1. Govt announces 1-billion-dollar fund for creators’ economy, ahead of WAVES 2025: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a 1-billion-dollar fund for the creator’s economy as part of the World Audio-Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025.The event to be held in Mumbai from May 1 to 4, will give creators community a platform to create high value content.The session, organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, sought to engage the international community ahead of the WAVES 2025.Vaishnaw also informed that the first Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) will be established near Film City in Goregaon, Mumbai.

 

2. R. Patil inaugurates Water Sustainability Conference 2025: The Bureau of Water Use Efficiency (BWUE) under the National Water Mission (NWM), Ministry of Jal Shakti, in association with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), organized a one-day conference titled “Water Sustainability Conference 2025”, with a focus on Industrial Water Use Efficiency.The conference was held at the NDMC Convention Centre, Palika Kendra, Sansad Marg, New Delhi.The event was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Jal Shakti, C R Patil, who highlighted the Government’s commitment towards promoting industrial water use efficiency through innovative technologies and strategic frameworks.The workshop brought together various Ministries, Organisations, Policymakers, Industry Leaders, Experts, and Stakeholders to deliberate on strategies and technological advancements to enhance water use efficiency in the industrial sector.

 

3. Mudumal Menhirs: The Mudumal Megalithic Menhirs have been added to India’s tentative list of Unesco World Heritage Sites. Telangana currently has only one Unesco World Heritage Site, the Ramappa Temple, added in 2021. If approved, the Mudumal menhirs could become the state’s second World Heritage Site. Menhirs are large upright stones, typically tapered at the top. They are man-made, sculpted, and placed by humans. The term ‘menhir’ originates from the Brittonic words for stone and long. The largest menhir, the Grand Menhir Brisé in France, once stood at 20.6 metres tall.

1. India, Mauritius ink 8 MoUs to bolster strategic, economic relations: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius witnessed the signing of multiple MoUs aimed at enhancing strategic cooperation and economic collaboration between the two nations.These agreements covered areas such as currency settlement, water management, and shipping information sharing, further deepening bilateral ties.Among the key agreements was an MoU between the Central Bank of Mauritius and the Reserve Bank of India on a Local Currency Settlement System, facilitating smoother financial transactions.Additionally, a Credit Facility Agreement was signed between the Government of Mauritius and the State Bank of India to finance projects under the Central Water Authority’s Pipe Replacement Programme.In the financial sector, an MoU was signed between the Financial Crimes Commission of Mauritius and India’s Enforcement Directorate to bolster cooperation in combating financial crimes.

 

2. India and Chile 1st JWG meeting on Agriculture held: The 1st Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on Agriculture was held between India and Chile in virtual mode.The meeting was co-chaired by Ajeet Kumar Sahu, Joint Secretary (IC), Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfares and Gabriel Layseca, Director of the Department of International Affairs, Bureau of Agricultural Studies and Policies (ODEPA).Both countries, with their rich experience in agriculture, have the potential to complement each other in boosting agricultural productivity, promoting rural development, and improving farmers’ welfare.

 

3. PM Modi Hands Over Overseas Citizen Card To Mauritius Counterpart: Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to Mauritius’ Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and his wife, Veena Ramgoolam, during a special event.Earlier in the day, PM Modi also handed OCI cards to Mauritius’ President Dharambeer Gokhool and First Lady Vrinda Gokhool. This gesture highlights India’s strong ties with Mauritius and its commitment to the Indian-origin community there.Mauritius has a significant Indian presence, with 22,188 Indian nationals and 13,198 OCI card holders.The OCI card allows holders to live, work, and study in India without a visa, making it easier for them to stay connected with their Indian roots.

 

4. India Participates in 353rd Governing Body Meeting of International Labour Organisation in Geneva: The 353rd Governing Body meeting of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) was held in Geneva, Switzerland.The meeting brings together the tripartite constituents of ILO i.e. representatives from governments, workers, and employers, to discuss crucial matters relating to the world of work and the governance of ILO.India extended its support to ILO on the organization of the UN led Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Qatar later this year, as it aims at reinforcing the social dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Social Development.India’s inspiring progress in promoting social justice and development was highlighted, as India has doubled its social protection coverage to 48.8 percent, increasing the average global social protection coverage by over 5 percent.

Jharkhand crowned 15th Hockey India Senior Women National Champion: Hockey Jharkhand defeated the defending champion Hockey Haryana in the final to win the 15th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2025.The final match was played at the Tau Devi Lal Complex in Panchkula, Haryana.Hockey Mizoram defeated Hockey Maharashtra to take the third spot with Hockey Maharashtra at the fourth position.Hockey India organised the 15th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2025 at Tau Devi Lal Complex in Panchkula, Haryana.

The teams were divided into four groups, with the top team from each group qualified for the quarter finals.

Google brings Gemma 3 open model to compete with Meta’s Llama, DeepSeek V3: Google has expanded its open model’s line-up by announcing the next-generation Gemma AI model, the Gemma 3.Gemma 3 is “built from the same research and technology that powers” the Gemini 2.0 models. It’s available in 1B, 4B, 12B, and 27B sizes.The company has claimed to outperform Llama-405B, DeepSeek-V3 and o3-mini models on the benchmarking platform LMArena.

Valueattics Reinsurance set to become India’s first private reinsurer: IRDAI has approved the first reinsurance licence to a private player, Valueattics Reinsurance, backed by Prem Watsa and Kamesh Goyal.They are also the promoters of Go Digit General Insurance and Go Digit Life Insurance.Valueattics Reinsurance is owned by Oben Ventures LLP, promoted by Goyal, and FAL Corporation, backed by Watsa with Fairfax Financial Holdings.

 

2. India to become world’s third-largest economy by 2028: Morgan Stanley: India will be the world’s third-largest economy by 2028 as it becomes the world’s most sought-after consumer market and gains share in global output, driven by macro stability influenced policy and better infrastructure, Morgan Stanley said.In 2028, India will overtake Germany as its economy will expand to $5.7 trillion. From a $3.5 trillion economy in 2023, the Indian economy is projected to expand to $4.7 trillion in 2026, which will make it the fourth largest in the world behind the US, China and Germany.According to Morgan Stanley, India was the 12th largest economy in the world in 1990, slipped to 13th position in 2000 before rising to 9th rank in 2020 and 5th in 2023.

YES Bank launches seamless GST payment facility for businesses and individuals: Private sector lender YES Bank Ltd has introduced a Goods and Services Tax (GST) payment facility, further expanding its digital banking services.The initiative, authorised by the Government of India, enables businesses and individuals to make GST payments efficiently through YES BANK’s NetBanking platform and branch network.Through direct integration with the GST portal, this initiative enables corporates and sole proprietor businesses to meet their tax obligations swiftly and securely using YES BANK’s Retail and Corporate Internet Banking platforms, as well as any of its extensive branch network.MD and CEO of Yes Bank- Prashant Kumar

RBI awarded Digital Transformation Award 2025 for digital initiatives: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been selected for the Digital Transformation Award 2025 by Central Banking at London in UK.The central bank was awarded for its digital initiatives named Pravaah and Sarthi, which were developed by its in-house developer team.The awards committee noted how these digital initiatives have reduced the use of paper-based submissions, thus transforming RBI’s internal and external processes.Sarthi, launched in January 2023, digitised RBI’s internal workflows, enabling its employees to store and share documents securely, improving record management, and increasing the options for data analysis through reports and dashboards.Launched in May 2024 as Pravaah, a digitised means was created for external users to submit regulatory applications to the RBI.Pravaah has so far allowed more than 70 different regulatory applications to be digitised, supporting the work of nine RBI departments.

1. Govt introduces third edition of PM-YUVA for aspiring writers: The Ministry of Education has launched the third edition of the Prime Minister’s Scheme for Mentoring Young Authors (PM-YUVA 3.0).The initiative aims to train young authors under the age of 30 to promote reading, writing, and book culture in India. The program provides mentorship and publishing opportunities to enhance Indian literature on a global platform.PM-YUVA 3.0 builds on the participation of young authors in 22 Indian languages and English in its previous editions. It focuses on three themes: the role of the Indian diaspora in nation-building, the Indian Knowledge System, and the makers of modern India from 1950 to 2025.The National Book Trust, India, will oversee the implementation of PM-YUVA 3.0. The selected manuscripts will be published and translated into multiple Indian languages to encourage literary exchange.

 

2. Jio Partners with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Internet to India: Mukesh Ambani-led Jio Platforms Limited signed a deal with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s internet services to India, a day after rival Bharti Airtel inked a similar pact.This agreement, which is subject to SpaceX receiving its own authorisations to sell Starlink in India, enables Jio and SpaceX to explore how Starlink can extend Jio’s offerings and how Jio can complement SpaceX’s direct offerings to consumers and businesses.Under this partnership, Jio’s extensive presence as the world’s largest mobile operator by data traffic and Starlink’s leadership in low Earth orbit satellite technology will be utilized to provide reliable broadband connectivity across India, including its most remote and rural areas.

 

3. Water Contamination Crisis in India: Recently, a parliamentary committee raised alarms about  water contamination across India. The Standing Committee on Water Resources reported that over 11,000 habitations in multiple states lack adequate measures to address pollutants like iron, nitrate, and heavy metals. This situation poses health risks to the affected populations. The report calls for immediate and long-term solutions to ensure safe drinking water. The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation plans to shift from a department-based approach to a service delivery model. This model emphasises community participation, known as “Jan Bhagidhari.” The government aims to sign memorandums of understanding with states to ensure reliable water service delivery.

1. UN chief launched ‘UN80 Initiative’ to improve efficiencies amid shrinking resources, uncertainty: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres launched the ‘UN80 Initiative’ to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness within the 80-year-old organization, addressing concerns over dwindling resources and a liquidity crisis in an uncertain global environment.The initiative will focus on identifying quick efficiency improvements, reviewing the growing number of mandates from member states, and conducting a strategic assessment of structural changes and program realignment across the UN system.Guterres has appointed a dedicated internal task force led by Under-Secretary-General Guy Ryder and composed of principals representing the entire UN system.The UN General Assembly approved a USD 3.72 billion budget for the United Nations for 2025. The US is the single largest financial contributor to the UN, paying 22% of the regular budget and 27% of the peacekeeping budget.

 

2. Taxonomic Revision of the Javan Rhino: Recent studies have brought into light findings regarding the Javan rhinoceros, a critically endangered species. Researchers suggest that this rhino should be placed in a new genus, Eurhinoceros, due to distinct morphological and ecological traits. This revision puts stress on the need for a deeper understanding of its evolutionary history and conservation status. The Javan and Indian rhinos diverged not due to geographical isolation but through niche partitioning. This concept refers to the way both species developed distinct ecological niches, minimising competition. The Javan rhino evolved as a browser, primarily consuming leaves and twigs. In contrast, the Indian rhino became a grazer, focusing on grasses. This divergence has led to notable differences in skull shape and dentition.

 

3. Chagos Archipelago: The Chagos Archipelago comprises over 60 islands, with Diego Garcia being the largest. Initially uninhabited, Chagos saw its first permanent settlements in the 18th century. The French claimed the islands in the 1700s, and later, British control was established after the Napoleonic Wars. The islands were used for plantations, relying on slave and indentured labour. In 1965, the UK created the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), which included Chagos. This move was part of a broader strategy to maintain military presence in the Indian Ocean during the Cold War. The UK paid Mauritius £3 million for the detachment of Chagos.

1. Successfully test fires air-to-air Astra missile by Tejas fighter jet: The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has successfully conducted the test launch of India’s homegrown Astra, a Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM), from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) AF MK1 prototype. The test was carried out off the coast of Chandipur, Odisha.Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Astra missile is designed to engage targets over 100 kilometers away.

 

2. India’s Role in Combating Terror Financing: Recently, India reaffirmed its commitment to combat terrorism at the 4th ‘No Money for Terror’ Conference. The nation emphasised the importance of global unity against terrorism. India brought into light the evolving complexities in terror financing due to advancements in digital technology. This has made tracking the flow of funds more challenging. Terror financing poses threats to global security. The emergence of new technologies has complicated the methods and channels for transferring funds. Cross-border linkages have increased, making it difficult for nations to combat terrorism effectively.

 

3. India-Bangladesh Naval Exercise Bongosagar 2025: The India-Bangladesh Naval Exercise Bongosagar 2025 took place in March 2025 in the Bay of Bengal. This event marked step in strengthening the bilateral military relationship between India and Bangladesh. The exercise aimed to enhance maritime security through collaborative operations and interoperability between the two navies. INS Ranvir, a destroyer from the Indian Navy, and BNS Abu Ubaidah, a frigate from the Bangladesh Navy, were the main vessels involved. The primary goal of Bongosagar 2025 was to improve joint operational capabilities. This included enhancing coordination for maritime security challenges. The exercise aimed to facilitate seamless operations between the Indian Navy and the Bangladesh Navy.

1. Space De-docking Mission: On January 16, 2025, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved milestone in space exploration by successfully docking two satellites, SDX01 and SDX02. Following this, on January 30, ISRO completed a complex de-docking process. This achievement marks India’s entry into an elite group of countries capable of such advanced space operations. De-docking is not just about unhooking. It involves careful disengagement of latches and hooks. This process must be executed remotely. The spacecraft may have a pressurised tunnel that needs careful decompression. Precise low-force separation is critical.

1. FM Nirmala Sitharaman launched PM Internship Scheme app: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has launched the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) app, a move which will make it easier for youngsters to apply for the programme.The FM also launched the first facilitation centre for the Internship Scheme being set up in Kolkata by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).The centre is meant to provide assistance and guidance to the youth regarding the scheme.The app has been developed by Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG), a national agency by the Gujarat government. BISAG is also managing the internship portal at present.The CII will also set facilitation desks at its 47 Model Career Centres across the country.

 

2. Retail inflation at 7-month low of 3.6%: India’s retail inflation dipped to a seven-month low of 3.6% as food prices eased in February 2025, led by vegetables, pulses, and eggs. The annual change in consumer prices was 4.26% in January 2025.The increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures retail prices, has slowed for the fourth consecutive month and is now lower than the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) target inflation of 4%, increasing the likelihood of another 0.25% rate cut by the central bank next month.

 

3. RBI to issue ₹100 and ₹200 banknotes with new Governor’s signature: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon issue ₹100 and ₹200 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series bearing the signature of Shri Sanjay Malhotra, the newly appointed Governor.The design of these new banknotes will remain unchanged and will be identical to the existing ₹100 and ₹200 notes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. The introduction of these banknotes is a routine process following the appointment of a new RBI Governor.The central bank has also confirmed that all previously issued ₹100 and ₹200 denomination banknotes will continue to be legal tender. There is no impact on the validity of older banknotes in circulation.

Ayushman Bharat scheme expands to Delhi, millions to get Rs 5 lakh cover: The Delhi government has signed an MoU with the National Health Authority (NHA) to implement the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).With this move, Delhi became the 35th state/UT to adopt the flagship healthcare scheme. West Bengal is the only state yet to implement AB-PMJAY.

 

2. What is AB-PMJAY?: The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is the world’s largest government-funded health insurance scheme.It provides Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospital care to nearly 550 million beneficiaries from 123.7 million economically weaker families, covering the bottom 40 per cent of India’s population.

 

3. Arun Mammen elected as new ATMA chairman: Arun Mammen, Vice Chairman & Managing Director of MRF Ltd, has been elected as the new Chairman of Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA), the national industry body for the automotive tyre sector in India.Hiroshi Yoshizane, Managing Director of Bridgestone India, is the new Vice Chairman of ATMA.Founded in 1975, ATMA represents India’s ₹90,000 crore (approximately US$11 billion) automotive tyre industry.Its members include six leading tyre manufacturers—Apollo, Bridgestone India, Ceat, Goodyear India, JK Tyre, and MRF—who collectively account for over 90% of the country’s tyre production.

 

4. N G Subramaniam appointed as chairman of Tata Communications board: Tata Communications has appointed N Ganapathy Subramaniam as the chairman of the board of directors of the company.NGS has been part of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the IT major, for 40 years. He stepped down from TCS in May 2024 as the chief operating officer and executive director.

India signs MoU with Armenia for cooperation in field of medical products regulation: India has signed an MoU with Armenia for cooperation in the field of medical products regulation.The MoU was signed in the presence of External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar and Foreign Minister of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan in Delhi.The two ministers agreed to explore cooperation in digital technologies and pharmaceuticals. They also reviewed the whole range of growing India-Armenia bilateral cooperation including in the areas of political exchanges, trade, economics, connectivity, education, culture, and people-to-people contacts.The two nations also signed an MoU on Cooperation between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and the Diplomatic School of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia.

2. ICC takes custody of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in crimes against humanity case: Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was turned over to the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC), following his arrest on a warrant accusing him of crimes against humanity over deadly anti-drugs crackdowns he oversaw while in office.The 79-year-old former president arrived in the Netherlands on a flight from Manila, where he was arrested on an ICC request.

Mumbai Indians clinch second Women’s Premier League title: In the Women’s Premier League cricket summit clash, Mumbai Indians clinched their second title as Delhi Capitals choked for the third time in succession.In the summit clash played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Harmanpreet Kaur’s scintillating 44-ball 66 powered Mumbai Indians to a fighting 149 for the loss of 7 wickets.In reply, Delhi Capitals batters put undue pressure on themselves to finish at 141 for 9 despite late surge from Marizanne Kapp and teenager Niki Prasad.Harmanpreet Kaur was awarded player of the match for her knock. Jio Partners with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Internet to India: Mukesh Ambani-led Jio Platforms Limited signed a deal with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s internet services to India, a day after rival Bharti Airtel inked a similar pact.This agreement, which is subject to SpaceX receiving its own authorisations to sell Starlink in India, enables Jio and SpaceX to explore how Starlink can extend Jio’s offerings and how Jio can complement SpaceX’s direct offerings to consumers and businesses.Under this partnership, Jio’s extensive presence as the world’s largest mobile operator by data traffic and Starlink’s leadership in low Earth orbit satellite technology will be utilized to provide reliable broadband connectivity across India, including its most remote and rural areas.

Bharti Airtel transfers 69.94% stake in Airtel Payments bank to Airtel: Bharti Airtel has transferred its entire 69.94 per cent stake in Airtel Payments Bank to wholly-owned subsidiary Airtel Limited.The shareholding of 69.94 per cent, held by Bharti Airtel Limited in Airtel Payments Bank Limited, is being transferred to the Company’s wholly-owned subsidiary (i.e. Airtel Limited), post receiving requisite regulatory and corporate approvals.

 

2. RBI to issue ₹100 and ₹200 banknotes with new Governor’s signature: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon issue ₹100 and ₹200 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series bearing the signature of Shri Sanjay Malhotra, the newly appointed Governor.The design of these new banknotes will remain unchanged and will be identical to the existing ₹100 and ₹200 notes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. The introduction of these banknotes is a routine process following the appointment of a new RBI Governor.The central bank has also confirmed that all previously issued ₹100 and ₹200 denomination banknotes will continue to be legal tender. There is no impact on the validity of older banknotes in circulation.

Centre bans Awami Action Committee, J&K Ittihadul Muslimeen for 5 years: The Awami Action Committee (AAC), headed by Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM), led by Shia leader Masroor Abbas Ansari, were banned by the Centre for their alleged anti-national activities, supporting terrorism and fuelling secessionist activities.Union Home Ministry banned Awami Action Committee (AAC) and Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) as an unlawful association and banned both the organisations with immediate effect for a period of five years.

 

2. Department of Biotechnology and Assam Govt Sign Historic MoU for Centre-State Partnership: The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Government of Assam signed a landmark MoU under the BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) Policy.This Centre-State partnership is the first of its kind under the BioE3 framework and aims to accelerate high-performance biomanufacturing while fostering a sustainable biotechnology ecosystem in Assam.The MoU signing is a culmination of extensive consultations, high-level meetings, and collaborative efforts made by the DBT and the Government of Assam.The BioE3 Policy, approved by the Union Cabinet on 24th August 2024, envisages to establish India as a global leader in bio-based innovations, emphasizing sustainable biomanufacturing across various thematic areas including bio-based chemicals, APIs, biopolymers, enzymes, climate-resilient agriculture, functional foods, smart proteins, carbon capture& utilization, precision biotherapeutics (cell & gene therapy, mRNA therapeutics & monoclonal antibody), as well as futuristic marine and space research.

 

3. 4. ‘Gyan Bharatam Mission,’ a visionary initiative aimed at expanding access to India’s vast repository of knowledge: The National Archives of India (NAI) celebrated its 135th Foundation Day on 11th March 2025 with an exhibition titled “Indian Heritage through Architecture.” Union Minister of Culture & Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has inaugurated the exhibition.The exhibition showcased India’s rich cultural heritage as reflected in its diverse architectural marvels, spanning thousands of years and encompassing a variety of styles, influences, and historical periods.From the ancient Indus Valley Civilization to medieval temples, Mughal monuments, and colonial-era structures, Indian architecture narrates the nation’s spiritual, cultural, and historical evolution.On this occasion, the National Archives of India also launched a book titled ‘Thumb Printed: Champaran, Indigo Peasants Speak to Gandhi Volume III.’ This volume contains 423 testimonies, including 143 principal testators, among whom five were women, 11 were minors, 76 signed the documents, and four had no signature or thumb impression.

ICC takes custody of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in crimes against humanity case: Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was turned over to the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC), following his arrest on a warrant accusing him of crimes against humanity over deadly anti-drugs crackdowns he oversaw while in office.The 79-year-old former president arrived in the Netherlands on a flight from Manila, where he was arrested on an ICC request.

 

2. UN chief launched ‘UN80 Initiative’ to improve efficiencies amid shrinking resources, uncertainty : UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres launched the ‘UN80 Initiative’ to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness within the 80-year-old organization, addressing concerns over dwindling resources and a liquidity crisis in an uncertain global environment.The initiative will focus on identifying quick efficiency improvements, reviewing the growing number of mandates from member states, and conducting a strategic assessment of structural changes and program realignment across the UN system.Guterres has appointed a dedicated internal task force led by Under-Secretary-General Guy Ryder and composed of principals representing the entire UN system.The UN General Assembly approved a USD 3.72 billion budget for the United Nations for 2025. The US is the single largest financial contributor to the UN, paying 22% of the regular budget and 27% of the peacekeeping budget.The approved budget for UN Peacekeeping operations for the fiscal year 1 July 2024 – 30 June 2025 is USD 5.6 billion and at 26.95%, the US is the largest contributor to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

 

3. 14 March – Pi Day: Pi Day is celebrated annually on March 14, honours the mathematical constant Pi, which is approximately 3.14.The date, when written as 3/14, mirrors the first three digits of Pi, making it a fitting day for mathematicians and numerophiles to celebrate this important number.In 1988, physicist Larry Shaw first recognized Pi Day. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives officially designated March 14 as Pi Day.Later, in 2019, UNESCO declared Pi Day as the “International Day of Mathematics” during its general conference.Albert Einstein, the renowned physicist behind the “General Theory of Relativity,” was born on Pi Day in 1879. Tejas fighter jet successfully test fires air-to-air Astra missile: The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has successfully conducted the test launch of India’s homegrown Astra, a Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM), from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) AF MK1 prototype. The test was carried out off the coast of Chandipur, Odisha.Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Astra missile is designed to engage targets over 100 kilometers away.

Mumbai Indians clinch second Women’s Premier League title: In the Women’s Premier League cricket summit clash, Mumbai Indians clinched their second title as Delhi Capitals choked for the third time in succession.In the summit clash played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Harmanpreet Kaur’s scintillating 44-ball 66 powered Mumbai Indians to a fighting 149 for the loss of 7 wickets.In reply, Delhi Capitals batters put undue pressure on themselves to finish at 141 for 9 despite late surge from Marizanne Kapp and teenager Niki Prasad.Harmanpreet Kaur was awarded player of the match for her knock. 1. Thematic Hubs: Recently, the Government of India announced the establishment of four thematic hubs to advance quantum computing technology. This initiative is part of the National Quantum Mission (NQM). The hubs will facilitate research and development in quantum computing, communication, and sensing. Quantum computers operate on principles of quantum mechanics. They use ‘qubits’ instead of traditional bits to process information. This allows them to perform calculations at speeds unattainable by classical computers. The mission aims to develop intermediate-scale quantum computers with increasing qubit capacities over the next eight years.

1. Finance Ministry notifies 10-year Zero Coupon Bond of Power Finance Corporation: The Finance Ministry has notified Zero Coupon Bond (ZCB) for Power Finance Corporation. The company can raise up to ₹10,000 crore.ZCB is an instrument that doesn’t pay interest during its term but instead is sold at a discount to its face value. When the bond matures, the investor receives the full-face value. There will be no periodic payment of interest.The bond will be issued with a discount of ₹49,546 for a face value of ₹1 lakh. In other words, the investor will pay ₹50,454 at the time of issuance, while get ₹1 lakh at maturity. These bonds will have the maturity value of 121 months or 10 years and one month.The notification has capped the number of bonds to be issued at 10 lakhs.

 

2. Retail inflation at 7-month low of 3.6%: India’s retail inflation dipped to a seven-month low of 3.6% as food prices eased in February 2025, led by vegetables, pulses, and eggs. The annual change in consumer prices was 4.26% in January 2025.The increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures retail prices, has slowed for the fourth consecutive month and is now lower than the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) target inflation of 4%, increasing the likelihood of another 0.25% rate cut by the central bank next month.

1. Odisha govt disburses ₹5,000 cr under Subhadra Yojana: The Odisha government has disbursed ₹5,000 crore under the Subhadra Yojana, benefiting 1.18 crore women across the state.The scheme aims to provide financial assistance to married women, enhancing their economic empowerment and social security.The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday in Odisha on September 17, 2024.

 

2. Maharashtra Disburses ₹17,000 Crore to 2.38 Crore Women Under Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana: The Maharashtra government disbursed over ₹17,000 crore in financial assistance to 2.38 crore women in a period of seven months since it launched the Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana last year.The State has launched Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana in June 2024, with the objectives to promote rehabilitation, economic development and empowerment of women and girls in the age group 21 to 65 years.Through the disbursement of ₹1,500 per month, the scheme intends to rehabilitate women economically and socially, to make them self-reliant, to promote their empowerment and to improve the health and nutritional status of women and children dependent on them.

 

3. Punjab Govt launches Project Hifazat to protect women: Punjab government has launched Project Hifazat to protect women from violence on the eve of International Women’s Day.The Project was launched by Punjab’s Social Security, Women, and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur in Chandigarh.The project aims to protect women and children from violence by providing immediate assistance from government departments. It provides a dedicated helpline number, ‘181’, which the victim can call for help.The initiative aims to improve the response mechanism of the government departments to report of violence against women through better inter-departmental coordination.

 

4. Soil Fertility Mapping in India: The Soil and Land Use Survey of India (SLUSI) is pioneering a transformative project aimed at enhancing  soil health through digital soil fertility mapping. This initiative utilises geo-spatial techniques and data from Soil Health Cards (SHC) to provide farmers with essential information for optimising agricultural practices. The project has successfully generated soil fertility maps for 351 villages across Maharashtra, marking step towards sustainable farming. Soil fertility maps provide farmers with location-specific data about nutrient availability. This enables targeted fertiliser application, reducing the risk of overuse or underuse. Consequently, farmers can maximise their economic returns while minimising input costs. By promoting balanced fertiliser use, the initiative supports sustainable agricultural practices.

1. India takes part in the 69th Session of UNCSW starting in New York: A delegation of the Government of India, led by Annpurna Devi, Union Minister of Women and Child Development (WCD), participated in the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which started on 10 March 2025 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.The session witnessed large-scale participation from all UN member states, intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, philanthropists, academia, civil society, women’s collectives, and UN agencies.At the 69th CSW session, the Minister held bilateral meetings with leaders including Ms Melrose Karminty (Sierra Leone), Mr Sodyq S. Safoev (Uzbekistan), Dr Vindhya Persaud (Guyana), and Ms Antonia Orellana Guarello (Chile) to strengthen cooperation on gender equality and social welfare.CSW is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality, the rights and the empowerment of women.

INS Imphal to participate in Mauritius National Day celebrations 2025: Indian Naval Ship (INS) Imphal arrived in Port Louis, Mauritius, ahead of the country’s 57th National Day celebrations on March 12, reinforcing strong maritime ties between the two nations.INS Imphal will contribute a marching contingent, a naval band, and a helicopter for the ceremonial flypast, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending as the Chief Guest.Commissioned in December 2023, INS Imphal is a Project 15B (Visakhapatnam-class) indigenous destroyer with advanced weaponry and technology, aligning with India’s Neighbourhood First policy and SAGAR vision for regional security.

 

2. Ministry of Defence signs ₹2,906 crore radar contract with BEL for the Indian Air Force: The Union Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a ₹2,906 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Ghaziabad for the procurement of Low-level Transportable Radar, LLTR (Ashwini).

The radar is indigenously designed and developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment, DRDO.The radar is capable of tracking aerial targets from high-speed fighter aircraft to slow moving targets such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and helicopters. Its acquisition will significantly enhance the operational preparedness of the Indian Air Force.

 

3. 10 March – CISF Raising Day: CISF Raising Day is celebrated every year on 10th March to mark the establishment of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in 1969.The day recognizes the contribution of CISF in safeguarding India’s critical infrastructure, public sector undertakings (PSUs), airports, metro networks, government buildings, and various strategic installations.

Department of Posts Signs MoU with FSID, IISC, for documentation of Technology Architecture for Digital Address DPI: Department of Posts has undertaken an initiative namely “Digital Address Code” aimed at establishing a digital public infrastructure for a standardized, geo-coded addressing system in India ensuring simplified addressing solutions for citizen-centric delivery of public and private services to establish ―Address as a Service (AaaS) in India.As a part of this initiative, the Department of Posts (DoP), under the Ministry of Communications, has signed an MoU with the Foundation for Science Innovation and Development (FSID), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, for designing and documenting the technology architecture for the Digital Address Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).The collaboration between the Department of Posts and FSID, IISc marks a significant step towards a seamless, efficient, and technology-driven addressing system, reinforcing India’s leadership in digital innovation.

 

2. Scrub Typhus: Scrub typhus is an infectious disease affecting rural populations in India. Recent research marks its prevalence and impact on health. Conducted by the Christian Medical College, Vellore, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the study examined over 32,000 individuals in Tamil Nadu. It revealed that scrub typhus is often overlooked as a cause of fever hospitalisations. Symptoms typically appear 10 days post-infection. Common signs include fever, headache, body aches, and rash. Due to its nonspecific symptoms, scrub typhus is frequently misdiagnosed. Diagnostic tests are available in major hospitals but are scarce in rural communities.

 

3. Plastic Ice VII: Scientists have confirmed the existence of Plastic Ice VII, a fourth form of water that emerges under extreme conditions. This revelation, led by Livia Bove from Sorbonne University, alters our comprehension of water’s behaviour in harsh planetary environments. The discovery of Plastic Ice VII involved sophisticated techniques. Researchers employed quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) alongside diamond-anvil cells to study minute high-pressure samples. These methods enabled scientists to observe molecular motion at the atomic level. Their analysis confirmed that while Plastic Ice VII retains a crystalline structure, its molecules rotate in specific, preferred directions.

1. National Code Against Age Fraud in  Sports 2025: The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India has released the Draft National Code Against Age Fraud in Sports (NCAAFS) 2025. This initiative aims to combat age fraud in  sports, ensuring fair competition and protecting genuine athletes. The draft is open for public comments and suggestions, marking update after 15 years. The NCAAFS addresses age verification, penalties, and governance in sports. The NCAAFS seeks to implement a robust verification system through a centralised database. The code introduces strict penalties for those involved in falsifying age records. It also enhances transparency and accountability in sports governance, aligning with international best practices.

1. PM Modi receives the highest Civilian Award of Mauritius at the National Day Celebrations: The Mauritius government conferred its highest civilian award, “The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean”, to the visiting Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.This is his second official visit to Mauritius after 2015.During his visit, eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between the two countries, and PM Modi was also the Chief Guest of the National Day celebration of Mauritius.PM Modi attended the 57th National Day celebrations of the Republic of Mauritius as the Chief Guest.During the celebrations, the President of the Republic of Mauritius H.E. Mr. Dharambeer Gokhool conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (G.C.S.K) award, the highest civilian award of Mauritius, on PM Modi.
