NATIONAL UPDATES:
1. Tamil Nadu government notifies three elephant corridors in Hosur forest division covering 10,300 hectares: The Tamil Nadu government has notified three elephant corridors in the Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary in Hosur forest division, which will strengthen habitat connectivity and ensure the safe movement of elephants between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The three corridors collectively cover more than 10,300 hectares of reserve forest and wildlife sanctuary land. Jawalagiri–Panai–Anchetty is the largest corridor, covering 6,881.47 hectares across 20.90 km.
2. Ladakh To Get J&K High Court Bench After President Murmu’s Approval: President Droupadi Murmu has issued a regulation that establishes a bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in the Union Territory of Ladakh, paving the way for bringing higher judicial services closer to the people of the region. The regulation, titled ‘The Union Territory of Ladakh (Sitting of the Bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Ladakh) Regulation, 2026,’ was promulgated by President Murmu on August 27 and published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary on the same day.
3. National Small Industry Day 2026 – August 30: National Small Industry Day 2026 was observed across India on August 30, 2026, to celebrate small businesses and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The observance traces its formal recognition to August 30, 2000, following the launch of a comprehensive policy package for small scale industries. The day also draws attention to the challenges and opportunities affecting small enterprises.
4. Bihar and Jharkhand Sign Sone River Water Pact: Bihar and Jharkhand are scheduled to sign a water-sharing agreement for the Sone river on 31 August 2026. The pact ends a 25-year dispute that began after Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in November 2000. The final formula allocates 5.75 million acre-feet (MAF) of water to Bihar and 2.0 MAF to Jharkhand. The total allocation of 7.75 MAF corresponds to the share originally assigned to undivided Bihar under the 1973 Bansagar Agreement. The Bansagar Agreement was signed in 1973 by Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and undivided Bihar. The Sone river is a major tributary of the Ganga and supports irrigation in the eastern plains of India.
5. Government Releases National Accounts Statistics 2026: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the National Accounts Statistics 2026 on 31 August 2026. The publication contains 60 statements based on updated Final Estimates for FY 2022–23 and FY 2023–24, First Revised Estimates for FY 2024–25, and revised macroeconomic indicators for FY 2025–26. National Accounts Statistics is an official statistical publication of India that compiles macroeconomic aggregates such as Gross Domestic Product, Gross Value Added, and sector-wise estimates. The series is used for national income accounting and for presenting annual and quarterly estimates of the Indian economy. The revised estimates in the 2026 publication changed several growth figures. India’s real GDP growth rate for FY 2023–24 was revised from 7.2% to 7.3%, and nominal GDP growth was revised from 11.0% to 11.1%.
6. 4th Tri-Services Future Warfare Course Concludes in New Delhi: The fourth edition of the Tri-Services Future Warfare Course concluded in New Delhi on 30 August 2026 after a four-week programme that began on 3 August 2026 at the Manekshaw Centre. The course was conducted under the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff and coordinated by the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies. Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani interacted with the participants during the concluding session in New Delhi. Air Marshal Tejinder Singh, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee, presented completion certificates to the attendees. 7. Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031 Plan for Ornamental Fisheries: Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031 is a Strategic Action Plan for Ornamental Fisheries Development in India. The plan was released in Agatti, Lakshadweep, on 31 August 2026 by Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan. The initiative covers scientific management, biosecurity, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance for ornamental fisheries. Ornamental fisheries refer to the breeding, rearing, and trade of fish kept for aquariums and decorative purposes. The mission sets uniform standards for broodstock management, breeding, hatchery operations, quarantine, traceability, and international trade. The action plan is linked to the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:
1. China and Bangladesh Begin 2+2 Dialogue Preparations: Bangladesh and China have started preparations for their first “2+2” diplomacy and defence dialogue, which combines foreign affairs and defence-level talks. The proposed mechanism includes a State Minister-level Diplomacy and Defence Dialogue and an early Foreign Minister-level Strategic Dialogue. A 2+2 dialogue is a bilateral diplomatic format in which two ministers from each country meet together. In foreign policy practice, the format usually involves the foreign minister and defence minister, or equivalent office-holders, from both sides. India uses a similar 2+2 ministerial dialogue format with several partner countries, including the United States, Japan, Australia and Russia. The format is used for discussions on strategic, security and defence cooperation.
2. Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario as Lake America: Apple Maps changed the label of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for users in the United States on 1 September 2026. The update followed a federal name change in the United States Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), while users in Canada continued to see “Lake Ontario”. The Geographic Names Information System is the federal database of geographic names maintained by the United States Geological Survey. It standardises place names used in official U.S. maps, databases, and federal records. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America and the easternmost of the group. It lies between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York, and it drains into the Saint Lawrence River.
3. BHASHINI Shilpi Session Held in Kathmandu: The Digital India BHASHINI Division organised the BHASHINI Shilpi developer session at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, Nepal, on 31 August 2026. The session was held under the Digital India Corporation and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, and focused on Language AI and multilingual digital services. BHASHINI is India’s national language technology platform for speech and text-based digital services. The platform works through application programming interfaces, or APIs, that support translation, speech recognition, speech synthesis, and other language-processing functions. The Kathmandu session brought together local developers, technology practitioners, students, and innovators from Nepal. Participants were introduced to BHASHINI APIs and developer resources through the framework of “Develop with BHASHINI”, “Solve with BHASHINI”, “Scale with BHASHINI”, and “Innovate with BHASHINI”.
4. India and Denmark Hold MSME, Innovation Talks in Copenhagen: The 4th Meeting of the India–Denmark Joint Working Group on MSME development, innovation and intellectual property was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 24 to 28 August 2026. The talks involved the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of India and the Danish Patent and Trademark Office, with discussions on technology adoption, technology commercialisation and IP-led growth. The Indian delegation was led by Dr Rajneesh, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner in the Ministry of MSME. The Danish delegation was headed by Maria Skou, Deputy Director General and Chief Operating Officer of the Danish Patent and Trademark Office. India’s Ambassador to Denmark, Manish Prabhat, and Counsellor Ashish Arya also took part in the bilateral sessions.
5. Turkey Joins Artemis Accords as 71st Member: The Republic of Türkiye became the 71st country to sign the Artemis Accords on 31 August 2026. The signing took place at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and placed Türkiye in a U.S.-led framework for peaceful and cooperative space exploration. The Artemis Accords were launched in 2020 as a set of non-binding principles for civil space activities. The framework covers transparency, interoperability, emergency assistance to astronauts, registration of space objects, and the protection of historic sites in outer space, including lunar heritage locations. Türkiye signed the accords through Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır. Turkish Space Agency President Yusuf Kıraç and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Connor Tomlinson were present at the ceremony, which was hosted by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.
6. 26th SCO Summit Held in Bishkek: The 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit was held at the Yrys Ordo Congress Hall in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on August 31 and September 1, 2026. The summit marked the 25th anniversary of the SCO, which was founded in 2001, and it brought together leaders of the 10 member states, observer representatives, and dialogue partner representatives. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a Eurasian intergovernmental grouping that began in 2001 as the Shanghai Five process. Its current members are India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus. Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov chaired the Council of Heads of State meeting and handed over the rotating chairmanship to Pakistan. The member states signed the Bishkek Declaration and adopted more than 20 strategic decisions and statements during the summit.
7. Indian Railways Approves ₹170 Crore for Kavach 4.0: Indian Railways approved ₹170 crore for the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 across the remaining 712 route kilometres of Northern Railway’s Moradabad Division. Kavach is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system used on Indian Railways for train safety functions such as automatic braking and speed regulation. Kavach is an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system developed for Indian Railways to reduce the risk of Signal Passing at Danger, commonly called SPAD. The system can apply brakes automatically when a train approaches a danger signal or exceeds permitted speed limits. Kavach Version 4.0 includes direct interface with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems, station-to-station communication through optical fibre cable, and improved location accuracy. Electronic Interlocking is a railway signalling system that controls points and signals through computer-based logic.

1. Rajnath Singh lays foundation for Rs 472-crore facility to overhaul T-72, T-90 tanks in Jabalpur: Defence minister Rajnath Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, performed the Bhoomi Pujan for T-Series Tanks Overhaul Project at Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur — a unit of Mini Ratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL). The project involves the creation of overhauling facilities for T-72 and T-90 Tanks with an estimated cost of Rs 472 crore, another milestone in the nation’s journey towards self-reliance.
The facilities at Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur have been envisaged to overhaul 80 tanks annually to ensure timely availability of overhauled tanks to the Indian Army, further boosting its operational readiness.
2. Trump Nominates Hung Cao as US Navy Secretary: Hung Cao was nominated by President Donald Trump on 1 September 2026 to serve as the permanent United States Secretary of the Navy. He had been serving as Acting Secretary of the Navy since 22 April 2026 and was earlier confirmed by the United States Senate as the 35th Under Secretary of the Navy on 3 October 2025. The Secretary of the Navy is the civilian head of the Department of the Navy in the United States. The office oversees both the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps, which function under the Department of Defense. Hung Cao retired from active duty in October 2021 as a United States Navy Captain after a 25-year career. His service included special operations, diving, and explosive ordnance disposal duties, with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia.

Kissht Launches ‘Loans Without Any Hiccups’ Campaign with Sachin Tendulkar as Brand Ambassador: Kissht has announced the launch of its brand campaign featuring cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who has signed on as brand ambassador for a three-year period. The campaign of Kissht, one of India’s leading RBI-registered NBFCs, is titled “Loans Without Any Hiccups“, and brings the partnership to life through a series of films rolling out across digital platforms. 2. Lionel Messi Retires from International Football: Lionel Messi, the Argentina captain and one of football’s most capped players, announced his retirement from international football on 31 August 2026. He ended his senior international career with 125 goals in 207 appearances for Argentina. Lionel Messi made his senior international debut for Argentina in August 2005. He played his final international match on 19 July 2026 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time. Messi said that he had drafted his farewell statement on 21 July 2026, two days after the World Cup final. He also referred to the death of his father and agent, Jorge Messi, on 8 August 2026 in Rosario.
3. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Becomes Youngest Duleep Trophy Half-Century Maker: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old batter from East Zone, became the youngest player to score a half-century in Duleep Trophy history on 31 August 2026. He reached the milestone in the semi-final against Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The Duleep Trophy is an ഇന്ത്യന് domestic first-class cricket tournament organised under the Board of Control for Cricket in India. It has traditionally featured zonal teams such as East Zone, Central Zone, North Zone, South Zone, West Zone and North East Zone. With this innings, he broke a 57-year-old tournament record set in January 1969 by Laxman Singh, who had scored a Duleep Trophy fifty at the age of 16 years and 23 days. Sooryavanshi was 15 years and 157 days old when he reached the landmark.

1. Bihar Launches ‘Bihar Vidya Saathi’ for 24-Hour Online Learning Support: The Bihar Government has launched ‘Bihar Vidya Saathi’, a 24-hour one-on-one interactive learning platform for students of Classes 9 to 12, providing access to teachers, digital study materials and AI-powered learning tools. The platform was launched by Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary through video conferencing for 700 Saraswati Vidya Niketan Model Schools across the state. Around 75,000 teachers will provide one-on-one academic support to students round the clock. Students can choose teachers according to their learning requirements. Objective: To promote quality education, proper guidance and stronger learning outcomes through digital technology.
2. NASA Launches Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to Explore universe’s biggest mysteries: NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has been launched from Florida, embarking on a mission to explore some of the universe’s biggest mysteries. With a 2.4-metre-wide primary mirror, Roman can capture an area of sky more than 100 times larger than Hubble, allowing astronomers to survey the cosmos on an unprecedented scale. The 4.3 billion dollar observatory is designed to revolutionise infrared astronomy. It carries a specialised instrument called a coronagraph, which can block the intense glare of stars, making it easier to observe faint objects such as exoplanets and planet-forming disks. Over the next five years, Roman could help scientists discover previously unseen galaxies and exoplanets while providing new insights into the nature of dark energy and the evolution of the universe. Named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer and widely regarded as the “mother of the Hubble Space Telescope.”
3. Vice President Launches Gnani Artha Sovereign AI Stack: Vice President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan launched Gnani Artha, an indigenous sovereign Artificial Intelligence stack, at the Uprashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on 28 August 2026. The stack was developed by Bengaluru-based voice and conversational AI startup GNANI AI and is designed for data residency and sovereignty for Indian public institutions and enterprises. Gnani Artha combines two core components, namely Evon v3.3 and Plexus. Evon v3.3 is a foundational language model, while Plexus is an enterprise-grade agentic AI orchestration platform. Evon v3.3 is an open-weights model with 30 billion parameters. It uses a Mixture-of-Experts architecture and activates about 3.5 billion parameters per token. The model tokenizer for Indian scripts uses about 20% fewer tokens per Indian-language word than the GPT-5 family. It also uses less than half the tokens required by models such as DeepSeek, Llama, and Qwen.
BANKING AND FINANCE
1. NIPL, Uzbekistan’s NIPC Partner to Enable UPI Payments Across Uzbekistan: NPCI International Payments Ltd. (NIPL) has entered into a commercial agreement with Uzbekistan’s National Interbank Processing Centre JSC (NIPC) to enable Indian travellers to make merchant payments across Uzbekistan using UPI-enabled applications. The agreement, signed on August 30, 2026, integrates UPI with Uzbekistan’s national interoperable QR system, UZQR, allowing Indian tourists, business travellers and students to scan UZQR codes and make direct payments from their Indian bank accounts. The integration is expected to enable broad UPI acceptance across retail, hospitality and service merchants in Uzbekistan, reducing reliance on cash and international cards.
2. National Biodiversity Authority Disburses ₹5.68 Crore in ABS Funds: The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) disbursed ₹5.68 crore, or ₹5,68,18,277, under the Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) mechanism on 30 August 2026. The funds were transferred to State Biodiversity Boards, Union Territory Biodiversity Councils, and a national research institution from the commercial use of agricultural biological resources. Access and Benefit-Sharing is a mechanism linked to the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and the Biological Diversity Rules, 2004. It provides for sharing monetary and non-monetary benefits arising from the use of biological resources and associated traditional knowledge. The NBA is a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. It functions at the national level, while State Biodiversity Boards and Biodiversity Management Committees operate at the state and local levels.

1. Mizo footballer Lallianzuala Chhangte named Indian Footballer of the Year 2026: India midfielder and Mohun Bagan player Lallianzuala Chhangte was named Indian Player of the Year at the Football Players’ Association of India’s Indian Football Awards 2026, while Manisha Kalyan took home the Indian Women’s Player of the Year honour. The awards celebrated standout performers across the men’s and women’s game, with East Bengal also earning recognition for a successful 2025-26 campaign.
2. Airbus Awards Mahindra Contract for A320neo Fuselage Skins: Airbus awarded Mahindra Aerostructures Pvt. Ltd. (MASPL), a Mahindra Group company, a multi-year contract to manufacture and supply fuselage skins for the A320neo and A321XLR passenger aircraft. The work will be carried out at Mahindra’s Bengaluru facility, and the finished components will be shipped to Airbus Aerostructures’ assembly plant in Augsburg, Germany. Fuselage skins are the outer structural panels that form the body of an aircraft. In commercial aircraft, these panels are produced with high dimensional accuracy and are fitted to fuselage sections that include the rear fuselage and tail section. The agreement covers 11 fuselage skins in total. It includes eight skins for Section 18, which is the rear fuselage, and three skins for Section 19, which is the tail section. The first deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028.
