4. Nalanda Temple Stampede Kills Nine Devotees in Bihar: At least nine people have lost their lives in a stampede at the Sheetla Mata Temple in Bihar’s Nalanda district on March 31, 2026. The incident occurred during routine Tuesday prayers, when a large number of devotees had gathered at the temple in Maghada village. Authorities fear that the death toll may rise further as rescue and identification efforts continue. The stampede broke out due to a sudden surge of devotees inside the temple परिसर. Initial reports confirmed eight deaths, all women, which later increased to nine. Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals. District officials stated that identification of victims is ongoing, while emergency teams were deployed immediately to manage the situation and assist the injured.

5. Amaravati Set To Be Andhra Pradesh Sole Capital: The Lok Sabha has passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, formally recognising Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh. The move aims to remove long-standing ambiguity in central law regarding the state’s capital status. The bill received support from both treasury and opposition benches, though the YSR Congress Party staged a walkout in protest. Once enacted, the law will give retrospective effect from June 2, 2024, solidifying Amaravati’s position with no scope for future alteration. The issue dates back to the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, when Telangana was formed. Hyderabad was designated as the joint capital for a maximum of ten years. However, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, did not explicitly name a permanent capital for Andhra Pradesh. This led to prolonged political and administrative uncertainty, with competing visions emerging over time.

6. Bhavasagara Centre Declared National Deep-Sea Fauna Repository: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has designated the “Bhavasagara” Referral Centre as a National Repository for Deep-Sea Fauna, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s marine biodiversity conservation framework. The recognition enhances the country’s capacity to systematically document and preserve deep-sea biological resources under a legal and scientific framework. The Bhavasagara Referral Centre operates under the provisions of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. Its designation as a national repository formalises its role in conserving marine biodiversity, particularly from deep-sea ecosystems. This move aligns with India’s commitment to protecting biological resources while ensuring their sustainable use and scientific study.

7. Varkala Selected in 20 Cities Zero Waste Initiative: Varkala, a coastal town in Kerala, has been included in the inaugural “20 Cities Towards Zero Waste” initiative, highlighting India’s growing commitment to sustainable urban development. The initiative recognises cities worldwide that are adopting innovative strategies to minimise waste and transition towards circular economy models. The “20 Cities Towards Zero Waste” initiative is led by the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Zero Waste, with support from UN-Habitat and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It aims to showcase cities demonstrating ambitious efforts in waste reduction, resource efficiency, and sustainable urban systems. The initiative encourages global cooperation and knowledge-sharing to accelerate the shift towards zero-waste practices.

Willie Walsh, a globally recognised aviation leader, will assume charge by early August 2026 after completing his tenure at the International Air Transport Association (IATA). North co-founded Ambrosia in 1970 alongside David Pack, Joe Puerta and Burleigh Drummond. The band became known for blending progressive rock complexity with smooth, melodic hooks. His mastery of the Hammond organ and piano added emotional depth to hits such as “How Much I Feel”, “Biggest Part of Me” and “You’re the Only Woman (You & I)”. His style helped popularise what later came to be known as the yacht rock genre.

6. India Leads Globally in Nagoya Protocol Compliance Certificates: India has emerged as the global leader in issuing Internationally Recognised Certificates of Compliance (IRCCs) under the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS). With 3,561 certificates issued out of a global total of 6,311, India accounts for over 56 per cent of all IRCCs, demonstrating its strong commitment to biodiversity governance and equitable resource sharing. According to data from the ABS Clearing-House, a global platform promoting transparency in biodiversity use, India stands far ahead of other nations. Among 142 registered countries, only 34 have issued IRCCs so far. India is followed by France, Spain, Argentina, Panama, and Kenya, highlighting a significant gap in implementation levels.
