NATIONAL UPDATES:

1. DST sets up rapid response centre CAWACH to combat COVID-19: The Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, has approved setting up of a Centre for Augmenting WAR with COVID-19 Health Crisis (CAWACH), to support startups that address COVID-19 challenges. CAWACH will be set up at a total cost of Rs 56 Crore. The Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), a technology business incubator at IIT Bombay, supported by DST, has been identified as the Implementing Agency of the CAWACH.
The CAWACH programme of DST will scout, evaluate and support the innovations and start-ups that are in the area of novel, low cost, safe and effective ventilators, respiratory aids, protective gears, novel solutions for sanitizers, disinfectants, diagnostics, therapeutics, informatics and any effective interventions to control COVID-19. It will leverage the youthful energy, intelligence and extraordinary innovative potential of our technology incubators and startups and empower them for scale-up to speedily address the multi-dimensional challenges of COVID-19. Requisite financial assistance and fund deployment will be made available for innovations that are deployable in the market within next 6 months. They will be provided access to pan-India networks for testing, trial and market deployment of these products and solutions in the identified areas of priority COVID-19 solutions.

2. Uber will provide transportation service to public healthcare workers: The National Health Authority (NHA) has inked pact with ride hailing app “Uber” to provide transportation service to public healthcare workers who are involved in treatment of COVID-19 patients. Uber will initially facilitate the provision of 150 cars free of cost to support medical facilities in certain cities including New Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj and Patna through its UberMedic service.

3. Indian Railways’ Chittaranjan Locomotive creates world record of producing highest number of locos in FY’20: The Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) of Indian Railways’ has sets new world record of making the highest number of locomotives in the financial year 2019-20. The Asansol, West Bengal based CLW locomotive factory produced a total of 431 locomotives in the financial year 2019-20, to be recognized by Limca Book of Records as World Record. It surpassed its own record of manufacturing a number of 402 locomotives in the financial year 2018-19, which itself was a world record. The production of locomotives by CLW has witnessed a jump of 75 percent over the last six years from 250 locomotives in 2014-15 to 431 locomotives in 2019-20, under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

4. Government Extends Tenure of Acting President of NCLT, BSV Prakash Kumar, for 3 Months: The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has extended the tenure of BSV Prakash Kumar as the Acting President of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for another three months with effect from 5 April 2020, or till the joining of new President, whichever is earlier. Kumar was appointed as acting President for a period of three months on January 5 after the retirement of Justice MM Kumar as the NCLT President.

5. AICTE launches “MHRD AICTE COVID-19 Student Helpline Portal”: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched “MHRD AICTE COVID-19 Student Helpline Portal” to address the issues faced by students due to closure of colleges and hostels amid national lockdown due to COVID-19 outbreak. The portal has been developed within a day and will provide help students regarding the issue of Accommodation, Food, online Classes, Attendance, Examinations, Scholarships, Health, Transport, Harassment etc. The portal link is here: https://helpline.aicte-india.org

6. Online Hackathon “Hack the Crisis-India” launched: Online Hackathon “Hack the Crisis-India”, a part of a global initiative has been launched to find the working solutions to overcome the COVID 19 pandemic. The hackathon was launched by Minister of State Electronics & Information Technology, Communications and Human Resource Development, Sanjay Dhotre. The “Hack the Crisis-India” hackathon will be organised by ‘Hack A Cause-India’ and ‘Ficci Ladies Organization Pune’ along with the support of Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India (MEITY). Over 2000 teams and over 15000 participants will be participated in 48 hour hackathon with expert from India, Estonia and Finland.

7. Book Titled ‘Sridevi: The Eternal Screen Goddess’ Authored by Satyarth Nayak: Noted Indian author and screenwriter Satyarth Nayak has penned his first non-fiction book titled ‘Sridevi: The Eternal Screen Goddess’. The book reveals the journey of pan-Indian female superstar Sridevi, from child star to one of our greatest movie luminaries who forever changed the narrative of Indian cinema. The author is known for his bestselling debut novel The Emperor’s Riddles.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

1. ADB warns global cost of virus could top $4 trillion: The coronavirus pandemic could cost the global economy $4.1 trillion as it ravages United States, Europe and other major economies, the Asian Development Bank warned. The estimated impact is equivalent to nearly five percent of worldwide output based on a range of scenarios, but the lender said losses from “the worst pandemic in a century” could be higher. The Manila-based bank said a shorter containment period could pare the losses to $2 trillion.

2. International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action: 4 April: International Mine Awareness Day is commemorated every year on 4 April to spread awareness about the threat caused by landmines to the safety, health and lives of civilian populations and encourages state Governments to develop mine clearing programmes. “Mine action” refers to a range of efforts to clear landmines and explosive remnants of war and to mark and fence off dangerous areas. The theme for 2020 is “Advancing Protection, Peace and Development.”
Note: On 8 December 2005, the UN General Assembly declared 4 April to be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action every year and it was first observed in 2006.

1. ‘Smart Triplets’ Launched As Official Mascots of 19th Asian Games, Hangzhou: The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) digitally unveiled the official mascots, of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on 3rd April 2020. The official mascot comprise of three sporty robots named Congcong, Lianlian and Chenchen, collectively named as the ‘smart triplets’. Mascots: They represents the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Hangzhou in eastern China. The first mascot is yellow colored robot ‘Congcong’ which represents the archaeological ruins of Liangzhu city. The second mascot, Green ‘Lianlian’ represents the West Lake and the name signifies a lake full of lush lotus leaves. The third mascot is ‘Chenchen’, which represents the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, where Blue represents science and technology.
Asian Games 2020: The 19th Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China from September 10 to 25, 2022. It will be the third Asian Games to be hosted by China following Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.

2. FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup postponed: The FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup scheduled to be played in India in November (2nd to 21st) has been postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic by FIFA-Confederations working group. FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup has also been postponed which was about to be held in Panama and Costa Rica. Under-17 Women's World Cup was scheduled to be played in India across five host cities - Navi Mumbai, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Bhubaneswar.

BANKING AND FINANCE

1. Pravin Jadhav resigns as MD and CEO of Paytm Money: Paytm Money managing director and CEO Pravin Jadhav has resigned over rumoured differences with the company. Jadhav, who built Paytm’s wealth management arm into India’s leading mutual fund platform, reportedly quit over issues related to employee stock options (ESOPs) and remuneration.

2. After SBI, Govt nominates IOB for collecting donations for PM Cares Fund: Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), has been nominated by the government for the collection of funds of PM-Cares Fund. Till now only State Bank of India was the nominated bank for the same. PM Cares stands for Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-Cares Fund). The contributions can be made by ECS, RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, cheques and demand drafts drawn in favour of PM-Cares Fund. All such contributions will be entitled to 100 per cent income tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.

BUSINESS AND ECONOMY

1. IIM-B & ICICI Securities teams up to launch program for fintech startups: As a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, ICICI Securities (I-Sec) has partnered with IIM Bangalore’s startup hub N S Raghavan Centre of Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) to launch program for fintech startups having the duration of 15 months. The startups working in the fields of insurance, personal finance, banking, trading, wealth advisory, payments, lending and taxation can avail the benefits of the program.

2. ADB Estimates India’s GDP for FY’21 at 4 Percent; 6.2% for FY’22: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) released its latest Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2020 for financial year 2020-21 on 3rd April 2020. As per ADB, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in India is likely to slow down to 4 percent in FY21 (2020-21) on the back of the current global health emergency. However, ADB expects the Indian economy to further strengthen to 6.2 percent in the FY22 fiscal (2021-22).

OBITUARIES

1. Veteran Indian-origin virologist Gita Ramjee Passes Away: Gita Ramjee, a world-renowned Indian-origin South African virologist has passed away due to coronavirus complications. She was 63. She was a “Vaccine” scientist, an HIV prevention research leader and unit director of the Clinical Trial Unit of the HIV Prevention Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) in Durban. In 2018, she was awarded with the Outstanding Female Scientist Award in Lisbon for her lifetime commitment towards finding new HIV prevention methods.

NATIONAL UPDATES:

1. Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam Develops Oxygen Cylinder MOM for COVID-19 patients: The Personnel of the Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam (NDV), Andhra Pradesh has designed an innovative device called ‘Portable Multi-feed Oxygen Manifold’ (MOM). MOM is an oxygen cylinder that could be used to supply oxygen to six patients simultaneously, using a 6-way radial header fitted to a single cylinder. The device will enable critical care management to a larger number of Covid-19 patients with the existing limited resources. After successful trials, Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam has commenced manufacture of 10 portable MOM with two 6-way radial headers catering for 120 patients at makeshift locations. The preliminary trials were conducted at MI Room at NDV, followed by rapid trials at the Naval Hospital INHS Kalyani, where it was successfully installed within 30 minutes.

2. DRDO develops bio suit “Personal Protective Equipment”: A bio suit named as “Personal Protective Equipment” has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The bio suit has been fabricated by DRDO to keep the medical, paramedical and other personnel engaged in combating COVID-19 safe from the deadly virus. DRDO is seeking biosuits to serve as robust line of defence for the medics, paramedics and other personnel engaged in combating COVID-19. The current production capacity is 7,000 suits per day. The suit has been subjected to rigorous testing for textile parameters as well as protection against synthetic blood exceeding the criteria defined for body suits by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

3. Government Launches Mobile App ‘AarogyaSetu’ To Help People Track Spread Of Coronavirus: In an effort to contain the spread of coronavirus, the Ministry of Electronics and IT has launched a mobile app called ‘AarogyaSetu’ which will enable people in identifying the risk of their getting affected by the CoronaVirus infection. AarogyaSetu is a Sanskrit term which translates to ‘A bridge of health’. This app, developed in public-private partnership, is a coronavirus tracker based on mobile location. Once installed in a smartphone, the app detects other devices with AarogyaSetu installed that come in the proximity of that phone. Using your phone location data and Bluetooth to assess if you’ve been near a person who was infected by COVID-19, the app will calculate the risk, using cutting edge Bluetooth technology, algorithms and artificial intelligence. The app is available in 11 languages and has been launched on both Andriod and ioS.

4. ‘Watson Assistant for Citizens’ to address COVID-19 queries: IBM has introduced ‘Watson Assistant for Citizens’ in India free of cost to address COVID-19 queries. ‘Watson Assistant for Citizens’ is an Artificial Intelligence platform which provides reliable information on COVID-19 related queries. ‘Watson Assistant for Citizens’ unites Watson Assistant, Natural Language Processing as well as Artificial Intelligence (AI) search capabilities that helps in understanding and responding to common queries about COVID-19. IBM is already delivering this service across the US, as well as engaging with organisations globally in Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Italy, Poland, Spain and others. The initial solution is available in English and is being tailored to include Indian languages as well such as Hindi.

5. NCC offers its cadets to fight COVID-19 under ‘Ex NCC Yogdan’: National Cadet Corps (NCC) has offered its volunteer cadets for national duty to fight COVID-19 under ‘Exercise NCC Yogdan’. It has issued guidelines for temporary employment of its cadets to augment relief efforts and functioning of various agencies involved in battling the pandemic. Only Senior Division volunteer cadets above 18 years of age will be employed.

6. Domino’s Pizza launches ‘Domino’s Essentials’ service: Domino’s Pizza has partnered with ITC Foods to launch “Domino’s Essentials”. Through “Domino’s Essentials” service, everyday grocery essentials offered by ITC Foods will be delivered while leveraging the delivery infrastructure of Domino’s. This partnership aims to serve the community by ensuring uninterrupted supply of essential items at their doorsteps, without them having to step outside of their homes.

7. NTPC appoints Dilip Kumar Patel as director HR: National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Limited appointed Dilip Kumar Patel as its Director Human resources on 1 April. Patel has been the HR Head in various NTPC projects like NSPCL Bhilai, Sipat, and Tanda for around 12 years. He was also the Regional Head of HR in the Eastern Region-2 before he was appointed as the Director (HR).

8. Maharashtra Government launched COVID-19 self-assessment tool: Maharashtra Government in collaboration with Apollo 24X7 launched a COVID-19 self-assessment tool through which citizens can assess their symptoms from the comfort of their homes and later contact authorities if they have any doubts about their condition. 9. New features of e-NAM platform launched: Agriculture Minister launched new features of National Agriculture Market (e-NAM). It has introduced two modules: Warehouse based module to facilitate trade from e-NWR and FPO trade module to provide trade facility at their centre reducing their need to come to wholesale mandis for selling their harvested produce. Enhanced version of logistic module has been also released to help users to avail trackable transport facilities for transporting their produce.

10. NBT released questionnaires to evaluate COVID-19 Psycho-Social impact: NBT Study Group has released a set of Questionnaires in Hindi & English of seven segments to assess Psycho-Social Impact of COVID-19 and the Lockdown and How to Cope. The Public circulation of the Questionnaire is intended to create a conducive environment for community participation and sharing of emotions in the lockdown period. 1. World Bank Rolls out USD 160 billion emergency aid over 15 months to deal with global coronavirus pandemic: The Washington-based development lender World Bank has approved USD 160 billion in emergency aid over 15 months to help countries deal with the impact of the global coronavirus pandemic. In the first set of fast-track crisis funding, World Bank on 2nd April 2020, approved USD 1.9 billion for projects in 25 countries. The initiative will gradually move forward in another 40 nations in coming 15 months. The largest amount of assistance approved in first set was USD 1 billion for India. This was followed by USD 200 million for Pakistan, USD 129 million for Sri Lanka, USD 100 million for Afghanistan and USD 83 million for Ethiopia.

2. UK based 112-year-old Bob Weighton officially recognised as world’s oldest man by Guinness
The Guinness World Records has been officially confirmed Bob Weighton, from the United Kingdom, as the oldest person living (male) at 112 Years and 1 day as of 30 March 2020. Bob Weighton received the record title after Mr. Chitetsu Watanabe of Japan passed away on February 23rd 2020 at 112 years and 355 days.

1. Govt cuts interest rates on small savings schemes for Apr-Jun quarter of FY21: The government has cut the interest rates on select small savings schemes by 80-140 basis points (0.8-1.4 percentage point) for the first quarter of 2020-21 (April-June 2020). The new interest rate will be effective from April 1, 2020. Interest rates for small savings schemes are notified on a quarterly basis. Percentage change in Small Savings schemes interest rates is as given below:

2. RBI sets WMA for Central Government at Rs 1,20,000 crore for first half of FY21: The Reserve Bank of India has fixed the Ways and Means Advances (WMA) for Central Government for the first half of the financial year 2020-21 (April 2020 to September 2020) at Rs. 1,20,000 crore. The Reserve Bank may trigger fresh floatation of market loans when the Government of India utilizes 75% of the WMA limit. Apart from this, for State Government’s WMA, RBI has increased the WMA limit by 30 percent from the existing limit for all States/UTs. It must be noted that every state government has a different WMA limit.  The revised limits will come into force with effect from April 1, 2020 and will be valid till September 30, 2020.

OBITUARIES

1. Tony Lewis, one of the inventors of Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, passes away: Tony Lewis, one of the founding members behind the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method used in weather-affected limited overs cricket matches, has passed away. He was 78. The former England Captain and Welsh cricketer, Tony invented the method along with fellow mathematician Frank Duckworth. The Duckworth-Lewis method was introduced in 1997 and adopted officially by the ICC (International Cricket Council) in 1999. It was renamed as the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method in 2014. DLS method is a mathematical formula used to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a limited over’s cricket match interrupted by weather or other circumstances.

NATIONAL UPDATES:

1. World Bank offers $1bn to India for its Covid-19 emergency response and health systems preparedness project: The World Bank has announced to give USD 1 billion to the Indian government for a proposed India Covid-19 emergency response and health systems preparedness project. The project has been proposed by the GoI to respond and mitigate the Covid-19 threat and strengthen national systems for public health preparedness in India. This four-year project has been proposed by the government, after the assessment that outbreaks like Covid-19 will continue in the coming years, and hence there needs to be a long-term strategy to tackle the next wave of the disease. The World Bank funding is from its Covid-19 fast-track facility.

2. DARPG developed National Monitoring Dashboard: The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) has launched ‘National Monitoring Dashboard on COVID-19 Grievances’ which will receive and monitor all grievances related to COVID-19 on priority basis. The National Monitoring Dashboard was developed and implemented at https://darpg.gov.in where COVID-19 related grievances are monitored on priority basis by a technical team of DARPG on a daily basis to ensure timely implementation of COVID 19 Response Activities.

3. Naval Dockyard Mumbai developed low cost temperature sensor: Naval Dockyard, Mumbai has designed and developed its own handheld IR based temperature sensor with accuracy of 0.02 degree Celsius for undertaking screening of personnel at the yard’s entry gates. The non-contact thermometer has a Infrared sensor and an LED display integrated with a microcontroller which runs on a 9V battery. This will reduce the load on the security guard at the gate and will check for COVID-19. The instrument has been manufactured under Rs. 1000/.

4. Justice Rajnesh Oswal appointed as the permanent judge of J&K High Court: Justice Rajnesh Oswal was sworn in as the permanent Judge of the common High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh increasing the strength of judges to 9. He is the first Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court to take oath under the Indian Constitution. He was administered oath of office by Justice Gita Mittal in a simple but impressive ceremony in Jammu.

5. PIB sets up COVID19 Fact Check Unit: Press Information Bureau (PIB) has set up a portal ‘COVID 19 Fact Check Unit’ which will receive messages by email and send response on time. PIB will also release a daily Bulletin at 8 pm every day to inform regarding Government’s decisions and developments and progress on COVID 19. Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has set up a Technical Group of professionals from AIIMS to clarify doubts in the minds of the general public on any technical aspect of COVID 19.

6. ICCR announces art competition amid coronavirus: The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) with its focus on building cultural links with countries around the world through Cultural and Educational exchanges announces art competition. The theme of the competition is ‘Art in the Time of CORONA: United against Corona- Express through Art’. The event encourages professional and amateur artists to participate and present their emotions and innovative thoughts on COVID-19 pandemic, and the fight against the virus.

7. SCTIMST ties up with Wipro 3D to provide emergency ventilator system: Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) of DST tied up with Wipro 3D, Bengaluru to jointly build a prototype of an emergency ventilator system based on Artificial Manual Breathing Unit (AMBU). The ventilators can help meet urgent requirements arising out of the COVID-19 related crisis. AMBU bag or a bag-valve-mask (BVM) is a portable and lightweight hand-held device used to provide positive pressure ventilation to a patient.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

1. UN Cop26 Climate Change Summit in Glasgow Postponed until 2021: The 2020 United Nations Climate Change Conference (UN COP26), which was scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland from 9 to 20 November 2020 under the presidency of the UK government, has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Cop26 Climate Change Summit has now been pushed back to 2021 and the new dates for the conference would be decided in due course. This decision has been taken by the COP Bureau of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), with the UK and its Italian partners.

2. NASA Announces Mission SunRISE to Study Causes of Giant Solar Particle Storms: US space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has selected a new mission called the ‘Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment (SunRISE)’ to study how the Sun generates and releases giant space weather storms, known as solar particle storms, into planetary space. SunRise is an array of six CubeSats operating as one very large radio telescope. NASA has sanctioned USD 62.6 million to design, build and launch SunRISE. It will be launched after July 1, 2023. 3. India – China Completes 70 years of diplomatic ties on April 1, 2020: On April 1, 2020, India and China marked the 70th anniversary of the bilateral diplomatic ties between the two countries. It was on April 1, 1950, the Republic of India became the first non-Communist country in Asia to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC). To commemorate the special occasion, the two neighbors had planned to hold 70 programmes, 35 in each country, but the plans have been paused in the wake of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

4. World Autism Awareness Day: 2 April: The World Autism Awareness Day is observed internationally on 2 April every year, to raise awareness about people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) throughout the world. Theme 2020: “The Transition to Adulthood”. Autism is a lifelong, developmental disability that affects a person's communication and their experience with the world around them. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 18 December 2007. World Autism Day is one of only seven official health-specific UN Days.

1. World’s oldest tennis tournament, Wimbledon 2020, cancelled for first time since World War II: Due to the ever-increasing cases of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, the All England Club announced on 1 April 2020 that the premier tennis Grand Slam tournament Wimbledon 2020, has been cancelled. It marks the first time that the Wimbledon tournament had been called off since World War II. The tournament was due to be played between 29 June and 12 July in 2020. It will now be held from 28 June to 11 July in 2021. The cancellation of the tournament was announced by All England Club (AELTC) after an emergency meeting.
Note: Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass-court.

BANKING AND FINANCE

1. RBI Increases FPI limit in Corporate Bonds to 15% for FY21: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has hiked the limit for foreign portfolio investors’ (FPI) investment in corporate bonds from 9 percent to 15 percent of outstanding stock for FY2020-21. Currently, the FPIs can invest Rs 3.17 lakh crore in Indian corporate bonds. With the enhanced limit, they can hold Rs 4.29 lakh crore of corporate bonds for the half year ended September 2020, and Rs 5.41 lakh crore for the half year ending March 2021.
Besides this, the Reserve Bank has introduced a separate channel, called the ‘Fully Accessible Route’ (FAR), for non-residents to invest in specified Government of India dated securities. Eligible investors can invest in specified Government securities without being subject to any investment ceilings. All new issuance of government securities of 5-year, 10-year and 30-year tenors from the financial year 2020-21, will be eligible for investment under the FAR as ‘specified securities’. This scheme shall operate along with the two existing routes, the Medium Term Framework (MTF) and the Voluntary Retention Route (VRR). The directions shall come into effect from April 1, 2020.

2. L. Duraiswamy appointed as new MD of Sundaram Home Finance: Lakshminarayanan Duraiswamy has assumed the charge as new Managing Director of the Sundaram Home Finance. He has replaced Srinivas Acharya who was serving as the Managing Director of Sundaram Home Finance since 2010.

3. PhonePe launches coronavirus insurance policy ‘Corona Care’: PhonePe has launched a unique coronavirus hospitalization insurance policy named “Corona Care.” PhonePe has partnered with Bajaj Allianz General Insurance for this “Corona Care”. “Corona Care” plan is priced at Rs 156 with an insurance cover of Rs 50,000 for a person aged less than 55 years. PhonePe users can purchase their Coronavirus insurance policy under the “My Money” section on the PhonePe app. The policy has several benefits like it covers 30 days of expenses related to pre-hospitalization costs and post-care medical treatment.

1. RIL Overtakes TCS to re-gain the status of most valued firm: Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) surpassed Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) to once again become the most valued firm by market capitalisation on 31 March 2020. The market capitalisation (m-cap) of RIL was Rs 7,05,211.81 crore, which was Rs 21,133.32 crore more than that of Tata Consultancy Services’ Rs 6,84,078.49 crore valuation on the BSE. The m-cap figures of companies change daily with the movement in their stock prices.

OBITUARIES

1. Padma Shri Winner and Sikh Spiritual Singer, Nirmal Singh Passes Away: Bhai Nirmal Singh Khalsa, a noted singer of Sikh ‘Gurbani’ hymns, passed away in Amritsar, due to the novel coronavirus. He was 62. He was the former Hazoori Raagi at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Nirmal Singh Khalsa received the Padma Shri in 2009 for his contribution to Gurbani music. As per the data, it is the first death due to Covid-19 in Amritsar and the fifth death in the state.

2. Emmy award winning Singer Adam Schlesinger Passes Away: The Emmy award-winning American singer-songwriter Adam Schlesinger (52 years), best known for his work with US rock band ‘Fountains of Wayne’, has passed away after being diagnosed with coronavirus. He won three Emmys, a Grammy, and the ASCAP Pop Music Award, and was nominated for Oscar, Tony and Golden Globe Awards.

3. Nobel Prize Winner Phillip Anderson passes away: Philip Anderson (96 years), a Nobel Prize-winning physicist passes away. He expanded the world’s understanding of magnetism and superconductivity. During the Second World War, he was drafted to work at the US Naval Research Laboratory. He was awarded Nobel Prize for Physics in 1977 which he shared with van Vleck and Mott for their “fundamental theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems”.

1. Ministry of Tourism launches ‘Stranded in India’ portal: The Ministry of Tourism launched a portal ‘Stranded in India’ to extend support to the foreign tourists stuck in various parts of the country. The portal will disseminate information regarding the services that can be availed by foreign tourists who are stuck far away from their homeland.

2. Validity extension of expired Driving Licences and Vehicle Registration: In an advisory to all states and Union Territories, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has extended the validity of documents that expired since 1st February 2020. The validity of these documents has been extended till 30th June 2020. The documents include fitness, driving licence, permits (all types), registration or any other concerned document under the Motor Vehicle Rules.

3. Utkal Divas or Odisha Day is celebrated on 1 April: Utkal Divas (Odisha Day) is celebrated every year on 1st April all over Odisha. It is celebrated to commemorate the sacrifices made by leaders for the formation of Odisha as a separate State when it was carved out of the combined Bengal-Bihar-Orissa province. After losing its complete political identity in 1568 due to the defeat-death of Mukunda Dev the last Hindu king, led to the formation of a separate state under British rule based on the language on 1 April 1936. This year marks the 83rd Utkal Divas or the foundation day of Odisha.

Karnataka Government Launches ‘Corona Watch’ App to Track Movement History of Corona Positive Patients: The State government Karnataka has launched a mobile application named “Corona Watch” for people to track the movement history of patients, who tested positive, before their detection so that they can take precautions. The quarantined persons have to declare their location every day during the 14-day period failing which the person will be send to government quarantine institution. The app will give the date and time of visit to spots by the patients. The app also has a list of government designated first response hospitals for COVID-19 where citizen with symptoms can go.

5. IIT Kanpur to develop COVID-19 portable ventilator: Amidst the rising cases of COVID-19 in the country, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kanpur is developing portable ventilators which will be significantly cheaper than the ones available in the market. The prototype of this ventilator will be ready very soon and just after assembling, it can be used as a life support system. The ventilator is very important medical equipment for COVID-19 Patients, especially those who are old and the virus can prove fatal to them. Bio Science and Bio Engineering department of IIT Kanpur has prepared a design of live saver portable ventilator.

6. “Active Case Finding Campaign” begins in Himachal Pradesh: Himachal Pradesh government has started “Active Case Finding Campaign” in the state. The campaign has been rolled out in the state to provide information about the symptoms of COVID-19 to the people at their doorsteps.

7. GoI introduced dedicated Twitter handle for COVID-19 updates: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has launched a dedicated Twitter handle for COVID-19 updates. This dedicated twitter handle has been set up to share news and updates about the novel coronavirus. The account is named as #IndiaFightsCorona and it uses the handle @CovidnewsbyMIB. The twitter handle would be responsible for sharing authentic information and all updates on Novel Coronavirus. In its first tweet, the dedicated twitter handle has shared the helpline numbers for information on the COVID-19 pandemic.

8. GoI extended foreign trade policy to March 2021: The Government extended the existing foreign trade policy (2015-20) for 1 year till March 2021 amid COVID-19 and the lockdown to contain the virus spread. Validity of DFIA and EPCG authorizations for import purposes has also been extended. Advance authorization is issued to allow duty free import of inputs, which is physically incorporated in export product. Exports during April-February dipped by 1.5% to 292.91 billion dollars and imports declined by 7.3%.

1. NATO Secretary General Appoints ‘Reflection Group’ to study the alliance’s political direction: The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has announced the appointment of a group of experts on 31 March 2020 to support his work in a reflection process to further strengthen NATO’s political dimension. The group of five men and five women will be co-chaired by former German defence minister Thomas de Maziere and Washington’s former top diplomat for Europe, Wess Mitchell and will report to the Secretary General. The panel will offer recommendations to reinforce alliance unity, increase political consultation and coordination between allies, and strengthen NATO’s political role. The following people have been appointed to the group: Greta Bossenmaier (Canada), Anja Dalgaard-Nielsen (Denmark), Hubert Védrine (France), Thomas de Maizière (Germany), Marta Dassù (Italy), Herna Verhagen (The Netherlands), Anna Fotyga (Poland), Tacan Ildem (Turkey), John Bew (United Kingdom) and Wess Mitchell (United States).

2. IMF declares that World is now in “Recession”: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced that the world has clearly entered a recession due to the coronavirus pandemic. It has emphasized that the current recession is even worse than that of 2009. The statements about the world economy were made after the meeting of governing body of the IMF, the International Monetary and Financial Committee.

1. 2021 World Athletics Championships Being Moved to 2022: The World Athletics has informed that the 2021 world athletics championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States, is now being shifted to 2022 to accommodate the re-arranged Tokyo Olympics. The 2020 Tokyo Games has been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic and will now take place on July 23-August 8, 2021. The world athletics championships was earlier scheduled to take place in Eugene on August 6-15, 2021. It will now take place in August 2022.

ICICI Lombard, BharatPe launch COVID-19 insurance cover for shopkeepers: BharatPe has partnered with ICICI Lombard to roll out 'COVID-19 Protection Insurance Cover' for shopkeepers of the age group-18 to 65 years. On diagnosis of COVID-19 (positive), 100% of the sum will be given, irrespective of hospital expenses with a premium starting at Rs 199. It will also provide value-added benefits such as health assistance and CHAT/ virtual assistance, teleconsultation and ambulance assistance.

2. Public sector banks announce deferment of EMI payments on loans: Public sector banks have announced suspension of EMI payments on loans to customers for three months in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. RBI has already allowed 3-month moratorium on loan payments. Banks like State Bank of India, Punjab and Sind Bank, Canara Bank, UCO Bank, Syndicate Bank and Bank of Baroda have announced the offer of the moratorium already to customers via tweets.

3. S&P Further Slashes India’s GDP Forecast to 3.5% from 5.2% for FY21: S&P Global Ratings has further slashed India’s growth forecast to 3.5% from a previous downgrade to 5.2% for the fiscal year 2020-21. The latest downgrade is due to the slump in demand, because of the Covid-19 outbreak, which is leading to declining credit quality and rising defaults particularly among non financial corporates with weaker credit profiles. For the Financial year 2019-20, the rating agency has estimated growth forecast of 5%. However the S&P expects the Indian economy to bounce back to 7.3% in FY22.

4. Fitch Solutions Predicts India GDP growth forecast at 4.6% for FY21: Fitch Solutions has predicted India’s GDP growth rate for 2020-21 (FY21) at 4.6%. This is less than its earlier prediction of 5.4%. For FY20, Fitch Solutions has predicted India’s GDP Growth rate at 4.9%.

1. Princess of Spain Maria Teresa Passes Away Due to COVID-19: Spanish Princess Maria Teresa has become the first royal to pass away due to COVID-19. She was born on July 28, 1933, and studied in France and became a professor at Paris’ Sorbonne as well as a professor of Sociology at Madrid’s Complutense University. She was known for her outspoken views and activist work, which led to her nickname the “Red Princess.”. The Princess was the cousin of King of Spain Felipe VI.

2. Legendary NCERT Historian Arjun Dev Passes Away: Professor Arjun Dev, the legendary educationist and historian, has passed away. He was 81. Prof. Arjun had worked as a historian at the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). He has written a number of extremely popular textbooks for the NCERT on Modern and Contemporary India and the World.
