Daily GK Update- 14th June, 2024

 NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Assam Govt. launches scheme to promote Girl education & end child marriage: The Assam government has launched a new scheme Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina (MMNM) to promote girl education and to end child marriage in the state. This was announced by the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after the Assam government cabinet approved the scheme. The scheme is likely to cost the state government Rs 1500 crore for the next five years. The state government has allocated Rs 300 crore for the first year.

 

2. “Billy and Molly: An Otter Love Story” to Open Mumbai Film Festival: National Geographic’s documentary, Billy and Molly: An Otter Love Story, will kick off the screenings at the 18th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) in MIFF is scheduled to be held from 15th June 2024 to 21st June 2024 in Mumbai. The opening film will be screened simultaneously in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Pune on 15th June. The film will also be screened during the Red-Carpet event in Delhi on 17th June, Chennai on 18th June, Kolkata on 19th June, and Pune on 20th June.

 

3. IGNCA Signs MoU with Sansad TV: Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) and Sansad TV signed an agreement to make Indian art and culture more accessible to the people. Under this initiative, programmes produced by IGNCA will be telecast on Sansad TV. The MoU was signed by Member Secretary Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi on behalf of IGNCA and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Rajat Punhani on behalf of Sansad TV.

 

4. FICCI appoints Jyoti Vij as new DG: The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has appointed Jyoti Vij as its Director General. Vij is currently the additional director general at FICCI. She will take charge of the FICCI secretariat with immediate effect. She graduated from Shri Ram College of Commerce in 1988 and later received her master’s in business economics from the University of Delhi in 1990. In 1993, she joined the industry body and has served it in various capacities.

 

5. Sanjeet Kharel Sworn in as Pro-Tem Speaker of Sikkim Legislative Assembly: In Sikkim, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office to Sanjeet Kharel as Pro-Tem Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly at Raj Bhawan in Gangtok. As Pro-Tem Speaker, Kharel will preside over the inaugural session of the 11th Sikkim State Legislative Assembly, including the oath-taking of newly elected members. He represents the Namthang Rateypani constituency.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. PM Modi to participate in G7 outreach Summit at Apulia, Italy: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the G7 Outreach Summit in Apulia, Italy. India has been invited as an outreach country. On the sidelines of his visit, Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings and discussions with the leaders of the G7, the outreach countries, and international organizations. The G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. During the discussions at the outreach session, the focus would be on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean.

 

2. Armenia to leave Russia-led security bloc: Armenia will leave a Russia-led security bloc, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed for the first time, accusing members of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation of having planned a war against his country with Azerbaijan. The CSTO, headquartered in Moscow, also includes Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Belarus. Ties between Russia and Armenia, host to various Russian military facilities, have become increasingly rancorous since Azerbaijan retook its breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh in September last year by force despite the presence there of Russian peacekeepers.

 

3. Kathmandu to host International Tourism Fair: Kathmandu, Nepal will host an international tourism fair aimed at promoting global tourism, sustainable development, and cultural exchange.

The event beginning 15 June will feature tourism entrepreneurs from 16 countries. Countries participating in the fair include Nepal, India, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, the Maldives, the USA, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, China, Thailand, Dubai, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Bhutan.

The fair will showcase over 150 stalls from various countries, fostering international cooperation and sustainable tourism initiatives.

 

4. 14 June – World Blood Donor Day: World Blood Donor Day is observed every year on 14 June.

Objective – To raise awareness about the importance of blood donation and to urge more people to donate blood. Theme 2024 – 20 years of celebrating giving: thank you blood donors. Richard Lower, a biologist, successfully and safely transfused blood between two dogs in 1940. This significant event contributed to the acceptance of blood donation and transfusion as routine medical practices by laying the groundwork for contemporary blood transfusion techniques.

DEFENCE

 

1. Ajit Doval reappointed as NSA; PK Mishra to continue as Principal Sec. to PM Modi: Ajit Doval has been reappointed as the National Security Advisor and Dr PK Mishra as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister with effect from June 10. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointments. The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions said that the appointments of Former IPS Mr Doval and Former IAS Mr Mishra will be co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Both Mr Doval and Mr Mishra will be assigned the rank of a cabinet minister in the table of precedence during their term in office.

 

2. Army launches integrated generator monitoring, control system ‘Vidyut Rakshak’: The Vice Chief of the Indian Army, Upendra Dwivedi has launched Vidyut Rakshak, a new Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled integrated generator tracking, protection, and control system. This was developed by Maj Rajprasad R S and was recently displayed during “Exercise Bharat Shakti,”, which is a big step forward in the Indian Army’s “Year of Tech Absorption.” The system aims to save manpower and signifies the Army’s commitment to leveraging technology for transformative change. Vidyut Rakshak was showcased during Aero India 2023 and has already been inducted into the Indian Army.

 

SPORTS 

 

1. India’s Gulveer Singh clinches Silver Medal in Men’s 5000 Metre Race at Portland Track: In athletics, India’s Gulveer Singh has clinched the silver medal in the Men’s 5000-metre race at the Portland Track Festival High-Performance Meet in Portland, US. The Asian Games bronze medallist also became the fastest Indian in the men’s 5000-metre race. Gulveer clocked the national record timing of 13 minutes 18.92 seconds to surpass the previous record of 13 minutes 19.30 seconds, set by Avinash Sable last year. Dylan Jacobs of USA bagged the gold, while his compatriot Eric Van Der Els won the bronze medal.

 

2. Shruti Vora becomes first Indian Rider to Win 3-Star Grand Prix event: In Equestrian, Shruti Vora scripts history as she becomes the first Indian rider to win a three-star Grand Prix event. Shruti along with her astride Magnanimous, scored 67.761 points in the CDI-3 event in FEI Dressage World Cup held in Lipica, Slovenia. She finished ahead of Moldova’s Tatiana Antonenco, who scored 66.552 points. Veteran rider Shruti Vora has also represented India in Dressage World Championship 2022 and in the Asian Games of 2010 and 2014.

1. Prem Prabhakar appointed MD and CEO of SBICAP Ventures Limited: Prem Prabhakar has been appointed as MD and CEO of SBICAP Ventures Limited. In his new role, Prabhakar will be responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, operational efficiency and overall growth of the company. He will lead the executive team, manage investor relations, and drive initiatives that align with SVL’s commitment to creating long-term value for its investors and supporting the communities in which it operates. Prabhakar brings over 24 years of extensive experience in the banking sector. Prior to this appointment, he served as General Manager at the State Bank of India (SBI).
