Indore claims to have become India’s first beggar-free city: Indore has become India’s first beggar-free city through a campaign launched in February 2024, reducing approximately 5,000 beggars, including 500 children, from its streets.The campaign involved rehabilitating beggars by providing employment opportunities and enrolling children involved in begging into schools.The initiative has been recognized by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and a World Bank team, serving as a model for a pilot project to eliminate begging in 10 Indian cities.Begging and giving money to beggars are banned, with three FIRs registered for violations, and a Rs 1,000 reward is offered for reporting begging activities, with many claims made.

 

2. Government releases the first ever Monthly PLFS Report for April 2025: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the first Monthly Bulletin of the revamped Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for April 2025, reporting key employment indicators like Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR), and Unemployment Rate (UR) across rural and urban India for individuals aged 15 and above.In April 2025, the overall LFPR was 55.6%, with rural areas at 58.0% and urban areas at 50.7%; male participation was higher (79.0% rural, 75.3% urban), while female rural LFPR stood at 38.2%.The national Worker Population Ratio (WPR) was 52.8%, with rural WPR at 55.4% and urban WPR at 47.4%; female WPR was 36.8% in rural and 23.5% in urban areas, totaling 32.5% overall.The unemployment rate for April 2025 was 5.1% nationally (5.2% for males and 5.0% for females), marking the start of a new survey phase with enhanced methodology, including a rotational panel design covering 89,434 households and 380,838 individuals nationwide.

 

3. 16 May – National Dengue Day: National Dengue Day is observed on 16 May every year in India to raise awareness about dengue fever, its prevention, and control measures.The day aims to educate people about the symptoms, spread, and preventive actions against dengue, especially in the pre-monsoon season when mosquito breeding increases.What is dengue?: The bite of an infected “Aedes” mosquito can transmit the virus that causes dengue fever. It typically results in skin rash, headache, joint pain, and a high fever.Dengue has the potential to be lethal in extreme cases due to internal bleeding. Dengue does not have a specific medication. Physicians concentrate on symptom management.

2. Exercise Teesta Prahar: Exercise Teesta Prahar was military field exercise conducted by the Indian Army in May 2025. It took place at the Teesta Field Firing Range in West Bengal. The exercise aimed to validate the operational readiness of various combat and support elements in challenging riverine terrain. It brought into light the Indian Army’s commitment to modernisation and joint force integration. Teesta Prahar involved multiple branches of the Indian Army, including Infantry, Artillery, Armoured Corps, Mechanised Infantry, Para Special Forces, Army Aviation, Engineers, and Signals. The exercise simulated realistic battlefield conditions to test the effectiveness of integrated operations. It served as a platform to demonstrate the Army’s preparedness for diverse combat scenarios.

Maharashtra Leads the Medal Count at 7th Khelo India Youth Games 2025: Maharashtra continued its impressive performance by topping the medal tally at the 7th edition of the Khelo India Youth Games 2025, which took place in Bihar. The state secured a total of 158 medals, comprising 58 gold, 47 silver, and 53 bronze medals. Haryana finished in second place, followed by Rajasthan in third.The event was held from May 4 to May 15, 2025, and saw participation from nearly 5,000 young athletes representing all states and Union Territories across India. 1. NASA’s GRAIL Mission: Recent findings from NASA’s GRAIL mission have revealed differences between the Moon’s two hemispheres. The study indicates that the nearside of the Moon, which faces Earth, is geologically distinct from the far side. This discovery sheds light on the Moon’s formation and internal structure. The Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission aimed to map the Moon’s gravitational field. Launched in 2011, it consisted of two twin spacecraft named Ebb and Flow. They orbited the Moon and collected data on its gravity by measuring the distance between them. This innovative technique provided unprecedented vital information about the Moon’s interior.

India’s Wholesale Inflation Hits 13-Month Low at 0.85% in April: India’s wholesale inflation dropped to a 13-month low of 0.85% in April from 2.05% in March, driven by falling food and fuel prices, with the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) declining 0.19% month-over-month.Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based retail inflation fell to 3.16% in April, the lowest since July 2019, primarily due to food inflation slowing to 1.78% from 2.69% in March.Retail inflation remaining below the Reserve Bank of India’s 4% target for three consecutive months allows the RBI to maintain an accommodative monetary policy to support economic growth.

India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Mining Truck Launched by Adani in Chhattisgarh: Adani Enterprises deployed India’s first hydrogen-powered truck for mining logistics in Chhattisgarh, capable of carrying 40 tonnes over 200 km, equipped with smart technology and triple hydrogen tanks.Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai flagged off the truck in Raipur; it will transport coal from the Gare Pelma III Block to the state power plant.This marks a major step towards sustainable transport, with Adani planning to replace diesel trucks in logistics operations, aiming to reduce carbon emissions.The project is a joint initiative between Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), promoting green hydrogen, solar energy, and eco-friendly mining practices.

 

2. Govt Approves ₹3,700 Crore Semiconductor Unit Near Jewar Airport: The government has approved the establishment of a semiconductor unit near Jewar Airport in Uttar Pradesh, under the India Semiconductor Mission, as a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn, with an investment of ₹3,700 crore.The plant will have a production capacity of 20,000 wafers per month and an output capacity of 36 million units per month, significantly boosting India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.With five semiconductor units already in advanced stages, this sixth unit marks further progress in building India’s strategically vital semiconductor ecosystem, involving 270 academic institutions and 70 startups in design innovation.The Government of India launched the Semiconductor Mission in December 2022 to build a strong semiconductor ecosystem in the country and to position India as the hub for electronic manufacturing.

The system underwent successful testing at the Seaward Firing Range in Gopalpur, Odisha, showcasing its capabilities to detect and neutralise small aerial threats. This development is crucial for national security, particularly in the context of modern warfare. Bhargavastra is designed to counter drone threats effectively. It can detect drones from a distance of over 6 km. The system employs guided micro munitions to neutralise targets. It can launch more than 64 micro missiles simultaneously, making it a formidable defence mechanism.

 

2. Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS): India’s military has recently showcased its Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS). This system plays important role in enhancing the nation’s air defence capabilities. During a recent conflict, IACCS demonstrated its ability to provide real-time data from various air defence assets. This capability is essential for neutralising aerial threats, particularly from neighbouring countries. The IACCS is an automated command and control system developed by Bharat Electronics Limited. It integrates data from multiple sources. These include ground-based radars, airborne sensors, and communication nodes. This integration allows military commanders to maintain situational awareness during air operations. Commanders can make timely decisions regarding threat identification and response.

 

3. India’s New Counter-Terrorism Doctrine: India’s counter-terrorism strategy has evolved in recent years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced a new doctrine that focuses on a robust response to terrorism. Maharashtra Makes Use of Artificial Sand Mandatory in Government Construction Projects: The Maharashtra government has approved a new policy mandating the use of artificial sand (m-sand) in all government and semi-government construction projects to reduce dependency on river sand and promote environmental sustainability.To encourage production, the state will lease government land for crusher installation, allow up to 1,500 crushers across districts, and offer MSME status with subsidies and concessions to involved companies.Artificial sand will help curb illegal sand mining, maintain construction quality, and reduce costs, with royalty prices lowered to ₹200 per brass compared to ₹600 for natural sand.

 

BANKING AND FINANCE

 

1. Public Sector Banks’ Profit Hits Record ₹1.78 Lakh Crore in FY25: The combined net profit of all 12 public sector banks (PSBs) rose to a record ₹78 lakh crore in FY25, marking a 26% increase from ₹1.41 lakh crore in FY24 — an absolute jump of ₹37,100 crore.State Bank of India (SBI) contributed over 40% of the total PSB profits, clocking a net profit of ₹70,901 crore, up 16% from the previous fiscal year.Punjab National Bank posted the highest net profit growth of 102%, reaching ₹16,630 crore, followed by Punjab & Sind Bank with a 71% jump to ₹1,016 crore.

All 12 PSBs reported profit growth in FY25. Notable performers include Central Bank of India (48.4%), UCO Bank (47.8%), and Bank of India (45.9%).This marks a remarkable turnaround from the record losses of ₹85,390 crore in FY18 to a historic profit in FY25, showcasing the sector’s revival.The success is attributed to the Modi government’s 4R strategy (Recognition, Resolution, Recapitalisation, Reforms), recapitalisation of ₹1 lakh crore, improved governance, bank mergers, and enhanced credit discipline and technology adoption.

 

2. September 23 Declared as New Ayurveda Day to Align with Global Consistency and Ayurvedic Philosophy: The Government of India has officially designated 23rd September as Ayurveda Day from 2025 onwards, replacing the previously variable date of Dhanteras to ensure consistency and enhance global visibility.This change was announced through a Gazette Notification dated 23rd March 2025, following the recommendation of an expert committee formed by the Ministry of AYUSH.September 23 coincides with the autumnal equinox, symbolizing natural balance—reflecting Ayurveda’s core principle of harmony between mind, body, and spirit.The Ministry of AYUSH encourages individuals, professionals, and global partners to actively celebrate Ayurveda Day on this fixed date, aiming to strengthen its position in global health discourse.

 

2. Ashwini Vaishnaw Inaugurates First 3nm Chip Design Centres: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has inaugurated India’s first 3nm chip design centres in Noida and Bengaluru, established by Renesas Electronics India, signaling India’s entry into the elite group of nations at the forefront of advanced chip technology.The centres are part of the government’s strategy to build a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem, covering design, fabrication, ATMP, and supply chain components, alongside nurturing a skilled talent pool for the industry.Vaishnaw also launched a semiconductor learning kit to boost practical hardware skills among engineering students, complementing access to EDA tools provided under the India Semiconductor Mission to over 270 academic institutions.

MP, Maharashtra ink MoU for Tapti Basin Mega Recharge Project: Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the Tapti Basin Mega Recharge Project, aiming to address regional water needs in both States.The project will divert water from the Tapti River (originating in Betul, Madhya Pradesh) to meet drinking water requirements for northeastern Maharashtra and provide irrigation support to southern and southeastern districts of Madhya Pradesh.The project is expected to benefit 5.78 lakh acres of land and provide permanent irrigation for over 3 lakh hectares across both states, with a total water allocation of 31.13 TMC—11.76 TMC for Madhya Pradesh and 19.36 TMC for Maharashtra.

The estimated project cost is ₹19,244 crores, with 90% funding expected from the Union government. The initiative has been described as the “world’s largest recharge scheme” by Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis.

 

4. MP approves Rs. 47 crore plans to tackle human-elephant conflict: Madhya Pradesh state cabinet approved a 47 crore initiative to address human-elephant conflict in southern regions, focusing on protecting rural communities and wildlife in areas like Bandhavgarh and Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserves.Local farmers and rural populations will receive training to safely manage elephant encounters, using chili-based barriers, citrus plantations, bee-hive fences, and trip alarms to deter elephants from farmlands and settlements.The Forest Department will employ AI and satellite-based tracking, radio bulletins, WhatsApp alerts, and a 24×7 control room to monitor elephant movements and provide real-time warnings to at-risk communities.

 

5. Justice B.R. Gavai Sworn In as 52nd Chief Justice of India: Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai takes oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan, succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna.Born on 24th November 1960 in Amravati, Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985 and became a permanent Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2005.He was elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019, and over six years, served on around 700 Benches, handling cases related to constitutional, civil, criminal, and commercial laws.Justice Gavai is the second Chief Justice of India from the Scheduled Caste community, following Justice K G Balakrishnan, and his tenure will conclude in November 2025.

World’s first commercial-scale e-methanol plant opens in Denmark: The world’s first commercial-scale e-methanol plant has started operations in Kasso, Denmark, producing 42,000 metric tons annually using renewable energy and captured CO₂.Shipping giant Maersk, which operates 13 dual-fuel container vessels and has ordered 13 more, will use the plant’s low-emission e-methanol to power its ships, reducing carbon output.Despite high current costs, producers expect e-methanol to match fossil methanol prices by 2035, advancing the shipping industry’s transition toward zero-emission fuels.

2. Former Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar Appointed UPSC Chairman: Former defence secretary Ajay Kumar has been appointed as the new chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), following the completion of Preeti Sudan’s tenure on April 29, 2025.Ajay Kumar, a retired 1985-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, served as the defence secretary from August 23, 2019, to October 31, 2022.The UPSC — which conducts civil services examinations to select officers for the IAS, Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), among others — is headed by a chairman and can have a maximum of 10 members.A UPSC chairman is appointed for a term of six years or until attaining 65 years of age.

 

3. India’s New Counter-Terrorism Doctrine: India’s counter-terrorism strategy has evolved in recent years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced a new doctrine that focuses on a robust response to terrorism. 1. Weather Balloons: Recent developments in meteorological practices have emerged due to budget cuts affecting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Trump administration’s decision to reduce NOAA’s budget by 25% has led to decrease in weather balloon launches across the United States. In response, a Silicon Valley startup plans to replace traditional weather balloons with AI-powered alternatives. This shift is poised to alter how upper air observations are conducted, impacting weather forecasting globally. The tradition of upper air observations dates back to the 18th century. In 1749, students in Glasgow first used kites to measure high-altitude temperatures. This method evolved, with meteorologists employing kites to carry instruments for measuring atmospheric conditions. The invention of hot air balloons in the 1780s allowed scientists to ascend to greater heights for data collection, although early manned flights were perilous.

1. Retail inflation drops to 3.16% in April 2025: According to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation stood at 3.16% in April, down from 3.34% in March 2025 and significantly lower than 4.83% recorded in April 2024.This decline of 18 basis points from March makes April’s inflation the lowest year-on-year reading since July 2019.The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI)-based food inflation fell to 1.78% in April from 2.69% in March. This is the lowest food inflation since October 2021. The food price easing is largely attributed to lower inflation in vegetables, pulses, fruits, cereals, meat and fish, and personal care items.

 

2. Global Shipping Emissions Levy: The maritime industry is undergoing changes to address climate change. The International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee recently voted on a new emissions levy. This decision marks a very important moment in global shipping regulations. The proposed Market-Based Measure (MBM) aims to balance environmental needs with economic fairness. The MEPC-83 voted 63 to 16 in favour of Singapore’s hybrid model as the Net Zero Framework. This makes international shipping the first global industry to adopt a mandatory emissions levy. However, the decision is not final. It requires amending Annex VI of the MARPOL convention, which will undergo a six-month review. A two-thirds majority is needed for final adoption. Currently, the outcome remains uncertain due to abstentions and potential objections from member states.

Delhi Legislative Assembly to Be Fully Solar-Powered: The Delhi Legislative Assembly will be the first in India to be fully powered by solar energy, with the foundation stone of a 500-kilowatt solar power plant.A new 500-kilowatt rooftop solar plant will replace the existing 200-kilowatt system and is expected to be completed in 45 days, providing enough energy for the assembly’s annual electricity requirements.The solar power project, worth Rs 2 crore, will generate 8,20,000 units, with surplus units fed into the national grid, earning revenue for the assembly while reducing its electricity bill and carbon footprint.By January 2025, India’s installed solar power capacity reached 100.3 GW, and the country aims to reach 500 GW from clean energy sources by 2030, boosting renewable energy development.

 

2. India’s Long-Term Credit Rating Upgraded to ‘BBB’ by Morningstar DBRS: Morningstar DBRS upgraded India’s long-term credit rating from ‘BBB (low)’ to ‘BBB’ with a Stable outlook, citing strong reforms, improved fiscal management, and a healthier banking sector.India’s short-term rating was raised from R-2 (middle) to R-2 (high), indicating stronger short-term debt repayment capacity and greater investor confidence.The agency highlighted India’s resilient economy, with projected GDP growth of 6.2% in 2025 and 6.3% in 2026 (IMF estimates), supported by domestic demand, digitalisation, and improved public spending.Despite concerns about high public debt (80.2% of GDP) and fiscal deficits, positives like low inflation (3.3%), high forex reserves ($677 billion), and a 13-year low in bad loans (2.5%) provide a strong economic foundation.

 

3. Centre terminates services of SECI Chairman R P Gupta with immediate effect: The Central government has terminated RP Gupta’s services as CMD of Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) with immediate effect, nearly a month before his scheduled term was to end in June 2025.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the termination, but the government has not cited any official reason for the abrupt move.RP Gupta, a 1987 batch retired IAS officer and IIT Kanpur aerospace engineering graduate, previously served as Secretary of the Environment Ministry and has worked with NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Coal.

Taliban Bans Chess in Afghanistan, Citing Religious Concerns and Links to Gambling: The Taliban government in Afghanistan has banned chess and also suspended the Afghanistan National Chess Federation (ANCF), citing concerns that the game promotes gambling, which is prohibited under Islamic law.The Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice stated that chess will remain banned until its compliance with Sharia law can be fully assessed; similar bans have been imposed in the past, including during the Taliban’s earlier rule in 1996.Former FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has appealed to the Taliban to reconsider the decision, while the regime continues to impose broader restrictions on sports, women’s rights, and public freedoms since returning to power in August 2021.

The total project cost is Rs 27,360 crore, with the Centre contributing Rs 18,128 crore over five years. The PM SHRI scheme operates on a funding model where the Centre and states share costs.
