Daily GK Update- 9th May, 2022

 

NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. SC appointed panel for the recovery of money from NSEL defaulters: The Supreme Court of India formed a high-level committee, headed by retired Bombay High Court Judge Pradeep Nandrajog, for recovery of money from the defaulters against whom the National Spot Exchange (NSEL) has secured money decrees. NSEL has already secured decrees and arbitration awards of Rs 3,534 crores against the defaulters. Further, defaulters’ liabilities of Rs 760 crores have already been crystallised by the committee appointed by the Bombay High Court.

Proceedings for a decree against NK Protein worth Rs 964 crores is pending before the Bombay High Court. In 2013, investors and traders in NSEL lost about Rs 5,600 crores after the exchange shut trading abruptly leading to a series of defaults. Two of the defaulters have already paid their liabilities worth Rs 196 crores. The claims will be verified by the Supreme Court-appointed committee. The Supreme Court-appointed committee will oversee the sale of assets, attached by the Maharashtra government under the MPID Act and Enforcement Directorate across India.

 

2. Prime Minister Modi addresses the JITO Connect 2022 launching session: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi used video conferencing to address the opening session of the Jain International Trade Organisation’s JITO Connect 2022. In his remarks, the Prime Minister referred to the spirit of Sabka Prayas in the topic of the programme, saying that the world is looking at India’s development resolutions as a method of attaining its objectives. Whether it’s for global peace, worldwide wealth, solutions to global difficulties, or the development of the global supply chain, the world looks to India with hope.

About EARTH: The Prime Minister exhorted everyone in attendance to work for EARTH.

a)      E stands for environmental prosperity. PM also encouraged them to talk on how they can help build at least 75 Amrit Sarovars in each district by August 15 of next year.

b)      A stands for increasing investment in natural farming, farming technology, and the food processing sector in order to make agriculture more profitable.

c)       Working for Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle, the letter R stands for Recycling and the circular economy.

d)      The letter T stands for bringing technology to as many people as possible. PM challenged the audience to examine how other advanced technology, such as drone technology, may be made more accessible.

e)      H stands for healthcare, and that the government is now working hard to improve healthcare and medical colleges in every area across the country.

3. ‘Enterprise India National Coir Conclave 2022’ inaugurated by MSME Minister Narayan Rane: The ‘Enterprise India National Coir Conclave 2022’ was inaugurated at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, by Union Minister for MSME Shri Narayan Rane and Minister of State for MSME Shri Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma, as well as several State Ministers and top officials. The coir sector employs more than 7 lakh people in rural parts of coconut-growing states. Even more intriguing, 80 percent of these artists are women, although output has so far been limited to the country’s southern coconut-producing States/UTs. Key Points:

a)      The Ministry of MSME plans to expand coir production in other states around the country, and that the government has taken several measures to popularise the use of coir for consumer and industrial purposes, particularly as a substitute for many non-degradable materials.

b)      Coir industry awards were presented to 44 coir and coir products manufacturing/exporting entities at this event.

c)       Coir Board also unveiled new coir products such as a coir composite fruit bowl, a geo-textile shadow lamp, coir buttons, coir auto mirror covers, a flat rectangular tray, and a certificate holder, as well as the publication of the Manual of Coir Technologies, Books on Coir Pith, Geo-textiles, and Coir Floor Furnishing.

d)      A ‘Run for Coir’ will be held to promote the usage of coir as a natural, biodegradable, and environmentally beneficial commodity. Thousands of people are anticipated to attend, including dignitaries, college students, and the general public.

 

4. India logs 6.2 percent increase in death rate as per CRS during 2020: The Civil Registration System (CRS) report 2020, based on birth and death reports, has been released by the central government. According to the data, the number of registered births declined from 2.48 crore in 2019 to 2.42 crore in 2020, representing a 2.40 percent decrease. According to the Vital Statistics of India based on the Civil Registration System’s report for 2020, the number of registered deaths increased by 6.2 percent from 76.4 lakh in 2019 to 81.2 lakh in 2020.

Key Points:

a)      Males account for 60.2 percent of all registered deaths, while females account for 39.8 percent.

b)      Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, and Haryana are among the states and union territories that have contributed considerably to the increase in deaths from 2019 to 2020.

c)       The number of births and deaths included in the study are factual figures collected from roughly 3 lakh registration units across the country, according to NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr. V K Paul.

d)      CRS is a system for recording births, deaths, and stillbirths that is universal, continuous, mandatory, and permanent.

e)      COVID-19 and other causes of death are included in these numbers.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Nepal’s Kami Rita Sherpa climbs Mount Everest for 26th time: Nepal’s legendary climber Kami Rita Sherpa has climbed Mt Everest, the tallest peak in the world for the 26th time to set a new world record. Leading an 11-member rope fixing team, Kami Rita & his team reached the summit, breaking his own previous world record. The climbing route used by Kami Rita was pioneered by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal’s sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953 and remains the most popular.

Everest has been climbed 10,657 times since it was first scaled in 1953 from Nepali and Tibetan sides – many have climbed multiple times, and 311 people have died so far, according to the Himalayan Database. The 52-year-old followed in his father’s footsteps and became a mountain guide, first summiting the peak in 1994. He has climbed Everest almost every year since.

 

2. Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War: 8th-9th May: Every year during May 8-9, the United Nations marks the Time of Remembrance and reconciliation for those who lost their lives during the Second World War. The day pays tribute to all the victims of the Second World War. This year is the 77th Anniversary of World War II.

On 2 March 2010, by resolution 64/257, the General Assembly invited all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, non-governmental organizations and individuals to observe 8-9 May in an appropriate manner to pay tribute to all victims of the Second World War. A special solemn meeting of the General Assembly in commemoration of all victims of the war was held in the second week of May 2010, marking the sixty-fifth anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh wins Sunway Formentera Open chess tournament: Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh has emerged as champion in the 1st Chessable Sunway Formentera Open 2022 chess tournament in Punta Prima. It was a hat-trick of titles for him after he had previously won the La Roda tournament and the Menorca Open in recent weeks. The 15-year old Gukesh (Elo 2637) settled for a draw with Armenian GM Haik M Martirosyan in the final round to win the title with eight points. He had defeated compatriot and second-seed K Sasikiran in the ninth and penultimate round. He has now moved up to no.64 in the world rankings.

1. Indian Bank Launched Digital Broking Solution ‘E-Broking’: Indian Bank, a public sector bank, has introduced its digital broking solution – ‘E- Broking’, as a strategic move toward comprehensive digitalisation of its customer products. E-Broking, an instant and paperless demat & trading account opening service, is now available through the bank’s mobile banking app, IndOASIS. The product was introduced in collaboration with Fisdom, the bank’s financial technology partner. Highlights:

a)      The E-Broking initiative will assist the bank in increasing its CASA (Current Account Savings Account).

b)      This initiative also enables the customers to invest in the ongoing Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) Initial Public Offering (IPO) effectively.

c)       IndOASIS, the bank’s mobile banking app, would provide users with a unified experience ranging from Demat and trading account opening to reduced broking services backed by research-based investment in the secondary market, starting with equity, futures, options, and initial public offerings on a single platform.

1. Adani Wilmar became India’s largest FMCG company surpassing HUL: Adani Wilmar Limited became the largest Fast Moving Consumer Goods Company (FMCG) in India beating Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), after the announcement of its Quarter Four results for the financial year 2022 (Q4FY2022). AWL has reported total operating revenue of Rs 54,214 crore in the Financial Year 2022 whereas HUL reported a revenue of Rs 51,468 crore in the Financial Year (FY) 2021-22. In Q4FY22 (January-March 2022), the AWL has seen a 40 per cent jump in revenue from operations to Rs 14,960 despite a 26 per cent i.e., Rs 234.29 crore hit in net profit in the same period.

2. Mindtree, L&T Infotech announce merger to create India’s 5th largest IT services: L&T Infotech and Mindtree, the two independently listed IT services companies under Larsen & Toubro Group announced a merger that would create India’s fifth-largest IT services provider. The combined entity will be known as “LTIMindtree”.

The Boards of Directors of Mindtree and L&T Infotech (LTI) at their respective meetings held on Friday approved a composite scheme of amalgamation of both these independently listed IT services companies under the Larsen & Toubro Group. The proposed integration will see Mindtree and LTI join strengths to create an efficient and scaled up IT services provider exceeding USD 3.5 billion. These opportunities will create a more distinctive employee value proposition and stronger partnerships with ecosystem players.

1. Indian Navy’s P-8i Fleet host to Boeing and Air Works collaboration: Air Works, an Indian maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) company, is partnering with the Boeing Company to conduct heavy maintenance checks on three Indian Navy P-8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft at Air Works, Hosur, demonstrating the success of the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) campaign.

This significantly expands the scope and size of MRO in India, demonstrating both firms’ commitment to helping India achieve Aatmanirbhar status in aerospace and defence. The partnership between Boeing and Air Works has resulted in quicker turnaround times and increased operating capability for important defence platforms in India. The relationship began with checks on the P-8I Poseidon aircraft and has since expanded to include checks and MRO on the Indian Air Force’s Boeing 737 VVIP aircraft’s landing gear.

NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. India embarks on the ‘World’s Largest’ Film Restoration Project: Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur said that an amount of Rs 363 crore has been allotted for the world’s largest film restoration project under the National Film Heritage Mission. The mission was launched in 2016 with an outlay of 597 crore rupees. It aims at preserving, restoring and digitizing the cinematic heritage.

The Minister informed that the process of restoring over 5900 short films, documentaries and features is underway. He said this exercise carried out by the National Film Archive of India proves to be one of the world’s biggest restoration, conservation, preservation and digitization process undertaken. The Minister also held a meeting to review the functioning of the Film and Television Institute of India, FTII and deliberated on the vision of taking FTII to international standards of excellence. Mr Thakur said FTII should nurture entrepreneurial skills and equip students to launch startups in film and television productions.

 

2. NCRTC to receive India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System train set at Salvi: At Alstom’s Savli project in Gujarat, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) will receive India’s first semi-high-speed train set for Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). Manoj Joshi, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, will be present at the occasion.

Key Points:

a)      The RRTS train sets are produced under the Make in India initiative and can reach a top speed of 180 kilometres per hour. The train will be transported to Duhai Depot in Uttar Pradesh, where it will be repaired and operated.

b)      Cushioned seating, laptop-mobile charging, luggage racks, and a dynamic route-map are among the modern commuter-centric features of the completely air-conditioned train.

c)       The NCRTC is in charge of putting India’s first RRTS corridor between Delhi and Meerut into action. The 82-kilometer-long route is now under construction.

d)      The 17-kilometer priority segment between Sahibabad and Duhai is expected to be operational by 2023, with the entire corridor completed by 2025.

 

3. Haryana launched ‘Vehicle Movement Tracking System’ mobile app: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has launched a Vehicle Movement Tracking System (VMTS) mobile app to track the vehicles carrying sand and other mining material. The app will be used at different checkpoints in all the districts of Haryana. All vehicle details including vehicle type, vehicle number, moving from, moving to, and driver details will be stored in it. The non-registered individual will not be permitted to enter the zone of sand mining. This App has been designed and developed in-house by National Informatics Centre, Haryana.

About the app: The app will be used at different checkpoints in all the districts of Haryana and vehicle details —like vehicle number, vehicle type, moving from, moving to — along with driver details, like name, driver mobile number and driver license number will be punched into it. If the vehicle is to move between source and destination checkpoints, then officials can mark the vehicle exit from the originating check post as an interim exit and at the destination checkpoint it will be marked as a final exit.

 

4. UP villages to get free high-speed internet connectivity: Uttar Pradesh government will provide free wi-fi facilities at more than 58 thousand places in the villages of the state. This internet facility will be available for the people within 50 meters of the Gram Sachivalaya (village secretariat) building which is being built in every Gram Panchayat of the state.

In order to make every village a smart village, high-speed internet connectivity will be provided to the village secretariats and a free high-speed Wi-Fi internet facility will be provided to the villagers within a radius of 50 meters of the village secretariat building. The process of establishment of village secretariats in 58,189-gram panchayats of the state is going on continuously. The government informed that the Gram Panchayat office was being established in the name of ‘Gram Sachivalaya’. Arrangements are also being made to ensure that all the documents/records/documents required by the villagers can be obtained through Panchayat Assistant/Common Service Center (CSC) in the village secretariat.

5. Ministry of Skill Development signs MoU with ISRO to begin its Training Program: The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) signs an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Indian Space Research Organisation with the goal of upskilling the technical workforce at the Department of Space of ISRO. Shri Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary MSDE, and Shri S. Somanath, Secretary Department of Space/ Chairman ISRO, signed the MoU.

Key Points:

a)      The initiative aims to establish a formal framework for short-term courses to provide training for the skill development and capacity building of ISRO technical professionals in the space domain in the country, in accordance with industry requirements. Over the next five years, more than 4000 ISRO technical professionals will be taught in the programme.

b)      The training will take place at MSDE’s National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) throughout India.

c)       The training program’s goal is to improve the abilities of diverse technical professionals in ISRO centres and units under the Department of Space (DOS).

d)      The programme will provide training in certain disciplines to enhance employees’ skill sets in accordance with the latest industry trends and requirements, with the support of MSDE and its state-of-the-art training institutes around the country.

e)      Under the terms of the MoU, ISRO will collaborate with MSDE and the accompanying NSTI to develop a thorough training calendar, curriculum, and syllabus to meet the program’s larger goals. The trainees will receive trainee kits from ISRO.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. India stays out of global declaration on future on Internet: India is not among the 60 countries that have signed a global declaration to keep the Internet open, free, and neutral. The countries that have signed the declaration include the US, European Union, United Kingdom, Canada and France. Called the ‘Declaration for the Future of the Internet’, the document is an agreement to prevent digital authoritarianism. Countries including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cabo Verde, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Estonia, the European Commission and Finland are among the signatories. India, China and Russia are among the large nations that are not part of this declaration.

 

2. World Red Cross Day: 8th May: World Red Cross Day is observed globally on 8th May every year. The day aims to broaden the public’s understanding of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Red Crescent Societies are affiliated and work in cooperation with the World Red Cross to assist in the activities of the movement. National Red Crescent societies and Red Cross Societies are found in almost every nation worldwide. The theme of World Red Cross Day 2022 is #BeHUMANKIND (Believe in the power of Kindness).

History of the World Red Cross Day: Henry Dunant was born on 8th May, 1828 and also was the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. World Red Cross Day is also known as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. In 1863, Henry Dunant established the Red Cross Committee International in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1934, the principles of the Red Cross Truce were presented at the 15th International Conference. It was approved at the same conference. World Red Cross Day is annually celebrated on May 8, 1948. In 1984 it was named as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.

3. World Thalassemia Day: 8th May: World Thalassemia Day is celebrated on May 8 every year to commemorate Thalassemia victims and to encourage those who struggle to live with the disease. Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that doesn’t let the body to create enough haemoglobin. The disease weakens and destroys the blood cells. There are two types of thalassemia, alpha and beta, along with Thalassemia minor, intermedia and major as its subcategories. The theme for this year’s World Thalassemia day is ‘Be Aware.Share.Care: Working with the global community as one to improve thalassemia knowledge.’

History of the World Thalassemia Day: In the year 1994, Thalassemia International Federation (TIF) announced May 8 as International Thalassemia Day. And it was on this day the president and the founder of TIF, Panos Englezos, created this day in the loving memory of his son George and the other thalassemia patients who fought this disease.

1. Asian Games 2022 in China postponed to 2023: The Asian Games 2022, due to be held in Hangzhou, China in September, has been postponed to 2023 due to rising COVID-19 cases in the country, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced. The Olympic Council of Asia, the governing body for the Asian Games, said it will announce the new dates for the 19th edition of the Games. The Asian Games 2022 were originally scheduled from September 10 to 25.

The host city of Hangzhou is less than 200km away from Shanghai, which is currently fighting another major COVID-19 outbreak and has strict restrictions in place, including a weeks-long lockdown. The OCA also announced that the third edition of the Asian Youth Games, scheduled to be held in Shantou in December, have been cancelled. The World University Games 2021, to be held from June 26 to July 27 in Chengdu this year, have also been pushed to 2023.

HDFC ERGO launches ‘Pay as you Drive’ program to reduce costs of premium: HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company announced the launch of its ‘Pay as you Drive’ program; an insurance solution that offers distance-based insurance to reduce upfront costs of premium. This policy will be best suited for those customers who prefer to drive less or have multiple cars with some of those driven less than the others. This program, under the regulatory sandbox, is applicable for 10,000 policies or ₹50 lacs of premium whichever happens earlier and is being offered exclusively through Maruti Suzuki Insurance Broking Private Limited.

 

2. RBI board approves Rajiv Ranjan as MPC member after Mridul Saggar retires: The Reserve Bank of India’s central board approved the nomination of Rajiv Ranjan as a member of the monetary policy committee.Ranjan replaces Mridul Saggar, who retired last month. Ranjan was an advisor in-charge in the monetary policy department, before he was elevated as an executive director.

1. Sudarshan Venu has been named the Managing Director of TVS Motor Company: Sudarshan Venu was named Managing Director of TVS Motor Company at its board meeting. TVS Motor Company is a well-known global manufacturer of two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Sudarshan has shaped the destiny of one of India’s major two-wheeler manufacturers, making it the most award-winning two-wheeler company. He was instrumental in the company’s expansion in India and other significant overseas areas, such as Asia, Africa, and, more recently, Europe.

1. Indian Coast Guard launches Fast Patrol Vessel ‘Kamla Devi’: Indian Coast Guard launched Fast Patrol Vessel ‘Kamla Devi‘in Titagarh, West Bengal. The entire design of this Fast Patrol Vessel ‘Kamla Devi’ was developed in-house by the GRSE shipyard. ‘Kamla Devi’ was scheduled to be the fourth ship in the series of five such FPVs that GRSE was contracted to build for the ICG, but became the fifth as the fourth one was exported to the Republic of Seychelles as the ‘SCG PS Zoroaster’ in 2021.

NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Indo-German Green Hydrogen Task Force established after India and Germany inked a joint declaration of intent: Union Minister for Power, New and Renewable Energy, R.K Singh and German Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Change Dr Robert Habeck virtually signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on an Indo-German Hydrogen Task Force. India has emerged as a global leader in the energy transition, with the world’s highest pace of expansion in renewable energy capacity. Minister R.K. Singh informed his German counterpart that India has a clear bidding procedure, an open market, a quick dispute resolution system, and is widely recognised as one of the most attractive RE investment destinations. Key Points:

a)      India has lofty goals in terms of the energy transition. By 2030, it will have added 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity. India has submitted proposals for green hydrogen.

b)      German companies compete for the development of this ecosystem in India.

c)       Both countries will establish an Indo-German Green Hydrogen Task Force under the agreement signed today to strengthen mutual cooperation in the production, utilisation, storage, and distribution of green hydrogen by creating enabling frameworks for projects, regulations and standards, trade, and joint research and development (R&D) projects.

d)      The National Green Hydrogen Mission was created in India with the purpose of making it the global hub for green hydrogen production and export. Germany has also devised a bold National Hydrogen Strategy with the goal of becoming a global leader in hydrogen technology.

e)      India can create low-cost Green Hydrogen to gradually decarbonize a range of industry sectors, as well as export it to fulfil global demand, thanks to its rich renewable energy potential and experience implementing renewable energy projects. Germany is already undertaking various hydrogen initiatives thanks to its capabilities in research and industry.

f)        The collaboration would be built around the trade of green hydrogen and/or its derivatives like green ammonia and green methanol. Institutional collaboration in collaborative research, lighthouse projects, innovation clusters, and hydrogen hubs would help to catalyse the two countries’ synergistic efforts.

g)      The aggressive deployment goals would also attract investment and economic prospects for both countries’ industries.

 

2. Odisha to host India’s first tribal health observatory: Odisha is planning to create India’s only observatory, which will house data on the state’s indigenous population’s health. The ST and SC Development Department and the RMRC, a regional institution of the Indian Council of Medical Research, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard.

Key Points:

a)      The Tribal Health Observatory (TriHOb) is the “first in the nation,” according to the Information Department, and is aimed to be an effective, evidence-based, and policy-oriented centre.

b)      It will monitor illness burden, health-seeking behaviour, and the healthcare delivery system in relation to tribal health in the state in a systematic and continuing manner.

c)       ‘Mo School’ Abhiyan chairman Sushmita Bagchi also inaugurated a tribal family health survey among indigenous groups during the event in which the MoU was signed.

d)      The survey will serve as a springboard for future longitudinal cohort studies and policy research.

e)      The ‘Mo School’ (My School) programme aims to connect, collaborate, and contribute to the renovation of government and government-aided schools in Odisha.

 

RailTel & WHO inaugurated Mobile Container Hospital at Visakhapatnam: The RailTel Corporation of India Ltd had designed and established a “Health Cloud” at Visakhapatnam premises of Andhra Pradesh Med Tech Zone (AMTZ). The Andhra Pradesh Med Tech Zone (AMTZ) is the world’s first integrated medical device manufacturing hub. The “Health Cloud” at AMTZ has been inaugurated by Louise Agersnap, Head of WHO Innovation Hub, WHO-Geneva.

About the Initiative:

a)      RailTel has provided complete technological support for teleconsultation solutions for the Mobile Container Hospital which has been designed and built-in AMTZ with all the necessary Hospital setup for ready-to-operationalise in remote areas. It can also be operationalised on the wheels. It comes with a Health ATM to dispense the medicines through Mobile App having a digital payment interface.

b)      All the initiatives under this partnership will facilitate empowering of hospitals in rural areas with hi-tech digital healthcare facilities and thereby making universal health care access a reality.

c)       RailTel is also providing cloud and connectivity support to the Electronic Medical Record Alliance (EMRA) which is an important consortium formed to provide Hospital Information System (HIS) solution to small entities for building EMR bringing everyone into the fold of the digital health ecosystem.

d)      The consortium aspires to emerge as a Health Digital Data Fiduciary Services and Health Information Exchange fully complying and seamlessly integrating into the ABDM ecosystem.

 

4. BRO celebrates its 62nd raising day on 7th May: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was founded on 7th May 1960 as a leading road construction agency under the Ministry of Defence with Shramena Sarvam Sadhyam (everything is achievable through hard work) as its motto. On 7 May 2022 BRO celebrated its 62nd Raising Day (foundation day).

About BRO: It is a leading road construction agency under the Ministry of Defence. Its primary role is to provide road connectivity in India’s border areas. It also creates upgrades and maintains infrastructure along borders to meet India’s overall tactical and strategic goals. Apart from road construction it also executes maintenance works along Northern and Western frontiers mainly to meet the strategic requirements of the Indian Army. 1. Launch of the UN Energy Action Plan for 2025: With the launch of a UN-Energy Plan of Action Towards 2025, the UN took a major step towards catalyzing the large-scale action and support needed for the transition to clean, affordable energy for all and net-zero emissions against the backdrop of a global energy crisis and worsening climate emergency.

Key Points:

a)      Around 30 important organisations, including UN-Energy, launched the ‘Plan of Action.’

b)      According to the UN, an Energy Compact Action Network has been established to connect nations seeking support for their clean energy ambitions with governments and corporations that have pledged more than $600 billion to support these commitments.

c)       Coalitions supporting energy access and transition in Nigeria, Santiago, and Chile were announced, demonstrating the Network’s potential, as well as coalitions supporting green hydrogen and a better role for women in leading and benefiting from the energy transition.

d)      Liu Zhenmin, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and Secretary-General of the 2021 High-Level Dialogue on Energy said that the Global Roadmap that emerged from the High-level Dialogue calls for strengthened efforts by the UN system, supported by UN-Energy, including the creation of a global multi-stakeholder Energy Compact Action Network,

e)      Achim Steiner, Administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and co-chair of UN-Energy, said that the UN-Energy Plan of Action is our collective response to today’s global energy and climate challenges, noting that the commitments made at the 2021 High-Level Dialogue on Energy and COP26 must be translated into actions on the ground.

f)        As part of this, UNDP is scaling up its energy work to help countries achieve a just energy transition, allowing them to make progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals while also addressing the climate problem.

 

2. World Athletics Day: 7th May: World Athletics Day is celebrated every year globally on the 7th of May to raise awareness about the importance of fitness and encourage them to play sports, especially athletics. The basic objective of World Athletics Day is to boost the participation of youths in athletics. The World Athletics Day gave a chance to schools, colleges and various other institutions to promote their children’s interests in various other sports from running to shot put and various other sports which require stamina.

History of World Athletics Day: In 1996, World Athletics Day was started by the then International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) President Primo Nebiolo. The World Athletics federation and an international governing body for the field of athletics, IAAF, organises and sponsors this day every year since then, with a focus on fitness and health.

Tokyo Olympian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur provisionally suspended: Olympian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur has been provisionally suspended by Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for testing positive for a banned substance. Kamalpreet, who was tested on March 29, was suspended for the presence/use of the prohibited substance stanozolol in her sample, a breach of the World Athletics anti-doping rules. Kaur had made it to the Tokyo Olympics final, finishing sixth with a throw of 63.7m.

A provisional suspension is when an athlete or other person is suspended temporarily from participating in any competition or activity in athletics prior to a final decision at a hearing conducted under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules or the Integrity Code of Conduct. Last year, Kamalpreet became the first Indian to breach the 65m-mark in the discus throw. She has a national record against her name which she created with a throw of 66.59m at the Indian Grand Prix.

IBM Chairman Arvind Krishna elected to the Board of Federal Reserve Bank of New York: IBM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Arvind Krishna has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He will fill the vacancy in the office for the remaining portion of a three-year term ending December 31, 2023.

About the Arvind Krishna: Krishna, who has an undergraduate degree from IIT-Kanpur and a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been elected as a Class B director, “representing the public with due but not exclusive consideration to the interests of agriculture, commerce, industry, services, labour, and consumers. Prior to his stint as the IBM CEO, the 60-year-old Krishna was Senior Vice President of Cloud and Cognitive Software. He also headed IBM Research. He was the general manager of IBM Systems and Technology Group’s development and manufacturing organisation.

Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor Takes Charge as DG (Inspection and Safety): Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor has assumed the appointment of Director General (Inspection and Safety) of Indian Air Force at Air HQ New Delhi. The Air Marshal is a graduate of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the Flying branch of IAF in December 1985 as a Transport Pilot.

Sanjeev Kapoor is an alumnus of Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) Wellington, College of Defence Management and National Defence College. The Air Officer is a Qualified Flying Instructor with more than 7700 hours of flying experience on various aircraft in the inventory of IAF. The Air Officer is a recipient of Vayu Sena Medal and Ati Vishist Seva Medal. In a service career spanning over 36 years, the Air Marshal has tenanted important command and staff appointments.
