NATIONAL UPDATES:
1. Female Labour Force Participation Rate Jumps to 37.0%:
According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey Report 2022-23,
the Female Labour Force Participation Rate in the country has
improved significantly by 4.2 percentage points to 37.0% in 2023. It is an
outcome of the decisive agenda set by the Government for ensuring women’s
empowerment through policy initiatives aimed at their long-term socio-economic
and political development.
2. Bhopal’s Mahila Thana become country’s first to get
ISO certification: The Mahila thana of Bhopal became the first women-centric
police station across the entire country to be conferred with
the International Organization for Standardization certificate. Bhopal
Mahila thana has been improved a lot on its part in registering grievances of
the complainants, comforting them and probing cases. The ISO certification is a
testament to the station’s commitment to improving its services and facilities,
ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency.
3. Odisha CM launches LAccMI public transport system: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik of
Odisha launched the Location Accessible Multimodal
Initiative (LAccMI) scheme from Malkangiri to connect panchayat
and block headquarters with district headquarters by bus. The chief minister
had launched schemes like rice at Rs 1 per kg and Biju Swasthya Kalyan
Yojana (BSKY) from Malkangiri. Aim: To enhance health insurance for
women to Rs 10 lakh had been received from Malkangiri.
4. Army establishes first-ever BSNL BTS on Siachen
Glacier: The Indian Army has
established the world's first mobile tower and base transceiver station (BTS)
on the Siachen Glacier It is the highest battlefield on Earth, with the help of
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). Aim: To provide mobile communication
services to soldiers at an altitude of over 15,500 feet. A base transceiver
station is a radio transceiver that connects mobile devices to a cellular
network.
5. Union Minister launches dashboard for Data on Adoption
and Forecasts: Power and New and Renewable
Energy Minister RK Singh launched the EV-Ready India Dashboard in New Delhi. Addressing
the occasion, the Minister asserted that the future is going to be electric. The
dashboard has forecast a 45 per cent growth in electric vehicles by 2030. According
to the Power and New and Renewable Energy Ministry, the dashboard is a free
digital platform focusing on near real-time electric vehicle adoption and
forecasts
6. 16th edition of Landscape and Gardening Expo 2023 in
Mumbai: The 16th edition of Landscape and Gardening
Expo 2023 was inaugurated by actress Varsha Usgaonkar in Mumbai.
This
is the first time that Mumbai is hosting such an expo that will see
participation from firms dealing in horticulture development, Darjeeling orchid
plants, bonsai, ornamental flowers, green roof systems, nursery products, soil
substitutes, etc. To add value a ‘Global Conference on Urban Green Living
Concepts’ has also been planned for the Landscape, Golf Courses, and Sports
Infrastructure industry. With an aesthetically appealing landscape, trees, and
potted plants being high in demand in Mumbai and its suburbs, the expo aims to
promote the idea of green living and popularize the concept of vertical gardening.
The three-day expo, being held at the Bombay Exhibition Center, NESCO in
Goregaon has been jointly organized by the gardens department of Municipal
Corporation of Greater Mumbai, World Council on Urban Green Living Concepts,
and Tree Culture.
7. B K Mohanty assumes charge as Director of Finance at
IREDA: Bijay Kumar
Mohanty has been appointed as the Director of Finance of the Indian
Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA). Mohanty is a senior finance
professional with experience of over 25 years in the Indian power sector. The
appointment of Dr. Mohanty as Director (Finance) of IREDA was approved by the
Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). Mohanty has been appointed to the
post for 5 years from the date he assumed charge or until further orders,
whichever is earlier. Prior to joining IREDA, he held the position of Head of
Department and Senior General Manager (Finance & Accounts) at REC
Limited.
8. Indian Army wins gold medal in Cambrian Patrol 2023
military exercise: The Indian Army has won a gold medal at the Cambrian Patrol
Competition 2023 International Military Exercise in Wales, UK. A team from 3/5
Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force) represented the Indian Army at the prestigious
Cambrian Patrol Exercise in Wales, UK, the Army said. The Indian Army team
participated in the event and competed against a total of 111 teams, which
included 38 international teams representing special forces and prestigious
regiments from around the world. Exercise Cambrian Patrol, organized by the UK
Army, is considered the ultimate test of human endurance and team spirit and is
sometimes referred to as the Olympics of Military Patrolling among militaries
in the world. In the year 2021, the Indian Army also won a gold medal at the
Cambrian Patrol Exercise held in the UK while competing against 96 teams
including 17 international teams representing Special Forces and prestigious
Regiments from around the world.
INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:
1. International Day for Eradicating Poverty is observed
on 17th October: The International Day for the
Eradication of Poverty is celebrated on 17th October to serve
as a reminder that poverty is a complicated, multifaceted problem This year's
theme is 'Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting Dignity in Practice
for All.' Aim: To promote understanding and dialogue between people living
in poverty and society at large. The day highlights the value of
cooperation, human rights, and social justice in the fight against poverty.
2. India, UK Hold Inaugural '2+2' Foreign, Defence
Dialogue In Delhi: The inaugural India-UK '2+2' foreign and defence dialogue saw the two
sides focusing on ways to boost cooperation in a range of key areas such as
trade and investment, defence, critical technologies, civil aviation, health
and energy. Aim: To discuss and review all aspects of the India-UK
comprehensive strategic partnership. Discussed international developments
including in the Indo-Pacific region and considered the possibility of
enhancing anti-terror collaboration
3. Jaishankar co-chairs meeting of 18th India-Vietnam
Joint Commission: External Affairs Minister Dr S
Jaishankar has co-chaired the meeting of the 18th India-Vietnam Joint
Commission in Hanoi with his Vietnamese counterpart Bui Thanh Son. The
discussions covered cooperation in political, defense, and maritime security,
judicial, trade and investment, energy, development, education and training,
science and technology, and cultural domains. India-Vietnam’s Comprehensive
Strategic Partnership will only further strengthen over the coming years. They
also shared perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region, commitment to global
issues, and collaboration in various multilateral groupings. Dr Jaishankar also
jointly unveiled the commemorative stamps celebrating 50 years of the
establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Vietnam with his
counterpart.
4. 16 October – World Anaesthesia Day: World Anaesthesia Day is observed
on October 16 every year. Objective – To raise awareness about the
importance of anaesthesia in medical treatments. It also supports anaesthesia
providers around the world to celebrate their profession. Theme 2023
– Anaesthesia and Cancer Care World Anaesthesia Day marks the birth of
anaesthesia. Anaesthesia was first used on October 16, 1846. The first
successful demonstration of ether anaesthesia was performed by William Thomas
Green Morton (1819-1868) at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, USA.
5. 17 October – International Day for the Eradication of
Poverty: International Day for the
Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every year on 17 October. The
day is dedicated to create awareness and promote global measures for the
prevention of poverty. Theme 2023 – Decent Work and Social Protection:
Putting Dignity in Practice for All One of the major challenges in the world
that needs to be addressed for the betterment of society is Poverty. The
International Poverty Eradication Day is an opportunity to highlight the
problems faced by underprivileged people in their day-to-day lives, and provide
necessary support to them. The observance of this day traces its roots back to
October 17, 1987, when a gathering at the Trocadero in Paris proclaimed poverty
as a violation of human rights. The UN General Assembly officially declared
October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty through
resolution 47/196 on 22 December 1992

1. Former England captain Alastair Cook announces
retirement: Former England captain Alastair Cook, his
country’s record test run scorer, announced his retirement from
professional cricket.
The
38-year-old left-handed opener, who retired from international cricket in 2018,
played his entire county career with Essex. Cook was England test captain from
2012 to 2017 and also captain for 69 one day internationals from 2010-14. He
scored 766 runs in seven innings during the 2010-11 Ashes tour to help England
to their first series win in Australia for 24 years.
2. Raunak Sadhwani won FIDE World Junior Rapid Chess
Championship: 17-year-old Raunak
Sadhwani has won the U-20 World Junior Rapid Chess Championship in
Sardinia, Italy. Raunak scored 8.5 over 11 rounds to win the Championship ahead
of Arseniy Nesterov of Russia, who scored 8. Raunak became a grandmaster at the
age of 13. He is the ninth youngest player in history and the fourth youngest
Indian to be awarded the title. Raunak – Maharashtra’s youngest and Nagpur’s
only Grandmaster (GM) – helped world no. 1 Magnus Carlsen lift his maiden
European title.

1. ADB Invests $181 Million to Improve Ahmedabad’s
Peri-urban Areas: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved
a USD 181 million loan to build quality infrastructure and services toward
improving urban livability and mobility in the peri-urban areas of Ahmedabad ADB
will help strengthen the capacity of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority
and urban local bodies in technology-based urban planning, including climate
change Aim: To promote environmental and social safeguards, gender equality and
social inclusion

1. Rocketry has been adjudged as the Best Feature Film in
69th National Film: 'Rocketry: The Nambi Effect' directed by
R Madhavan has been adjudged as the Best Feature Film in the 69th National
Film Awards. President Droupadi Murmu will confer the 69th National Film Awards
in New Delhi. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur will be
the Guest of Honour. Allu Arjun has won the Best Actor Award for
'Pushpa: The Rise'. Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon will share the
Best Actress Award for 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' and 'Mimi'.
2. Indian Railways’ PSUs, RITES Ltd and IRCON granted
Navratna status: Ircon International Limited
(IRCON) and RITES Ltd both Central Public Sector Enterprise have been announced
as 15th and 16thNavratna respectively among CPSEs. The Ministry of
Finance conferred ‘Navratna’ status on RITES and IRCON. Entering its 50th year
of incorporation, RITES Ltd is a leading transport infrastructure consultancy
and engineering firm in India The companies should benefit in enhancing the
market credibility and in undertaking larger size PPP projects
3. UP bags award for using tele technology for mental
health & counselling: Uttar Pradesh has
bagged the third prize in operationalizing telemanas- using tele technology
for mental health and counselling – on the National Mental Health Day. The
award was given by ministry of health and family welfare, Government of India.
Mission director, National Health Mission Uttar Pradesh, Dr Pinky Joval
received the award. The UP team will strive to do even better and be the top
state in this area in the coming year. An urgent need was felt for a digital
mental health network in the state to provide tele-mental health care services
to the masses, with the objective to provide 24X7 mental health care services
even in the remote parts of the country.
OBITUARIES
1. Padma Shri awardee, Dahyabhai Shastri passes away: Padma Shri awardee, Dahyabhai Shastri, an Indian scholar of Sanskrit and the founder of Brahmarshi Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, Nadiad, passed away. He is also a former president of the Gujarat state unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. He was actively working towards the expansion and education of Sanskrit language throughout.
