NATIONAL UPDATES:
1. Siddaramaiah
took oath as Chief Minister of Karnataka:
Siddaramaiah took oath as the 24th Chief Minister of
Karnataka for the second time, following the party’s resounding victory in
the recently concluded assembly elections. Apart from him, DK Shivakumar was
sworn in as the cabinet minister and has been designated as the sole deputy
chief minister of Karnataka. Karnataka has a parliamentary system of government
with Legislative Assembly, and Legislative Council. Capital of
Karnataka: Bangalore.
2. Ministry
of Civil Aviation organizes Curtain Raiser event for Wings India: Ministry of Civil Aviation in collaboration with Federation
of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) has organized a
curtain raiser ahead of Wings India 2024 in New Delhi on 18th May 2023. The
ministry has also unveiled the event and promo video and released
the Wings India 2024 brochure. Wings India 2024 is expected to be
Asia's largest event on Civil Aviation on Commercial, General and Business
Aviation and will bring together various stakeholders.
3. Justice
Prashant Kumar Mishra and K V Viswanathan sworn in as SC judges: Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate, K V
Viswanathan was sworn in as judges of the Supreme Court, administered by
Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud. With this enhancement, the working
strength of Supreme Court has reached its sanctioned judge strength of 34. KV
Viswanathan is the tenth lawyer who has directly been appointed from the
Bar to the Supreme Court bench. Justice Mishra was serving as
the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Chief Secretary launches quiz and photo competitions “G20 in Kashmir": Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, Arun Kumar Mehta has launched
open quiz and photo competitions about “G20 in Kashmir” on the MyGov
portal in Srinagar ‘www.jk.mygov.in’. The competition is aimed at promoting G20
awareness and its understanding among the citizen and can also foster critical
thinking skills amongst students. Regarding the G20 Photo
Competition, the participants have to submit photographs capturing G20
landscapes in J&K
5. Madhya Pradesh cabinet approves ‘Mukhya Mantri Sikho
Kamao Yojana’ for unemployed youth: The Madhya
Pradesh state cabinet has given its approval to a new scheme
called ‘Mukhyamantri Sikho Kamao Yojana’ (Chief Minister Learn and Earn Scheme), aimed
at providing opportunities for unemployed youth in the state. Under the
‘Mukhyamantri Sikho Kamao Yojana,’ the government plans to offer training in
around 700 different types of work across various sectors. These sectors
include engineering, hotel management, tourism, travel, hospital services, ITI,
software development, banking, insurance, accounting, chartered accountancy,
financial services, industries, and the MSME industry. The wide range of
options allows the youth to choose fields aligned with their interests and
aptitudes. All the youth who have done 12th pass, ITI, Diploma, Graduation and
Post Graduation will be eligible for this scheme. After the training, the State
Council for Vocational Training (SCVT) certificate will be given by the Madhya
Pradesh State Skill Development and Employment Generation Board (MPSSDEGB).
6. PM Modi launches Railway Projects & Flags off
Vande Bharat Express: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid
the foundation stone and dedicate several railway projects worth over
8,000 crore rupees in Odisha via video conferencing During the event, Modi
flagged off the Vande Bharat Express between Puri and Howrah. The train will
cover 500 kms distance and pass through Khordha, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, and
Balasore districts in Odisha and Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur districts
in West Bengal. experience to the rail users, boost tourism and promote
economic development in the region. Modi also dedicated 100% electrification of
the rail network in Odisha.
7. NTPC Green ties up with HPCL Mittal Energy for green
hydrogen: State-owned power giant NTPC’s arm NTPC Green
Energy Ltd has signed an MoU with HPCL Mittal Energy Ltd to
collaborate in renewable energy and generation of green hydrogen. The two
companies will work together to source 250 MW of renewable energy power for
HPCL Mittal Energy. NTPC is India’s largest power utility firm, having a core
business of power generation with a total installed capacity of 72 GW
(including JVs and subsidiaries). HMEL is a joint venture between HPCL and
Mittal Energy Investments Pvt Ltd, which is an integrated refining and
petrochemical company in India. It is engaged in the business of superior
petroleum and petrochemical products and operates the Guru Gobind Singh
Refinery (GGSR) with 11.3 MMTPA capacity at Bathinda, Punjab.
INTERNATIONAL UPDATES:
1. Indo-Indonesia
bilateral Exercise Samudra Shakti-23 concluded in South China: The 4th edition of the Indo-Indonesia bilateral Exercise
titled ‘Samudra Shakti-23’ concluded in the South China Sea. The
sea phase of the exercise was held from 17th to 19th May
2023 witnessed the participation of ASW corvette INS Kavaratti with
integral Chetak helicopter and a Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft. Sea phase
was preceded by a harbour phase which saw professional interactions. Samudra
Shakti exercise was first held in 2018.
2. Ministry
of Education and World Bank organize School-to-Work Transition: Ministry of Education and World Bank has organized a one
of its kind workshops on School-to-Work Transition under the STARS Program in
Mumbai. This workshop was attended by the Secretaries of Education and Skill
Department of the six STARS states: Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Odisha,
Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. STARS program was
launched for strengthening of Vocational Education and the workshop focused on
discussion on a Skill Gap analysis.
3. 2025
to be observed as 'special tourism year' in Nepal: The
decade of the 2080s of Bikram Samvat will be marked as
'the Visit Nepal decade' and 2025 as the special year for tourism This
was announced by the President of Nepal Ram Chandra Paudel while presenting the
policies/ programmes As per the latest statistics maintained by Nepal Tourism
Board, Nepal recorded the arrival of over 3.26 lakh foreign tourists in the
first 4 months of 2023 President has announced that timely revisions would be
made to tourism-related law.
4. Mahatma
Gandhi Scholarships awarded to 300 students across Sri Lanka: School students from all 25 districts across Sri Lanka have received
the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Scholarships. This scholarship provides Rs 2500
Lankan per student every month to the top six students from each district,
based on merit cum means. In 2023, two batches of scholarships were awarded
simultaneously to compensate for the disruptions caused by COVID-19 during the
2021-2022 period.
5. Chile’s 5000-year-old ‘Great Grandfather’ tree
declared world’s oldest: A 5,000-year-old tree in
Chile has been officially recognized as the world’s oldest. The tree,
a Patagonian cypress, is located in the Alerce Costero National Park and
is nicknamed “Great Grandfather.” It is estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,500
years old, making it the oldest living organism on Earth. The Great Grandfather
tree is a massive specimen, measuring 28 meters tall and 4 meters (13 Feet) in
diameter. It is believed to have survived several major climate changes over
the centuries, including the Little Ice Age. The tree is also a popular tourist
destination, with thousands of visitors coming to see it each year.
6. 20 May – World Bee Day: World Bee Day is observed every
year on 20 May. Objective – To raise awareness about the importance of
bees and other pollinators for our ecosystems. Theme 2023 – Bee engaged in
pollinator-friendly agricultural production This observance was established by
the United Nations in 2017 with the purpose of emphasizing the importance of
bees in sustaining both ecosystems and food production.

1. India
win 3 gold and a bronze medal in Archery World Cup Stage 2 at Shangha: Teenage Indian archer Prathamesh Jawkar (Archery World Cup
Stage 2) defeated the world number one Mike Schloesser of the
Netherlands to win a maiden World Cup gold medal in the men's individual
compound section. In the non-Olympic compound section, India bagged 2 gold with
the mixed team duo of Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam beating top-seeded
Korean team 156-155. Mixed team duo of Sheetal & Rakesh also bagged gold.

3. Jyothi Yarraji clinches gold in women’s 100 m hurdles:
Athlete Jyothi Yarraji won a gold medal in the women’s
100 m hurdles at the Federation Cup athletics event at the Birsa Munda
Stadium in Ranchi. Yarraji, representing Andhra Pradesh, had set a meet record
(13.18 secs) in the heats of women’s 100m hurdles. She further improved the
meet record to 12.89 seconds on her way to winning gold. She also bettered the
qualification standard of 13.63 seconds set by the Athletics Federation of
India, for the Asian Championships to be held in Bangkok from July 12-16.
BANKING AND FINANCE
1. RBI withdraws Rs 2000 notes from circulation under Clean Note Policy: RBI has decided to withdraw Rs 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation under the Clean Note Policy. The policy says that 2,000-rupee notes will continue to be legal tender but will not be ciculated. RBI has said members of the public may deposit Rs 2,000 banknotes into their bank accounts or exchange them for banknotes of other denominations. Exchange of Rs 2000 banknotes of other denominations can be made up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time from 23rd May, 2023.
