postal circles, and one Army Post Office. India’s post offices use a 6-digit
PIN Code system that was implemented there in 1972.
4. Paradip
Port Sets Single-Day Coal Loading Record: The Mechanised Coal Handling Plant (MCHP) of the
Paradip Port Authority (PPA) loaded 1,40,022 metric tonnes of coal on 10
October 2026. The coal was loaded onto two vessels, M.V. APJ Indrani and M.V.
Ripley Pinnacle. This was the plant’s highest-ever single-day loading total.
The new record exceeded the previous single-day benchmark of 1,37,500 metric
tonnes, set on 29 May 2022, by 2,522 metric tonnes. A metric tonne, also called
a tonne, is equal to 1,000 kilograms. The record total represents the combined
coal cargo loaded onto the two vessels during the day. On 11 October 2026, PPA
Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit, an officer of the Indian Railway Service of
Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), congratulated MCHP workers, officers and
personnel. The loading operation took place at the port’s mechanised
coal-handling facility.
5. Ambaji
Mohanthal Prasad Receives GI Tag: Ambaji Mohanthal Prasad, the traditional sweet
offering at Ambaji Temple in Gujarat, received a Geographical Indication (GI)
tag on 8 October 2026. The application was submitted on 1 October 2026 by the

October 2026, the first day of the Sharadiya Navratri festival. A GI identifies
goods as originating in a particular territory, region or locality, where a
quality, reputation or other characteristic is linked to that geographical
origin. In India, GIs are registered under the Geographical Indications of
Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The GI Registry operates under
the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks. The Act covers
agricultural, natural and manufactured goods. A registered GI is protected for
10 years and can be renewed for further periods of 10 years. Registration gives
authorised users the right to use the GI for the registered goods and provides
legal protection against unauthorised use.

4. Copernicus
Records Second-Warmest September Globally: September 2026 was the second-warmest September in the
global ERA5 record, with an average surface air temperature of 16.27°C. This
was 0.82°C above the 1991–2020 average and 1.63°C above the estimated 1850–1900
pre-industrial average. The data are compiled by the Copernicus Climate Change
Service (C3S), implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather
Forecasts. ERA5 is a global atmospheric reanalysis dataset produced by the
European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. September 2026 was 0.11°C
cooler than September 2023, the warmest September in the dataset. A monthly
global temperature above 1.5°C relative to the pre-industrial baseline is
distinct from the Paris Agreement’s long-term temperature goal, which concerns
sustained warming over a longer period.
5. World
Bank Considers $100 Billion Crisis Financing: On 11 October 2026, World Bank President Ajay Banga said the
institution was discussing potential emergency financial assistance with 30 to
40 countries. The World
Bank could mobilise up to 100
billion in crisis financing if global economic conditions worsen. This would
exceed the 70 billion disbursed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The World Bank
initially made 25 billion in crisis financing available after the Middle East
conflict began in late February 2026. Countries could potentially access
between 50 billion and 60 billion through this financing and the reallocation
of about 35 billion from existing, approved World Bank projects. The proposed
total of up to $100 billion remains a potential mobilisation figure, rather
than an amount already disbursed. The financing is intended to address economic
pressures facing developing countries, including rising energy and fertilizer
prices, high borrowing costs and climate risks. A potential strong El NiƱo
weather phenomenon is among the climate-related risks cited.
6. Samsung
Affiliates Plan $9.15 Billion Semiconductor Investment: Samsung affiliates plan
to invest a combined 12.26 trillion won (9.15 billion) in semiconductor
operations in Vietnam and South Korea. About 8 trillion won (5.99 billion) is
earmarked for Vietnam, while South Korea is to receive investment in high-end
production capacity. The plans include memory-chip testing facilities and
expanded flip-chip ball grid array substrate capacity. Samsung Electronics
plans to invest 105.79 trillion Vietnamese dong ($4.09 billion) in memory-chip
testing facilities at Yen Binh Industrial Park in Thai Nguyen, northern Vietnam.
The first production line is scheduled to start operations in the fourth
quarter of 2027, with a second line planned for 2028. The facilities will
conduct final testing of DRAM and NAND flash chips packaged at Samsung’s
Cheonan plant in South Korea. The investment expands overseas testing capacity;
it does not include wafer manufacturing. Around 66.64 trillion dong ($2.58
billion), or 63 per cent of the Vietnamese facilities’ planned investment, is
expected to come from reinvested profits generated by Samsung’s local
operations.
7. Pakistan
Imposes Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Pakistan’s President Asif
Ali Zardari declared an emergency and imposed governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 11 October 2026. The provincial
government led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was suspended after a
federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The federal
government cited worsening law and order, terrorist attacks and a breakdown of
constitutional machinery as grounds for the action. Article 232 of the
Constitution of Pakistan concerns the proclamation of an emergency, including
situations involving war, external aggression or internal disturbance beyond a
provincial government’s capacity to control. Article 234 applies when the President is satisfied
that a province cannot be governed in accordance with the Constitution. Under Article 234, the President may assume provincial
government functions and provide for the exercise of provincial assembly powers
by or under Parliament’s authority.

Targets 604 Million Tonnes of Steel Capacity by 2047: The Ministry of Steel has
released a draft National Steel Policy Vision 2047, which proposes raising
India’s crude steel capacity to 604 million tonnes per year by 2047. India’s
installed steel capacity was approximately 220–222 million tonnes per year in
October 2026. The draft projects finished steel consumption of 505 million
tonnes and per-capita steel consumption of 302 kg by 2047. In 2025–26, finished
steel consumption was 164 million tonnes and per-capita consumption was 116 kg.
The draft also sets a crude steel capacity target of 294 million tonnes by
2030, compared with 300 million tonnes by 2030–31 under the National Steel
Policy 2017. Crude steel is the primary product obtained from steelmaking,
while finished steel includes products processed for use in construction,
