Daily GK Update- 18th July, 2022

 

NATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. CM introduces e-FIR service and a police app for Uttarakhand: The e-FIR service and the Uttarakhand police app were introduced by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The State police’s five online services are all integrated into the police app. Dhami, who spoke at the event, asserted that the app will provide better services to the public. On behalf of the government’s policy of simplification, solution, and resolution, he noted that this is a commendable endeavour. This is a commendable effort to put Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concept of smart policing into practise. Key Points:

a)      The head of the police department The Uttarakhand police app now includes all of the online services that the State police offers to the general public, according to Ashok Kumar.

b)      These are Lakshya Nasha Mukt Uttarakhand, Meri Yatra, Gaura Shakti, traffic eye, and public eye.

c)       Additionally linked to this app are the cyber hotline number 1930 and the emergency number 112.

d)      He added that with this software, residents will be able to report vehicle theft or lost documents online while at home using the citizens web portal or their mobile phone.

e)      The report must be filled out according to the description given, and the cyber police station will receive the public’s information for registration as an e-FIR.

2. Vedanta collaborates with company started from IIT Madras: In order to implement safety incident detection, metal and oil and Gas Company Vedanta has partnered with Detect Technologies, a startup established at IIT Madras, and deployed T-Pulse HSSE Monitoring System across all of its business units. The partnership is consistent with the Vedanta Group’s objective to achieving zero harm through the implementation of AI-enabled safety monitoring of workplaces, which is a key priority in its roadmap for digital transformation.

Key Points:

a)      The solution will make use of and recognise Vedanta’s infrastructure for relaying, analysing, and reporting feeds. The module will be used to spot harmful behaviours and environments.

b)      The technological stack offered by T-Pulse is centralised, scalable, and intended for plug-and-play implementation.

c)       T-Pulse has seen widespread implementation across key caution-intensive workplaces such as construction, petrochemicals, logistics, power, metals, mining, pharmaceuticals, and fabrication yard.

d)      It was designed for risk minimization and mitigation through actionable insights. By providing quick reactions in settings ranging from onshore drilling to zinc manufacture, it has been used extensively throughout Vedanta sites to improve compliance.

3. India’s first Monkeypox case reported in Kerala: The first case of monkeypox was confirmed in India after a person who had returned to Kerala from UAE developed symptoms of the disease. His samples were sent to National Virology Institute in Pune which confirmed the disease. It was first found in monkeys in 1958. About Monkeypox:

a)      Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease with symptoms similar to smallpox, although with less clinical severity. The virus is transmitted through close contact with another infected person or animal and spreads from lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding.

b)      The symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle ache and backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, and rashes that can look like pimples or blisters on the face, inside the mouth and other parts of the body.

c)       As infection turns acute, red lesions will appear on the body and the itching-like chicken pox is triggered. The incubation period ranges from five to 21 days.

 

4. West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar is NDA’s vice-presidential pick: The BJP has announced West Bengal Governor, Jagdeep Dhankhar as the NDA’s vice-presidential candidate, with party chief J P Nadda lauding him as a “Kisan Putra (farmer’s son)” who had established himself as “a people’s governor”. With the NDA having a clear majority in the electoral college comprising MPs of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar is expected to win the August 6 election to vice-president. He will succeed M Venkaiah Naidu, whose term ends on August 10.

Dhankhar entered public life after getting elected as the Member of Parliament from Jhunjhunu in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections. He also served as a Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in 1990. In 1993, he was elected to the Rajasthan Assembly from the Kishangarh constituency in Ajmer district.

 

5. VK Singh appointed as Director (Technical) of REC Limited: V.K. Singh has taken charge as Director (Technical) of REC Limited. Before this elevation, Singh was Executive Director in REC holding a portfolio of key business areas including Private Sector Project Management, Entity Appraisal and Procurement and is also a Director on the Board of REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited.

REC Limited: REC Limited, formerly Rural Electrification Corporation Limited, is a public Infrastructure Finance Company in India’s power sector. The company is a Public Sector Undertaking and finances and promotes power projects across India.

 

6. New television series called “Swaraj” being promoted by Anurag Thakur: Anurag Thakur, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, debuted the trailer for the new television series Swaraj: Bharat Ke Swatantrata Sangram Ki Samagra Gatha in New Delhi. Doordarshan will begin airing this series on August 14th, 2022. The contribution of the liberation warriors and unsung heroes of the freedom movement will be highlighted in the 75-episode drama. The All India Radio will also air this programme. The serial logo was unveiled by Mr. Thakur at New Delhi’s Akashwani Bhawan. The upcoming television series Swaraj: Bharat Ke Swatantrata Sangram Ki Samagra Gatha, the debut of the promo is an illustration of the Swaraj that was envisioned during the battle for independence.

 

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:

 

1. Varanasi named 1st cultural and tourism capital of SCO: The holy city of Varanasi showcasing India’s culture and traditions over the ages will be declared the first “Cultural and Tourism Capital” of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. Varanasi will become the “Cultural and Tourism Capital” of the SCO for 2022-23 under a new rotating initiative by the eight-member organisation to promote people-to-people contacts and tourism among the member states. Under this initiative:

a)      Each year a city of the cultural heritage of a member country that will take over the rotating Presidency of the organisation will get the title to highlight its prominence.

b)      The organisation’s new initiatives ahead of this year’s Heads of the State summit of the SCO scheduled to be held at Samarkand in Uzbekistan on September 15-16 this year.

c)       The new initiative will come into force after the Samarkand summit following which India will take over the Presidency and host the next Heads of the State summit.

About the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation: The Beijing-headquartered Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is an eight-member economic and security alliance comprising China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan.

 

2. Nelson Mandela International Day: 18th July: Every year on July 18 the world marks Nelson Mandela International Day. The day is a remembrance of the first democratically elected President of South Africa and his long years of struggle for justice against apartheid. As a human rights lawyer, a political prisoner, a global mediator, and the first democratically elected leader of a free South Africa, he had dedicated his life to serving humanity.

The theme for Nelson Mandela International Day 2022 is “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”, according to the United Nations. The theme finds significance given the geopolitical landscape in eastern Europe as well as sporadic conflicts in the Horn of Africa, followed by the crisis in Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and various other parts of the world, as the UN chief notes.

Nelson Mandela Day History: The day came about in November 2009, after the UN General Assembly recognised the former contributions of Mandela to peace and the fight for freedom. The UNGA adopted the resolution outlining the values and dedication to the service of humanity in conflict resolution, race relations, promotion, protection of human rights, fight against poverty, and more. It is celebrated on the birthday of Mandela. Later in 2014, the UNGA introduced the Nelson Mandela Prize to honour the achievements of those who dedicated their lives to humanity.

1. IOA named 322-member Indian contingent for Commonwealth Games: Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has announced a 322-member Indian contingent including 215 athletes and 107 officials and support staff to represent the country at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The Games are scheduled to be held in British city from July 28 to August 8, 2022. Team India will compete in 15 sporting disciplines as well as four disciplines in the para-sports category. Rajesh Bhandari, vice president of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), is the Chef de Mission of the squad.

Some big names in the squad include Neeraj Chopra, who won the gold medal in Tokyo, PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medallist, Lovlina Borgohain, Mirabai Chanu, and Bajrang Punia. Defending CWG champions Vinesh Phogat, Manika Batra, and 2018 Asian Games gold medalists Hima Das, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, and Amit Panghal will also be taking part in the championship.

 

2. Indian GM Aravindh Chithambaram won tournament in Spain: Indian Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram has emerged winner in the 41st Villa De Benasque International Chess Open in Spain. Chithambaram’s coach R B Ramesh praised his ward for the title. He defeated Armenia’s Robert Hovhannisyan and compatriot Raunak Sadhwani on the basis of a tie-break score here. Sadhwani finished in third place behind the Armenian. Chithambaram is also a former national champion. The 17-year-old Sadhwani remained unbeaten through the 10 rounds, scoring six wins to go with four draws. An inferior tie-break score hurt his chances of claiming the top spot.

 

3. Singapore Open 2022: PV Sindhu wins first Super 500 title: PV Sindhu won the first Super 500 title of her career when she defeated reigning Asian champion Wang Zhi Yi of China 21-9, 11-21, 21-15 in the final of the Singapore Open. This is her first 500 or better since the world championship win in 2019. This is her first 500 or better final in 2022. This is an important marker for the world No 7 while the rankings are still frozen.

In men’s Single: Anthony Sinisuka Ginting won the men’s singles title at badminton’s Singapore Open 2022. Olympic bronze medallist Ginting from Indonesia beat unseeded Japanese player Naraoka Kodai in a closely fought final.

 

BANKING AND FINANCE

 

1. MoU signed between RBI and Bank Indonesia to further their shared cooperation: An agreement was reached between the Reserve Bank of India and Bank Indonesia to increase collaboration in payment systems, digital financial innovation, anti-money laundering, and countering the funding of terrorism (AML-CFT). On the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Bali, the two central banks agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further their mutual cooperation. Key Points:

a)      By signing this MoU, RBI and BI agreed to improve communication and collaboration in the field of central banking, including payment systems, technological advancements in payment services, and the regulatory and supervisory framework for AML-CFT.

b)      The MoU will be put into practise through policy discussion, technical collaboration, information sharing, and teamwork.

c)       In the presence of RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das and BI Governor Perry Warjiyo, it was signed by Deputy Governors of the RBI Michael Debabrata Patra and the BI Dody Budi Waluyo.

d)      The MoU will also serve as a solid foundation for fostering intercultural understanding, creating effective payment systems, and attaining cross-border payment connectivity, according to the RBI.

e)      According to the statement, such measures will be carried out through routine discussion of current financial and economic concerns and trends, technical collaboration through training and joint seminars, and cooperative work to investigate the creation of cross-border retail payment linkages.

BUSINESS AND ECONOMY

 

1. Center extends State and Central Tax and Levies Rebate Program: The government has approved the continuation of the Scheme for Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoSCTL) with the same rates as announced by the Ministry of Textiles for exports of apparel/garments and made-ups until March 31, 2024 in an effort to increase exports and create jobs in the textile industry. RoSCTL is a growth-oriented, forward-looking programme that has helped increase exports and jobs by establishing a stable and predictable policy environment.

The programme enhanced cost effectiveness and export competitiveness on the global market. Additionally, it has aided in the development of startups and entrepreneurs in the industry and encouraged a significant number of MSMEs to enter the garment export market. The RoSL (Rebate of State Levies) scheme was superseded by the new RoSCTL (Rebate of State and Central Taxes Levies) plan in March 2019 following the implementation of GST in 2017.

2. Google Parent Alphabet appoints Goldman Sachs Veteran, Marty Chavez to Board: Wall Street veteran Marty Chavez is joining the board of Google parent Alphabet Inc., adding significant finance muscle to the technology giant. His appointment marks the first change to the Alphabet board since 2020 when former Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt departed.

Chavez, a vice chairman and partner with Sixth Street Partners, has worked as an investor and software executive but is best known for his 20-year tenure at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Chavez, 58, originally joined Goldman Sachs in the J. Aron trading unit. He then held various other roles at the firm, including chief financial officer, chief information officer, and head of its trading division, the bank’s largest unit.

DEFENCE

 

1. Rajnath Singh launched Project 17A stealth frigate ‘Dunagiri’: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has launched the fourth P17A stealth frigate ‘Dunagiri’ into the Hooghly River in Kolkata. The Project 17A frigate is built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders Limited. The P-17A class is a follow-on of the P-17 Shivalik Class with improved stealth features & advanced weapons.

About the P17A Project:

a)      The first two ships of the P17A Project were launched in 2019 and 2020 at MDL and GRSE respectively. The third ship (Udaygiri) was launched at MDL on 17 May 22 earlier this year.

b)      Security challenges in the Indian Ocean region and Indo-Pacific are constantly increasing. In order to achieve the Prime Minister’s Vision of ‘SAGAR’, i.e., Security and Growth for All in the Region’ and to protect, preserve and promote India’s national maritime interests, the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and other organizations have to increase the infrastructure and assets so that the country stays ahead of the curve in dealing with these challenges.

 

OBITUARIES

 

1. Former Punjab Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon Passes Away: Former Punjab Speaker and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader, Nirmal Singh Kahlon has passed away at the age of 79. He was the Rural Development and Panchayat Minister from 1997 to 2002 and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2007 to 2012.

Career of Kahlon: Kahlon was elected MLA from Fatehgarh Churian in 1997 and 2007. Kahlon was the minister for rural development and panchayat in the Akali government from 1997 to 2002. He was also the Speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2007 to 2012. He lost the 2012 and 2017 Assembly elections to Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa of the Congress.
