Kakatiya Dynasty and Heritage Sites in Telangana: The Kakatiyas were a powerful medieval dynasty of the eastern Deccan, remembered for strong administration, temple-building, water management, and a rich architectural legacy in present-day Telangana. The Kakatiya dynasty ruled the eastern Deccan region between the 12th and 14th centuries. Their territory covered modern-day Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and parts of eastern Karnataka and southern Odisha. They began as feudatories of the Rashtrakutas and Western Chalukyas before becoming independent rulers. He was the first fully sovereign ruler of the dynasty. He declared independence in 1163 CE and built the Thousand Pillar Temple at Hanamkonda. He ruled for more than sixty years, united the Telugu-speaking regions, and shifted the capital from Hanamkonda to Orugallu (modern Warangal).

Important Concepts in Indian Calendar and Astronomy: Indian astronomy, or Jyotisha, developed as a Vedanga for calculating ritual timings and later formed the basis of calendar systems, astronomical texts, and observatories across India. Astronomy in ancient India, known as Jyotisha, developed as an auxiliary discipline to the Vedas. It is one of the six Vedangas and helped determine the exact timings of Vedic rituals and sacrifices. Over time, observations of celestial bodies evolved into systematic mathematical methods. The Indian calendar system, or Panchanga, coordinates astronomical calculations with civil timekeeping by tracking solar and lunar movements. This text dates back to the 4th or 5th century CE. It details planetary motions, solar and lunar eclipses, and introduces advanced trigonometric functions like sine (jya) and versine (kotijya).

Supreme Court Directs Tamil Nadu on Fishing Vessel Transit Rules: The Supreme Court of India on 2 September 2026 directed the Tamil Nadu government to frame rules for a specified channel for fishing vessels to transit through territorial waters to the Exclusive Economic Zone. The bench comprised Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, and the matter concerned access for vessels carrying purse seine nets. India’s territorial waters extend up to 12 nautical miles from the baseline, and the Exclusive Economic Zone extends up to 200 nautical miles from the coast under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea framework. Fishing within 12 nautical miles in Tamil Nadu is regulated by the Tamil Nadu Marine Fishing Regulation Rules, 2020, while offshore fishing beyond 12 nautical miles is governed by the central Exclusive Economic Zone Rules, 2025.

Abhinandan Varthaman Joins Goa-based airline FLY91 as Pilot: Abhinandan Varthaman, a former Indian Air Force Group Captain, joined the Goa-based regional airline FLY91 as a commercial pilot in 2026. He retired from military aviation on 31 March 2026 after nearly 22 years of service and later moved to civil aviation. Abhinandan Varthaman served in the Indian Air Force for nearly 22 years before his premature retirement in 2026. He flew combat aircraft during his service and became widely known after an aerial engagement on 27 February 2019 over the Line of Control. On 27 February 2019, Varthaman flew a MiG-21 Bison during a dogfight over the Line of Control and shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet. He was later captured in Pakistan for three days after ejecting from his damaged aircraft.

Districts As Export Hubs: The Districts As Export Hubs (DEH) initiative is a decentralized trade promotion framework that aims to turn every district in India into an export-oriented centre by identifying local products and services with global demand. Implemented by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the initiative seeks to connect local producers, farmers, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with international markets. It aligns with the Foreign Trade Policy 2023, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and the Vocal for Local campaign. India’s export growth has traditionally been concentrated in a limited number of districts. Around 70 developed districts account for nearly 80 percent of the country’s merchandise exports. The DEH initiative addresses this imbalance by spreading export-related opportunities to rural and remote regions. By early 2026, it had expanded to more than 770 districts across the country. It functions as a convergence platform rather than a separate funding scheme, coordinating existing central and state programmes to improve local competitiveness and remove infrastructure bottlenecks.

2. Flightless Birds and Their Adaptations: Flightless birds are avian species that lost the ability to fly through evolution. They survive by developing strong legs, specialized feathers, and other adaptations suited to running, swimming, digging, or living on predator-free islands. Islands such as New Zealand, Mauritius, and the Galápagos lacked mammalian predators for long periods, reducing the need for flight. Flightless birds are especially vulnerable to introduced predators because they evolved in predator-free environments. The extinct elephant bird (Aepyornis) of Madagascar laid the largest eggs of any known animal, with a capacity of about 9 liters.

The species is the world’s heaviest parrot and had crossed 300 birds for the first time in about 75 years by 31 August 2026. The Kākāpō Recovery Programme was launched in 1995 by the New Zealand Department of Conservation when only 51 kākāpō survived, including 20 females. The programme uses intensive monitoring, predator control, supplementary feeding, and managed breeding to support population growth. In the 2026 breeding season, 79 female kākāpō nested, 258 eggs were laid, 106 chicks hatched, and 90 chicks survived to 150 days of age.
