1. Tata Group retains top spot as India’s most valuable brand at $28.6 billion: Tata Group has retained its position as India’s most valuable brand with a value of $28.6 billion, reflecting a 9 per cent increase from last year. Following Tata, Infosys holds the second position, while HDFC Group has made a significant leap to third place, in Brand Value’s ‘India 100 2024 ranking. Brand Finance’s report highlighted that Tata Group marks the first time an Indian brand is nearing the $30 billion mark. Meanwhile, HDFC was propelled to the third position driven by its monumental merger with HDFC Ltd. This merger has bolstered HDFC Group’s brand value, reflecting a strong presence in the financial sector. Taj, valued at $545 million, maintains its position as India’s strongest brand with an impressive Brand Strength Index (BSI) score of 92.9 out of 100 and a prestigious AAA+ rating for brand strength.

 

2. RPF launches Sangyaan App to educate and empower RPF Personnel: The Director General of Railway Protection Force (RPF) Manoj Yadava has launched the mobile application-Sangyaan App. It is designed and developed by the Tech Team of RPF to provide in-depth information on three new Criminal Acts: The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) 2023.Sangyaan App aims to educate and empower RPF Personnel by providing comprehensive information to understand the provisions of both new and old criminal laws, while highlighting the relevance of these new acts in the context of RPF operations. The app features user-friendly navigation, a searchable database and offline access, making it a practical tool for anyone seeking to stay informed about the latest legal developments in India.

 

3. MoE launches nationwide campaign on Tobacco Free Educational Institutions: The Ministry of Education (MoE) under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) has initiated a nationwide campaign focused on Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI). Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education has developed a “ToFEI Implementation Manual” for schools and launched it on World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) which was observed on 31st May, 2024. The objective is to make educational institutions across the nation comply with the ToFEI guidelines and become #Tobacco Free Area. The initiative outlines several key measures to be implemented in schools nationwide, including the display of “Tobacco Free Area” signage within school premises, prohibiting evidence of tobacco use on campus, organizing regular tobacco control activities, and nominating “Tobacco Monitors” among staff.

 

4. 28 June – National Insurance Awareness Day: National Insurance Awareness Day is observed every year on June 28. This day is dedicated to promoting the importance of insurance and ensuring that people understand the benefits of having adequate insurance coverage. The day also serves as a reminder to review insurance plans regularly and to make sure that they are up-to-date and reflect the changing needs of the individual. The history of insurance dates back to the Great Fire of London in 1886. The devastation caused by the fires led to the development of new forms of insurance that could protect individuals and families from the financial risks of major events.

 

5. 29 June – National Statistics Day: National Statistics Day is observed every year on June 29 to honour the late scientist Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. The day highlights his contributions to the field of statistics and economic planning in the post-independent era. The day is not to be confused with the United Nations’ World Statistics Day, which is celebrated every five years on October 20. It also aims to raise public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning. It encourages the use of statistical tools and techniques in addressing real-world challenges.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. S Jaishankar to represent India at SCO summit in Kazakhstan: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent India at the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Astana. The SCO summit to be held on July 3 and 4 is expected to focus on the regional security situation and ways to boost connectivity and trade. The SCO, comprising India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan is an influential economic and security bloc that has emerged as one of the largest transregional international organisations. India’s association with the SCO began in 2005 as an observer country. It became a full member state of the SCO at the Astana summit in 2017. The SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by the presidents of Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Pakistan became its permanent member along with India in 2017.

 

2. Deputy NSA Vikram Misri to be new Foreign Secretary: Deputy National Security Advisor Vikram Misri will take charge as the Foreign Secretary on July 15. Misri, who is a former Indian ambassador to China, will succeed current Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra. Before he was appointed as the Deputy NSA, Vikram Misri served as India’s ambassador to China from 2019-2021. Misri, 59, is believed to have played a key role in talks between India and China after tensions flared significantly following the Galwan Valley clashes in June, 2020. Misri also served as India’s ambassador to Spain (2014-2016) and Myanmar (2016-2018) besides having stints in many Indian missions including Pakistan, the US, Germany, Belgium and Sri Lanka.

 

3. 27 June – International Pineapple Day: International Pineapple Day is celebrated every year on 27 June. This day is dedicated to the tropical fruit pineapple and its nutritional, economic, and cultural benefits. The day dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries when pineapples were used as a symbol of warmth and welcome. In Asia, pineapples symbolize prosperity and good fortune, while in the Caribbean, they symbolize friendship.

1. DRDO’s ‘ABHYAS’ Completes Six Successful Trials: ABHYAS is a High-Speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) that was made by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) in Bengaluru, India, for the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

1. India beat South Africa by 7 runs to win ICC T20 World Cup 2024: India ended their 13-year wait for an ICC Cricket World Cup trophy when they beat South Africa by seven runs to lift the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in a thrilling final at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. India also became the first team to win the men’s T20 World Cup without losing a game all tournament. India won all eight matches they played in the tournament, and had one washout: the first-round game against Canada. With 281 runs from Eight games, Rahmanullah Gurbsaz of Afghanistan is the top scorer in the T20 World Cup 2024. While Rohit Sharma was second in the list with 257 runs at a strike rate of 156.70. Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi was the joint highest wicket-taker with along with India’s Arshdeep Singh – 17 wickets.

1. NASA picks SpaceX to destroy International Space Station: NASA had picked SpaceX to build a vessel to carry the International Space Station back through Earth’s atmosphere and on to a final resting place in the Pacific Ocean after it is retired in 2030. Elon Musk’s company has been awarded a contract with a potential value of US$843 million to develop and deliver the spaceship, dubbed the US Deorbit Vehicle. Selecting a US Deorbit Vehicle for the International Space Station will help NASA and its international partners ensure a safe and responsible transition in low Earth orbit at the end of station operations. Weighing 430,000 kilograms (950,000) pounds, the ISS is by far the largest single structure ever built in space. The first segment of the ISS was launched in 1998, and it has been continuously inhabited by an international crew since 2001.

 

2. Artificial Intelligence Preparedness Index 2024 – India Ranks at 72nd: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) just released a full Artificial Intelligence Preparedness Index (AIPI) Dashboard. This tool will sort and rank 174 countries around the world based on how ready they are to use AI.

1. World Bank Grants $1.5 Billion for India’s Green Energy Push: The World Bank has agreed to lend India $1.5 billion to help it move toward a low-carbon energy future. This strategic funding will help create green hydrogen and electrolyzers and make it easier for the country to use renewable energy.

1. Dr. Usha Thakur awarded 12th Vishwa Hindi Samman: Usha Thakur was awarded the 12th Vishwa Hindi Samman (World Hindi Conference) at a Hindi Samvad event organized by the Embassy of India in Nepal. She has translated more than 40 literatures in Hindi and Nepali and strengthened Hindi language. This award is given by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. 12th World Hindi Conference was held in Fiji in 2023. As Dr Thakur could not attend the event in Fiji, she was given the award in an event organized in Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu.

1. Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders get Navratna status as 18th PSU: Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders has been granted “Navratna” status by the Department of Public Enterprises. It is now the 18th PSU in the country to receive this status. A Navratna company can undertake investments worth up to Rs. 1,000 crores, without needing approval from the central government. It is also allowed to form Joint Ventures, and alliances and establish subsidiaries abroad. Some notable Navratnas are Engineers India, CONCOR, Bharat Electronics, Hindustan Aeronautics, RCF, NALCO, NMDC, RVNL, IRCON and IREDA. In order to become a Navratna company, the PSU should first be a Miniratna company.

 

2. Union Territory of Ladakh achieves full functional Literacy ULLAS: Ladakh has become the first administrative unit to achieve full functional literacy under the ULLAS-Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram (New India Literacy Program). Lieutenant Governor Dr. BD Mishra made this announcement during a celebration at Sindhu Sanskritik Kendra in Leh. The Union Territory has surpassed 97% literacy, marking a major success for the centrally sponsored scheme aimed at empowering adults aged 15 and above with foundational literacy, numeracy, and critical life skills.

 

3. Tata Sons to Build ₹650 Crore ‘Museum of Temples’ in Ayodhya: The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved Tata Sons’ proposal to build a ‘museum of temples’ in Ayodhya, a project worth Rs 650 crore to be funded through Tata’s corporate social responsibility fund. The plan then was to showcase the history and architecture of famous temples in the country. Also discussed was setting up a light-and-sound show at the proposed museum. Additionally, the state cabinet has also sanctioned Rs 100 crore for further development works in Ayodhya and endorsed the initiation of helicopter services in Lucknow, Prayagraj, and Kapilvastu.

 

4. Aksha Mohit Kamboj appointed VP of India Bullion Jewellers Association: The India Bullion Jewellers Association (IBJA) has appointed Aksha Mohit Kamboj as its Vice President. Kamboj brings with her a wealth of experience and expertise in the field of bullion and jewellery, and her appointment is poised to further strengthen IBJA’s leadership in the industry. Aksha Mohit Kamboj is the Executive Chairman of Aspect Global Ventures Pvt Ltd and is also the co-owner of Cricket ISPL team Tiigers of Kolkata. She is the first and the only woman appointed on such a prestigious post in Gold & Jewellery Sector.

 

5. Mrinal Kumar Das appointed as Director in Department of Consumer Affairs: Mrinal Kumar Das (IRS) has been selected for appointment as Director in the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution for a period of five years. Das is an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of 2007 batch. He was recommended for the Central deputation by the Department of Revenue.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. First International Dairy Federation Asia-Pacific summit concluded in Kochi: The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and the International Dairy Federation (IDF) are jointly organised the first IDF Regional Dairy Conference Asia Pacific-2024 in Kochi. Themed ‘Farmer-centric innovations in dairying’, the event featured insightful deliberations bringing together leaders and experts from the global dairy sector. More than 1,000 delegates and participants from over 20 countries took part in the event.

 

2. India received $120 billion remittances in 2023: World Bank: According to the World Bank report, India has received USD 120 billion remittances in 2023. China (USD 50 billion), the Philippines (USD 39 billion), and Pakistan (USD 27 billion) figure in top five countries list of remittances recipients. Remittance flows to India from the United Arab Emirates, which account for 18 per cent and are the second largest source of India’s remittances after the United States.

In addition to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar account for 11 per cent of India’s total remittances.

DRDO hands over Medium Range-Microwave Obscurant Chaff Rocket to Indian Navy: The Medium Range-Microwave Obscurant Chaff Rocket (MR-MOCR) developed by the Jodhpur Laboratory of the Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was formally handed over to the Indian Navy in New Delhi. The Medium Range-Microwave Obscurant Chaff Rocket (MR-MOCR) developed by the DRDO will enhance the Indian Navy’s defensive capability. The MR-MOCR is a niche technology that integrates a particular type of fibres having unique microwave obscuration properties. This helps mask radar signals and creates a microwave shield around platforms and assets. This will reduce the chance of detection of the Indian Navy’s platforms and assets by the enemy forces.

1. Kapil Dev becomes new Chief of India Golf: World Cup-winning former India cricket captain Kapil Dev has taken over as the new President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). The 65-year-old, who was already a member of the PGTI Board as its Vice President, was chosen unanimously and would be taking over from incumbent H R Srinivasan, whose tenure has come to an end. Kapil played cricket for India from 1978 to 1994. One of the greatest all-rounders of all time, he played 131 Test matches and 225 one-day and led India to the 1983 World Cup win. His 175 not out in 1983 World Cup is considered one of the finest innings in the annals of the game. In Tests, He scored 5248 runs, including eight centuries, and took 434 wickets, which was then a world record. He also scored 3783 runs in ODIs and took 253 wickets in the format.

 

2. Anush Agarwalla selected by EFI to represent India in Dressage at Paris Olympics: The Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) has selected Anush Agarwalla to represent the country in the dressage event at the upcoming Paris Olympics. EFI selected him over Shruti Vora based on a thorough assessment of their recent performances, where Anush demonstrated a superior average. It will be India’s first ever entry at the dressage event at the Olympics as largely riders in past editions competed in eventing categories only.

1. India likely to grow at 7.5% in FY25: NCAER: The National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) forecasts India’s FY25 GDP growth at about 7.5%, driven by strong economic activity. Recently, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised its projections for India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth to 7.2% from 7% in FY25. Growth projections have been upgraded by various other agencies as well with the median projection at 6.9%. Director General of NCAER – Poonam Gupta

 

2. SBI raises ₹10,000 crore through infra bonds: State Bank of India (SBI) has raised ₹10,000 crore at a coupon rate of 7.36 per cent through its fifth infrastructure bond issuance. The issue attracted an overwhelming response from investors, with bids in excess of ₹19,884 crore, and was oversubscribed by around four times against the base issue size of ₹5,000 crore. Based on the response, the bank has decided to accept ₹10,000 crore at a coupon rate of 7.36 per cent payable annually. This represents a spread of 21 bps over the corresponding FBIL G-Sec par curve. The instrument is rated AAA with stable outlook.

Arundhati Roy honored with Prestigious Pen Pinter Prize 2024: Booker Prize-winning author Arundhati Roy has been honoured with the prestigious Pen Pinter Prize 2024 for her “unflinching and unswerving” The prize, established in 2009 by the charity English PEN, defends freedom of expression and celebrates literature in memory of Nobel-Laureate playwright Harold Pinter.

 

2. Sanjana Thakur wins UK Commonwealth Short Story Prize: Sanjana Thakur, a 26-year-old writer from Mumbai, won the 2024 Commonwealth Short Story Prize for her story “Aishwarya Rai”. She will receive a cash prize of £5,000. Sanjana Thakur, who is currently pursuing an MFA in Fiction at UT Austin’s New Writers Project, described her story as a “Mumbai story”. Thakur is the third Indian to win the prize after Kritika Pandey won it in 2020 for her story “The Great Indian Tee and Snakes” and Parashar Kulkarni in 2016 for “Cow and Company”.

 

3. Doon School Srinagar honored with Prestigious Award at Indo-Norway International Education Summit: Doon School Srinagar was honored with the “Award for Transformative Education Excellence” at Mind Mingle’s Indo-Norway International Education Summit and Awards 2024, held in Stortinget, Norway. This recognition celebrates the school’s outstanding contributions to education, particularly under the leadership of its Chairman, Showkat Hussain Khan. 1. Jitendra Singh launches ‘One Week One Theme’ Campaign: Jitendra Singh has launched “One Week One Theme” (OWOT) campaign showcasing recent success stories of India in different streams of science and technology. ‘One week One Theme’ is the brainchild of Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh. ‘OWOT’ is built on the legacy and success of the ‘One Week One Lab’ (OWOL) initiative started last year. OWOT program aims to promote their achievements and foster collaboration with industry to empower MSMEs, SHGs, Agripreneurs and Startups.

 

2. Srinagar gets tag of ‘World Craft City’, fourth from country: Srinagar has become the fourth Indian city to be recognised as a ‘World Craft City’ by the World Craft Council (WCC), three years after it was designated as part of the UNESCO Creative City Network (UCCN) for crafts and folk arts. Jaipur, Malappuram and Mysore are the other Indian cities that have previously been recognised as World Craft Cities. As of now, at least 10 different forms of craftsmanship survive in Srinagar and its suburbs, including papier-mâché, walnut wood carving, carpets, Sozni embroidery and Pashmina and Kani shawls.

 

3. L&T win deals for 185 MW solar plant in Bihar: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a major order for setting up a grid-connected 185 megawatt (MW) solar PV plant along with a 254 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Kajra in Lakhisarai district of Bihar. The project cost is estimated to be in the range of ₹2,500-5,000 crore. The BESS, with a capacity of 254 MWh will enable storing solar energy during low-demand periods and discharging when the demand peaks. In addition, the BESS will also help smooth the fluctuations in generation, frequency regulation and voltage support. It comes with a black start capability to the grid that will facilitate quick re-energization after an outage.

 

4. Aditya Birla AMC reappointed A Balasubramanian as MD & CEO for 3 years: Aditya Birla Sun Life Asset Management Company (ABSLAMC) has reappointed A Balasubramanian as its Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for three years, effective from July 25, 2024. Balasubramanian, who brings over three decades of extensive experience, has been associated with ABSLAMC since 1995. Prior to assuming the role of CEO in 2009, he served as Chief Investment Officer from 2006 to 2009. Under his leadership, ABSLAMC currently oversees assets under management exceeding Rs 3.20 lakh crore.

 

5. South India’s First Leopard Safari Opens at Bannerghatta: At the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) – Bengaluru, South India’s first and biggest leopard tour was just opened by the Environment Minister, Eshwar Khandre. This important event is a turning point in India’s attempts to protect wildlife and promote wildlife .

1. Paraguay becomes 100th member of International Solar Alliance: Paraguay has become the 100th country to join the International Solar Alliance (ISA) as a full member. The South American nation officially handed over its Instrument of Ratification to the ISA in New Delhi. The ISA, co-founded by India and France during the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, aims to promote solar energy deployment worldwide. It serves as a collaborative platform for member countries to increase energy access, ensure energy security, and drive the transition towards sustainable energy sources. The alliance has gained significant traction since its inception, with 119 countries now signatories to the ISA Framework Agreement. Of these, 100 have completed the ratification process to become full members, with Spain joining as the 99th member in May this year.

 

2. 27 June – MSME Day: Micro Small Medium Enterprise (MSME) Day is observed every year on 27 June. The day highlights the contribution of the MSME sector to a country’s economic development and employment generation. Theme 2024 – MSMEs and the SDG. On 6 April 2017, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to observe 27 June as the Micro Small Medium Enterprise (MSME) Day. The first MSME Day was observed on 27 June 2017. According to the United Nations, MSMEs account for 90% of businesses, 60 to 70% of employment, and 50% of Gross Domestic Product worldwide.

 

3. Paraguay Becomes 100th Member of International Solar Alliance: Paraguay is the 100th country to become a full member of the International Solar Alliance. 1. Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani as the next Vice Chief of Army Staff: Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani is set to be the next Vice Chief of Army Staff with the government clearing his appointment to the post. The officer, who is presently helming the Army’s Central Command, will succeed Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi. Lt Gen Dwivedi, currently serving as the Vice Chief, will be the next Chief of the Army Staff when incumbent Gen Manoj Pande retires on June 30. Lt Gen Subramani has a distinguished and illustrious military career spanning more than 37 years. Lt Gen Subramani has the distinction of commanding a battalion during ‘Operation Rhino’ in Assam, an infantry brigade along the International Boundary with Pakistan and a ‘Black Cat’ division in Northeast India.

 

2. Tapan Kumar Deka gets one-year extension as IB Chief: Counter-terrorism expert IPS Tapan Kumar Deka has been given an extension as Intelligence Bureau chief for one year beyond June 30, 2024. Deka, known for his pivotal role in combating northeast insurgency and dismantling the Indian Mujahideen. He is an 1988 batch Officer for Himachal Pradesh. During his tenure as IB chief, Deka took the fight to the left-wing extremists in Central India with the Maoists now confined to Bastar district of Chhattisgarh. A highly competent, Deka has served in the US and was the main force behind India taking down the Pak-sponsored Indian Mujahideen group. He has investigated the 26/11 Mumbai massacre and brought culprits to justice.

1. Indian clinches 11 Medals at Under-17 Asian Wrestling Championships in Amman: India concluded their campaign at the Under-17 Asian Wrestling Championships in Amman, Jordan, on a resounding note. The young Indian contingent clinched a total of 11 medals, including four gold, two silver, and five bronze medals. Women wrestlers grabbed all four gold medals. Dipanshi in 46 kg, Muskan in 53 kg, Rajnita in 61 kg, and Mansi Lather in 69 kg delivered stellar performances in their respective weight categories to clinch the yellow metal. Raja Bala had to settle for a silver in the 40 kg category, despite her valiant efforts. On the men’s front, Samarth Gajanan Mhakave bagged a silver medal in the fiercely contested 55 kg category. S&P Global Ratings retains India’s growth forecast for FY25 at 6.8%: The S&P Global Ratings retained its growth forecast for India at 8 per cent for FY25, citing high interest rates and lower fiscal boost tempering demand in the non-agricultural sectors. For FY26 and FY27, S&P projected India’s economy to grow at 6.9 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively. The rating agency expects the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to reduce its policy rate to 6 per cent in the current financial year from 6.5 per cent at present. Additionally, it anticipates further cuts in the lending rate to 5.5 per cent and 5.25 per cent in 2025-26 and 2026-27, respectively.

1. JP Nadda launches National STOP Diarrhoea Campaign 2024: Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda has launched the National STOP Diarrhoea Campaign 2024 at a function in New Delhi. He launched the campaign by distributing oral rehydration salts (ORS) and zinc tablets to children in presence of Minister of States for Health Anupriya Patel and Patraprao Jadhav. The two-month campaign will begin from the 1st of July and continue till the 31st of August. The goal behind the STOP Diarrhoea Campaign is to attain zero child deaths due to childhood diarrhoea. While the existing diarrhoea strategy entailed a two-week campaign, the new strategy involved a two-month long campaign with the pre-positioning of two ORS packets and zinc as a co-packaging for under-5 children.

 

2. Kerala’s Kozhikode becomes India’s first UNESCO ‘City of Literature’: Kozhikode in north Kerala, known for its rich cultural heritage, was officially declared as India’s first UNESCO ‘City of Literature’. The state government also announced that from coming year, June 23 will be celebrated as the ‘City of Literature’ Day of Kozhikode. In October 2023, Kozhikode had earned a place in the ‘Literature’ category of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). While Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh made it to the coveted list in the ‘Music’ category, Kozhikode earned the place in the ‘Literature’ category.

 

3. Om Birla elected as the speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha: A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, Om Birla was re-elected speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. He was elected by voice vote after the opposition party did not press for the counting of votes. Om Birla was also the speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. Om Birla is the 17th person to be elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. According to Article 93 of the constitution, members of the Lok Sabha are to elect a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker from among the members of the House. The Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected by a simple majority.

 

4. Aditya Birla AMC reappointed A Balasubramanian as MD & CEO for 3 years: Aditya Birla Sun Life Asset Management Company (ABSLAMC) has reappointed A Balasubramanian as its Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for three years, effective from July 25, 2024. Balasubramanian, who brings over three decades of extensive experience, has been associated with ABSLAMC since 1995. Prior to assuming the role of CEO in 2009, he served as Chief Investment Officer from 2006 to 2009. Under his leadership, ABSLAMC currently oversees assets under management exceeding Rs 3.20 lakh crore.

1. Srinagar gets tag of ‘World Craft City’, fourth from country: Srinagar has become the fourth Indian city to be recognised as a ‘World Craft City’ by the World Craft Council (WCC), three years after it was designated as part of the UNESCO Creative City Network (UCCN) for crafts and folk arts. Jaipur, Malappuram and Mysore are the other Indian cities that have previously been recognised as World Craft Cities. As of now, at least 10 different forms of craftsmanship survive in Srinagar and its suburbs, including papier-mâché, walnut wood carving, carpets, Sozni embroidery and Pashmina and Kani shawls.

 

2. Paraguay becomes 100th member of International Solar Alliance: Paraguay has become the 100th country to join the International Solar Alliance (ISA) as a full member. The South American nation officially handed over its Instrument of Ratification to the ISA in New Delhi. The ISA, co-founded by India and France during the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, aims to promote solar energy deployment worldwide. It serves as a collaborative platform for member countries to increase energy access, ensure energy security, and drive the transition towards sustainable energy sources.

 

3. 26 June – International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking: International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed every year on 26 June. This day is popularly known as World Drug Day. Objective – To raise awareness about the global fight against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking. Theme 2024 – The evidence is clear: invest in prevention The United Nations established the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 7 December 1987.

 

4. 26 June – United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture: United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is celebrated every year on 26 June. The UN General Assembly proclaimed 26 June the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, with a view to the total eradication of torture and the effective functioning of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment generally known as the Torture Agreement, entered into force on June 26, 1987. This was a step towards recognising that torture is universally banned. Ten years later, on June 26, 1997, the United Nations General Assembly formally designated the day as the International Day.

1. Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani as the next Vice Chief of Army Staff: Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani is set to be the next Vice Chief of Army Staff with the government clearing his appointment to the post. The officer, who is presently helming the Army’s Central Command, will succeed Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi. Lt Gen Dwivedi, currently serving as the Vice Chief, will be the next Chief of the Army Staff when incumbent Gen Manoj Pande retires on June 30. Lt Gen Subramani has a distinguished and illustrious military career spanning more than 37 years. Lt Gen Subramani has the distinction of commanding a battalion during ‘Operation Rhino’ in Assam, an infantry brigade along the International Boundary with Pakistan and a ‘Black Cat’ division in Northeast India. He also commanded Uttar Bharat Area in 2020 and the premier Kharga Corps at Ambala.

1. Indian clinches 11 Medals at Under-17 Asian Wrestling Championships in Amman: India concluded their campaign at the Under-17 Asian Wrestling Championships in Amman, Jordan, on a resounding note. The young Indian contingent clinched a total of 11 medals, including four gold, two silver, and five bronze medals. Women wrestlers grabbed all four gold medals. Dipanshi in 46 kg, Muskan in 53 kg, Rajnita in 61 kg, and Mansi Lather in 69 kg delivered stellar performances in their respective weight categories to clinch the yellow metal. Raja Bala had to settle for a silver in the 40 kg category, despite her valiant efforts. On the men’s front, Samarth Gajanan Mhakave bagged a silver medal in the fiercely contested 55 kg category. While Akash in 65 kg, Sachin Kumar in 71 kg, Bikash Kacchap in 48 kg, Tushar Tukaram Patil in 60 kg, and Ronak in 110 kg showcased their prowess by clinching bronze medals.

1. S&P Global Ratings retains India’s growth forecast for FY25 at 6.8%: The S&P Global Ratings retained its growth forecast for India at 8 per cent for FY25, citing high interest rates and lower fiscal boost tempering demand in the non-agricultural sectors. For FY26 and FY27, S&P projected India’s economy to grow at 6.9 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively. The rating agency expects the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to reduce its policy rate to 6 per cent in the current financial year from 6.5 per cent at present. Additionally, it anticipates further cuts in the lending rate to 5.5 per cent and 5.25 per cent in 2025-26 and 2026-27, respectively.

 

2. 1. Dr Radhakrishnan to head government committee on restructuring NTA: The Union Ministry of Education has set up seven members committee headed by the former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), K Radhakrishnan to review and suggest reform in the examination process. The government has taken this step after the controversy over a paper leak at the undergraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) exam 2024 and the postponement of NET-UGC exams. The committee consists of seven eminent people. It will be headed by former ISRO chairman Koppillil Radhakrishnan. The other members of the committee are Professor BJ Rao, Professor Ramamurthy K, Dr Randeep Guleria, Pankaj Bansal, Professor Aditya Mittal and Govind Jaiswal, Joint Secretary, Union Ministry of Education.

 

2. India’s first pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification in Jharkhand: The Ministry of Coal via Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) has initiated India’s first pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) at the Kasta coal block in Jamtara District, Jharkhand. This first ever groundbreaking initiative aims to revolutionize the coal industry by using in-situ coal gasification to convert it into valuable gases such as methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. These gases can be utilized to produce synthetic natural gas, chemical feedstocks for fuels, fertilizers, explosives, and other industrial applications.

 

3. UP to establish world’s first Asian King Vulture Conservation & Breeding Centre in Maharajganj: Uttar Pradesh government will establish the world’s first conservation and breeding centre for Asian king vultures or red-headed vultures in Maharajganj. The facility will improve the population of critically endangered species listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list since 2007. The centre is named Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre. The centre aims to ensure the good health of growing vultures and provide them with a pair. Once a female lays an egg, the pair will be left free in their natural environment.

 

4. HDFC ERGO General Insurance elevates Anuj Tyagi as MD and CEO: Anuj Tyagi has been appointed as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HDFC ERGO General Insurance  Tyagi will succeed Ritesh Kumar effective July 1. Tyagi has been with the company since 2008, holding various functions during his tenure. He was elevated as joint managing director in April 2023.

 

5. Mrinal Kr Das appointed as Director in Department of Consumer Affairs: Mrinal Kumar Das (IRS) has been appointed as the Director in the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Das has been selected for the appointment to the said post under the Central Staffing Scheme (CSS) for a period of five years from the date of taking over charge of the post or until further orders, whichever event takes place earlier. Das is an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of 2007 batch. He was recommended for the Central deputation by the Department of Revenue.

6. Maharashtra Governor releases book titled ‘Gateways to the Sea’: The Governor of Maharashtra Ramesh Bais released a book titled ‘Gateways to the Sea: Historic Ports and Docks of Mumbai Region’ at Raj Bhavan Mumbai. The book has been published by the Publications Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, GoI. It comprises of 18 articles by renowned authors, compiled by the Maritime Mumbai Museum Society (MMMS) The publication of this book is an important milestone in creating awareness about the ancient ports stated above and it also covers the development of modern ports and docks of Mumbai including Mazagon Dock, Mumbai Port, Bombay Dock, Sassoon Dock and Ferry Wharf also known as Bhaucha Dhakka.

Sayeed has been re-elected for the second term on the board of Sa-Dhan at the Association’s Annual General Body meeting. 2. 24 June – International Day of Women in Diplomacy: International Day of Women in Diplomacy is celebrated on June 24 every year to highlight the contribution of women to diplomacy – those who are breaking barriers and doing commendable jobs in this field. Theme 2024 – Women’s Leadership in Multilateral Diplomacy This year, the event to mark the International Day of Women in Diplomacy at the United Nations Headquarters in New York brings together high-level government officials, diplomats, senior representatives of the UN system and other stakeholders. The event aims to facilitate interactive discussions and exchanges on the contributions, challenges and opportunities for women in diplomacy to catalyse change and transformation in multilateral affairs, the UN website stated.

 

3. 25 June – International Day of the Seafarer: International Day of the Seafarer is celebrated every year on 25 June. This special day was created by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to recognize the important role seafarers play in our daily lives and the global economy. The Day of the Seafarer was established during an important meeting in Manila in 2010. At this meeting, countries agreed on new standards for training seafarers (called the STCW Convention). The resolution that created this day encourages everyone involved in shipping – from governments to companies – to promote the Day of the Seafarer and find meaningful ways to celebrate it.

1. Indian Army opened Khalubar War Memorial to tourists in Ladakh: In Ladakh, as a tribute to the heroes of the Kargil War, the Indian Army has opened the Khalubar War Memorial to tourists.

This opening ceremony was part of the ‘Forever in Operations’ Division’s Pre-Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations as this year, the country will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26 July. Located in the renowned Aryan Valley this memorial commemorates the bravery and sacrifices of soldiers who fought to reclaim the valley during the war. Khalubar, a serene valley near the border, became a focal point during the Kargil War when enemy forces captured it. The area was recaptured by the valiant efforts of Indian soldiers, including Captain Manoj Pandey, whose heroic actions are now immortalized at the memorial.

Sreeja Akula creates history by winning WTT Contender singles title: Sreeja Akula of Hyderabad became the first Indian table tennis player to win a WTT (World Table Tennis) Contender Women’s single title. Sreeja Akula won both the women’s singles and doubles titles at the WTT Contender Lagos 2024 event. The USD 80,000 prize money WTT Contender Lagos 2024 was held at the Sir Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall in Lagos, Nigeria. Sreeja Akula, defeated the 16-year-old Yijie Ding of China 4-1 (10-12,11-9,11-6,11-8,11-6) in the final of the WTT Contender Lagos 2024 to win her first WTT Contender title.

Universal Sompo settles ₹8 crore claims under Ayushman Bharat in 4 months: Universal Sompo General Insurance Company has provided cashless claims approval of ₹8.03 crore for over 8,170 hospital admissions under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in the Union Territory Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. The scheme has become operational since February 1 and the cashless approvals have been made over the past 142 days. This reflects the scheme’s efficiency and the substantial financial relief to families. 1. ‘Golden Thread’ bags the prestigious Golden Conch award at 18th MIFF 2024: The Indian film ‘The Golden Thread’, directed by Nistha Jain bagged the coveted Golden Conch award for the Best Documentary at MIFF 2024. The film is both an homage to and an observation of the how last vestiges of the Industrial Revolution were impacted by the forces of economic change. The film, adjudged as the best documentary of the South Asia’s oldest and largest film festival for non-fiction, not only illustrates the relationship of man to machine but also questions how capitalism values man as equal only to his labor. Earlier noted wildlife filmmaker Subbiah Nallamuthu was conferred with the 18th V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award at the inauguration of the 18th MIFF 2024. The 18th biennial MIFF 2024 was organised by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and executed by the National Film Development Corporation at Mumbai.
