Nation celebrates 76th Independence Day on 15th August 2022: This year India
is celebrating 76th Independence Day on 15th August 2022 to mark the country’s
freedom from nearly two centuries of British colonial rule. Prime Minister
Narendra Modi is leading the celebrations from Red Fort in New Delhi and is
addressing the nation from Red Fort in New Delhi. This is his ninth address as
the prime minister. To celebrate the 75 years of Independence the Government of
India has started an initiative called “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.
On March 12, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra
Modi has launched the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” to celebrate and commemorate 75
years of independence that started a 75-week countdown to our anniversary of
independence. This means that India will celebrate its 76th Independence Day on
August 15, 2022, and mark the end of its 75 years of freedom.
Independence Day honours the sacrifices of
our courageous leaders and freedom fighters, who gave their all for the sake of
the nation and the countrymen. This day serves us the perfect opportunity to
travel back in time and reflect on the history and significance of this date.
Some Interesting points:
a)
Five
other countries celebrate their independence on August 15 along with India.
They are Bahrain, North Korea, South Korea and Liechtenstein.
b)
Even
after India’s independence, Goa was still a Portuguese colony. It was annexed
to India by the Indian Army only in 1961. Thus, Goa was the last state to join
the Indian territory.
c)
While
India gained independence from British rule on 15th August 1947, there were
certain regions which still remained under European control. The French had
control over Puducherry. The French transferred the territories under its
control to India on 1st of November 1954.

World’s Highest Chenab Railway Bridge Inaugurated: The golden joint
of the world’s highest railway bridge over River Chenab was inaugurated. For
the first time ever since independence, Srinagar will be linked to the rest of
India after the overarch deck on the world’s highest single-arch railway bridge
over River Chenab. The bridge will be 35 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower.
About Chenab River: The Chenab is
formed by the confluence of two streams, Chandra and Bhaga, in the western
(Punjab) Himalayas in India’s Himachal Pradesh state. It flows west through
Jammu and Kashmir union territory—the Indian-administered portion of the
disputed Kashmir region)—between the steep cliffs of the Shiwalik Range (south)
and the Lesser Himalayas (north). After receiving the Jhelum River near Trimmu,
the Chenab empties into the Sutlej River, a tributary of the Indus River.

Arunachal’s 3rd Airport Named ‘Donyi Polo Airport’: The third airport
in Arunachal Pradesh, which is now under construction in Itanagar, the state
capital, has been given the name “Donyi Polo Airport” by the Arunachal Pradesh
administration. According to a representative of the Chief Minister’s Office,
the state cabinet adopted “Donyi Polo Airport” as the name of the airport at
its meeting. Pema Khandu, the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, presided
over the gathering.
The name of the only airport in the capital
city, according to the official, would represent the long-standing customs and
rich cultural legacy of the tribally dominant state and would also reflect the
long-standing indigenous respect for the Sun (Donyi) and the Moon (Polo) among
the populace. The Airport Authority of India has undertaken a Rs 650 crore
project to develop the airport to boost air connectivity in the mountainous
areas.
The “Donyi Polo Airport” in Itanagar would
be Arunachal Pradesh`s third airport after Pasighat and Tezu airports and
northeast India`s 16th airport.

William Ruto is declared Kenya’s next president: Kenyan Deputy
President, William Ruto is now the country’s president-elect after he was
declared the winner of the last presidential election over five-time contender
Raila Odinga. Before Wafula Chebukati, the chair of Kenya’s electoral
commission could announce Ruto’s victory. Ruto received 50.49% of the vote, the
chairman said, while Odinga received 48.85%.
Ruto, who has promised a break from the
“dynasties” that have dominated Kenyan politics since independence, projected a
conciliatory tone in his acceptance speech, urging unity. Kenya is a model of
democracy in East Africa, a region where authoritarianism has been ascendant.
These elections had been hailed as a step forward for Kenyan democracy because
the campaign was marked by political maturity. Politicians focused on economic
issues, instead of the tribal mobilization that has been a feature of every
Kenyan election since independence.
