2. Burrowing Vertebrates and Fossorial Adaptations: Fossorial vertebrates are animals adapted for life below the ground. Their body plan, senses and movement are modified to help them tunnel through soil, avoid predators and exploit underground food resources. Among amphibians, caecilians are the clearest example of a truly burrowing lifestyle, and Indian species of the genus Gegeneophis are important for understanding this hidden diversity in the Western Ghats. Many fossorial vertebrates have reduced limbs or no limbs at all. A long, cylindrical body helps lower resistance while moving through compact soil. Burrowing forms often have a compact, heavily ossified skull that can push through soil and withstand pressure while tunnelling. Vision is often reduced because underground habitats have little light. In compensation, smell, touch and chemical sensing become more important.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
1. Major Earth Observation Technologies: Earth observation technologies collect data on the physical, chemical and biological features of the planet. Using satellites, aircraft and drones, they help track agriculture, disasters, climate trends, land use and security-related changes with precision and repeatability. captures data across hundreds of narrow, contiguous spectral bands.
The bands are typically around 10 to 20 nanometers wide and cover visible, near-infrared and shortwave infrared regions. This creates a continuous spectral signature that helps identify materials more precisely than multispectral data. goes further by using thousands of extremely narrow bands, though it requires heavier computation because of the data volume. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) uses the movement of the radar antenna over a target area to simulate a much larger antenna. This produces high-resolution two-dimensional or three-dimensional images. SAR works in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
2. Types of Satellite Imaging Systems: Satellite imaging systems are the backbone of modern Earth observation. By capturing reflected or emitted electromagnetic radiation, they generate usable data for agriculture, climate studies, resource mapping, disaster response, governance, and strategic surveillance. Optical remote sensing works mainly in the visible, near-infrared (NIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, broadly covering 0.4 to 2.5 micrometers. collect reflected light in a single broad band across the visible spectrum and produce high-spatial-resolution grayscale images. combines high-resolution panchromatic data with lower-resolution multispectral data to create sharper colour imagery. Passive sensing is the main feature of optical systems: they depend on sunlight, so imaging is limited to daytime and cloud-free conditions.
3. Sovereign AI Fund: A Sovereign AI Fund is a state-backed financing tool used to build domestic artificial intelligence capacity, reduce dependence on foreign technology providers and support strategic computing infrastructure. Such funds typically combine public capital with access to compute, datasets and research support to strengthen national digital autonomy. Sovereign AI frameworks are designed to develop national foundational models, local datasets and independent access to advanced semiconductor and compute resources. They help bridge the computational shortage faced by domestic research institutions, universities and early-stage AI enterprises. These initiatives are also used to reduce dependence on foreign technology monopolies and create resilient indigenous digital ecosystems. Governments view sovereign AI as a way to manage national security risks and protect sensitive data infrastructure.
