NATIONAL UPDATES:

1.    Air India- Vistara merger gets NCLT nod: The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has granted its approval for the merger of Vistara with Air India allowing a period of nine months for the dissolution of the former. Tata Sons Private Limited will hold 73.38% stake in the merged entity, and Singapore Airlines 25.1%. The remaining 1.52% will be held by SBICAP Trustee Limited on behalf of Air India Employee Settlement Trust. The anti-competition trusts of India and Singapore have already granted their nod for the integration. Next, the DGCA will have to approve the transfer of Vistara’s crew, operations and aircraft to Air India.

 

2.  18th Mumbai International Film Festival to be held from June 15-21: The 18th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) will be held in Mumbai from June 15 to 21. The film gala, which showcases non-feature films (documentary, short Fiction and animation) will be at the FD-NFDC Complex in Mumbai. Besides, MIFF screenings will also be held in Delhi at Sirifort Auditorium, Chennai at Tagore Film Centre, Pune at NFAI auditorium and Kolkata at SRFTI Auditorium. The 2024 edition will open with the screening of National Geographic’s documentary “Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story”.

 

3.    Kamal Kishore Soan takes over the charge of DG of ESIC: Kamal Kishore Soan took over the additional charge of Director General of Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) under Ministry of Labour & Employment. Soan is a senior 1998 batch’s IAS officer from Jharkhand Cadre. He is currently serving as an Additional Secretary and Director General, Labour Welfare in the Ministry of Labour & Employment.

1. Pakistan, Panama, Somalia, Greece elected as UNSC non-permanent members: Pakistan, Somalia, Denmark, Greece and Panama were elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for a two-year term beginning 2025. The five members were elected by a secret ballot in the UN General Assembly for a 2-year term starting on January 1, 2025, until December 31, 2026. In the two seats for African and Asia-Pacific States, Somalia got 179 votes and Pakistan

182. In the Latin American and Caribbean States, Panama got 183 votes while in the Western European and other States, Denmark got 184 votes and Greece 182.


2.  India launches Biopharmaceutical Alliance with US, Japan, & South Korea: India, South Korea, Japan, the US, and the European Union has launched an alliance to put joint efforts to build a resilient supply chain in the biopharmaceutical sector. The announcement was made at the inaugural meeting of the Biopharmaceutical Alliance, held in San Diego, California, during the Bio International Convention 2024, the world’s largest biopharmaceutical exhibition. The participants emphasized the importance of a reliable and sustainable supply chain and agreed to coordinate the respective countries’ bio policies, regulations, and research and development support measures.

 

3.    First IPEF Clean Economy Investor Forum meeting held in Singapore: Singapore hosted the first Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) Clean Economy Investor Forum meeting. The meeting was held along with the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) Ministerial meeting. The Indian delegation was led by Sunil Barthwal, Secretary of the Department of Commerce. The Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) Clean Economy Investor Forum was organised to bring together the Asia Pacific region’s top investors, clean economy companies, and start-ups to mobilise investments into renewable energy projects, sustainable infrastructure and climate technology.

 

4.   8 June – World Oceans Day: The United Nations marks World Oceans Day each year on 8 June through a annual event coordinated by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (Office of Legal Affairs). Objective – To create awareness and urge people to take measures in ensuring to restore the health of the oceans of the world. Theme 2024 Awaken New Depths In 1992, World Oceans Day was proposed at the Earth Summit that took place in Rio De Janeiro. On December 5, 2008, The UN General Assembly designated June 8 to be observed as World Oceans Day every year.

 

5.   8 June – World Brain Tumour Day: World Brain Tumour Day is observed globally on 8 June. Objective To raises awareness about brain tumours and supports those affected by this serious condition. Theme 2024 – Brain Health and Prevention The history of World Brain Tumour Day goes back 24 years when it was first observed in the year 2000 by a Leipzig-based NPO Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe e.V or German Brain Tumour Association.

1.   SBI General Insurance withdraws Arogya Plus policy with effect from Oct 5: Private general insurer, SBI General Insurance Company has announced the withdrawal of its Arogya Plus policy with effect from October 5, 2024. As per the regulatory requirement, insurance companies must give 90 days’ advance intimation to their customers before withdrawing a policy. Policyholders holding the Arogya Plus policy will be given an option to migrate to a comprehensive health


insurance policy like Super Health Insurance or to any other individual health insurance product available with the general insurer, including the Standard Product.

 

2.    RBI set up a committee to Mitigate Payment Fraud: The Reserve Bank has constituted a committee under the Chairmanship of former MD and CEO of National Payments Corporation of India, A P Hota to examine various aspects of setting up a digital public infrastructure for Digital Payments Intelligence Platform. RBI is mulling to set up a Digital Payments Intelligence Platform to mitigate payment fraud risks. The Committee is expected to give its recommendations within two months. Domestic payment frauds jumped by 70.64 per cent to Rs 2,604 crore during the six-month period ended March 2024 from Rs 1,526 crore in the same period of last year. The volume of frauds also rose to 15.51 lakh during the March 2024 period from 11.5 lakh in the previous six-month period, RBI data shows.

1. Vellayan Subbiah named the EY World Entrepreneur of The Year 2024: Vellayan Subbiah was named the EY World Entrepreneur of The Year 2024 at an award ceremony held in Monaco’s Salle des Etoiles. He is an Executive Vice-Chairman of Tube Investments of India (TII) and Chairman of Cholamandalam (Chola) Investment and Finance Co. Ltd. Vellayan was selected from among nearly 5,000 programme participants that included 51 winners across 47 countries and jurisdictions competing for the global title. NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. India’s first astro tourism campaign ‘Nakshatra Sabha’ organised in Mussoorie: India’s first astro tourism campaign “Nakshatra Sabha” was inaugurated at the George Everest peak in Mussoorie. The venue of the event, George Everest Peak is a major tourist attraction in Mussoorie which offers spectacular views of the snow-clad Himalayan peaks and the Doon Valley. The state tourism ministry plans to organise a series of Nakshatra Sabhas at popular tourist destinations in the hilly state. The Uttarakhand government wants to promote Uttarakhand as a multidimensional tourist spot in the country. At present the state is known for its spiritual tourism.

 

2. NOTA creates record in MP’s Indore Lok Sabha Seat: NOTA created a record with 2.18 lakh voters in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore opting for the ‘none of the above’ option in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Of the total voters, 14.01 per cent opted for ‘None of the Above’, which was introduced in 2013 following a Supreme Court order. In the 2019 parliamentary polls, voters in Bihar’s Gopalganj had created a record with 51,660 of them, or five per cent, opting for the NOTA option, which is placed as the last option on the electronic voting machine. Out of 61,31,33,300 votes polled in the 2019 polls, 65,14,558 (1.06 per cent) were polled for NOTA.

 

3. Haryana Police Secures First Position in Blocking Mobile Numbers Involved In Cyber Crime: Haryana Police has secured the first position in the country in blocking mobile numbers involved in cyber crime. According to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, a total of 5 lakh 46 thousand mobile numbers involved in cyber crime were blocked across the country from 1st January to 31st April this year, out of which 1 lakh 11 thousand 349 mobile numbers were blocked by Haryana Police. This is the second major achievement of Haryana Police at the national level regarding cyber crime control.

 

4. Asirvad Micro Finance appoints Satish Nair as President and CEO: Asirvad Micro Finance Limited, a subsidiary of Manappuram Finance Limited, has appointed Satish Nair as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Asirvad, headquartered in Valapad, Kerala, is the third largest microfinance institution (in terms of AUM as of June 2023), offering microfinance loans to low-income women. As of June 2023, Asirvad has a presence in 22 States and 4 Union Territories in India through its network of 1,684 branches, with assets under management (AUM) of over Rs10,000 crore.

 

5. Sameer Bansal appointed CEO of PNB MetLife: Life insurer PNB MetLife India Insurance has appointed Sameer Bansal as its managing director and chief executive, effective from July 1. He succeeds Ashish Srivastava, who has been appointed managing director for New York-based MetLife Inc’s global shared services team in India. He joined PNB MetLife in 2007 and currently serves as Chief Distribution Officer and a member of the leadership team. Bansal has more than 25 years of experience in financial services, including leading distribution through bancassurance, agency, digital, employee benefits and direct marketing business models.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Russian cosmonaut becomes 1st person to spend 1,000 cumulative days in space: A Russian cosmonaut became the first person to spend a cumulative 1,000 days in space. Oleg Kononenko, 59, reached the record while on his current mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Kononenko’s current mission to the ISS began September 15, 2023, and is planned to end September 23, 2024, which will bring in his total number of days spent in orbit to 1,110.

Kononenko cumulated the days in space over several missions. His first was Expedition 17 to the ISS, which launched in April 2008. In total, Kononenko has been on five separate missions to the ISS.

 

2. 7 June – World Food Safety Day: World Food Safety Day (WFSD) is celebrated every year on June 7. World Food Safety Day activities aim to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with contaminated food and the need for effective food safety measures to prevent illness. Theme 2024 – Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected. World Food Safety Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018. It was first celebrated on June 7, 2019.

1. Sarabjot Singh Wins Gold Medal in 10m Air Pistol Event at ISSF WC: Indian shooter Sarabjot Singh won the gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2024 in Munich, Germany. He won the first medal for India in the event. Singh scored 242.7 to win the gold medal in the final. Shuaihang Bu of China shot 242.5 for the silver medal while Germany’s Robin Walter settled for the bronze medal in the final with a score of 220.0. This was the second individual ISSF World Cup gold medal for Singh. He had won the same shooting event at the ISSF World Cup in Bhopal last year. He also won the air pistol mixed team gold medal in Baku in 2023.

1. MeitY in collaboration with UNESCO host National Workshop on Safe, Trusted, Ethical AI: Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in collaboration with the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) South Asia Regional Office hosted a Workshop on Safe, Trusted and Ethical Artificial Intelligence in New Delhi. The workshop aimed to establish a foundation for informed policy development that promotes equitable and sustainable AI adoption nationwide.

 

BANKING AND FINANCE

 

1. SEBI mulls raising limit for basic service demat account to Rs 10 lakh: Capital markets regulator SEBI proposed to enhance the threshold for the basic service demat account (BSDA) to Rs 10 lakh from the current Rs 2 lakh in a bid to boost the participation of retail investors in the securities market. A basic service demat account, or BSDA, is a more basic version of a regular demat account for BSDA. The facility was introduced by Sebi in 2012 for reducing the burden of demat charges on investors with small portfolios. At present, an individual can hold debt securities worth up to Rs 2 lakh and other than debt securities worth up to Rs 2 lakh in a single demat account to be eligible for BSDA.

 

2. SBI and Muthoot Microfin join forces to support women entrepreneurs: Muthoot Microfin has entered into a strategic co-lending partnership with the State Bank of India (SBI). Under the agreement, Muthoot Microfin and SBI will co-lend to members of Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) who are engaged in agricultural and allied activities as well as other income-generating enterprises. The loan amounts will range from a minimum of Rs 10,000 to a maximum of Rs 3 lakh. With this collaboration, Muthoot Microfin Limited aims to extend its financial services to women entrepreneurs in rural and semi-urban regions across India. 3. IOB opens an exclusive branch for start-ups in Chennai: Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has inaugurated a new, exclusive branch on Anna Salai (Mount Road) in Chennai, dedicated entirely to support start-ups. This initiative aims to provide robust financial services and comprehensive support to budding entrepreneurs and emerging enterprises. IOB‘s dedicated start-up branch offers a wide range of financial products and services tailored specifically for new ventures and start-ups. This makes it a one-stop solution for entrepreneurial needs. During the inauguration, the bank introduced the “IOB start-up current account” and the “IOB Pragati” credit scheme to finance start-ups. Additionally, 35 start-ups were onboarded during the event.

 

4. Kotak Mahindra Bank gets RBI nod for Zurich Insurance’s 70% acquisition of Kotak General: Reserve Bank of India has approved Zurich Insurance Company’s proposed acquisition of 70 per cent stake in Kotak Mahindra General Insurance Company for a total consideration of approximately Rs 5,560 crore. Earlier in February, the Bank had announced that Zurich Insurance would acquire a 70 per cent stake in the insurance company for Rs 5,560 crore in a single tranche. In November 2023, Zurich Insurance had said it would first acquire a 51 per cent stake through a combination of fresh growth capital and share purchase, and an additional 19 per cent stake later on. Kotak Mahindra General Insurance Company is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Kotak Mahindra Bank.

C-DOT wins UN’s WSIS 2024 PRIZE Champion Award: Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the premier Telecom R&D centre of the GoI, awarded UN’s WSIS 2024 “Champion” Award for the project “Mobile-Enabled Disaster Resilience through Cell Broadcast emergency Alerting”, recognised under AI, C-7, E-environemnt, in the category of ‘Benefits in all aspects of life – E-environment”. The C-DOT’s mobile–enabled Cell Broadcast Emergency Alerting Platform is an end-to-end solution for near real time delivery of life-saving emergency information to mobile phones through cellular networks.

 

2. Nar Singh, Rohini Lokhande win Dilip Bose Lifetime Achievement Award: The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has announced the Dilip Bose award for lifetime achievement to coach Nar Singh. The first award would be presented to the 69-year-old Rohini Lokhande who was a member of the national team along with Kiran Bedi, Nirupama Mankad, Susan Das and Udaya Kumar, before she took to coaching at a young age.

1. Volvo to issue world’s first EV battery passport ahead of EU rules: Volvo Cars has launched the world’s first EV battery passport recording the origins of raw materials, components, recycled content and carbon footprint for its flagship EX90 SUV, which is about to start production. The passport was developed by Volvo (VOLCARb.ST) which is owned by China’s Geely (GEELY.UL), in partnership with UK startup Circular. Battery passports will be mandatory for electric vehicles (EVs) sold in the European Union from February 2027 showing the composition of batteries, including the origin of key materials, their carbon footprint and recycled content.

 

2. IIT Dharwad Unveils Innovative Fire Rescue Drone: A team of teachers and students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad, led by Sudheer Siddapureddy and Ameer Mulla, has developed a fire rescue assistant drone. The project was completed with funding from TiHAN Foundation, IIT Hyderabad (NMICPS, Government of India). The unveiling and demonstration of the fire rescue assistant drone was held during the two-day workshop on Drone Design and Autonomous Navigation in Fire Rescue (DDANFR 2024) held at IIT Dharwad.

 

3. PM launches ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ Campaign: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign to commemorate the World Environment Day. PM Modi planted a peepal tree sapling at Buddha Jayanti Park in Delhi. He was accompanied by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, commemorates the inaugural day of the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

 

4. CBIC Chairperson inaugurates GST Bhawan at Rohtak: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) chairman Sanjay Kumar Agarwal inaugurated the GST Bhawan, an official complex of CGST Rohtak Commissionerate at Rohtak, Haryana. The newly inaugurated GST Bhawan is easily accessible to help GST taxpayers and is at the centre of connectivity to the main districts of Haryana.

 

5. 3rd Indian Analytical Congress held at CSIR-IIP Dehradun: The three-day 3rd Indian Analytical Congress was held in Uttarakhand’s capital, Dehradun. The Congress was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of Ladakh University, Prof. S.K. Mehta. The conference aims to provide a platform for analytical scientists, technologists, academics, and students to exchange ideas and discuss the latest developments in this field. Cashfree Payments appoints Abhaya Hota as Independent Director: Payments and API banking company Cashfree Payments has appointed former NPCI MD & CEO Abhaya Hota as an Independent Director of the company. He was the Managing Director & CEO of the National Payments Corporation of India, where he played a critical role in the design, development, and implementation of payment systems and policies in India.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Netherlands emerges as India’s 3rd largest export destination in 2023-24: The Netherlands has emerged as India’s third largest export destination after the US and UAE during 2023-24, even as the country’s merchandise shipments dipped by over 3 per cent, according to the commerce ministry data. The main commodities which registered healthy exports growth in the Netherlands include petroleum products, electrical goods, chemicals and pharma. India’s trade surplus with the Netherlands has increased to USD 17.4 billion in the last fiscal from USD 13 billion in 2022-23. The Netherlands has taken over major destinations such as the UK, Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Germany.

 

2. Rakesh Mohan Joshi appointed as Vice-Chancellor of IIFT: International trade and management expert Rakesh Mohan Joshi took charge as vice-chancellor of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), a business school under the ministry of commerce. Joshi a former Dean of the institute was on deputation to Bengaluru-based Indian Institute of Plantation Management as Director. Prof Joshi has received his education and training from Harvard Business School, Boston; IIFT, Rajasthan University and National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal. He has been associated with several multilateral organisations such as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, UNCTAD, International Dairy Federation and Asian Productivity Organisation among others.

 

3. 6 June – UN Russian Language Day: UN Russian Language Day is observed on 6 June, and was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2010. This day is dedicated to promoting the study and appreciation of Russian language. It coincides with the birthday of Aleksandr Pushkin, one of the most prominent Russian writers and creators. The birthday of Pushkin is February 1799. Pushkin is considered to be the father of contemporary Russian literature. His first poem was published when he was only 15 years old.

1. GRSE to build Research Vessel for DRDO in ₹500 crore deal: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), a leading Indian shipyard, has emerged victorious in the bidding process for a new research vessel for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This significant win marks another milestone for GRSE and signifies its expertise in constructing specialized vessels. This accomplishment highlights GRSE’s competitiveness in the shipbuilding industry and its ability to deliver cost-effective solutions. While the exact value of the contract remains undisclosed, estimates suggest it could surpass ₹500 crore, signifying a substantial project for the shipyard.

1. Armwrestling set to be included in upcoming Asian Youth Para Games: The Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) announced the inclusion of armwrestling as an official sport in the upcoming Asian Youth Para Games. The Games will take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in September-October 2025. The Youth Para Asian Games are an opportunity to introduce, grow and promote a new sport in the region. Previously also, we have had the chance to promote a sport in our programmes and there has been a lot of excitement. Armwrestling, a popular sport in the Asian region and in fact all over the World, will be introduced in the sports programme of an Asian Youth Para Games for the first time in Tashkent.

1. NPCI International signs partnership with Reserve Bank of Peru to enable UPI payments: NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) and the Reserve Bank of Peru have announced a partnership to enable UPI-like real-time payments system in the Latin American country. This collaboration marks a significant milestone, making Peru the first country in South America to adopt the globally renowned Unified Payment Interface (UPI) technology. UPI’s collaborative and open banking ethos enables greater connectivity and interoperability with both domestic and international payment networks, fostering innovation and resilience in the Peruvian payment ecosystem. 2. Defence Ministry signs MoUs with 4 Banks to onboard them as SPARSH Service Centres: Defence Accounts Department, Ministry of Defence has signed MoU with Bank of India, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India and Utkarsh Small Finance Bank in New Delhi to onboard them as System for Pension Administration Raksha (SPARSH) Service Centres. The MoUs will provide last-mile connectivity to pensioners, especially in remote areas where they do not have technical wherewithal to log on to SPARSH. These Service Centres will become an interface for pensioners for SPARSH, providing an effective medium to update their profile, register grievances, digital annual identification, data verification, besides fetching detailed information regarding their monthly pension.
