive director (ED) who will look after four departments, including consumer education and protection. Before being promoted to ED, he was heading the Bhopal regional office of the RBI as director. During his long career, he served in Regulation and Supervision, human resource management, premises, currency management, bank accounts, and other areas in the Reserve Bank.

 

3. Odisha CM disburses Rs 877 crore KALIA assistance to farmers: The Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has released Rs 877 crore to 43 lakh farmers through direct benefit transfer (DBT) mode on the occasion of Utkal Divas (April 1). The state government has extended another round of funds to Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) for undertaking the Kharif operation. About KALIA scheme: It was launched in December 2018. Aim: To reduce poverty and accelerate agricultural prosperity

 

4. Sarbananda Sonowal launched Sagar Setu Mobile App: Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has launched the App Version of National Logistics Portal (Marine) Sagar-Setu in New Delhi. The app has been envisaged with deliverables covering features like a Login Module, Letter of Credit, Bank Guarantee, Certification, and Track & Trace etc. It will provide real-time information on activities that are generally not within reach of the importer, exporter, and customs broker including vessel-related information, gate, container freight stations, and transactions at fingertips. It also enables digital transactions for payments required for the clearance process of import and export like container freight station charges, shipping line charges, and transportation charges.

 

5. Rajasthan govt approves proposal to set up 3 new medical colleges: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot approved a proposal to set up three new medical colleges in the state. The three new medical colleges will be established in Pratapgarh, Jalore, and Rajsamand. Each medical college will be constructed at the cost of Rs 250 crore and Rs 75 crore would be spent for necessary equipment, furniture and books in these colleges.

 

6. RG Patel appointed as expert member of ART and Surrogacy Board: Renowned gynecologist and obstetrician, RG Patel has been appointed as an expert member of the National Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy Board by the union health ministry. Dr Patel’s appointment to the National Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy Board, which functions under the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, is for the purposes of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021 and the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021. Dr Patel is a gynaecologist, infertility and In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) specialist. He has been performing IVF, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and ovum donation procedures for more than 22 years.

He performs around 1,500 IVF and ICSI procedures a year and has facilitated 20,000+ live births through such procedures. He has also successfully conducted 2,800 Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) procedures.

 

7. 1 April – Foundation Day of Reserve Bank of India (RBI): The Foundation Day of the Reserve Bank of India is celebrated on 1 April every year. RBI was established on 1 April 1935 as per the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act 1934. It started functioning from 1 April 1935. The Central Office of the RBI, initially set up in Kolkata, was permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937. Sir Osborne Smith the first Governor of the Bank. It was nationalized in 1949 and now the government of India is the owner of RBI. The RBI is the central bank of India and is responsible for regulating the country’s monetary and credit system. It is also responsible for issuing currency and managing the country’s foreign exchange reserves. The RBI works closely with the government of India to formulate and implement monetary and fiscal policies that promote economic growth and stability. It was set up as a private shareholder’s bank with a capital of Rs 5 crores.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Israel's former envoy to India Ron Malka appointed as Haifa Port Chairman: Adani Group has appointed the former envoy of Israel to India, Ron Malka as the Executive Chairman of the Haifa Port Company. He served as the ambassador of Israel to India from 2018-2021. It is the second-largest port in Israel in terms of shipping containers. The Adani Group officially took over this port in January 2023. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone and Israel's Gadot Group won the tender in July 2022 to privatize the Port of Haifa for USD 1.18 billion.

 

2. OPEC members announce cut in oil production: OPEC members including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, and Algeria have announced voluntary oil production cuts exceeding one million barrels per day from May 2023 until the end of the year. Reason: It is a precautionary measure aimed at supporting the stability of the oil market. OPEC slashed its collective output by two million barrels per day last year. OPEC is a group of 23 oil-producing countries.

 

3. PM Modi invited to France for Bastille Day parade: France has invited PM Narendra Modi to visit Paris as a guest at the annual Bastille Day parade, which will be held in July 2023. 4. Georgia became first American state to pass resolution condemning Hinduphobia: The Georgia Assembly has passed a resolution condemning Hinduphobia, making it the first American State to take such a legislative measure. The resolution condemns Hinduphobia and anti-Hindu bigotry and states that ‘Hinduism is the world’s largest and oldest religion’ and 1.2 billion people in more than 100 countries of the world follow this religion. The resolution said that this religion incorporates diverse traditions and faith with values of acceptance, mutual respect and peace. The resolution states that the American-Hindu community has been a major contributor to fields as diverse as medicine, science and engineering, information technology, hospitality, finance, education, manufacturing, energy and retail. The proposal was introduced by Representatives Lauren McDonald and Todd Jones from Atlanta’s Forsyth County.

 

5. NASA appoints Indian-origin Amit Kshatriya to head ‘Moon To Mars’ Programme: An Indian-American software and robotics engineer Amit Kshatriya has been appointed as the first head of NASA’s Moon to Mars Programme, with immediate effect. With this programme, NASA plans to ensure a long-term presence on the Moon to prepare for humanity’s next giant leap to the Red Planet. Kshatriya will serve as first head of the office, with immediate effect, the agency. This new office resides within the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, reporting to its Associate Administrator Jim Free. NASA Administrator: Bill Nelson

 

6. 2 April – World Autism Awareness Day: World Autism Awareness Day is observed every year on 2 April. Objective – To raise awareness about autism and promote acceptance, understanding, and inclusion of people suffering from disability. According to the United Nations General Assembly, the day aims to “highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of autistic people so that they can live full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society.

1. India's forex reserves rise $5.98 billion to $578.78 billion: According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, India's foreign exchange reserves increased by $5.98 billion to $578.78 billion on March 24, 2023. Data for the previous week showed that India's foreign exchange reserves rose to $572.8 billion, the highest level since early February 2023. India's foreign currency assets (FCA) also increased from $4.38 billion to $509.72 billion. India's gold reserves rose by $1.37 billion to $45.48 billion.

 

2. SBI signed MoU with Godrej Capital to offer banking products, services: State Bank of India (SBI) has signed a strategic MoU with Godrej Capital for various financial products and offerings. Both organizations joined together to make financial solutions more accessible and affordable, unlocking opportunities for financial inclusion. This association leverages the strengths of both groups by facilitating a gamut of financial services provided by the bank, including, and not limited to, banking products, credit cards, wealth management, Life Insurance, and General Insurance as preferred partners.

 

3. Fino Payments Bank and Rajasthan Royals ties up for Digital Banking Partner: Fino Payments Bank has renewed its association with Rajasthan Royals (RR) for season 16 of India’s biggest premier cricket competition. 1. Anjali Sharma conquered Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, wearing Luanchari: Anjali Sharma of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh has conquered Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, wearing Luanchari. She is working to promote Gaddi culture on the peaks of the mountains. Lunachari is a traditional dress of Himachal Pradesh. Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters) is the tallest mountain in Africa and the world’s largest free-standing mountain. It has three main volcanic peaks namely Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira.

1. Former CJ of Calcutta HC Thottathil B Radhakrishnan passes away: Former Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court Thottathil B Radhakrishnan passed away in Kochi at the age of 63. He also served as the Chief Justice of Telangana and Chattisgarh HC and was a  judge of the Kerala HC. He was an expert in civil, constitutional, and administrative matters. He also chaired the expert committee formed by the Kerala Forest Department to record details of houses and commercial establishments that surround wildlife sanctuaries.

1. ISRO successfully conducts the ‘Reusable Launch Vehicle' test: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in association with the DRDO and IAF successfully demonstrated a precise landing experiment for a Reusable Launch Vehicle Autonomous Landing Mission (RLV LEX) test. It was conducted at the Aeronautical Test Range (ATR), Chitradurga, Karnataka. This is a part of ISRO’s efforts to develop RLVs, or space planes/shuttles, which can travel to low earth orbits to deliver payloads and return to earth for use again.

 

2. India records highest ever defence export during FY 2022-23: In Financial Year 2022-23, India's defense exports have reached an all-time high of 15920 crore rupees, which is almost Rs 3,000 crore more than the previous financial year (2021-22). At present, India is now exporting to over 85 countries. India exports major platforms like Dornier-228, 155 mm Advanced Towed Artillery Guns (ATAGs), Brahmos Missiles, Akash Missile System, Simulators, Mine Protected Vehicles, Armoured Vehicles, PINAKA Rockets & Launchers, etc.

 

3. Women between 15-29 years spend more time than men doing Unpaid Labour: According to the report titled 'Women and Men in India 2022', released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, an average Indian woman aged between 15 and 29 spends 5.5 hours doing unpaid labor. While a man between 15 and 29 spends about 50 minutes daily doing work that yields no money. A senior woman (above 60 ) spends four hours a day doing unpaid labor, while a senior man spends 1.5 hours on the same.

 

4. Ministry of Defence Rs 1700 crore deal with BrahMos Aerospace: Ministry of Defence has inked a Rs 1,700 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for procurement of next-generation maritime mobile coastal batteries and BrahMos missiles. These systems will be equipped with supersonic BrahMos missiles and will significantly enhance the multi-directional maritime strike capability of the Indian Navy. BAPL is a joint venture between India and Russia making crucial contribution to augment the new generation surface-to-surface missile with enhanced ranges. This contract is going to give further boost to the indigenous production of critical weapon systems and ammunition with active participation of indigenous industries. This project will generate employment of more than 90,000 man-days over a period of four years. The delivery of these batteries is scheduled to commence from 2027.

 

5. 1 April – Odisha Day or Utkal Day: Odisha Day or Utkala Divas is celebrated on 1st April. This day is significant for the people of Odisha as it marks the formation of the state on 1st April, 1936. Odisha has its 88th foundation day on 1st April 2023. Odisha came into existence back in the year 1936, over a decade before India became independent of the British Raj. Odisha was previously part of the Bengal Presidency, but it was carved out as an independent state following a 3-decade-long struggle by the local people.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Finland becomes the 31st member of Nato: The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg has informed that Finland has become the 31st member of the alliance. Turkey’s approval has allowed the extension of NATO. Finland shares a long border (over 1,300 kilometers) with Russia, and its decision to join NATO was prompted by security concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, Turkey and Hungary have declined Sweden’s application to join NATO.

 

2. Israel launches new Ofek-13 spy satellite into orbit: Israel has successfully launched the “Ofek-13” spy satellite into space by the Shavit launch vehicle, from Palmachim Airbase spaceport. This satellite was manufactured by state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). It is the latest in a series of domestically produced satellites that were first put into orbit in 1988. Immediately after launch, the satellite successfully entered orbit and started transmitting data, and completed an initial series of tests

 

3. World Autism Awareness Day 2023: 2nd April: World Autism day is observed annually on April 2 to promote awareness and advocacy for the rights of people with autism. This year marks the 16th anniversary of the day. This year the theme is “Contribution of Autistic Individuals at Home, at Work, in the Arts, and Policymaking.” In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day, following a proposal put forward by the State of Qatar.

 

4. 10th Bilateral Maritime exercise SLINEX-2023 will be conducted in Colombo: The 10th Edition of the annual Indian – Sri Lanka Bilateral Maritime exercise, SLINEX-2023 was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The exercise is being conducted in two phases of three days each, the Harbour Phase followed by Sea Phase. The Indian Navy will be represented by INS Kiltan and INS Savitri while Sri Lanka Navy will have SLNS Vijayabahu and SLNS Samudura. SLINEX-2023 will aim to enhance inter-operability, improve mutual understanding and exchange best practices and procedures in multi-faceted Maritime operations between both Navies.

1. Aravindh Chithambaram wins Delhi International Open chess title: Aravindh Chithambaram has won the Delhi International Open chess title. Aravindh, who aggregated a massive 9.5 points from 10 rounds, collected Rs 6 lakh and the winner’s trophy from an event that offered Rs 45 lakh in prize money. Georgia’s Luka Paichadze took the second spot with nine points and gained Rs 5 lakh Aravindh Chithambaram Veerappan is an Indian chess grandmaster.

He won the Indian chess championships twice, in 2018 and 2019. He earned his international master title in 2014 and his grandmaster title in 2015.

1. India current account deficit narrows to 2.2% of GDP in Q3: According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India's current account deficit (CAD) has narrowed to $18.2 billion (2.2% of GDP) in the October to December quarter (Q3FY23) from 4.4% of the GDP in the quarter ending September 2022. Reason: The decline was mainly due to the narrowing of the merchandise trade deficit. Services exports reported a growth of 24.5% on a y-o-y basis. CAD: It is the difference between the inflow and outflow of foreign exchange.

 

2. Union Bank opens ‘Special Rupee Vostro’ account in Malaysia: Union Bank of India has become the first Indian bank to open its ‘Special Rupee Vostro’ account through its corresponding bank in Malaysia i.e. India International Bank of Malaysia for trade settlement in rupee. The trade between India and Malaysia can now be settled in the Indian rupee, in addition to the current modes of settlement in other currencies. In July 2022, RBI decided to allow the settlement of India’s international trade in rupee. Malaysia currency: Ringgit

 

3. Fiscal deficit till February hits 83% of FY23 target: According to the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), the government's fiscal deficit for April 2022-February 2023 has widened to Rs 14.54 lakh crore, i.e. accounted for 82.8% of the full-year target for 2022-23. In 2021-22, the Fiscal deficit in the first 11 months was 82.7% of that year's target. The Centre made an upward revision in its fiscal deficit target for 2022-23 in the 2023 Budget to Rs 17.55 lakh crore from Rs 16.61 lakh crore.

 

4. Irdai names LIC, GIC as 'domestic systemically important' insurers: Insurance regulator, IRDAI has identified Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), New India Assurance, and General Insurance Corporation (GIC Re) as domestic systemically important insurers (D-SIIs) for 2022-23. These were the same institutions identified as DSII in 2021-22. D-SIIs refer to insurers of such size, market importance, and domestic and global interconnectedness, whose distress or failure would cause a significant dislocation in the domestic financial system.

1. Sahitya Akademi winner Sarah Thomas passes away: Noted author Sara Thomas passed away at 88 due to age-related ailments. She is a two-time recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award. Her noted work ‘Narmadipudava’ won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 1979. She was also awarded the academy’s award in 2010 for her overall contribution to Malayalam literature. Her second novel ‘Muripadukal’ was made into a movie titled ‘Manimuzhakkam’ in 1976, which won several national and state awards.

1. India's unemployment rate rises to 3-month high of 7.8% in March 2023: According to the data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), India's unemployment rate increased to 7.8% in March 2023. The unemployment rate in the country surged in December 2022 to 8.30% but declined in January to 7.14%. It edged up again in February 2023 to 7.45%. In March 2023, the unemployment rate in urban areas of India reached 8.4%, while in rural areas it stood at 7.5%. In March 2023, unemployment was the highest in Haryana at 26.8%.

 

2. Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launches Sagar Setu Mobile App: Union Minister for Ports, Sarbananda Sonowal launched the App Version of the National Logistics Portal (Marine) named Sagar-Setu. The app has been envisaged with deliverables covering features like a Login Module, Letter of Credit, Bank Guarantee, Certification, and Track & Trace etc. Benefits for Traders Improve convenience with the reduced turnaround time for approval and compliance. 3. Tripura to host first-ever G20 summit of State commencing on April 3: Tripura will host the first-ever G20 summit of the State commencing on the 3rd of April 2023. 4. 2nd Tourism Working Group meeting begins in Siliguri: The second G20 Tourism Working Group (TWG) meeting will be held in West Bengal’s Siliguri and Darjeeling from 1-3 April 2023. This meeting will carry a message about the prospects and potential of the North Eastern part of India. The meeting is to be attended by more than 130 Delegates from the G20 Member Countries, Invitee Countries, and International Organizations along with Tourism Industry partners, State Tourism, and local tour operators. The main aim behind holding this meeting at Siliguri is to showcase the typical features of the area, tea ploughing to the foreign delegates as well as to expose the opportunities for adventure tourism and local art and culture.

 

5. India’s agricultural exports grow by 6.04% during April-Jan 2022-23: India’s agricultural exports rose 6.04 percent during April-January of the current financial year to worth USD 43.37 billion. During the same period last year, it was USD 40.90 billion. During the full financial year 2021-22, India’s agricultural exports touched the highest ever at USD 50.21 billion. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) engages in export promotion activities for agricultural and processed food products.

 

6. Ministry of Defence Rs 1700 crore deal with BrahMos Aerospace: Ministry of Defence has inked a Rs 1,700 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for procurement of next-generation maritime mobile coastal batteries and BrahMos missiles. These systems will be equipped with supersonic BrahMos missiles and will significantly enhance the multi-directional maritime strike capability of the Indian Navy. BAPL is a joint venture between India and Russia making crucial contribution to augment the new generation surface-to-surface missile with enhanced ranges. This contract is going to give further boost to the indigenous production of critical weapon systems and ammunition with active participation of indigenous industries. This project will generate employment of more than 90,000 man-days over a period of four years.

The delivery of these batteries is scheduled to commence from 2027.

NASA appoints Indian-origin Amit Kshatriya to head 'Moon To Mars' Programme: Amit Kshatriya, an Indian-American software and robotics engineer was appointed as the first head of NASA's Moon to Mars Programme, with immediate effect. The new office aims to carry out the agency’s human exploration activities on the Moon and Mars for the benefit of humanity. 4. 31 March – International Drug Checking Day: International Drug Checking Day is observed every year on 31 March. Objective – To promote harm reduction initiatives to reduce the risks associated with drug use and educate people about drugs and their effects. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 11.8 million deaths were linked to drug abuse in 2017, and more and more teenagers are falling prey to substance abuse. The International Day of Drug Checking is an effort to collectively reduce drug abuse and create a drug-free world.

1. Fino Payments Bank and Rajasthan Royals ties up for Digital Banking Partner: Fino Payments Bank has renewed its association with Rajasthan Royals (RR) for Season 16 of the Indian premier cricket competition, IPL. Fino Bank will be RR’s official digital banking partner. The bank made its maiden foray with the mega sporting event last season by partnering with RR as the digital payments partner. The newly launched FinoPay digital savings account is expected to get more traction through this engagement.

 

2. Govt hikes interest rates of small savings schemes: The Government has raised interest rates on post office saving schemes for the April-June 2023 quarter. The interest rate of the National Savings Certificate will now attract 7.7% up from 7%. The rate for Sukanya Samriddhi has increased to 8% from 7.6%. The interest rates for PPF and savings deposits have been retained at 7.1% and 4%. Senior citizen savings scheme: 8.2%. Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP): 7.5% KVP will now mature in 115 months as against 120 months earlier. 

 

3. GST revenue collection increases 13% to ₹1.60 lakh crore in March 2023: India’s GST revenue collection for March 2023 stood at 1.6 lakh crore rupees, which is 13% higher than the GST revenues in March 2022. It is for the fourth time, in the current financial year that the gross GST collection has crossed 1.5 lakh crore rupees, since the implementation of GST. Out of the total collection, CGST is 29,546 crore rupees, SGST is 37,314 crore rupees and IGST is 82,907 crore rupees. The gross revenues in 2022-23 were 22% higher than in 2021-22.

 

4. India Post Payments Bank launches WhatsApp Banking Services: India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) in collaboration with Airtel has launched WhatsApp Banking Services for IPPB customers in New Delhi. This channel will enable IPPB customers to seamlessly connect with the bank on WhatsApp and effortlessly avail of a host of banking services. It includes doorstep service requests, locating the nearest Post Office, and much more. Airtel has been working with IPPB to deliver as many as 250 million messages per month to the bank’s customers.

5. IMF approves 15.6 billion dollar support package for Ukraine: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a 15.6 billion US dollar support package for Ukraine to assist with the conflict-hit country’s economic recovery. The loan is part of a broader 115 billion US dollar international support package to help the country meet urgent funding needs. Of the total amount, 2.7 billion dollars is being made available to Ukraine immediately and the rest of the funds are due to be released over the next four years.

 

6. World Bank announces $100 million as loan Odisha: The Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank has approved a USD 100 million loan to Odisha. Purpose – To robust its early forecasting systems for improved response to disasters and enhance its social protection coverage for poor and vulnerable households through digital platforms. Odisha is vulnerable to natural disasters with cyclones hitting the state every 15 months on average.
