Daily GK Update- 8th June, 2022

 

NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. National Food laboratory of FSSAI Inaugurated in Raxaul, Bihar: At Raxaul in Bihar, the union minister for health and family welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers Mr. Mansukh Mandaviya, inaugurated the National Food Laboratory of FSSAI. Under the bilateral agreement between Indo-Nepal, this laboratory was established to reduce the time of testing of food samples imported from Nepal to Raxaul. The testing of food was a time taking because the food samples with legal sanity were sent to the National Food Laboratory of Kolkata. The minister of agriculture and livestock development in, the Government of Nepal, Mahendra Rai Yadav, was also present at the inauguration ceremony of the food laboratory. Key points:

a)      Mr. Mandaviya addressed the occasion and said that the inauguration of the Food Laboratory will increase the scope of Nepal to import more food products to India and connect both the countries with each other by trading more efficiently.

b)      He also said that the food laboratory will be accredited by July-August of this year by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). The laboratory will start testing samples of cereals, fats and oils, spices, fruits, vegetables, and packaged drinking water very soon.

c)       He said that India will provide assistance to get National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accreditation to the Kathmandu Food Lab if needed.

d)      The inauguration of the Food Laboratory in Raxaul was a constant request of the exporters from Nepal, which the Indian government now fulfills in 2022.

e)      The inauguration of the National Food Laboratory has fulfilled the wishes of the neighboring country and it shows the commitment of India to improving the relationship between the two countries, making it a strong bond economically and improving the connection between both the countries.

 

2. Blue Duke declared as the State Butterfly of Sikkim: Chief Minister P.S. Golay, during the World Environment Day celebrations, declared Blue Duke as the State Butterfly of Sikkim. The announcement was made at Saramsa Garden near Ranipool during the event organized by the Forest department. Blue Duke, a native butterfly species of Sikkim, edged past another contender Krishna Peacock to be announced as the State Butterfly of Sikkim.

About the Blue Duke:

a)      The Blue Duke represents Sikkim with its two unique colours blue representing the sky and white depicting the snow clad mountains of the Himalayas, it is befitting to Sikkim and its unique identity.

b)      Blue Duke is found at an altitude below 1,500 metres in the Himalayas and is commonly found in places like Pakyong, Passingdong and Hee-Gyathang in Dzongu, Lingee in South Sikkim and Yangsum in West Sikkim and closer to the State capital in places like Tadong and Ranka.

c)       Nosang found the species in 2012, around the area of Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College at Tadong, Gangtok. Since then he has approached both the previous and the current State government to recognise the butterfly species as the State butterfly.

d)      Blue Duke which is also called Bassarona durga durga is unique to Sikkim and Eastern Himalayas, first discovered in the State in 1858. Blue Duke falls in the Schedule 2 of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and is a highly protected species of butterfly in the Himalayas.

3. ‘Sital Sasthi’ festival being celebrated in Odisha: Sital Sasthi is a sacred Hindu festival is being celebrated in Odisha. This week-long special festival highlights the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to the Hindu calendar, Sital Sasthi is observed on the sixth day of the Jyestha month during the Shukla Paksha.

About the festival: People observing this festival believe that Lord Shiva represents the scorching heat of summer while Goddess Parvati signifies the first rain. So, this holy and lavish wedding is observed for a good monsoon. Sital Sasthi is a celebration wherein Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are adopted by two families, and their wedding is solemnised with the involvement of rituals. After the marriage is performed, the God and Goddess are then carried around the city via a procession

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. THE Asia University Rankings 2022: 4 Indian institutions in top 100: Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2022 was released by the Times Higher Education (THE). The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Banglore continued to be the best institute of the country. It ranked at 42nd place. India was the third most-represented country, behind Japan and mainland China with 71 institutions. 17 Indian universities topped the list under top 200.

Top 4 universities under top 100:

a)      Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (42nd)

b)      JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (65th)

c)       Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (68th)

d)      Indian Institute of Technology Indore (87th)

Globally:

a)      Meanwhile, Japan is the most-represented nation again this year, with 118 institutions, up from 116 last year.

b)      China is home to the continent’s top two universities for the third consecutive year, with Tsinghua and Peking universities holding on to first and second place, respectively. Twenty-two of these 30 top-100 Chinese institutions have risen or stayed stable compared with last year. Overall, there are 97 mainland Chinese universities in the ranking, up from 91 last year, making it the second most-represented nation in the table.

c)       Elsewhere, a Palestinian university is ranked for the first time and Saudi Arabia has increased its representation in the top 100 from four to six institutions.

 

2. Bloomberg Billionaires list: Mukesh Ambani richest in Asia: Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani has regained the position of India as well as Asia’s richest man, replacing Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Ambani who has a net worth of $99.7 billion added $9.69 billion in 2022. Mr Ambani is followed by Gautam Adani on the global billionaire list. Adani is ranked ninth with Net worth $98.7 billion in the Bloomberg Billionaire index.

a)      Tesla CEO Elon Musk remains the world’s richest person with a net fortune of $227 billion.

b)      Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is the second richest man with a $149 billion net worth, as per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

c)       LVMH’s Bernard Arnault with $138 billion net worth is the third richest person in the world followed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates with $124 billion net fortune in the fourth position and legendary investor Warren Buffett in the fifth position with a net worth of $114 billion.

 

3. World Oceans Day: 8th June: The World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8 every year across the globe. The day is commemorated to remind people of the importance of the oceans and the major role they play in everyday life. “Revitalization: collective action for the ocean” is the theme for World Oceans Day 2022, a year framed by the UN Decade of Ocean Science and the celebration of the United Nations Ocean Conference, two years after being cancelled because of the pandemic.

World Oceans Day History: The concept of World Oceans Day was first proposed by the UN in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It was suggested that a day be observed to raise awareness about the crucial role oceans play in our lives and ways in which people can help protect them. Since 2002, the World Ocean Network has built support for ocean awareness events on June 8 with the help of sponsorship from UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. On December 5, 2008, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution to designate this day.

1. Rajasthan CM introduced Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in the State for Sportspersons: Rajasthan Chief Minister (CM) Ashok Gehlot has announced that the state government is set to introduce the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award to the State’s sportspersons. He made the announcement while addressing the inauguration and player award ceremony at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

The CM inaugurated Rajasthan High-Performance Sports and Rehabilitation Centre, Renovated Synthetic Hockey Astro Turf and Badminton Indoor Hall, Olympic and also awarded Para Olympic medalists, Asian Games-2022 and Commonwealth Games-2022 players. He also informed that Rajiv Gandhi Rural Olympics will commence on 29th August 2022 in which more than 27 lakh players of all ages can participate. He also released the torch of the Rural Olympic during the event.

1. Digital Payments in India expected to increase triple by 2026: The digital payment markets in India are expected to increase triple from the current three trillion dollars to ten trillion dollars in the coming four years, which is by 2026. This was confirmed by the report issued by PhonePe after the collaboration with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the report was titled ‘Digital Payments in India: A $10 trillion opportunity. The report highlights the growth of India’s digital payments in the last five years. The growth in five years has resulted in aiming those digital payments will aim to constituting two out of three payment transactions by 2026.

Key points of the report:

a)      The report highlights the in-depth scenario of the growth of digital payments in India and focuses on factors and enablers to understand and unleash the potential of digital payments and its massive growth in the Country.

b)      The head of the strategy and investor relations, PhonePe, Karthik Raghupathy said in the report that “This report is part of the PhonePe Pulse initiative, which was launched last year, in our effort to give back to the fintech ecosystem.

c)       PhonePe Pulse has been received by all the key stakeholders in the ecosystem. As India’s fintech platform we have seen the growth of a unified payments interface (UPI) over the last few years.

d)      UPI has helped with India’s transition to non-cash payments when it comes to both person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions.

e)      UPI saw about a nine times transaction volume increase in the past three years, increasing from five billion transactions in FY19 to about 46 billion transactions in FY22: accounting for more than 60% of non-cash transaction volumes in FY22. This indicates that digital payment has gained acceptance across the country.

 

2. A Manimekhalai appointed as MD of Union Bank: The government has appointed A Manimekhalai as managing director of Union Bank of India. Canara Bank executive director Manimekhalai replaced Rajkiran Rai G, who retired on May 31 after a five-year stint. With her assuming the charge, Manimekhalai becomes the first woman managing director of Union Bank of India.

1. Airtel Payments Bank partnered with Muthoot Finance to offer gold: Airtel Payments Bank has partnered with Muthoot Finance to offer gold loans through Airtel Thanks app. There will be no-processing charge on the loan. Muthoot Finance will provide up to 75 per cent of the pledged gold value as a loan. The loan facility will also be available at the 5 lakh banking points for Airtel Payments Bank. Under the Partnership:

a)      The partnership will give access to secured and affordable credit to customers looking for quick liquidity against their gold assets.

b)      The latest offering, which will add to Airtel Payments Bank’s digital banking product portfolio, would enable easy credit access for the payments bank’s customers.

c)       With this partnership, Airtel Payments Bank customers can get hassle-free gold loans with zero processing fees from Muthoot Finance.

d)      Muthoot Finance gives as much as 75 per cent of the pledged gold value as a loan. Customers get doorstep disbursals for loan amounts of Rs 50,000 and above.

1. IIFA awards 2022: The International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) held in Abu Dhabi. This year the IIFA 2022 Awards was hosted by Salman Khan, Maniesh Paul and Riteish Deshmukh. Sidharth Malhotra’s Shershaah dominated the awards this year, with the film winning in as many as five categories. Sardar Udham, Mimi and Ludo won in two categories each.
