NATIONAL UPDATES:
1. Major State Renaming Cases in India: The renaming of Indian states is governed by Article 3 of the Constitution and requires Parliament’s approval. Over the years, several states and Union Territories have changed their names to reflect linguistic identity, cultural sentiment, and administrative clarity. A state renaming usually changes the First Schedule; the Fourth Schedule is altered when Rajya Sabha seat allocation details are involved. This was one of the few renamings that also corrected the official spelling of the associated language in the Constitution. The President must seek the State Legislature’s views, but Parliament can still proceed even if the opinion is adverse. The renaming followed Article 3 procedure and did not require a constitutional amendment under Article 368.
2. Major Biochar Uses and Applications in Agriculture: Biochar is a carbon-rich material made by heating organic biomass in low-oxygen conditions. In agriculture, it is used to improve soil health, manage waste biomass, and store carbon for long periods. Biochar contains a dense network of micropores, mesopores, and macropores. This structure gives it a very high surface area and provides habitat for beneficial soil microbes. Acidic soils limit plant growth and reduce nutrient availability. Biochar acts like a natural liming agent by raising soil pH and improving the availability of nutrients such as phosphorus and calcium. Biochar reduces the bulk density of heavy clay soils, improving aggregation, infiltration, and aeration. In sandy soils, it helps bind loose particles and reduces wind and water erosion.
3. Kerala Officially Renamed Keralam: Kerala was officially renamed Keralam through The Kerala (Alteration of Name) Act, 2026, which altered the State’s entry in the First Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The change followed the constitutional procedure under Article 3, which governs the formation of new States and the alteration of names and areas of existing States. Article 3 of the Indian Constitution empowers Parliament to alter the name of a State after referring the proposal to the concerned State Legislature for its views. The President of India must refer such a Bill to the State Legislature before Parliament considers it for enactment. The Union Cabinet approved the proposal on 24 February 2026. The Kerala Legislative Assembly accepted the draft proposal in July 2026. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai introduced the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha on 10 August 2026.
4. ICAR-CCARI Launches Carbon Pathshala for Goa Farmers: ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI), Goa, organised a one-day workshop titled “Carbon Pathshala: Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) for Farmers” at ICAR-KVK, Old Goa, on 21 August 2026. The programme was held with Core CarbonX Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad, under a research project on plantation-based systems, biochar production, and carbon credit generation in the west coast region of India. The voluntary carbon market is a trading system in which carbon credits are bought and sold outside mandatory compliance frameworks. One carbon credit generally represents one metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent reduced, removed, or avoided through a verified project. Carbon sequestration is the capture and storage of atmospheric carbon in biomass, soils, or other reservoirs. Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced by heating organic matter in limited oxygen, and it is used in soil management and carbon storage projects.
5. Researchers Discover New Sunflower Species in Arunachal Pradesh: Researchers from the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), based in Himachal Pradesh, identified a new plant species of the sunflower family in Arunachal Pradesh. The species was named Doronicum sanctum and was formally described in a study published on 11 August 2026 in a Springer Nature journal. The species was recorded in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh at an elevation reported between about 4,000 metres and 4,086 metres above sea level. The type locality lies near the Chumi Gyatse Holy Waterfalls, a site associated with local religious traditions in the eastern Himalayas. Doronicum sanctum belongs to the genus Doronicum, which is commonly called Leopard’s Bane. The genus is part of the family Asteraceae, one of the largest flowering plant families, and it includes many herbaceous species found in temperate and alpine regions.
6. Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission Launches Seven Nitrosamine Standards: The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, launched seven Indian Pharmacopoeia Nitrosamine Impurities Reference Standards on 25 August 2026. The launch took place during the IPC’s first interactive meeting at the Central Drugs Laboratory and Central Cosmetics Laboratory in Kolkata, West Bengal. The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission is the national body responsible for setting standards for drugs in India. It functions under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and works on pharmacopoeial standards, reference materials, and quality control for medicines. Nitrosamines are a class of chemical compounds known for genotoxic and carcinogenic properties. They can form unintentionally during manufacturing, packaging, storage, or through contamination in pharmaceutical products.
7. Important Internal Security Institutions and Coordination Mechanisms in India: India’s internal security system works through coordination among national agencies, state police, intelligence platforms, and specialized forces to handle terrorism, extremism, cyber threats, and border-related challenges. It was strengthened after the Kargil Review Committee highlighted the need for better intelligence sharing. The Intelligence Bureau is often described as one of the oldest intelligence organisations in the world. India’s coastal security system involves the Navy, Coast Guard, and Coastal Police in distinct roles. NCIIPC focuses not on physical assets alone but on digital systems that support essential services. INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:
1. Nepal Flash Floods Hit Bhote Koshi and Trishuli Rivers: A sudden flash flood swept through Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems on 26 August 2026. The flood affected the Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts, and it caused deaths, missing-person cases, damage to roads and bridges, and disruption to cross-border movement. The Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers are part of the Himalayan river network in central Nepal. The affected districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading lie in a mountainous zone where steep slopes, narrow valleys and glacial or snow-fed streams can increase flood velocity. Flash floods in Himalayan terrain often carry water, mud, rocks and debris. Such flows can damage settlements, bridges, hydropower projects and road links within a short time. Local authorities and geological experts linked the flood to a possible landslide or an ice-rock avalanche in Tibet after a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. A flash flood is a rapid rise of water level that occurs within a short period, usually after intense rainfall, slope failure, glacier collapse or sudden release of water from a natural barrier.
2. ICAT Issues First Certificate for 15-Metre Sleeper Bus: The International Centre for Automotive Technology issued its first compliance certificate for a 15-metre multi-axle sleeper bus on 26 August 2026 in Manesar, Haryana. The certificate was awarded to Synaty Automotive Pvt. Ltd. under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules framework and the applicable AIS-119 and AIS-153 standards. A 15-metre bus is one of the longest permissible bus body configurations in India’s passenger transport category. The certified vehicle was developed as a multi-axle sleeper bus for long-distance passenger transport. The vehicle was certified under AIS-119 and AIS-153, which are Automotive Industry Standards used for bus body construction and safety-related requirements in India. The testing process covered structural strength, fire safety, emergency safety, passenger movement, and travel comfort.
3. Popular Resistance, Famine and Colonial State Formation: The Sannyasi-Fakir Rebellion of late eighteenth-century Bengal illustrates how early colonial taxation, devastating famine, and livelihood crises transformed rural society. This resistance challenged British administrative structures, proving that popular rebellion emerged directly from economic survival struggles. The Sannyasi-Fakir Rebellion (circa 1763–1800) in Bengal and Bihar was triggered by aggressive East India Company (EIC) revenue extraction following its acquisition of Diwani rights via the 1765 Treaty of Allahabad. The new colonial state’s demands quickly collided with traditional agrarian and social structures. This was not a simple peasant revolt. It brought together wandering Hindu sannyasis of the Dasanami sect, Muslim fakirs of the Madariya order, displaced cultivators, ruined zamindars, and unemployed soldiers. The EIC restricted the free movement of these nomadic groups, labeled them “lawless mendicants,” and imposed heavy taxes on pilgrimage routes. Their shared grievance was severe economic distress as colonial policies disrupted seasonal migration, pilgrimage, and traditional patronage.
4. HAL and Safran Sign Aravalli Helicopter Engine Contract: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines signed a final contract in Bengaluru on 26 August 2026 to develop and produce a new high-power turboshaft engine for 13-tonne helicopters. The agreement was signed through SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd. (SAFHAL), a joint venture between HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines. The new engine has been named Aravalli after the Indian mountain range. It is designed for the 3,500 to 4,000 shaft horsepower power class, which places it in the high-power segment of helicopter propulsion systems. The contract covers design, development, manufacture, supply, and lifecycle support of the engine. The Aravalli engine has been selected for HAL’s planned Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH). The IMRH is a 13-tonne class helicopter programme, and the DBMRH is intended for shipborne operations in the Indian Navy.
5. India and Seychelles Strengthen Cooperation in Fisheries, Aquaculture and Blue Economy: India and Seychelles held a bilateral meeting in New Delhi on 25 August 2026 to expand cooperation in fisheries, aquaculture, and the blue economy. The talks were led by Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary of the Department of Fisheries, and H.E. Mr. Wallace Cosgrow, Seychelles’ Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy. The two sides discussed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding focused on fisheries and aquaculture. The agenda included marine aquaculture, also called mariculture, modern hatchery development, tuna fisheries optimisation, and fish stock assessment. Mariculture is the cultivation of marine organisms in seawater, and hatcheries are facilities where fish seed or larvae are produced under controlled conditions. Fish stock assessment is a scientific method used to estimate the size, structure, and sustainability of fish populations.
6. India Plans 100 New Ships to Cut Freight Bill: India plans to add 100 new vessels to its merchant fleet over the next five years to reduce dependence on foreign shipping lines for carrying critical cargo such as crude oil, gas, coal and urea. The announcement was made on 25 August 2026 at the inaugural Sagar Samvad conference in New Delhi, which was organised by the National Shipping Board to discuss policy directions for Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. India’s domestic merchant fleet currently has about 1,600 flagged vessels. A flagged vessel is a ship registered under a country’s flag and governed by its maritime laws, taxation rules and safety regulations. India pays nearly $75 billion every year to foreign shipping lines for transporting import cargo and other critical freight. The cargo mix includes crude oil, liquefied gas, coal and fertiliser inputs such as urea, which are major items in India’s external trade and energy supply chain.

DEFENCE
1. Major High-Altitude Locations of India for Defence Operations: India’s high-altitude defence network spans the Himalayas and supports border security, logistics, air operations, and rapid troop movement in some of the world’s toughest terrain. Any military outpost situated above 9,000 feet is classified as a high-altitude area. India maintains one of the largest networks of high-altitude military bases in the world. These locations stretch across the union territory of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. They help secure India’s borders along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. Operating in these terrains requires specialized training, custom equipment, and strong logistics infrastructure. The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram Range of the Himalayas. It is widely recognized as the highest active battlefield on Earth.
2. Indian Coast Guard, Vietnam Coast Guard Hold 7th High-Level Meeting: The Indian Coast Guard and the Vietnam Coast Guard held their 7th High-Level Meeting at the Coast Guard Regional Headquarters in Chennai on 25 August 2026. The meeting was held under the 2015 Memorandum of Understanding on Coast Guard Cooperation and was co-chaired by Indian Coast Guard Director General Paramesh Sivamani and Vietnam Coast Guard Vice Commandant Major General Luong Dinh Hung. 1. Major Aircraft Engines and Propulsion Types: Aircraft propulsion systems create the thrust needed to overcome drag and move an aircraft forward. They are broadly classified by how they obtain oxygen for combustion, and by the speed regime in which they operate. Aircraft propulsion systems generate the thrust necessary to overcome aerodynamic drag and move an aircraft through the air. This process relies on Newton’s second and third laws of motion. Thrust is produced by accelerating a mass of air or gas in the direction opposite to flight. An engine can generate thrust either by accelerating a large mass of air to a low velocity, as seen in propeller systems, or by accelerating a small mass of gas to a very high velocity, as seen in jet engines.
2. Astronauts Install Ku-band Antenna on ISS: NASA astronaut Anil Menon and European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot completed a 6.5-hour extravehicular activity outside the International Space Station on 25 August 2026. The operation was designated U.S. Spacewalk 98 and ended at 2:57 p.m. EDT after beginning at about 8:27 a.m. EDT. The International Space Station uses space-to-ground communication systems for voice, telemetry, and data transfer. A Ku-band antenna is a high-frequency microwave antenna used for high-speed communication links between spacecraft and ground stations. The astronauts installed and connected a replacement Ku-band communication antenna on the Z1 truss segment of the ISS. The Z1 truss is an external structural element on the station that supports communication and power-related hardware.
3. Types of Technology Transfer in Defence Sector: Technology transfer in the defence sector is the structured sharing of design, manufacturing, testing, and integration know-how from a developer to another entity for licensed production. It helps build domestic capability, reduce import dependence, and support self-reliance in military manufacturing. This transfer occurs between entities at different stages of the research and production chain. It usually moves technology from government research laboratories to commercial manufacturers. An example is the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) transferring conventional missile designs to private industries for mass production. This transfer occurs between entities operating at similar stages of the production or supply chain. It can happen between two defence companies or across different countries. An example is the transfer of manufacturing technology from a foreign Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to a domestic Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU).

1. India’s Rice Exports to 26 Priority Markets Rise: India’s rice exports to 26 priority markets reached ₹23,476 crore and 4.79 million tonnes between November 2025 and March 2026. The Indian Rice Exporters Federation analysed the data on 26 August 2026 and compared the five-month period with the corresponding three-year average. Rice is a major agricultural export of India and includes basmati rice and non-basmati rice. India is one of the world’s largest rice producers and exporters, and rice trade is closely linked with agricultural pricing, logistics, and food processing. The export value to the 26 priority markets rose by 1.1% and export volume increased by 5.6% over the three-year average. The United Arab Emirates recorded the highest year-on-year export value growth at 65%, reaching ₹3,859.04 crore, while its export volume rose by 64%.
2. Supreme Court Refines Industry Test Under Industrial Disputes Act: On 20 August 2026, a nine-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court of India delivered a 489-page judgment in State of Uttar Pradesh v. Jai Bir Singh on the legal meaning of “industry” under Section 2(j) of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947. The Bench ruled by a 5:4 majority that the 1978 Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board v. A. Rajappa framework remains valid, but needs refinement with greater weight on the commercial character of an establishment. Section 2(j) of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 defined “industry” for labour adjudication until the Act was replaced by the Industrial Relations Code, 2020. The provision was central to deciding whether an establishment fell within the labour law framework for disputes, retrenchment, and industrial adjudication.
