NATIONAL UPDATES:
1. Tamil Nadu Notifies Three New Elephant Corridors: Tamil Nadu notified three new elephant corridors on 28 August 2026 in the Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary in the Hosur Forest Division. The corridors are part of the trans-Cauvery movement route used by Asian elephants and other large mammals between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. An elephant corridor is a narrow strip of habitat that connects two larger forest areas used by elephants for seasonal movement. India has several recognised elephant landscapes, including the Western Ghats, the Eastern Ghats, the North Bengal landscape, and the Brahmaputra valley.
2. Uttar Pradesh completes Ganga floodplain demarcation: Uttar Pradesh completed the physical demarcation of the 700-kilometre Ganga River floodplain zone across 13 districts from Unnao to Ballia. The boundary work was marked on the ground with 7,350 pillars, and the status was placed before the National Green Tribunal in August 2026. The National Green Tribunal is a statutory environmental adjudicatory body established under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010. The bench that took note of the completion included Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Afroz Ahmad. The Chief Engineer of the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation and Water Resource Department filed a status affidavit to confirm the completion of the boundary work.
3. FSSAI Proposes Front-of-Pack Warning Labels: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed mandatory front-of-pack warning labels for packaged foods high in sugar, salt and saturated fat. The proposal was placed before the Supreme Court of India in a compliance affidavit and includes red-coloured, hexagonal warning symbols for specified food products. Front-of-pack labelling is a nutrition labelling system placed on the principal display panel of packaged food. It is used in many countries to provide quick information on nutrients such as sugar, salt, fat and energy. In the FSSAI proposal, the labels will carry bold pictorial declarations such as “HIGH FAT”, “HIGH SUGAR”, “HIGH SALT” and “HIGHLY SWEETENED BEVERAGE”. The font size of the warning label must be at least one point larger than the font size used in the back-of-pack nutrition information table.
4. IIT Madras Launches Phiball Three-Team Basketball Format: IIT Madras launched Phiball on 28 August 2026 on its Chennai campus. Phiball is a three-team competitive invasion sport with rules designed for lower space and infrastructure requirements than conventional basketball. Phiball uses three competing teams in each match. Each team has seven registered players, including four active on-field players and three substitutes. The game is played over three eight-minute quarters, and each basket carries one to three points. Teams rotate the basket they defend after each quarter. The sport was developed over two months of rule-planning with basketball coaches. Its design drew initial inspiration from OmegaBall, a three-team football format introduced by IIT Madras on 17 April 2026. OmegaBall is another multi-team invasion game associated with the institute’s sports innovation work.
5. President Murmu Clears Way for Ladakh High Court Bench: President Droupadi Murmu promulgated the Union Territory of Ladakh (Sitting of Bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Ladakh) Regulation, 2026, on 27 August 2026. The regulation was issued under Article 240 of the Constitution and Section 58(2) of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, to create a legal framework for High Court sittings in Ladakh. Article 240 of the Constitution empowers the President to make regulations for certain Union territories, including Ladakh. Section 58(2) of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, provides the statutory basis for arrangements relating to the common High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
6. Major Elephant Landscapes of India: The Asian elephant is India’s National Heritage Animal and is protected as an Endangered species. India manages elephant conservation through landscape-level planning, corridor protection, and inter-state coordination across major habitat blocks. The Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) is India’s National Heritage Animal, a status designated in 2010. It serves as a keystone species and an ecological engineer. Its movements help disperse seeds, clear pathways, and create water holes used by other wildlife. Elephants are wide-ranging mammals. A single herd may need a home range from 250 sq km to more than 3,500 sq km, depending on habitat quality. This makes landscape-level conservation more effective than isolated protected areas. Elephant landscapes are defined by ecological boundaries rather than administrative boundaries. They integrate national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, reserved forests, and human-use areas into continuous conservation zones. India currently manages its wild elephant population across 10 distinct landscapes, covering 33 notified Elephant Reserves across 14 states.
INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:
1. India, Uzbekistan Elevate Ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Sign MoUs Across Various Sectors: India and Uzbekistan announced to elevate their mutual Strategic Partnership to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership level. The Central Asian country also agreed to establish a framework for long-term supply of uranium to India and discuss the sites of the mining for rare earth minerals. India and Uzbekistan signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) in various sectors, including Mining, Ayurveda, Tourism, Economic and financial dialogue, Comprehensive and strategic partnership, Higher education and the environment. Both Countries agreed to set a target of 5 billion dollars of bilateral trade by 2030, which is 5 times the current trade.
2. Peyman Kargar named TVS Motor Company’s next CEO: TVS Motor Company has appointed Peyman Kargar as its next Director and CEO. He will take over from K N Radhakrishnan on January 27, 2027.
Peyman Kargar joined TVS in 2025. He is currently the president of international business. Radhakrishnan will continue as CEO until January 27 and later serve as a non-executive director until the company’s AGM in July 2027. Kargar has more than three decades of experience in the automotive industry. He has worked in various domains, including product development, research and development, manufacturing, quality, sales and marketing, and international business operations.
3. Norway’s King Harald dies at 89: Norway’s King Harald V has died at the age of 89 succeeded by son (Prince Haakon). He became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V.
King Harald remained monarch during decades of economic growth largely driven by Norway’s oil and gas sector.
4. Uganda’s King Oyo Nyimba Dies at 34: A traditional Ugandan ruler named as the world’s youngest monarch has died aged 34. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV became king of Tooro in western Uganda at just three years old in 1995 after the death of his father. The Tooro kingdom did not disclose the cause of King Oyo’s death. Though Uganda is governed by an elected president and parliament, it has several traditional kingdoms which continue to have significant cultural influence despite not having political power.
5. International Day Against Nuclear Tests 2026 – August 29: The International Day against Nuclear Tests is observed annually on August 29 to raise global awareness about the devastating health and environmental impacts of nuclear weapon test explosions. The theme highlighted for the International Day Against Nuclear Tests focuses on nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and choosing restraint over ruin.
6. India, China Agree on Eight-Point Boundary Consensus: India and China reached an eight-point consensus during the 25th Round of Talks between the Special Representatives on the Boundary Question in Beijing on 25 August 2026. The talks were co-chaired by India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The eight-point consensus covered peace and tranquillity along border areas and sought to reduce friction along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The LAC is the de facto boundary between India and China and is not a formally demarcated international border. The two sides agreed to use existing diplomatic and military channels to address ground situations promptly. These channels include local commander-level meetings, which are used for communication between field formations on both sides.
7. Trump Announces US Control of Venezuelan Oil Reserves: The United States and Venezuela announced a major oil agreement on 28 August 2026 involving more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s proven oil reserves. The arrangement was linked to a private joint venture, a 100-year concession, and a reported U.S. majority stake of 55% through equity and access to oil at cost. Venezuela has the world’s largest proven oil reserves, estimated at more than 300 billion barrels in many standard reference works, with the Orinoco Belt forming a major part of these deposits. Proven reserves are quantities of crude oil that geological and engineering data show can be recovered under existing economic and operating conditions.

DEFENCE
1. India, Kuwait hold first Joint Defence Committee meeting: The inaugural meeting of the India-Kuwait Joint Defence Committee (JDC) was held in New Delhi. During the meeting, both countries agreed to further strengthen the bilateral defence cooperation across a wide range of areas, including training, military exercises, military medicine, staff talks, defence industry, and Research and Development. The first meeting of the JDC marked an important step towards operationalising the objectives outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation between India and Kuwait, signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kuwait in December 2024.
2. India Signs Javelin Missile Deal with United States: The Indian Army has signed a US Foreign Military Sales Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LoA) to procure nearly 100 FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank guided missile systems worth $93 million. Around 100 Javelin missile rounds, 25 command launch units, simulation rounds, and M982A1 Excalibur precision-guided artillery shells. Executed via the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) emergency procurement process
SPORTS
1. Gujarat launches first state-level sports genomics programme: Gujarat has launched a pioneering sports genomics programme for athletes. This initiative aims to understand genetic and physiological characteristics for better development. Scientific athlete profiling will support national and international competition readiness. The programme is significant for Gujarat’s 2030 Commonwealth Games preparations. It introduces a new scientific dimension to athlete training and potential.
2. Velavan Senthilkumar wins PSA Budapest Squash Open title in Hungary: India’s Velavan Senthilkumar won the PSA Budapest Squash Open title in Hungary after defeating home favourite Balazs Farkas 3-0 in the final. He had an impressive run to the title, beating World No. 18 and Asian Games gold medallist Eain Yow Ng 3-0 in the quarterfinals before overcoming fellow Indian Veer Chotrani 3-2 in a thrilling semifinal. Senthilkumar capped his remarkable week with a dominant performance in the final.
3. India Women’s Hockey Team Gets ₹50 Lakh Reward: Hockey India announced a cash reward of ₹50 lakh for the Indian women’s hockey team on 28 August 2026 after its campaign at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup. The team finished fifth in Amstelveen, Netherlands, on 27 August 2026, which was India’s best World Cup finish in 52 years since the fourth-place result in 1974. The FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup is the premier international tournament for women’s field hockey under the International Hockey Federation. Teams that do not reach the medal rounds play classification matches to determine final positions such as fifth place, sixth place, and lower rankings.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
1. Telangana Launches Devadurga Gold and Copper Exploration: Telangana launched a gold and copper mining exploration programme at Lingadahalli village in Devadurga taluk of Raichur district, Karnataka, on 27 August 2026. The project covers 199.13 square kilometres and marks the first entry of Singareni Collieries Company Limited into critical and strategic mineral exploration. An exploration agreement for the Devadurga block was signed in Bengaluru on 6 August 2026 between Karnataka Mines and Geology Department Director Rangappa and SCCL Director K. Venkateshwarlu. On 15 August 2026, SCCL Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Buddha Prakash Jyoti announced the exploration licence during Independence Day celebrations.
2. Important Semiconductor and Chip Design Terms: Semiconductors are the foundation of modern electronics, from microchips and memory to power systems and advanced communication hardware. Their materials, fabrication methods, chip designs, and packaging techniques determine performance, efficiency, and manufacturing scale. The interface between software and hardware defining the basic operations, registers, and data types a chip can process. Common architectures include x86, ARM, and RISC-V. Software used to model, simulate, lay out, and verify the electrical performance of complex microchip designs. Transistors act as electrical switches within microchips. Their architecture has evolved to reduce leakage currents as physical features shrink.
BANKING AND FINANCE
1. NABARD and NaBFID Sign Pact for Rural Infrastructure: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Mumbai on 26 August 2026. The agreement covers infrastructure projects with rural linkages, Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects, and agricultural value chains. NABARD was established in 1982 under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Act, 1981. It is the apex development financial institution for agriculture and rural development in India. NaBFID was established in 2021 under the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development Act, 2021, as a development financial institution for infrastructure financing.
AWARDS AND HONOURS
1. PM Modi Conferred With Uzbekistan’s Highest Honour For Foreign Leaders: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on 30 August conferred with Uzbekistan’s highest honour for foreign leaders, the ‘Oliy Darajali Do’stlik’ Order, which he dedicated to the “enduring” bond between New Delhi and Tashkent. The prime minister was conferred with the honour by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The Uzbek honour adds to a list of top state and civilian awards conferred on PM Modi by close to three dozen countries in recognition of his leadership and contribution to bilateral ties. PM Modi is in Uzbekistan on a two-day visit to bolster ties in a range of areas including trade, clean energy and connectivity.
