 NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

Centre Forms Six Working Groups to Boost Domestic Manufacturing and Reduce Imports: The Central Government has constituted six sector-specific working groups to identify up to 100 products for domestic manufacturing and import substitution, aiming to strengthen India’s self-reliance. The groups cover key sectors including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, capital goods, energy, construction equipment, defence, aerospace, and electronics. Chaired by the Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the groups will submit their recommendations to the Cabinet Secretariat within three weeks. The initiative comes amid rising imports, which increased by 7.5% to USD 775 billion in FY 2025-26, with major imports including crude oil, electronic goods, machinery, chemicals, and transport equipment.

 

Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary Declared India’s 100th Ramsar Site: Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia has been designated as India’s 100th Ramsar Site, recognizing its rich avifaunal biodiversity and importance as a habitat for migratory and resident birds. A Ramsar Site is a wetland recognized under the Ramsar Convention as a Wetland of International Importance. The convention was signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971.

 

West Bengal set to become 36th State and UT to implement Ayushman Bharat Yojana: West Bengal is set to become the 36th State/Union Territory to implement Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), following the signing of an MoU between the National Health Authority and the State Government. The implementation of AB PM-JAY will provide health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalization, offering financial protection to millions of eligible beneficiaries in the state. The move is expected to strengthen West Bengal’s healthcare ecosystem by improving access to affordable, quality healthcare and enabling nationwide portability of healthcare benefits for beneficiaries.

 

Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiri Tahr Population Rises to 1,364, Reflecting Success of Conservation Efforts: Tamil Nadu’s latest synchronised survey estimated the population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr at 1,364 in 2026, reflecting a 4.68% increase from 1,303 in 2025 and an overall rise of more than 32% since 2024. Conducted from 24–27 April 2026, the survey covered 177 survey blocks, 126 forest beats, and 43 forest ranges across all 14 Nilgiri Tahr-bearing forest divisions in Tamil Nadu, with support from the Kerala Forest Department. Officials credited the population growth to conservation efforts under Project Nilgiri Tahr, while emphasizing the importance of protecting high-altitude grasslands and preventing forest fires for the species’ long-term survival. The survey also utilized the Android-based VARUDAI mobile application for real-time data collection, improving monitoring accuracy. Simultaneously, Tamil Nadu recorded 393 bird species with an estimated population of 6.01 lakh birds during its annual synchronised bird surveys.

 

Swaminathan Janakiraman Reappointed as RBI Deputy Governor: The Central Government has re-appointed Swaminathan Janakiraman as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for an additional term of two years. His renewed tenure will commence on 26 June 2026, ensuring continuity in the RBI’s leadership. Janakiraman has been serving as one of the Deputy Governors of Reserve Bank of India, playing a key role in banking regulation and financial sector oversight.

 

Tarun Kapoor Gets One-Year Extension as Advisor to PM Modi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a one-year extension for Tarun Kapoor as Advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Mr. Kapoor’s extended tenure in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) will come into effect from 10 June 2026 and continue for an additional one year.

 

Haryana Sets December 2027 Deadline for Yamuna Projects: Haryana fixed 31 December 2027 as the deadline for ongoing and proposed Yamuna pollution-control projects on 9 June 2026. The action plan covers sewage treatment, industrial waste management, drain monitoring, and river rejuvenation in the Yamuna catchment. Haryana had 91 operational Sewage Treatment Plants with a combined capacity of 1,543 million litres per day on 13 March 2026. Three additional STPs with a combined capacity of 88 MLD were under construction, with completion expected by March 2027. The state also planned Common Effluent Treatment Plants, micro-STPs, and effluent-tapping infrastructure in the Yamuna catchment. The target for scientific treatment of water from all drains entering the Yamuna was set for the end of the 2026-27 financial year.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung Nominates Han Seong-sook as Prime Minister : South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has nominated Han Seong-sook, the current Minister for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), as the country’s next Prime Minister. If approved by the National Assembly, Han would become the first female Prime Minister under the Lee administration and only the second woman in South Korea’s history to hold the post after Han Myeong-sook (2006–2007).

 

2. Israel Plans Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue: Israel has announced plans to install a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in one of its major cities. The announcement was made on 6 June 2026, the day observed as Shivrajyabhishek Din, which marks the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on 6 June 1674. Israeli Consul General in Mumbai Yaniv Revach announced the plan and met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on the project. The Maharashtra government has offered support on historical references, artistic guidance, and design aspects for the statue. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj founded the Maratha Empire in the 17th century and was crowned at Raigad Fort in 1674. Shivrajyabhishek Din is observed every year on 6 June in Maharashtra and among Maratha communities.

 

3. Canada Plans Social Media Ban for Under-16 Users: Canada’s federal government announced plans on 8 June 2026 to introduce legislation that includes a ban on   use for children under 16 years of age. The proposal is part of a wider online harms bill that is expected to be tabled in the House of Commons on 10 June 2026. The planned bill is linked to the federal online harms framework in Canada. The legislation is expected to set age-based restrictions for social media platforms and to create legal duties for online services operating in the country. Canadian Heritage Minister Marc Miller stated in April 2026 that the federal government was considering a social media ban for minors. The proposed law will allow social media platforms to seek exemptions if they can show that they can protect young users online. The bill is also expected to assign responsibilities to platforms that use artificial intelligence tools, including possible transparency requirements on reporting threats to police.

 

4. Nithya Raman Advances to Los Angeles Mayoral Runoff: Nithya Raman, an Indian-American member of the Los Angeles City Council, advanced to the November 3, 2026 mayoral runoff election in Los Angeles, California. She finished second in the June 2, 2026 primary election behind incumbent Karen Bass. The Los Angeles mayoral election uses a primary and runoff system. In the June 2, 2026 primary, Karen Bass secured 34.3% of the vote, Nithya Raman received 28.6%, and Spencer Pratt received 25.8% with 93% of votes counted by June 8, 2026. The runoff election on November 3, 2026, is the first Los Angeles mayoral runoff in two decades. Nithya Raman led Spencer Pratt by 229,576 votes to 207,757 votes by June 8, 2026.

 

5. Bonn Climate Conference Calls for $120 Billion Adaptation Finance: The Bonn Climate Conference, also called SB64, is being held from 8 June to 18 June 2026 as the 64th sessions of the Subsidiary Bodies under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Health advocates at the meeting have called for public, grant-based adaptation finance to be tripled to at least $120 billion by 2035. Adaptation finance refers to climate funding for measures that reduce vulnerability to climate impacts such as heat, floods, droughts, sea-level rise, and extreme weather. The 120 billion target is a tripling of the 40 billion adaptation finance goal linked to COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2021. The Global Climate and Health Alliance made the call during the Bonn meetings. Jess Beagley, policy lead at the Global Climate and Health Alliance, linked adaptation finance with investments in health systems, water, sanitation, disaster preparedness, and food systems.

 

6. Pashinyan Claims Victory in Armenia Election: Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan claimed victory in a general election held on 7 June 2026. Preliminary results released on 8 June 2026 placed his governing Civil Contract party in first place with 49.82% of the vote. Armenia is a parliamentary republic in the South Caucasus region. The National Assembly is the unicameral legislature of Armenia and has 107 seats under the current constitutional framework. Preliminary counts on 8 June 2026 projected 61 seats for Civil Contract in the National Assembly. A party needs a parliamentary majority to form a government, while constitutional amendments require a referendum under Armenia’s system.

1. Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit Appointed as Next Vice Chief of the Air Staff: Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit has been appointed as the next Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) of the Indian Air Force and is scheduled to assume office on 1 July 2026, succeeding Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor. Commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on 6 December 1986, Air Marshal Dixit previously served as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff at Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff, before being appointed as VCAS.

 

2. Defence Ministry approves 250 MW solar project in Sitapur : The Defence Ministry approved a 250 MW Solar Power Project with a Battery Energy Storage System at Sitapur, also known as an ex-cantonment area, in Uttar Pradesh on 9 June 2026. The project will use about 850 acres of vacant defence land and will be implemented through NTPC Limited. A solar power project converts sunlight into electricity through photovoltaic panels or solar thermal systems. Defence land is land owned or controlled by the Ministry of Defence for military, administrative, or allied purposes. Ex-cantonment areas are former cantonment areas that have been reclassified under local administrative arrangements. A Battery Energy Storage System stores electricity for later use and supports power supply during periods of low generation or high demand. In solar projects, BESS helps manage variability in output caused by daylight and weather conditions. Grid-connected solar projects with storage are used for load balancing and backup support.

 

3. Lt Commander Suraj Prashar Gets Shaurya Chakra: Lieutenant Commander Suraj Prashar of the Indian Navy received the Shaurya Chakra from President Droupadi Murmu at the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 (Phase-I) held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 8 June 2026. He was honoured for bravery during Operation Chuntawadi in Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir, on the night of 5/6 November 2024. The Shaurya Chakra is India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award. It is awarded for acts of bravery, courageous action, or devotion to duty, and it can be conferred on military personnel, civilians, and members of the armed forces in peacetime situations. Operation Chuntawadi was a joint cordon and search operation conducted in Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir, on 5/6 November 2024. The operation aimed to neutralise terrorist threats and involved engagement with two terrorists during the encounter.

1. India Wins SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 for Record Sixth Time: The India Women’s National Football Team defeated the Bangladesh Women’s National Football Team by 3-1 in the final to win the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 title for a record sixth time. The championship final was played at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, where India overcame the defending champions Bangladesh, to reclaim the regional crown.

 

2. Savitha Shri Baskar Wins 2026 Women’s Asian Individual Chess Championship: Savitha Shri Baskar, a 19-year-old International Master from Chennai, won the Women’s Asian Individual Chess Championship 2026 held in Ulaanbaatar and secured qualification for the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2027. Savitha finished with 7.5 points from nine rounds, defeating Afruza Khamdamova on tie-breaks, while Song Yuxin claimed the bronze medal. This is the biggest achievement of Savitha’s career and marks India’s 13th Women’s Asian Championship title, with India winning three of the last four editions of the tournament.

 

3. Mirra Andreeva Wins First Grand Slam Title at French Open: Mirra Andreeva won her maiden Grand Slam title by defeating Maja Chwalinska in the women’s singles final of the French Open. With this victory, Andreeva became the first Russian woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Maria Sharapova won the French Open in 2014.

 

4. India Wins 114 Medals at World Yogasana Championships: India hosted the inaugural World Yogasana Championship from 4 June to 8 June 2026 at TransStadia in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. India topped the medal table with 114 medals, including 102 gold medals, at the event that featured athletes from 79 countries. The World Yogasana Championship is an international sporting event for competitive Yogasana, a discipline that includes standardised postures and routines. The inaugural edition was held in Ahmedabad, which is a major city in Gujarat and a venue for international sports events. The championship received support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, the Ministry of Ayush, the Sports Authority of India, the Sports Authority of Gujarat and Gujarat Tourism. Yogasana is linked with India’s traditional physical culture and has been organised in modern competitive formats by national and international bodies.

 

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

 

1. Zojila Tunnel Nears Breakthrough: The Zojila Tunnel is a 13.153-kilometre road tunnel under construction in the Himalayas at an altitude of about 11,578 feet, or nearly 3,000 metres, above sea level. The final breakthrough is scheduled for 9 June 2026, and full operational completion is expected by February 2028. The tunnel is being built to provide all-weather road connectivity between Baltal near Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir and Meenamarg in the Drass-Kargil region of Ladakh. The route across Zojila Pass remains closed for several months each year because of heavy snowfall and avalanches. Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited is executing the project for the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. Work on the tunnel began in October 2020, and the estimated project cost is Rs 6,809.69 crore, or about USD 815 million.

 

2. India Ranks Fifth in Military Spending, Second in Arms Imports: India remained the world’s fifth-largest military spender in 2025 with expenditure of $92.1 billion, and it ranked behind the United States, China, Russia and Germany. India was also the world’s second-largest importer of major arms during the 2021–25 period, with 8.2% of total global arms imports. India’s military expenditure in 2025 rose by 8.9% from the previous year. The United States, China, Russia and Germany were the only countries with higher defence spending in 2025. India’s arms imports declined by 4% between 2016–20 and 2021–25. SIPRI linked this fall to India’s growing capacity to design and produce weapons, while also noting delays in domestic production.

 

BANKING AND FINANCE

 

1. RBI MPC Keeps Repo Rate Unchanged at 5.25%, Retains Neutral Stance: The 61st meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), chaired by Sanjay Malhotra, unanimously decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 5.25% and continue with the neutral policy stance. The MPC projected India’s real GDP growth at 6.6% for 2026-27 and CPI inflation at 5.1%, reflecting a balanced outlook on growth and price stability.

 

2. RBI Imposes ₹2.49 Lakh Penalty on Canara Bank for Delayed Currency Chest Reporting: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹2,49,658 on Canara Bank for delayed reporting by its currency chest, citing a violation of regulatory reporting norms. The penalty order was received by Canara Bank on 6 June 2026, and the financial impact of the regulatory action is limited to the penalty amount of ₹2.49 lakh.

 

3. PFRDA Launches StAR NPS Digital Platform for Seamless National Pension System Onboarding: The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has operationalized StAR NPS (Securities Trading and Reporting – National Pension System) to enhance and simplify the National Pension System enrollment process. Developed by BSE Technologies Private Limited, the new digital platform enables faster, paperless, and more convenient onboarding of NPS subscribers. StAR NPS will be used by Points of Presence (PoPs) and their pension agents for subscriber registration, onboarding, and servicing, improving efficiency and accessibility in pension-related services.

 

4. IFC Commits $50 Million to Hygenco Green Energies to Boost India’s Green Hydrogen Sector: International Finance Corporation (IFC) has committed $50 million to Hygenco Green Energies to support the development of the green hydrogen sector in India. IFC, the private-sector investment arm of the World Bank Group, is partnering with other global investors to accelerate clean energy and sustainable industrial growth. Along with IFC, Siemens Financial Services, Clean Technology Fund, Frontier Opportunities Fund, and Fullerton Carbon Action Fund have signed a combined $105 million investment agreement in Hygenco Green Energies.

AWARDS AND HONOURS

 

1. President Murmu to Confer Padma Awards on June 23: President Droupadi Murmu will confer the Padma Awards on 23 June 2026 at the second Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The ceremony will honour 65 personalities with the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri awards. The Padma Awards are among India’s civilian honours and are announced annually on the eve of Republic Day. They are conferred in three categories, namely Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The awards recognise distinguished service in fields such as art, literature, education, medicine, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, civil service, sports, and other disciplines. A total of 131 Padma Awards were approved for 2026. The list includes five Padma Vibhushans, 13 Padma Bhushans, and 113 Padma Shris. The first Civil Investiture Ceremony for the 2026 awards was held on 25 May 2026, when 66 awardees received their honours.

 NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. West Bengal Legislative Assembly Joins NeVA Initiative: The West Bengal Legislative Assembly signed a Tripartite MoU for the implementation of the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) in the presence of Kiren Rijiju and other dignitaries. With the signing of the MoU, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly became the 33rd legislature in India to join the NeVA initiative, supporting the vision of “One Nation – One Application” for legislative governance. So far, 21 legislatures across the country have successfully transitioned to fully digital functioning through the NeVA platform, promoting paperless and transparent legislative processes.

 

2. PM Modi Inaugurates New Terminal Building of NAMO Airport in Daman, Launches Projects Worth ₹2,970 Crore: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building of NAMO Airport in Daman, aimed at enhancing air connectivity, tourism, and economic growth in the Union Territory. Developed with modern passenger facilities and a seating capacity of around 180 passengers, the terminal is expected to improve connectivity with major cities such as Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. During his visit, PM Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth approximately ₹2,970 crore across healthcare, tourism, infrastructure, public welfare, and connectivity sectors.

 

3. FSSAI Introduces Standardized Vegan Logo; Mandatory for Approved Vegan Food Products from July 2027: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a standardised vegan logo for approved vegan food products to help consumers easily identify vegan foods. Under the amended Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Regulations, all approved vegan food packages must display the prescribed vegan logo, creating a uniform national identity for vegan products. The use of the new vegan logo will become mandatory from 1 July 2027, aiming to improve transparency, prevent misleading claims, and promote environmentally sustainable food choices in India.

 

4. Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar Inaugurates Samriddhi Kendram in Andhra Pradesh Under BharatNet Initiative: Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar inaugurated the Samriddhi Kendram at Narakoduru village in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district to promote rural digital transformation.

Established under the BharatNet Udyami Initiative, Narakoduru has become the third village in India and the first in the Telugu States to host this integrated rural development model. Built at a cost of ₹1.16 crore, the centre offers 11 essential services under one roof, including health screening, telemedicine, soil testing, skill development, high-speed internet, and free Wi-Fi to improve access to services in rural areas.

 

5. Tamil Nadu Issues Cool Roof SOP: Tamil Nadu released India’s first state-level Standard Operating Procedure for Cool Roof Coating Application on 5 June 2026, which is World Environment Day. The document sets a framework for cool roof initiatives as a passive cooling measure for homes, schools, and public buildings. The SOP provides a 12-stage implementation process. It covers feasibility assessment, material procurement, application methods, quality assurance, and periodic maintenance. The SOP recommends coatings with a Solar Reflective Index of 102. The framework is intended for use in residential buildings, educational institutions, and public facilities across Tamil Nadu. Cool roof coating is a surface treatment with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance. It reduces heat absorption by building roofs and lowers indoor temperatures in hot climates.

 

6. Chhattisgarh’s M-CAD Irrigation Model Gets Central Recognition: Chhattisgarh’s irrigation initiative under the Modernisation of Command Area Development and Water Management (M-CADWM) scheme received Central government recognition on 6 June 2026. The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti asked other States and Union Territories to study the Chhattisgarh model for improving irrigation efficiency and water-use capacity. On 2 May 2026, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai inaugurated a ₹119-crore pressurised lift irrigation project at Bagia village in Jashpur district. The project is planned to irrigate 4,933 hectares across 13 villages and uses underground pipelines, solar power, SCADA, and IoT. The project has received ₹95.89 crore in Central funding and is scheduled for completion within six months of inauguration.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Vipul Appointed India’s Next Ambassador to Saudi Arabia: Vipul, a 1998-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Prior to this appointment, Vipul served as India’s Ambassador to Qatar since August 2023 and has held diplomatic assignments in Cairo, Colombo, Geneva, and Dubai. He also served as Joint Secretary (Gulf) in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2020 to 2023 and was Consul General of India in Dubai between 2017 and 2020.

 

2. Neelkanth Mishra Appointed Executive Director at World Bank Headquarters for Three-Year Term: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Neelkanth Mishra as Executive Director at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C. for a tenure of three years. The tenure of Parameswaran Iyer has been extended until Neelkanth Mishra assumes charge of the position.

 

3. 5 June – International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing: The International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing is observed annually on 5 June to raise awareness about the threats posed by illegal fishing to marine ecosystems, food security, and sustainable fisheries. The day was officially established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017, following a proposal by the Food and Agriculture Organization.

 

4. 7 June – World Food Safety Day: World Food Safety Day is observed every year on 7 June to raise awareness about the importance of safe food and to prevent foodborne diseases worldwide. Theme 2026 – From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2018, and the first observance was held in 2019.

 

5. India Sets $30 Billion Seafood Export Target by 2031: India has set a target of 30 billion in seafood exports by 2031, against the present export value of about 8.5 billion. The target was announced in June 2026 during a national workshop on seafood exports in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. India’s marine product exports reached ₹73,890.46 crore, or USD 8.45 billion, in fiscal year 2025-26. The export volume stood at 19.72 lakh metric tonnes in the same period. Seafood exports include shrimp, fish, molluscs, and other marine products. Shrimp remains a major export item in India’s marine trade basket. Andhra Pradesh accounts for 66% of India’s shrimp exports and 55.39 lakh tonnes of aquaculture production in 2025-26. A Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbour has been approved for Kakinada under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.

DEFENCE

 

1. India Showcases Zorawar Tank and TEJASTRA: India showcased the indigenous Zorawar light tank and TEJASTRA at Larsen & Toubro’s Hazira facility in Gujarat in June 2026. The Zorawar platform is a 25-tonne light tank developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and Larsen & Toubro for high-altitude combat along the Line of Actual Control. The Zorawar light tank is designed for mobility in mountainous terrain and for deployment in areas with limited infrastructure. It is an indigenous armoured platform developed under a public-private partnership between the Defence Research and Development Organisation and Larsen & Toubro. The tank integrated the Nag Mk II anti-tank guided missile and completed tests in October 2025. The Nag Mk II has a maximum range of 7 to 10 kilometres. The Ministry of Defence placed an initial order for 59 Zorawar tanks. The long-term procurement plan covers more than 295 additional units, and full induction is projected for 2027.

 

2. India, U.S. Hold 29th Army-to-Army Staff Talks: India and the United States held the 29th Army-to-Army Staff Talks in Hawaii on 6 June 2026. The talks formed part of bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries and covered military coordination, professional exchanges, and interoperability. Army-to-Army Staff Talks are a formal military dialogue mechanism between the Indian Army and the United States Army. Such staff-level talks are used to discuss training, exercises, logistics, doctrine, and operational cooperation. Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, Deputy Chief of the Army Staff (Strategy), co-chaired the Indian side. Lieutenant General Joel Vowell, Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army Pacific, co-chaired the United States side. The talks took place in Hawaii, which hosts major United States military commands in the Indo-Pacific region.

2. India Wicketkeeper-Batter KS Bharat Announces Retirement from International Cricket: Indian wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 32, bringing an end to his stint with the national team. Bharat represented India in 7 Test matches, with his final appearance coming against England in Visakhapatnam in February 2024, and completed 19 dismissals behind the stumps. He was also a member of India’s playing XI in the ICC World Test Championship Final 2023 against Australia at The Oval, marking one of the highlights of his international career.

 

3. Praggnanandhaa Wins Norway Chess Title: R Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian to win the Norway Chess title on 5 June 2026. The 20-year-old Grandmaster won the final round in Oslo by defeating Germany’s Vincent Keymer and finished with 18 points. Norway Chess is an elite classical chess tournament held in Oslo, Norway. The 2026 edition ran from 25 May to 5 June and included Magnus Carlsen, D Gukesh, Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So, and Vincent Keymer. Classical chess is a standard time-control format used in top-level tournaments and world championship events. Norway Chess uses classical games for its main standings, and Praggnanandhaa won his final four classical games in the 2026 event.

1. SpaceX Signs Computing-Power Agreement With Google: SpaceX filed a disclosure with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission on 5 June 2026 for a computing-power agreement with Google. The contract covers compute capacity from October 2026 to June 2029 and includes about 110,000 NVIDIA GPUs, CPUs, memory, and related components. Either Google or SpaceX can terminate the agreement with 90 days’ notice after 31 December 2026. If SpaceX does not deliver the committed GPU quantity by 30 September 2026, Google can terminate the agreement or accept reduced capacity with a corresponding reduction in monthly fees. Google described the arrangement as a short-term agreement for bridge capacity for demand linked to its agentic AI platform, Gemini Enterprise. The deal adds to SpaceX’s compute-related business, which also includes an agreement with Anthropic for capacity from its Colossus data centres.

 

2. Andhra Pradesh Plans AI Newborn Growth Monitoring System: Andhra Pradesh plans to introduce an AI-powered system for monitoring the health and growth of newborn babies. The initiative will integrate the Shishu Maapan application, developed by the Wadhwani AI Foundation, with the mobile application used by ASHA workers. The system uses a mobile phone video to capture newborn measurements without physical contact. It can record weight, height, head circumference, chest circumference, and mid-upper arm measurements. A pilot project is underway in the Mangalagiri constituency and covers about 1,000 newborns. The pilot areas include urban health centres in Indiranagar, Kopparao Colony, Kaza, and Yerrabalem, along with the Pedavadlapudi Primary Health Centre.

 

3. Sriram Krishnan to Leave White House AI Role: Sriram Krishnan, the Senior White House Policy Adviser on Artificial Intelligence, is set to leave his post at the end of June 2026 after an 18-month tenure in the Trump administration. He was appointed in early 2025 and worked on artificial intelligence policy, model access agreements, and international AI discussions. The Senior White House Policy Adviser on Artificial Intelligence is a policy post linked to the formulation of federal AI strategy in the United States. The role involves coordination on executive orders, national policy frameworks, and government engagement with technology firms. The American AI Action Plan is a White House policy initiative associated with the administration’s AI strategy. It covers measures related to AI development, security assessment, and the objective of maintaining US leadership in artificial intelligence.

ADB and Standard Chartered Partner to Boost Supply Chain Finance in India : Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Standard Chartered Bank signed agreements to strengthen supply chain finance in India through risk-sharing arrangements covering both US dollar and rupee transactions. The partnership includes a risk participation arrangement through Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) for USD-denominated transactions and a partial guarantee facility to support onshore rupee transactions.

 

2. India’s Economy Grows 7.7% in FY 2025-26: India’s real GDP is estimated to grow by 7.7% in FY 2025-26, up from 7.1% in FY 2024-25, with the economy reaching a size of over ₹323 lakh crore, according to provisional estimates released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. Growth was supported by strong performance in the agriculture and fishery sectors, while manufacturing, trade, hotels, transport, communication, broadcasting-related services, and real estate recorded double-digit growth during the financial year. Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF), a key indicator of investment activity, grew by 8.2% in FY 2025-26, reflecting robust investment momentum, higher government capital expenditure, resilient private consumption, and healthy agricultural output.

1. Chandigarh University Establishes IndiaAI Data Lab with Intel India: Chandigarh University became India’s first private university to establish the IndiaAI Data Lab in collaboration with Intel India, focusing on AI, Data Science, and emerging technology skills. The lab will provide students with a simulated apprenticeship platform, hands-on training, practical industry exposure, and opportunities to work on real-world AI projects to enhance employability. Chandigarh University also launched MCA Data Science and BCA Data Science programs in partnership with Intel India, strengthening industry-academia collaboration in advanced technology education.

 

2. MY Bharat Recognised by Guinness World Records: Mera Yuva Bharat has been recognised by Guinness World Records for achieving the record of “Most Users to Take an Online Quiz in One Week.” The record was set through the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders’ Dialogue 2026 Quiz, which was conducted from 25 October to 31 October 2025. The Guinness World Records certificate was received by Mansukh Mandaviya. Mera Yuva Bharat was launched on 31 October 2023 under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with the objective of youth empowerment and nation-building, targeting young people aged 15–29 years.

 

3. India Expands Ethanol Fuel Network by 2027 : India has announced a phased expansion of ethanol dispensing infrastructure with 500 flex-fuel retail pumps planned by the end of 2026 and about 5,000 outlets targeted by the end of 2027. The plan is linked to flex-fuel vehicles and higher ethanol blends in petrol under the country’s biofuel and transport fuel framework. Flex-fuel vehicles are designed to run on petrol-ethanol blends across a wider range than conventional petrol vehicles. Recent models in India include Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R Flex Fuel and Hero MotoCorp’s Splendor Plus and HF Deluxe motorcycles, which are compatible with blends from E20 to E85. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposed amendments on 27 April 2026 to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The proposal covers blends of up to 85% ethanol in gasoline, known as E85, and E100, along with biodiesel blends of up to 100% in diesel, known as B100.

 

4. FSSAI Vegan Logo for Food Products from July 2027: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has mandated a standardised vegan logo for approved vegan food packages from 1 July 2027. The requirement applies to vegan food products covered under the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026, which amended the 2022 vegan food regulations and were notified on 21 May 2026. Under FSSAI regulations, vegan food is defined as a product free from animal-derived ingredients, animal-derived additives, and animal-derived processing aids. The definition also covers products that do not involve animal testing, except where such testing is required by a regulatory authority. The official vegan logo is a green square-framed symbol with a stylised “V”, a sprouting leaf, and the word “VEGAN” below it. FSSAI has prescribed dimensions and design specifications for the logo to ensure uniform labelling on food packages.

 

5. Government Forms Six Sector-Specific Working Groups: The Indian government constituted six sector-specific working groups on 4 June 2026 to identify up to 100 products for domestic manufacturing and import substitution. The groups cover pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical devices; chemicals and petrochemicals, textiles and footwear; capital goods, automotive and electric vehicles, and advanced capital goods; energy; construction equipment and infrastructure; and defence and aerospace for civilian applications and electronics. Each working group is chaired by the secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). The members are drawn from ministries and departments such as commerce, DPIIT, NITI Aayog, pharmaceuticals, economic affairs, science and technology, chemicals, textiles, heavy industry, ports and shipping, electronics and information technology, road transport, new and renewable energy, and oil.

 

6. PM Modi to Inaugurate Gujarat Highway Projects: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Surat in Gujarat on 5 June 2026, which coincides with World Environment Day. During the visit, he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for National Highway projects worth ₹12,421 crore in South Gujarat. The inaugurated works include two sections of the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway. The 36-km Kim–Ena section is Package VI, and the 27.5-km Gandeva–Ena section is Package VII. These two packages were developed at a combined cost of ₹7,689 crore. Foundation stones will also be laid for two projects worth about ₹149 crore on the Hazira Port-Surat section of NH-53. These works include a six-lane flyover and a vehicular underpass for freight movement.

 

7. Assam Plans One Crore Tree Plantation Drive: Assam will launch a statewide plantation drive on World Environment Day, 5 June 2026, to plant one crore saplings across the state. The initiative will involve about 35 lakh women from Self-Help Groups and will be linked to community-based environmental action in rural and urban areas. World Environment Day is observed every year on 5 June and was established by the United Nations in 1972. The day is used globally for environmental awareness activities, plantation drives, waste management campaigns, and conservation programmes. Self-Help Groups are small community-based collectives, usually formed for savings, credit, and livelihood activities. In Assam, women’s Self-Help Groups are used in rural development programmes, local enterprise, and social mobilisation.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. United States Becomes India’s Largest LPG Supplier: India’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) import pattern changed in 2026, with the United States becoming India’s largest supplier and the Middle East losing its earlier dominant share. India imports LPG for household cooking fuel, industrial use, and commercial consumption, and the fuel is traded in pressurised cylinders or bulk cargoes. In May 2026, the United States supplied more than 55% of India’s LPG imports. U.S. shipments to India rose to 666,000 tonnes in May 2026, compared with much lower volumes in February 2026. Before the escalation of tensions in West Asia around 28 February 2026, the Gulf region accounted for about 60% of India’s LPG consumption and up to 90% of its imports. Liquefied petroleum gas is a mixture of propane and butane that is stored as a liquid under pressure. India is one of the world’s largest LPG consumers, and its import basket has traditionally depended on Gulf suppliers because of shorter shipping routes and established trade links.

 

2. EU Advances Ukraine and Moldova Membership Bids: The European Union moved ahead with accession procedures for Ukraine and Moldova on 3 June 2026, when EU ambassadors in Brussels launched the process to open the first negotiating cluster in membership talks with both countries. The first cluster in EU accession negotiations is called “Fundamentals” and covers rule of law, democratic institutions, judicial reform, public administration, and fundamental rights. Hungary lifted its veto on Ukraine’s accession process after an agreement with Kyiv on the rights of ethnic Hungarians in western Ukraine. The agreement covers linguistic, educational, cultural, and political rights for about 100,000 ethnic Hungarians in the Transcarpathia region.

 

3. Portugal and Austria Elected to UN Security Council: Portugal and Austria were elected on 3 June 2026 as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. Their two-year term will begin on 1 January 2027 and end on 31 December 2028. The United Nations Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It has 15 members, including 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members elected by the United Nations General Assembly. The election was held during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly at United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Portugal and Austria won the two seats allocated to the Western European and Other States Group, also known as WEOG. Portugal received 134 votes in the secret ballot, and Austria received 131 votes. Germany received 104 votes in the same election.

 

4. Pentagon Launches Project Patriot Pipeline: Project Patriot Pipeline is a workforce development initiative of the United States Department of War, announced on 3 June 2026 by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. The programme consolidates multiple training and personnel development efforts for service members, military spouses, and federal civilians. Project Patriot Pipeline is designed to support defence manufacturing and related industrial requirements in the United States. The initiative covers civilian workforce needs in aviation, healthcare, cybersecurity, engineering, manufacturing, and aviation maintenance. The Under Secretary of War for Personnel and Readiness is responsible for preparing an implementation plan within 45 days of the 3 June 2026 memorandum. Anthony J. Tata, the Undersecretary of War for Personnel and Readiness, testified on the initiative before the Senate Armed Services Committee personnel subcommittee on 20 May 2026.

 

5. India Leads in US Unicorn Founders: India is the leading country of origin for immigrant founders of United States billion-dollar startups, with 96 such companies as of 3 June 2026. Immigrants have founded or co-founded 455 of 775 privately held United States startup companies valued at $1 billion or more, which is 59% of the total. A Stanford University Venture Capital Initiative study updated on 13 May 2025 found that immigrants accounted for 44% of US unicorn founders. The same study placed India at the top with 90 unicorn founders. Indian-born founders formed nearly one-fifth of all non-US-born unicorn founders in a 4 December 2024 Global Finance Magazine article citing Stanford research. Indian entrepreneurs are prominent in fintech, software-as-a-service, and developer infrastructure sectors. A unicorn is a privately held startup company valued at $1 billion or more. A founder is the person who starts a company, and a co-founder is one of the persons who starts it with others.

DEFENCE

 

1. Ladakh Gets India’s First Model Border Village: Ladakh’s Chumur village in eastern Ladakh has become the site of India’s first model border village near the India-China border. The project is being developed under the Union Government’s Vibrant Villages Programme, which covers border settlements in high-altitude and remote areas. Chumur is located at an altitude of 16,700 feet in eastern Ladakh. The village has 24 households and a population of 91 people, and many residents are engaged in Pashmina rearing and production. The settlement lies in a strategic border region along the India-China frontier. The Vibrant Villages Programme is a Central Sector scheme for developing villages in border areas with basic infrastructure and livelihood support. The first phase of the programme includes plans for 10 model border villages. The programme covers infrastructure, employment and livelihood creation, all-weather functionality, and civilian-defence integration.

 

2. Indian Navy to Induct Five Indigenous Naval Platforms : The Indian Navy is set to induct five indigenous naval platforms in 2026, including two Project 17A stealth frigates, one Survey Vessel (Large), and two anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft. The platforms include INS Dunagiri, INS Mahendragiri, Sanshodhak, Agray, and Malwan. Project 17A is a class of stealth frigates built for the Indian Navy with a focus on reduced radar cross-section and modern combat systems. Dunagiri is the fifth ship of the Nilgiri-class and was delivered by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata on 30 March 2026. INS Mahendragiri is another Project 17A frigate scheduled for induction in June 2026.

1. Arjun Erigaisi Enters FIDE Top 10 Rankings : Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi is ranked No. 8 in the June 2026 FIDE ratings with an ELO rating of 2761. He is the only Indian player in the FIDE Top 10 rankings in the latest list. FIDE is the International Chess Federation, and it publishes official world chess ratings for standard, rapid, and blitz formats. The FIDE rating system uses ELO points to measure player strength and ranking position. Erigaisi returned to the Top 10 after gaining 10 rating points. His recent results included the Super Chess Classic Romania, TePe Sigeman 2026, and the Sardinia World Chess Festival. At the TePe Sigeman 2026 tournament, he finished runner-up after a tiebreak loss to Magnus Carlsen.

1. T-Mobile USA Opens Global Technology Centre in Hyderabad: T-Mobile USA, through TMUS Global Solutions, inaugurated its Global Technology Centre in Hyderabad on 4 June 2026. The facility is located in Hitech City and covers 2.5 lakh sq ft, or 250,000 square feet. The Global Technology Centre is T-Mobile US’s first global technology hub outside the United States. The centre is designed as a technology and innovation facility for software engineering, DevOps, product development, data analytics, cybersecurity, cloud technologies, and artificial intelligence. Hyderabad is a major information technology hub in Telangana and hosts several global capability centres, software firms, and research facilities. Hitech City is a well-known technology district in Hyderabad and contains offices of multinational companies, start-ups, and engineering services firms.

 

2. Fotu La Tunnel Project Approved in Ladakh: The Fotu La Tunnel project on National Highway-01 in Ladakh has been approved with an estimated cost of ₹1,196.22 crore. The project covers a 2.65-kilometre alignment and includes a 1.96-kilometre twin-tube tunnel and 0.69 kilometre of approach roadsFotu La Pass is located at an altitude of about 4,108 metres and is the highest point on the Uri–Srinagar–Leh highway corridor. National Highway-01 is a key road link in Ladakh for civilian movement, essential supplies, and defence logistics. The project includes a unidirectional twin-tube tunnel at Fotu La and approach roads on both sides. A twin-tube tunnel has two separate tubes for traffic movement, and unidirectional traffic flow is used in road tunnels to improve operational control and safety.

 

3. NASA Ends MAVEN Mars Mission: NASA declared the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission concluded on 3 June 2026 after a prolonged loss of contact with the spacecraft. MAVEN was launched in November 2013 and operated for more than 11 years in orbit around Mars. MAVEN stands for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution. It was a NASA orbiter designed to study the upper atmosphere of Mars and the planet’s atmospheric escape processes. The spacecraft exceeded its primary one-year mission and continued scientific operations for over a decade. MAVEN also served as a data relay orbiter for NASA’s Curiosity and Perseverance rovers. The last successful communication with MAVEN took place on 6 December 2025 before a scheduled occultation behind Mars. NASA’s Deep Space Network did not detect a signal when the spacecraft was expected to re-emerge. Brief telemetry data showed that MAVEN entered safe mode and began rotating at an unusually high rate.

J&K Bank Wins Gold Award at Finacle Innovation Awards 2026 for Data Analytics Platform : J&K Bank won the Gold Award at the Finacle Innovation Awards 2026 in Mumbai under the category “Modern Technologies-led Innovation – Data Insights & Analytics Platform” for its cloud-based enterprise data and analytics ecosystem.

The Finacle Innovation Awards 2026, organized by Infosys Finacle, were held under the theme “Recomposing Banking, Playbook for the Next Phase of Banking Transformation.”

 

2. BHEL Secures Nigeria Refinery Export Order: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) signed a contract on 2 June 2026 with Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals Free Zone Enterprise in Nigeria for a refinery and petrochemical project. The order value is estimated at ₹2,000 crore to ₹2,500 crore, or about US240 million to US300 million. The contract covers design, manufacturing, supply, erection supervision, and commissioning supervision of eight gas turbine generator packages. The packages are meant for a petroleum refinery and a polypropylene plant in the Dangote Industries Free Zone in Nigeria. The order was awarded through an international tender process. The contract excludes civil works and includes supply up to Mumbai Port and performance guarantee tests.

1. Idris Elba Receives Knighthood from King Charles: Idris Elba was knighted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, earning the title “Sir”. The honour was awarded for Idris Elba’s services to young people, recognising his contributions beyond acting, including his work as an activist and community advocate. During the same investiture ceremony, Jayne Torvill received a damehood, Christopher Dean received a knighthood, and Meera Syal was awarded a damehood.

 

2. National Awards for e-Governance 2026 Announced: The National Awards for e-Governance 2026 selected 17 projects and initiatives on 4 June 2026. The awards recognise exemplary contributions in digital governance across seven categories. The 29th National Conference on e-Governance is scheduled to be held in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The National Awards for e-Governance are presented for implementation of digital public services and administrative innovation in India. The awards cover projects from Union ministries, state institutions, local bodies, and public authorities. Agri Stack is a project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. Mahakumbh 2025 is an initiative of the Prayagraj Mela Authority in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The Blood Bag Traceability and Citizen Interaction portal is a project of the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council, also known as K-DISC. TRINETRA is an artificial intelligence-based video surveillance system for the Mahakal Rudrasagar Integrated Development Area in Ujjain and is associated with the Mahakaleshwar Temple Trust.
