NATIONAL UPDATES:
1. India Rejects Hague Court’s Indus Waters Treaty Ruling: India rejected the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) ruling concerning the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. The Court of Arbitration, the world’s oldest permanent forum for international dispute, further said that India had no justification for ending or suspending the agreement and that the treaty between the two subcontinent arch-rivals remained fully in force.
2. Bihar, Jharkhand sign MoU for sharing of Sone river water: Bihar and Jharkhand signed a Memorandum of Understanding for sharing of Sone river water. The agreement was signed by Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and his Jharkhand counterpart Hemant Soren in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil. This agreement will provide irrigation water to lakhs of farmers in large rural areas of Bihar and Jharkhand, along with drinking water for the people.
3. Government Releases National Accounts Statistics 2026: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the National Accounts Statistics 2026 on 31 August 2026. The publication contains 60 statements based on updated Final Estimates for FY 2022–23 and FY 2023–24, First Revised Estimates for FY 2024–25, and revised macroeconomic indicators for FY 2025–26. National Accounts Statistics is an official statistical publication of India that compiles macroeconomic aggregates such as Gross Domestic Product, Gross Value Added, and sector-wise estimates. The series is used for national income accounting and for presenting annual and quarterly estimates of the Indian economy.
4. Vice President Launches Gnani Artha Sovereign AI Stack: Vice President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan launched Gnani Artha, an indigenous sovereign Artificial Intelligence stack, at the Uprashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on 28 August 2026. The stack was developed by Bengaluru-based voice and conversational AI startup GNANI AI and is designed for data residency and sovereignty for Indian public institutions and enterprises. Gnani Artha combines two core components, namely Evon v3.3 and Plexus. Evon v3.3 is a foundational language model, while Plexus is an enterprise-grade agentic AI orchestration platform. Evon v3.3 is an open-weights model with 30 billion parameters. It uses a Mixture-of-Experts architecture and activates about 3.5 billion parameters per token.
5. Delhi Approves Free Rooftop Solar for 400-Unit Households: Delhi Cabinet approved the second amendment to the Delhi Solar Energy Policy, 2023, on 1 September 2026 to expand rooftop solar installation for domestic consumers. Households with an average monthly electricity consumption of up to 400 units in 2025-26 are eligible for a 3 kW solar system at zero upfront cost. The Delhi Solar Energy Policy, 2023, is the policy framework for solar power deployment in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The second amendment permits free rooftop solar systems for eligible domestic consumers and links the scheme with household electricity consumption data. The funding model combines the Central Government’s ₹78,000 PM Surya Ghar subsidy with an equal ₹78,000 state subsidy.
6. DGFT Automates Free Sale and Commerce Certificates: The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has introduced automated issuance of Free Sale and Commerce Certificates (FSC) through Trade Notice No. 24/2026-2027. The system applies to exporters seeking certificates under Paragraph 2.34 of the Handbook of Procedures for products that do not fall under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940. Free Sale and Commerce Certificates are trade documents issued for products that are freely sold in the domestic market and are often required for export clearance in foreign markets. In India, the DGFT functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and issues trade-related authorisations through its regional offices. The new workflow replaces routine manual examination, verification, and approval by Regional Authorities with a phased electronic process. Eligible online applications that satisfy all prescribed system parameters now receive automatic certificate generation without manual intervention.
7. MoSPI Signs MoU with Thapar Institute for Statistical Cooperation: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology in Patiala, Punjab, on 31 August 2026. The agreement covers a joint research study on a Predictive and Analytical Framework for Monthly Consumption Expenditures in India. The collaboration uses Household Consumption Expenditure Survey data to estimate Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure at the national and state levels. MPCE is a standard statistical measure used in household consumption analysis and poverty-related studies in India. MoSPI is the nodal ministry for official statistics and programme implementation in India. It works with national statistical systems that cover surveys, price data, national accounts, and socio-economic indicators.
INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:
1. 4th Indo-German Environmental Forum to be held in New Delhi: The 4th Indo-German Environmental Forum will be held in New Delhi to strengthen bilateral cooperation and facilitate multi-stakeholder exchange on environment and climate change. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, along with German Minister for Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Carsten Schneider, will co-chair the forum. Both sides will discuss key issues relating to environmental protection and climate policy to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, exchange experiences and advance practical collaboration.
2. SCO Summit 2026: Highlights: The 26th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) was held from August 31 to September 1, 2026, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov hosted the summit, marking the end of Kyrgyzstan’s 2025–2026 rotating chairmanship. “25 Years of the SCO: Together for Sustainable Peace, Development and Prosperity”. Kyrgyzstan handed over the rotating chairmanship to Pakistan at the conclusion of the summit. PM Modi strongly urged member states to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism and stated there is “no place for double standards on terrorism”.
3. John Ternus succeeds Tim Cook as Apple CEO after 15 years: John Ternus has officially taken over as the chief executive officer of Apple, succeeding Tim Cook, who ended a 15-year tenure leading the tech giant. Ternus, who took the helm on 1st September, had been serving as the senior vice president for hardware engineering at the Cupertino, California-based company since 2021.
4. World Coconut Day: 2 September 2026: World Coconut Day is observed annually on 2 September. The day commemorates the establishment of the organisation that is called the International Coconut Community (ICC) and seeks to increase awareness about the contribution of coconut cultivation and coconut-based industries to livelihoods and sustainable development. The Asian Coconut Community (ACC) was established on 2 September 1969 under the aegis of UN-ESCAP. In 1975, it became known as the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC). 5. Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario as Lake America: Apple Maps changed the label of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for users in the United States on 1 September 2026. The update followed a federal name change in the United States Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), while users in Canada continued to see “Lake Ontario”. The Geographic Names Information System is the federal database of geographic names maintained by the United States Geological Survey. It standardises place names used in official U.S. maps, databases, and federal records. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America and the easternmost of the group. It lies between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York, and it drains into the Saint Lawrence River.
6. Turkey Joins Artemis Accords as 71st Member: The Republic of Türkiye became the 71st country to sign the Artemis Accords on 31 August 2026. The signing took place at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and placed Türkiye in a U.S.-led framework for peaceful and cooperative space exploration. The Artemis Accords were launched in 2020 as a set of non-binding principles for civil space activities. The framework covers transparency, interoperability, emergency assistance to astronauts, registration of space objects, and the protection of historic sites in outer space, including lunar heritage locations. Türkiye signed the accords through Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır. Turkish Space Agency President Yusuf Kıraç and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Connor Tomlinson were present at the ceremony, which was hosted by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.
7. SCO Names Lahore Tourism and Cultural Capital: Lahore in Pakistan was designated as the Tourism and Cultural Capital for the 2026–27 term by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The decision was finalised at the 26th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and the chairmanship of the SCO was transferred to Pakistan for the 2026–2027 period. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a Eurasian intergovernmental grouping founded in 2001. Its members include China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Iran, while Belarus joined as a member in 2024. Lahore is the capital of Punjab province in Pakistan and is known for Mughal-era monuments, Sufi shrines, and colonial architecture. The city includes the Lahore Fort, Shalimar Gardens, Badshahi Mosque, and the Walled City, which are major heritage sites in South Asia.
8. First Export Ship Departs from Vizhinjam for Spain: The 366-metre container vessel MSC Beryl departed from Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala on 1 September 2026 for Valencia, Spain. The vessel carried Vizhinjam’s first export consignment of eight containers, including packaged food products from Thiruvananthapuram and seafood from Kochi. EXIM stands for export-import operations, which cover the movement of goods into and out of a port. On 20 August 2026, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan flagged off EXIM operations at Vizhinjam Port. On 19 August 2026, Ashwani Gupta announced an additional investment of ₹160 billion for expansion of the port’s capacity from 1.6 million TEUs to 5.7 million TEUs. Vizhinjam International Seaport is a deep-water transhipment port near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The port is developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. and is designed to handle large container vessels on the Arabian Sea coast.

1. Trump Nominates Hung Cao as US Navy Secretary: Hung Cao was nominated by President Donald Trump on 1 September 2026 to serve as the permanent United States Secretary of the Navy. He had been serving as Acting Secretary of the Navy since 22 April 2026 and was earlier confirmed by the United States Senate as the 35th Under Secretary of the Navy on 3 October 2025. The Secretary of the Navy is the civilian head of the Department of the Navy in the United States. The office oversees both the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps, which function under the Department of Defense. Hung Cao retired from active duty in October 2021 as a United States Navy Captain after a 25-year career. His service included special operations, diving, and explosive ordnance disposal duties, with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia.
2. Shakti Sharma Becomes First Woman Non-Medical Air Vice Marshal: Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma assumed charge as the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on 1 September 2026. She became the first non-medical woman officer in the history of the Indian Armed Forces to attain the two-star rank of Air Vice Marshal or its equivalent. The Education Branch of the Indian Air Force deals with training, academic administration, and professional education within the service. Officers in this branch are posted to institutions and headquarters appointments connected with instruction, curriculum support, and personnel development.

Argentina legend Lionel Messi retires from international football: Lionel Messi, who captained Argentina to World Cup victory in 2022 and the final in 2026, is retiring from international football. The record eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is his country’s record appearance maker and scorer, with 125 goals in 207 games, having transformed a complicated relationship with the national team into a story of redemption and triumph. Messi, who will continue to play at club level with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, Messi’s contract with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami runs until the end of the 2028 season.

1. IIT Madras, UNESCO MGIEP Partner on AI Learning Tools: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) in Chennai and the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (UNESCO MGIEP) signed a cooperation agreement on 1 September 2026 to develop next-generation AI and immersive learning technologies. The partnership combines UNESCO MGIEP’s work in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) with IIT Madras expertise in artificial intelligence, Extended Reality (XR), and game design. UNESCO MGIEP is a UNESCO Category 1 institute based in India and works on education for peace and sustainable development. Tata Elxsi, Sarla Aviation Sign MoU for Shunya eVTOL: Tata Elxsi and Sarla Aviation signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Bengaluru on 1 September 2026 to develop Shunya, an indigenous electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. Shunya is planned as a seven-seater eVTOL with six passengers and one pilot, and it is designed for runway-independent operations. An electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, or eVTOL, is an aircraft that uses electric propulsion for vertical lift and landing. eVTOL aircraft are associated with advanced air mobility, a sector that includes short-range urban and regional air transport systems. Shunya has been described as an aircraft with an operational range exceeding 300 kilometres. Its design combines vertical take-off capability with fixed-wing cruise efficiency, which is a configuration used in several hybrid air mobility concepts.
BANKING AND FINANCE
1. India’s GDP grows better than expected at 7.8% in April-June: India’s gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 7.8% in the first quarter of the current financial year, driven by robust expansion in services and manufacturing sector, despite disruptions caused in the global economy due to the West Asia conflict. Powered by strong manufacturing and services sector growth, India remained one of the fastest growing major economies, with China expanding 4.3 per cent and Indonesia growing 5.3 per cent in the June quarter. India’s economy had grown 6.9 per cent in the June quarter of last financial year. The gross value added (GVA) growth print at 8.2 per cent for Q1 was higher than real gross domestic product (GDP) growth, signalling subsidies outstripped indirect taxes during the quarter. Nominal GDP grew at 10.3 per cent in the June quarter against 9.1 per cent in the preceding March quarter of FY26, indicating towards built up in inflationary pressure.
2. GST collections jump 14.8% to Rs 1.99 lakh crore in August 2026: India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections witnessed a significant rise to ₹1,99,853 crore, registering a 8% year-on-year increase compared with ₹1,74,116 crore collected in August 2025. GST revenue from domestic transactions rose 9.3% to ₹1.37 lakh crore, while revenue from imports jumped 29% to ₹62,604 crore during the month. The Central GST (CGST) collection stood at ₹38,413 crore, while State GST (SGST) collections were ₹46,316 crore. Integrated GST (IGST) collections stood at over ₹1.15 lakh crore.
