1. LIC Disburses ₹115.13 Crore Under Bima Sakhi Scheme in FY 2025–26: The Bima Sakhi – Mahila Career Agent (MCA) Scheme was launched by the Government of India on 9th December 2024; in FY 2024–25, LIC disbursed ₹62.36 crore as stipends under the scheme.For FY 2025–26, LIC allocated a budget of ₹520 crore, out of which ₹115.13 crore has been paid to Bima Sakhis till 14th July 2025; currently, there are 2,05,896 Bima Sakhis across the country.LIC provides a monthly stipend for the first 3 years, ranging from ₹7000 in the 1st year to ₹5000 in the 3rd year, along with commission, subject to performance parameters.Graduate Bima Sakhis who complete 5 years of service can apply for the post of Apprentice Development Officer (ADO) in LIC, based on eligibility and performance.

 

2. NUCFDC and IIA India Sign MoU to Strengthen Audit and Governance in Urban Cooperative Banks: The National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation Ltd. (NUCFDC) and Institute of Internal Auditors India (IIA India) have signed an MoU to strengthen audit, governance, and risk management frameworks in Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs).The collaboration will focus on adopting international audit standards, improving internal control systems, and enhancing the professional capabilities of internal auditors and senior management in UCBs.Through this partnership, UCBs will gain access to global resources, including audit standards, ESG and AI practices, training modules, webinars, and tools like “Internal Auditor” magazine and “Tone at the Top” briefings to improve institutional resilience and depositor trust.

 

3. PhonePe Partners with SBI Card to Launch PURPLE and SELECT BLACK Co-Branded Credit Cards: PhonePe, in partnership with SBI Card, has launched two co-branded credit cards — PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE and PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK — issued on RuPay and Visa networks, aiming to expand formal credit access and offer rewards on everyday spending.The SELECT BLACK card offers up to 10% value back on PhonePe and Pincode app spends and comes with premium benefits like Priority Pass membership, while the PURPLE card offers up to 3% value back and includes basic rewards and benefits.Both cards come with welcome e-gift vouchers (₹1,500 for SELECT BLACK and ₹500 for PURPLE), annual travel vouchers, fuel surcharge waivers, and complimentary domestic lounge access, with RuPay cards also being UPI-linkable for seamless merchant payments.

 

4. Ashok Chaudhary Elected as Chairman of GCMMF: Dairy cooperative leader Ashok Chaudhary was elected unopposed as the chairman of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets milk and dairy products under the brand “Amul”.Gordhan Dhameliya, Chairman of Rajkot District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd, has been elected as the new Vice-Chairman of GCMMF.

 

5. Sandiip Bharadwaj Appointed as New MD & CEO of Paytm Money: Paytm Money appointed Sandiip Bharadwaj as its new Managing Director and CEO, succeeding Rakesh Singh, who will take up a new role within the Paytm group.Prior to joining Paytm Money, Bharadwaj was the Chief Operating and Digital Officer at HDFC Securities, where he led digital strategy, product innovation, marketing, and customer experience.Paytm Money is a part of the Paytm Group, founded by Vijay Shekhar Sharma.

 

6. 24 July – National Thermal Engineer Day: National Thermal Engineer Day is observed on 24th July every year to recognise and celebrate the important contributions of thermal engineers in various industries, particularly in electronics, power generation, manufacturing, and automotive sectors.The day honors the hard work and innovation of thermal engineers, who design and manage systems that deal with heat transfer and thermal management — essential for the efficiency, safety, and durability of modern electronic devices and industrial systems.National Thermal Engineer Day was first established in 2014 by Advanced Thermal Solutions Inc. 1. Indian Cities Need $2.4 Trillion by 2050 to Combat Climate Risks: World Bank Report: Indian cities are becoming more vulnerable to floods, heatwaves, and other climate-related risks, requiring over USD 2.4 trillion in investments by 2050 to develop resilient and low-carbon infrastructure, as per a World Bank report.Annual economic losses from rain-related flooding are currently around USD 4 billion and could rise to USD 5 billion by 2030 and between USD 14 to 30 billion by 2070 if no corrective measures are taken.The report, prepared with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, highlights that cities will remain central to economic growth, with 70% of new jobs projected to come from urban areas by 2030.

 

2. India and Nepal Sign MoUs for 5 High-Impact Development Projects Worth NRs. 390 Million: The Embassy of India in Kathmandu, along with Nepal’s Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, signed MoUs for 5 High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) in education and health sectors under Indian grant assistance, with a total estimated cost of NRs. 390 million.The five projects include construction of school buildings and a hospital in Dhanusha, Parsa, Achham, Bara, and Manang districts, and will be implemented by local authorities including municipalities and rural municipalities of Nepal.These projects aim to enhance education and healthcare infrastructure at the grassroots level, benefiting local communities with improved access to essential services.Since 2003, India has undertaken 579 HICDPs in Nepal, out of which 496 have been completed, covering sectors such as health, education, sanitation, connectivity, and drinking water across all 7 provinces.

 

3. U.S. to Withdraw from UNESCO Again by End of 2026: The United States has decided to withdraw from UNESCO for the third time, citing what it calls the agency’s anti-Israel bias and support for “woke, divisive” cultural policies.The decision, announced under former President Donald Trump’s leadership, will take effect at the end of December 2026, just two years after the U.S. rejoined during the Biden administration.The U.S. had previously exited UNESCO in 1984 under the Reagan administration and again in 2017 under Trump, mainly over issues of mismanagement, bias, and Palestine’s inclusion as a member state.

1. Brazil Joins South Africa’s Genocide Case Against Israel: Brazil is preparing to formally join South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. The case, filed in 2023, alleges that Israel’s military actions extend beyond targeting Hamas militants and involve attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. Brazil’s move reflects growing international concern over alleged violations of international law in the conflict. South Africa filed a lawsuit at the ICJ under the 1948 Genocide Convention. It claims Israel’s military strikes in Gaza violate its obligations by targeting civilian areas such as schools, hospitals, and shelters. The case argues that these actions constitute acts of genocide against Palestinians. Israel denies these allegations, stating its operations focus solely on Hamas militants.

 

2. Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel Launched for Indian Coast Guard: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) recently took step in enhancing its maritime environmental response capabilities with the launch of ‘Samudra Prachet’. This is the second and final Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL). The vessel was launched on 23 July 2025 in Vasco, Goa, marking a milestone in India’s push for self-reliance in defence production and maritime security. ‘Samudra Prachet’ features 72% indigenous content, reflecting a strong emphasis on domestic manufacturing. This project has boosted national capability, generated employment, and enhanced skills by involving local industries and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The vessel is part of India’s broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers in critical defence sectors.

1. Maruti Suzuki Partners with DPIIT to Support Tech-Driven Startups in Auto and Mobility Sector: Maruti Suzuki India has partnered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to support DPIIT-recognised startups in developing technology-driven solutions for automobile manufacturing and mobility.Startups under the ‘Startup India’ initiative will get the opportunity to participate in Maruti Suzuki’s innovation programmes, aiming to drive innovation in the auto sector.Selected startups will receive expert mentorship, industry insights, and access to Maruti Suzuki’s infrastructure and network to validate and scale their solutions effectively.

 

2. New Wart Sea Slug Species Discovered in Indonesia: Recent research has led to the discovery and formal description of two new wart sea slug species in the waters off North Sulawesi, Indonesia. These species, named Phyllidia ovata and Phyllidia fontjei, enrich the known marine biodiversity of the Indo-Pacific region. The findings show the importance of citizen science and international collaboration in uncovering hidden species. Five women scientists from Germany, Indonesia, and Wales identified these species. Phyllidia ovata was recognised after 23 years of underwater photography records across Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Australia. Phyllidia fontjei, smaller and harder to find, was documented mainly in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Andaman Sea. Both species belong to the Phyllidiidae family, known for their bright colours and chemical defences derived from sponge prey.

 

BANKING AND FINANCE

 

1. ADB Lowers India’s FY26 GDP Growth Forecast to 6.5% Citing US Tariffs and Policy Uncertainty: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has revised India’s GDP growth forecast for FY26 down to 6.5% from the earlier 6.7% due to the impact of US tariffs, global slowdown, and policy uncertainty affecting exports and investments.Despite the downgrade, India remains one of the fastest-growing major economies, with strong domestic consumption supported by a revival in rural demand helping maintain economic momentum.For FY27, ADB lowered the GDP growth forecast to 6.7% from 6.8%, citing policy uncertainty, but expects improvement due to rising investments, supportive monetary easing, and favorable financial conditions; meanwhile, World Bank maintained its FY26 projection at 6.3%.

 

2. Crisil Projects 6.5% GDP Growth for FY26: Crisil has projected India’s GDP to grow at 6.5% in FY26, supported by rising domestic consumption, above-normal monsoon, income tax relief, and expected rate cuts by the RBI Monetary Policy Committee.The report identifies US tariff-related global uncertainty as the top risk to India’s growth, but emphasises a positive near-term outlook due to improving macroeconomic indicators.Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation fell to 2.1% in June 2025 — the lowest in 77 months — and is expected to average 4% in FY26, down from 4.6% in FY25, aided by falling food and global commodity prices.

 

3. Equitas Small Finance Bank Launches FCNR (B) Deposit and Explorer Savings Account for NRIs and Seafarers: Equitas Small Finance Bank has launched two new offerings for NRIs and seafarers: the FCNR (B) Deposit and the Equitas Explorer Savings Account, aimed at catering to their financial needs with attractive features.The FCNR (B) Deposit offers tax-free interest income, competitive interest rates, and full repatriation of principal and interest for Non-Resident Indians.The Equitas Explorer Savings Account, available in NRE and NRO variants, includes benefits such as an International VISA Platinum Debit Card, ₹1 crore air accident insurance, ₹2 lakh home insurance, and mandate facility for resident relatives in India.

NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Core Industries Growth Slows to 1.7% in June 2025; Coal Sector Contracts Sharply, Steel Leads Gains: June 2025 saw a modest 7% growth in the Index of Eight Core Industries, marking a three-month high but falling sharply from 5% growth in June 2024 and significantly below the FY 2024-25 average of 6.3%; five out of eight sectors reported contraction.The coal sector witnessed the steepest contraction at -6.8%, followed by declines in natural gas (-2.8%), crude oil (-1.2%), and electricity (-2.8%) in June 2025, as per data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on July 21, 2025.Steel (9.3%), cement (9.2%), and refinery products (3.4%) were the only sectors to show positive growth in June 2025, with steel posting the highest year-on-year gain among all sectors.The ICI measures the combined and individual performance of production of eight core industries viz. Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Refinery Products, Fertilizers, Steel, Cement and Electricity. The Eight Core Industries comprise 40.27 percent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).

 

2. Parliament Passes ‘Bills of Lading, 2025’ to Modernize Maritime Shipping Laws: On the first day of the Monsoon Session, the ‘Bills of Lading, 2025’ bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha, after already being cleared by the Lok Sabha, and now awaits Presidential assent to become law.The bill seeks to replace the 169-year-old Indian Lading Act, 1856, introducing a modern and globally aligned legal framework for maritime shipping documentation in India.It aims to simplify legal language, reduce ambiguity, clarify rights and obligations of all parties involved in shipping, and minimize litigation, thus supporting Ease of Doing Business (EODB) and India’s global trade standing.The bill includes an enabling clause empowering the Central Government for effective implementation and features a repeal and saving clause to ensure legal continuity of actions under the old Act.

 

3. NESTS Signs MoU with Avanti Fellows to Provide JEE & NEET Coaching for Tribal Students from 2025: The National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) signed a five-year MoU with Avanti Fellows to provide IIT-JEE and NEET coaching to tribal students studying in Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs), effective from the academic year 2025–26.Under the initiative, a Centre of Excellence (CoE) will be established at EMRS Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) with a batch of 80 selected students, aiming to offer structured, high-quality academic support to tribal youth for national-level entrance exams.The collaboration seeks to bridge the educational gap, promote inclusive education, and empower tribal students with the tools, mentorship, and confidence needed to excel in competitive exams and realize their full potential.

 

4. Jharkhand Becomes First State to Launch Mining Tourism: Jharkhand has become the first Indian state to launch mining tourism, an initiative announced by CM Hemant Soren and inspired by his visit to the Gava Museum of Mines in Barcelona, aiming to showcase the state’s rich industrial and mineral heritage.Home to nearly 40% of India’s mineral wealth, Jharkhand has partnered with Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) through an MoU to open mining sites to tourists, students, and the general public for educational and experiential visits.The Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation (JTDC) will manage the project’s operations with the support of CCL and other stakeholders, promoting the state’s mining identity and boosting tourism diversification.

 

5. L&T to Build India’s Largest Green Hydrogen Plant at IOCL Panipat Refinery Under 25-Year Agreement: L&T Energy GreenTech (LTEG), a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro, will set up India’s largest green hydrogen plant at IOCL’s Panipat refinery in Haryana, supplying 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for 25 years under a build-own-operate (BOO) model.

The plant will be powered entirely by renewable energy and will use indigenously manufactured high-pressure alkaline electrolysers from L&T Electrolysers Ltd’s Hazira facility, supporting the goals of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

 

6. Anup Kumar Saha Resigns as Bajaj Finance MD; Rajeev Jain Reappointed Till 2028: Anup Kumar Saha resigned as Managing Director of Bajaj Finance just four months after his appointment, citing personal reasons.Rajeev Jain has been reappointed as Managing Director till March 31, 2028; he previously held the same role and will also continue serving as Vice Chairman of the company.

1. First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath to Leave the IMF to Rejoin the Harvard Economics Faculty: International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced that Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director (FDMD), would be leaving the Fund at the end of August to return to Harvard University, where she will be the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics.Gopinath joined the Fund in January 2019 as Chief Economist and was promoted to First Deputy Managing Director in January 2022.

 

2. Hazardous Sewer Cleaning Risks and Safety Measures in India: Recent reports show critical safety lapses among sewer and septic tank workers in India. Over 90% of workers who died during hazardous cleaning lacked proper safety gear. A government-commissioned social audit has revealed alarming gaps in safety protocols, training and worker consent. This has prompted the launch of targeted schemes to improve conditions. Between 2022 and 2023, 150 deaths occurred due to hazardous sewer and septic tank cleaning. The audit examined 54 cases across eight States and Union Territories. It found that in 49 cases, workers had no protective equipment. Only gloves and gumboots were sometimes provided. Mechanised cleaning tools were almost never used. Training on safety measures was nearly absent.

1. Indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Ship Ajay: The Indian Navy marked a key milestone with the launch of Yard 3034 Ajay, the eighth and final ship of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) series. Built indigenously by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, this launch reinforces India’s push for self-reliance in defence shipbuilding under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Yard 3034 Ajay was launched on 21 July 2025 at GRSE’s Kolkata yard. The event was graced by Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh, Chief of Materiel, and Mrs Priya Deshmukh, who ceremonially launched the ship. Senior officials from the Indian Navy and GRSE attended. The launch comes shortly after the commissioning of the first ship of the class, INS Arnala, on 18 June 2025. The second ship, INS Androth, is ready for delivery following successful sea trials.

1. National Sports Governance Bill 2025: The National Sports Governance Bill 2025 was introduced in India’s Parliament to improve transparency and accountability in sports administration. It targets national sports bodies including the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The bill aims to establish a robust regulatory framework to govern sports federations and promote athlete welfare. The bill seeks to enhance governance in Indian sports by enforcing transparency and ethical practices. It focuses on athlete welfare, fair play, and integrity. The legislation intends to resolve long-standing issues such as opaque election processes and weak athlete representation. It aims to create a culture of good governance based on universally accepted principles. The bill mandates the formation of key bodies like the National Olympic Committee, National Paralympic Committee, National Sports Federations (NSFs), and Regional Sports Federations. Each body will govern specific recognised sports disciplines. This structure is designed to streamline administration and promote consistent standards across all sports.

MSDE Launches AI-Powered ‘Skill India Assistant’ Chatbot to Boost Skilling Access via WhatsApp: The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has launched the Skill India Assistant (SIA), an AI-powered chatbot developed by Meta and NSDC to provide personalised skilling and employment support through WhatsApp and the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) platform.Built on Meta’s open-source LLaMA model, SIA offers multilingual, multimodal support (voice/text in English, Hindi, and Hinglish), and provides services such as course recommendations, job listings, nearby training locators, and doubt-clearing quizzes — all available 24/7, even in low-bandwidth areas.With a focus on inclusivity and accessibility, SIA is India’s first large-scale public AI deployment in the skilling sector, designed to reach rural and underserved communities through WhatsApp and supported by a national awareness campaign.

2. 23 July – National Broadcasting Day: National Broadcasting Day is observed in India on 23rd July every year.The day commemorates the first-ever radio broadcast in India, which was aired on July 23, 1927, from the Bombay Station of the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC).Later, the IBC was taken over by the government and renamed All India Radio (AIR) in 1936. The day recognizes the vital role broadcasting, especially radio, has played in informing, educating, and entertaining the public, particularly in rural and remote areas.

 

3. Comet AI Browser: The launch of Comet, an AI-first web browser by Perplexity, marks shift in internet usage in 2025. Designed to delegate web tasks to AI agents, Comet promises a new browsing experience where users interact less with websites and more with intelligent assistants that act on their behalf. Currently in early access under the Perplexity Max plan, Comet is shaping the future of browsing through automation and contextual understanding. Comet was developed to overcome limitations of traditional browsers and AI tools embedded within them. Unlike browsers that rely on cloud-based agents or extensions, Comet is a standalone application built on the Chromium framework. This gives it compatibility with popular Chrome extensions and user settings while maintaining full control over AI integration. The browser’s AI agents are deeply embedded, allowing seamless interaction across tabs and services without repeated logins or manual data transfer.

1. ADB Sanctions ₹975 Crore for Industrial Infrastructure in Tripura: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a ₹975.26 crore loan to build world-class infrastructure—such as industrial sheds, roads, power substations, and fire stations—across nine industrial zones in Tripura, including Bodhjungnagar, R K Nagar, Dukli, and AN Nagar.The Tripura Industrial Development Corporation (TIDC) has begun work in newly allotted industrial areas at Santirbazar (127 acres) and Fatikroy (28 acres), while also reclaiming 28 acres from inactive units to promote efficient land use and support emerging entrepreneurs.

 

2. Income Tax Bill 2025: The Income Tax Bill 2025 has recently sparked debate over privacy concerns linked to its digital search and seizure provisions. The Bill grants tax authorities powers to override digital security measures and access social media and encrypted communications. Despite objections, a Parliamentary Select Committee has recommended retaining these powers with minimal changes. This move reflects the government’s intent to adapt tax enforcement to the digital age while balancing privacy and legal safeguards. The Bill defines virtual digital space broadly, covering all digital platforms where users interact and communicate. Tax officials can bypass passwords and encryption on social media, emails, and messaging apps to uncover financial data hidden in encrypted chats. This aims to tackle tax evasion through digital means but raises privacy issues.

1. “Meri Panchayat” App Wins WSIS Prizes 2025 Champion Award for Advancing Digital Rural Governance: The “Meri Panchayat” mobile application received the WSIS Prizes 2025 Champion Award under the category of Cultural Diversity and Identity, Linguistic Diversity, and Local Content at the WSIS+20 High-Level Event held in Geneva, Switzerland.Developed by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and NIC, the app empowers over 25 lakh elected representatives and nearly 950 million rural citizens across 2.65 lakh Gram Panchayats, promoting digital inclusion and transparent rural governance.The app provides real-time access to Panchayat budgets, development plans, public services, weather updates, and grievance redressal in 12+ Indian languages, with geo-tagging and social audit features enhancing accountability.

Sant Kabir and National Handloom Awards 2024 Announced: The Ministry of Textiles will confer the Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and National Handloom Awards 2024 to honor 24 outstanding contributors to the handloom sector, including weavers, designers, startups, marketers, and producer companies under the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP)A total of 5 Sant Kabir Awards and 19 National Handloom Awards will be presented during the 11th National Handloom Day celebrations on August 7, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, in the presence of the Hon’ble President of India and other dignitaries.The Sant Kabir Handloom Award includes a cash prize of ₹3.5 lakh, a gold coin (mounted), a Tamrapatra (certificate), shawl, and a certificate of recognition, awarded to weavers with exceptional contributions to weaving traditions, innovation, and community development.The National Handloom Award recognizes excellence in craftsmanship and innovation, offering a cash prize of ₹2 lakh, along with a Tamrapatra, shawl, and certificate, to motivate and inspire handloom artisans across the country.

NCLT Approves Merger of Adani Cementation with Ambuja: The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has approved the merger of Adani Cementation with Ambuja Cements, aiming to consolidate the Adani Group’s cement business and unlock synergistic benefits.The merger is based on a share swap arrangement, under which Adani Enterprises will receive 8.7 million shares of Ambuja Cements. The effective date of amalgamation has been set as April 1, 2024.With this consolidation, Adani Group becomes the second-largest cement manufacturer in India, boasting an annual production capacity of over 100 million tonnes (MTPA).

 

3. Centre Launches ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat’ in Varanasi: The central government has launched a nationwide youth-led national movement, ‘Nasha Mukt ‘Yuva for Viksit Bharat. The initiative was launched at the recently concluded Youth Spiritual Summit in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.The Youth Spiritual Summit adopted a ‘Kashi Declaration’ that outlined a series of initiatives to be undertaken to lay the foundation for a national youth-led anti-drug campaign in the country.The theme of the Youth Spiritual Summit was- Drug-Free Youth for a Viksit Bharat.

Centre launches SASCI scheme to develop iconic tourist destinations at global standards: The Ministry of Tourism has launched operational guidelines for the ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI)’ scheme, aimed at transforming select tourist destinations into world-class iconic attractions.The scheme provides funding support for comprehensive development covering infrastructure, branding, sustainability, and overall tourist experience enhancement.Project proposals from states were evaluated on factors such as connectivity, ecological sustainability, infrastructure, carrying capacity, management, impact, and marketing, with final approvals following SASCI guidelines.The government will fund projects until March 31, 2026, while state governments will manage implementation, with expected completion within two years; the Ministry will also promote these sites through digital campaigns and events.

 

2. China Begins World’s Largest Hydropower Dam Project: China has initiated construction of the world’s largest hydropower dam on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The project, costing over $170 billion, is set to become China’s most ambitious hydropower venture since the Three Gorges Dam. It aims to generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours annually, matching the electricity consumption of the United Kingdom in 2024. The dam is located on the Yarlung Zangbo River, which flows into India and Bangladesh as the Brahmaputra. The project has sparked environmental and geopolitical concerns while also boosting Chinese markets. The dam consists of five cascade hydropower stations. It exploits a 2,000-metre drop in the river across 50 kilometres. This drop offers immense potential to generate electricity. The project is expected to be operational by the 2030s. It will supply power primarily to Tibet and other parts of China. The scale of investment is unprecedented, with an estimated cost of at least $170 billion.

 

3. Australia-Tuvalu Climate Migration Visa Scheme: Australia launched a pioneering migration visa for Tuvalu residents. This visa offers a legal pathway for climate-induced migration. Over 5,000 Tuvaluans applied within a month. The scheme allows 280 people annually to relocate to Australia through a ballot. This initiative addresses the severe impacts of climate change on Tuvalu’s population. Tuvalu is a small Pacific island nation made up of nine low-lying atolls. Its average elevation is just 2 metres above sea level. Rising seas threaten flooding, storm surges, and land loss. Sea levels near Tuvalu have risen by 15 cm in 30 years. By 2050, much of the land and infrastructure may be below high tide. Saltwater intrusion endangers freshwater supplies and agriculture.

Indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Ship Ajay: The Indian Navy marked a key milestone with the launch of Yard 3034 Ajay, the eighth and final ship of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) series. Built indigenously by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, this launch reinforces India’s push for self-reliance in defence shipbuilding under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Yard 3034 Ajay was launched on 21 July 2025 at GRSE’s Kolkata yard. The event was graced by Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh, Chief of Materiel, and Mrs Priya Deshmukh, who ceremonially launched the ship. Senior officials from the Indian Navy and GRSE attended. The launch comes shortly after the commissioning of the first ship of the class, INS Arnala, on 18 June 2025. The second ship, INS Androth, is ready for delivery following successful sea trials.

3. Kamchatka Earthquake 2025: The Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia experienced a series of powerful earthquakes. The strongest measured magnitude 7.4. These quakes occurred near the eastern coast, a region known for intense seismic activity due to tectonic plate interactions. Authorities issued tsunami warnings which were later cancelled as no waves were detected. The event brought into light the ongoing geological risks in this remote but geologically active area. Kamchatka sits at the junction of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. This makes it a hotspot for earthquakes and volcanic activity. Since 1900, seven earthquakes of magnitude 8.3 or above have struck the region. The peninsula hosts 127 volcanoes, 22 active, including Klyuchevskaya Volcano, the highest peak at 4,750 metres. Volcanic activity and earthquakes are closely linked here.
