INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:
1. Draft SHANTI Rules 2026 on Nuclear Liability: The Department of Atomic Energy issued the draft Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy (SHANTI) Rules, 2026 on 14 August 2026. The draft rules replace several older civil nuclear and radiation protection frameworks and set out liability, insurance, and financial security requirements for nuclear installation operators in India. The draft rules require a nuclear installation operator to maintain an insurance policy, financial security, or both, for civil nuclear damage. The operator’s liability for nuclear damage is strict and follows a no-fault liability principle, including damage arising during transport of nuclear material. The no-fault liability model is a legal framework in which compensation can be claimed without proving negligence. Civil nuclear liability rules in India are linked to operator responsibility, financial security, and compensation mechanisms for nuclear damage.
2. Key Terms Related to Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Reactor Operations: The nuclear fuel cycle covers the preparation, use, and disposal of nuclear fuel, along with the key reactor components and safety terms used in operation. The front-end of the nuclear fuel cycle includes all the preparation steps required to produce usable fuel for a reactor. These processes transform natural uranium ore into fuel assemblies ready for electricity generation. A nuclear reactor core is the central region where nuclear fission occurs. Specific materials and engineering components manage the fission process to produce heat safely.
3. Regulation of Zoos and Captive Wildlife in India: India regulates zoos and captive wildlife through a legal and institutional framework aimed at animal welfare, conservation breeding, and prevention of illegal trade. The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) are central to this system. The Recognition of Zoo Rules, 2009 classifies zoos into four categories based on area, number of species, endangered species, and annual visitor footfall. The amendment aligns Indian law with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). It provides for a Management Authority to issue permits and a Scientific Authority to assess biological impact.
4. Important Immersive Display Technologies and Formats: Immersive display systems create virtual environments or overlay digital content on the real world. They are the foundation of VR, AR, MR, and XR, and depend on microdisplays, optics, and software standards for realistic visual experiences. This technique reduces computational workload by rendering images at lower resolution outside the user’s central gaze. The user views the physical world directly through transparent lenses, with digital elements projected onto the glass. It preserves natural peripheral vision but struggles in bright ambient light. Opaque displays block the real world while external cameras capture the environment and merge it with digital content in real time. It offers full pixel control but introduces camera latency.
5. NTPC Simhadri to Host Iron-Air Battery Pilot: An indigenous iron-air battery system will undergo a utility-scale pilot evaluation at NTPC’s Simhadri Thermal Power Station in Andhra Pradesh. The project involves Chennai-based deep-tech startup Meine Electric and the Atal Incubation Centre–Anna University, with the trial focused on Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES). Iron-air batteries are electrochemical storage systems that use iron, air, and water as the main materials. The technology belongs to the broader class of long-duration batteries designed to store electricity for extended periods and release it over many hours. Meine Electric’s proprietary Fast Charge Long Discharge (FCLD) system uses a six-hour charging cycle and an 18-hour discharging cycle. The system is designed for utility-scale applications where grid storage requires long discharge durations and repeated operational cycles.
6. Major Space Recovery and Booster Landing Technologies: The modern space sector is moving from expendable rockets to reusable recovery systems. Booster reuse lowers launch cost, improves sustainability, and shapes the design of today’s orbital launch vehicles. Traditionally, rocket boosters burned their propellant, separated from the upper stage, and fell into the ocean as debris. Today, space agencies and private companies focus on recovering and reusing boosters to preserve expensive hardware such as engines and avionics. Vertical Takeoff, Vertical Landing (VTVL) is a widely used method for recovering orbital-class liquid rocket boosters. In this system, the first-stage booster guides itself back to Earth and lands upright. Drone ships are modified ocean barges equipped with thrusters for station-keeping. They remain stable in rough seas. Once a booster lands on an ASDS, robotic systems such as the Octagrabber crawl under the rocket’s engine section and secure it to the deck to prevent tipping during the return journey to port.
7. Emerging Battery Technologies for Clean Energy: The next phase of clean energy storage is moving beyond conventional lithium-ion batteries toward chemistries that are safer, cheaper, and better suited for grid-scale and long-duration applications. The global push for decarbonization requires battery technologies that go beyond traditional lithium-ion systems. Standard lithium-ion batteries rely on materials like cobalt and nickel, which face supply constraints, high costs, and environmental issues during mining. Additionally, current liquid-electrolyte batteries present safety risks due to flammability. Emerging battery chemistries target these vulnerabilities by utilizing abundant materials, improving safety profiles, and increasing energy capacities. These innovations support utility-scale grid storage, electric vehicles, and specialized electronics.
