NATIONAL UPDATES:
1. IITM Pune Installs X-Band Doppler Weather Radar at Mahabaleshwar to Boost Forecasting Under Mission Mausam: The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, inaugurated an X-band Doppler Weather Radar at Mahabaleshwar under Mission Mausam to enhance weather monitoring. Installed at about 1,400 metres in the Western Ghats, the radar can track rainfall, storms, fog, and winds in real time, improving short-term weather forecasts (up to 3 hours) for regions like Pune, Mumbai, Konkan, and Satara. IITM also signed an MoU with ISRO’s Space Applications Centre (SAC) to develop advanced satellite-based weather products, aiding disaster management, agriculture, aviation safety, and climate studies.
2. India’s Industrial Growth Slows to 4.1% in March 2026: India’s industrial output growth slowed to a 5-month low of 1% in March 2026, indicating moderation in economic activity. Industrial growth is measured by the Index of Industrial Production, which tracks factory output across sectors. As per National Statistics Office (NSO), February 2026 growth was revised to 5.1% from the earlier estimate of 5.2%.
3. HF Radar Installation to Boost Karaikal Coastal Monitoring: The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) is set to enhance coastal surveillance along Puducherry’s Karaikal region by installing a high-frequency (HF) radar system. The initiative aims to strengthen real-time ocean observation, improve weather forecasting accuracy, and support early warning systems for extreme events such as cyclones. The proposed HF radar system will be capable of measuring surface currents and waves up to 200 kilometres offshore. It will monitor parameters such as current speed, wave patterns, wind pressure, and temperature gradients. The radar can detect weather events within a radius of 80–100 kilometres, providing critical data for improved numerical weather prediction models.
4. Justice Grewal Appointed NCLT President by Centre: The Union government has approved the appointment of Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal, a former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as the President of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The decision resolves an ongoing legal dispute regarding the appointment of the tribunal’s acting president and brings clarity to its leadership structure. The Delhi High Court, while hearing a petition challenging the appointment of an acting president, declared the matter “infructuous” following the Centre’s decision. The Bench observed that with a full-time president now appointed, the dispute over interim arrangements no longer held relevance. Consequently, the court closed proceedings in the petition filed by a technical member of the tribunal.
5. Elangana Appoints Hanumantha Rao, Shivadhar Reddy Advisors: The Telangana government has appointed senior Congress leader V. Hanumantha Rao and Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy as special advisors, reinforcing its administrative and policy framework. The appointments underline the state’s focus on welfare governance and internal security through experienced leadership. V. Hanumantha Rao has been appointed as Advisor for Backward Classes Welfare and Development, with a rank equivalent to a Minister of State. A seasoned politician with over five decades of experience, he has served as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from 2004 to 2016. He also held the position of MLA in undivided Andhra Pradesh. 1. India to Host 4th India-Africa Forum Summit in New Delhi After 10-Year Gap: India will host the Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-IV) in New Delhi, marking its return after a 10-year gap, highlighting renewed engagement with Africa. The summit will be organised by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in collaboration with the African Union. The event aims to strengthen India–Africa relations, focusing on cooperation in areas like trade, investment, development, and strategic partnerships.
2. UNESCO Expands Global Geoparks Network with 12 New Sites, Total Reaches 241 Worldwide: UNESCO has added 12 new sites to its Global Geoparks Network, strengthening efforts to protect geological heritage and promote sustainable development. The newly designated geoparks are spread across countries like China, France, Greece, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Portugal, Russia, Tunisia, and Uruguay, highlighting global participation. With this expansion, the total number of UNESCO Global Geoparks has reached 241 sites in 51 countries, covering over 882,000 sq km worldwide.
3. 28 April – World Day for Safety and Health at Work: World Day for Safety and Health at Work is observed every year on 28 April to promote safe and healthy working conditions. The day is organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to raise awareness about workplace hazards and prevention of occupational accidents.
4. 29 April – International Dance Day: International Dance Day is celebrated every year on 29 April to promote the art of dance and its cultural significance worldwide. The day was established by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), a partner of UNESCO, to encourage participation and awareness of dance. It commemorates the birth anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet, highlighting the importance of dance as a universal language.
5. 29 April – International Sculpture Day: International Sculpture Day is celebrated on 29 April to promote the art of sculpture and recognize sculptors worldwide. The day is organized by the International Sculpture Center (ISC) to raise awareness about three-dimensional art and its cultural importance.

President To Lam, who also serves as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including ministers and senior officials. 1. DRDO Unveils Indigenous Advanced Armoured Platforms to Boost Defence Capabilities: DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat unveiled Advanced Armoured Platforms (Tracked and Wheeled) at a DRDO laboratory in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra. These platforms have been developed to meet the emerging operational requirements of the Indian Defence Forces, enhancing mobility, firepower, and protection. The systems feature indigenously designed advanced technologies and were manufactured by TATA Advanced Systems Limited and Bharat Forge Limited, boosting defence self-reliance.
2. Agni-VI Missile Signals India’s Strategic Defence Leap: India’s strategic defence capabilities are set to advance significantly as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has expressed full readiness to begin work on the Agni-VI missile programme. The announcement reflects growing momentum in India’s missile development ecosystem, pending formal government approval. The development marks a crucial step in strengthening long-range deterrence and modern warfare preparedness. DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat confirmed that the organisation is technically prepared to initiate the Agni-VI project. 4. IN-SLN DIVEX 2026 Strengthens Maritime Ties: India and Sri Lanka have deepened naval cooperation through IN-SLN DIVEX 2026, held in Colombo from 21 to 28 April. The fourth edition of the bilateral diving exercise focused on underwater operations, joint rescue capability and maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region. The Indian Navy deployed INS Nireekshak, a Diving Support and Submarine Rescue Vessel, for the exercise. Diving teams from both navies took part in harbour and open-sea drills to improve coordination and operational familiarity. The exercise included advanced deep-sea diving and mixed gas diving drills. Divers successfully conducted operations beyond 55 metres, strengthening joint skills in underwater search, rescue and salvage missions.

Launched in July 2025, the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite represents a major milestone in global Earth observation technology. RBI Eases Relief Norms for Disaster-Affected Borrowers: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced revised guidelines allowing banks and financial institutions to extend relief measures to borrowers in disaster-hit areas without requiring individual requests. The new framework, effective from July 1, 2026, aims to ensure timely financial support and reduce procedural delays during natural calamities. Under the updated directions, lenders can proactively offer relief to all eligible borrowers in notified disaster areas. Borrowers, however, retain the option to opt out within 135 days from the date of calamity declaration.
